0:00He's the one the only pearly cyber with the Michigan movie critic skills on Eve of his birthday happy birthday weekend All I need to my birthday is that in like a million dollars You know who else needs a million dollars the people that bought this from Warner brothers the movie we're out to talk about It is Coyote versus acme now when I was a kid I did not like cartoons But they were always on because of my brothers and I especially hated the road runner because of the violence Oh, see this is funny So I until I started watching the godfather every Saturday at about age 12 or 13 I watched ABC's cartoon lineup religiously and that was this was a good hour of that at the time It was the looney tune the bugs and looney the bugs and that bugs in roadrunner hour

1:01It was really sender various names over this time. So I Truly love the classic looney tunes Warner Brothers cartoons and then last I got older and realized oh So many cool film references That were timely when they were made in the 40s and 50s But other than that yes, I but I too I would I would go to the bathroom I'd get more cereal during the Wiley Coyote Roadrunner cartoons had nothing to do with the violence even at that age Lucian I like to dialogue I don't need cartoon slapstick I want I want snappy repartane Yeah, you even know he knew even that day that age what kind of a movie reviewer he wanted to be I like that so I think that Part of the problem for me is just I don't know it just I Really I've told you this before when there are cartoons out there that are for kids I cannot stand adult references buried in them and I know I know you like that and supposedly the kids can't figure it out But to me it's just too close to the line that they might and it just bothers me. It just isn't innocent and I

2:04Like a childhood to be innocent There's there's there's all basically nothing here that isn't innocent. I'll be fair. I mean they're not This this this is what we're talking about so many different things. I don't in you end up fine There are things that can happen in a a family film a filming tetted for a childhood audience That only adults are going to understand that children will one day understand that might deal with a really adult Things that children aren't ready to get at and that you could recognize that that's really cool when movies get away with that That is never with the roadrunner coyote was about the roadrunner coyote was surely about just sheer action energy and a Complete lack of respect for the laws of physics. That's the point of those hard to I have to admit I love the concept of this movie. So when acne products fails Wiley coyote. Yes, one too many times as Wiley constantly is using products from acme to go after the roadrunner. Yes, okay He decides to hire a guess you could call it down on his luck lawyer to sue

3:06The corporation acme, right? Is that yes? That is the premise. Yes. It is a the versus in the title is a lawsuit Because that's what every kid loves a lawsuit in their cartoons But yes, that is what's going on in this movie and I agree. It's a great price It's actually taken from an article that Ian Frazier wrote for the New Yorker that made fun of all that like it was it was a sort of a joke Peace. Oh This idea this was the that was the starting point for the for the script and this Lucy and this is a tortured film Warner Brothers was gonna shelve this they were gonna write it off as a tax loss and never release it It might like they did with catwoman. There was a catwoman film you'd never got to see you're probably lucky But this they were sort of shamed into like and this was at the time when they'd taken all of the loony Tune shorts off of HBO Max which had all of them when Max started They were sort of being shamed by everybody like why are you not giving us loony tune stuff? It's one of the most You know, one of the grand products in the history of the studio that you're trying to sell anyway. Why are you denying it's universal?

4:11Yeah, and So they they sold it off to a company named ketchup that bought it for about I think 50 million they released it It's it's Lucian look I didn't laugh. I didn't laugh once I smiled Very early on at something that was a very deep and lovely Warner Brothers loony tunes reference The the the mad scientist that starts it all is is played by I'm just gonna use the real actor same song as it's Peter Laurie And I loved it when Peter Laurie would show up the old Warner Brothers Curtis because Peter Laurie had a wonderful voice for cartoon Yes, he does you could make fun of that voice. It was wonderful Wonderful I tell you I love Peter Laurie and so that they drew that the old and they drew they drew it like they used to draw the Peter Laurie characters great Issue smile and then nothing funny not what I really like will forte who is the human lead here He's incredibly funny man. I can't believe anything. He didn't this home. He thought was funny There are jokes here. Obviously you're like that's the best joke you get to and it's still not funny

5:15It's called coyote versus acme here it is. Yes I've been horribly injured by a product made by the acme corporation. It's not your fault There's probably someone to blame The name of the case is coyote versus acme Why the coyote he is rep us We all know who's responsible and all of his injuries are self-inflicted You've been settling acme cases for years. I could probably get you 250 bucks to that This is your opportunity to really show people what you're capable of These companies think they can do whatever they want Is he We really have nothing We both know it would be very unpleasant if anything Would you become Yeah, right I Like the integration of the cartoons with the human beings

