Local people, local stories.
This is the all local from 10-10 wins.
I'm Donna Vaughan, and here are today's top local stories.
Well, gun violence in Brooklyn over the night,
taking the life of a child, the victim,
only 14.
Police say it happened around midnight
on a sunset park street.
Johari Cantave was a passenger in a parked car
that was approached by three men wearing ski masks.
Then there was an argument,
and the teen wound up shot in the head.
It's not clear what sparked that argument, the NYPD,
still looking to make it a rest.
Well, city officials are now mulling over the idea
of eliminating free street parking
in an effort to close a budget gap.
So would you buy your spot?
Deputy Mayor Dean Fool had flirting with the idea.
It's not a no.
Yeah, one city official says it could generate
over a billion dollars in revenue,
but drivers like Delan not going along for that ride.
I think that's a little unfair.
Like, I mean, you're already paying and parking for spots
like on meters already, so you added more of those spots
on top of more tolls.
It's just kind of tough to even own a vehicle.
You might as well just walk or use bicycles.
Now, it's just an idea, but what if you pay,
and that's your assigned spot?
No, that's not reasonable.
There's a lot of people that owns multiple cars.
There's too many cars on the road to have a sign parking.
The city says all ideas are on the table.
Amanda Alexander, 1010 wins on 92 3 FM in Brooklyn.
You remember, I'm Donnie is in a fan of the idea saying,
quote, you don't fill a $5.4 billion budget gap
through parking meters.
Yes, that the five burrows need structural change
at a scale necessary to put the city back on firm financial
footing.
A bizarre scene at a police station in Nassau County last night,
police say a queen's man tried to set himself on fire
at the 5th precinct in Elmont.
This happened after a 25 year old woman went there
to fill out a domestic violence report
against 50 year old Paul McEwen.
But when she left, he was waiting for her outside, please say.
When she ran back in, McEwen allegedly followed her
then poured a flammable liquid all over himself
in the building vestibule, cops tackled him
before anything else could happen.
McEwen has been charged with assault
and attempted arson one officer was slightly injured
during the encounter.
Lafayard, a multi-family home in Newark,
displacing more than a dozen people
had broke out around 5 this morning on Dover Street.
Four people, including a child, have been hospitalized
with smoke inhalation.
The red cross is currently on the scene
providing relief for the displaced victims.
To make matters worse, a fire truck racing to the scene
was hit by a car causing the car to flip over.
The driver of one firefighter taken to a hospital
with minor injuries, the cause of the place, not yet known.
Well, a major gun bust on Long Island last night,
the Suffolk Police say officers
that searched a home in Lindenhurst,
discovered a false wall inside a basement closet
and behind that wall nearly two dozen dangerous weapons.
The stash included assault rifles, semi-automatic handguns,
revolvers, and several rounds of ammunition, they say.
The reason the home was searched according to police
was because of a probation issue for the man who lives there.
Todd Pennell now facing 50 felony weapons charges.
Lunar New Year being celebrated today in Sunset Park, Brooklyn,
a free event at the MADE Bush Terminal
on 1st Avenue and 43rd Street
will feature traditional lion dances, martial arts,
and other cultural performances.
Steve Mayer, Brooklyn Community Services, telling 1010 Wins
the event is all about togetherness.
For me, Lunar New Year is like a really...
I think I really would be with family, right?
With family and friends.
I think in the Asian community,
when we celebrate Lunar New Year,
it's always like followed and this tradition
where go and visit our family,
like folks that we may have not seen for some time.
We'll also be doing free health screenings at the event.
Actually, Timothy Shalame taking some heat
about recent comments he made about ballet and the opera
and a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey for variety.
The Oscar winner said, quote,
no one cares about those art forms
adding that audiences these days want action.
I don't want to be working in ballet or opera
or things where it's like,
I didn't keep this thing alive, even though...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
No one cares about this anymore.
Now Shalame is not dumb.
He quickly realized what he had said
and followed it up with, quote,
I just took shots for no reason.
The New York City Ballet fired back
with dancer Megan Fairchild,
posting an Instagram video mocking Shalame's suggestion
that he could have been a performer
in either field opera and ballet.
Timmy, I didn't realize you were a world class dancer
or opera singer who simply chose not to pursue it
because acting's more popular.
The med also posted a video highlighting
the work of performers writing, quote,
all respect to the opera and ballet people out there.
This one's for you, Timothy Shalame.
Well, Dale, it's saving time begins at 2 a.m. tomorrow.
So if you have any clocks that don't reset themselves,
don't forget to move them an hour ahead
before you turn in tonight.
Now, this is only an hour of law sleep
we're talking about, no big deal, right?
But experts weren't.
That's enough to impact sleep patterns
and put thousands of drivers at risk on the road.
AAA's Robert Sinclair Jr. has some advice.
If you're driving at a time during your,
not accustomed to being awake and you feel fatigued,
that's a sign.
You probably need to pull over some place safe.
That's very critical, especially these days.
You find someplace safe to pull over and lock the doors
and take a nap.
And in the 15 or 20 minutes is remarkable
at rejuvenating a person when they're behind the wheel.
The New York saw more than 14,000 fatigued related crashes
between the years 2021 and 25, according to state traffic data.
Over 2600 of those crashes resulted in injuries.
12 of them were fatal.
City officials say they urgently need some help
to count the homeless.
The homeless outreach population estimate
or hope count has been rescheduled for this Tuesday night
after being postponed by the blizzard.
But they've only gotten half as many volunteers as usual,
they say.
Officials with the city's Department of Homeless Services
are urging New Yorkers to sign up to help
canvass streets, parks, subway stations,
and other public spaces across the five burrows.
The survey is a must in order for cities
to get federal funding for homeless services.