6:17It's fine. I mean, loonies would do this forever They used to do this with the old Warner Brothers films, but this is you know These were seven minute cartoons for a reason Lucian there has never been a feature length loony tunes film worth anything That wasn't just a collection of the seven minute shorts and that's every one of them is going space games terrible I understand has a huge lovable generational following it's terrible movie Uh, it was and it's only a little bit better than the one they did a couple years ago Uh, none of them have ever been any good I've seen many of them not all of them because I know they're never any good I went back again like Charlie Brown of the football and it was yanked away from me again by Warner Brothers with this thing Part of the problem Lucian is that they Know it they try to actually put emotional stakes in this movie Lucian They're trying to get me to they're trying to get find some deeper meaning There's some less sound I'm supposed to learn about just continuing to try even if it seems impossible and it never works Which is the lesson we're supposed to take from Marley Coyote and that's just crap We want to see we want to see him cut a circle out of a mountain and then the whole the whole mountain that he's standing on falls in the circle stays in the air

7:24That's all we want from Warner Brothers cartoon Especially a roadrunner and Wiley Coyote cartoon, right and those are supposed to be seven minutes long You cannot sustain that energy for an hour and 43 minutes You don't want to sustain that energy for an hour and 43 minutes. It's just exhausting and it's not fun It's some point you're like yeah, you're still doing it Yeah, you're still doing it Yeah, you're still doing it and I remember when I liked all of these characters They even try to work in some you know some modern day references to how Some of these characters are rather difficult to put on these days. There's a there's a throwaway joke about Pepele Puse Being being not a good dude There's there's that fine Okay, but pointless that jokes not for your intended audience This is this is there's a reason this is out in august luci and it's the graveyard of movies late august Don't just just don't if you really really want to see this

8:25It's going to be on HBO Max the couple weeks I guarantee it all right Let's talk about the mechanics of the sale first of all for what you know anyway of Warner Brothers being shamed into releasing this but doing so by selling it over to something called ketchup as in ketchup Never heard of this company before how much did they hit on all right? How much should they buy it for The numbers that's been floating around is about 50 million about 50 million dollars to release oh 50 million Five zero. Yes. Oh, oh 50 million they paid 50 million So it may it made 15 and a half million coming in second place this weekend But that's far cry from the 50 I thought we were talking about this Off the air you said they made 15 and I thought well this company, you know now it's green no no no no Okay, five zero five years what they spent to release it oh, they're not gonna make they're not gonna make their 50 You know these deals are well hidden. I have no idea what exactly they pay for it They pay just for the right for the act release no they're not getting their money back if they bought the film outright

9:31And if they control the streaming of it if I'm wrong it won't be on Warner Brothers or well VHP on a couple weeks. It's possible. They might work hard enough to get that back. Oh I I have no idea how quickly Warner Brothers wanted it. They wanted to write it off as a tax loss I'm sure they probably made more of the 50 million selling it than whatever they could write it off for the tax loss That said I don't know what this this this isn't for anybody This this won't please people who grew up watching the cartoons Me and I know because I'm not pleased and I would love a great loony tunes collection uh This honestly loose again. I got so I got so bored watching this I started to think about I've never wanted AI in a movie before but you know what Can we just have all of Mel blanks voice work put into AI and have them learn it so all of these characters could sound like There's supposed to instead of bothering to hire somebody new because nobody's doing me better I'm not saying they're all terrible or that you know even what's there is bad

10:31It's just that's not what bugs bunny sounds like that's never been what bugs bunny sounds like and so I think if I were Mel blanks estate. I would gladly take large chunks of money And stakes in everything that's released with his work on it in AI And that would be a great way to read to redo everything I don't think the problem is it's not that writers can't find stuff to do Those voices are central to all of this and it's missing but I miss Mel blanks It sounds like it's not just the voice for you though. It's the content. It's the writing I think the well in this case. Yes. I think you could put together a collection of really great seven-minute shorts with all of these characters again I know the talent's out there to write that that's not that's possible. Okay. That's just good It this is that on top of that then I don't know the pleasure of hearing bugs sound the way you supposed to say which now the technology appears You could do I wouldn't if I were Warner brothers invest in that make that happen

11:32Yeah, come on. Come on. You could do this. Oh boy. All right Coyote versus Acme I don't want to ask you to ruin it or anything, but maybe you will who wins that court case Not the audience No, uh, I will answer truthfully within the realm of the movie Acme wins the Acme wins the lawsuit I will record that guess it doesn't surprise for anyone because The coyote always loses look exactly exactly one of the best early jokes in the movie is the logo for Warner Brothers comes up And there's a little asterisk next to it and it swoops into the asterisk and then it cuts down underneath the logo And it says a division of acme enterprises Which is that's a good game. It's good. I understand what we're at acme controls everything in this world Acme is amazon facebook Everything all combined into one. Oh, and that's and and john cina plays their lawyer. So you got that Yeah All of this is very funny on paper. None of it is funny for an hour and 43. All right, so
