All right, coming up on today's show, everyone.
We have a great Monday, Monday episode.
We're going to bring you all the segments from last Monday.
We're going to look ahead to Indian Wells.
And we're going to look backwards
what happened on tour last week in Dubai,
Acapulco, and Austin, Texas.
Also backed by popular demand.
Sam's jingle is back.
We couldn't avoid the comments any longer.
And that's going to open our show.
So let's get this one started.
Jack Jones, Dean Sam.
I've got both a few times that we're wrong.
It's playing nothing really.
OK, guys, before we get into the main show,
we are joined by a very special guest.
Nothing major this year at Indian Wells
is going to have a fashion correspondent on site.
It's not Sam.
It's not Stevie.
It's none other than our good friend Woody White,
who is joining the podcast right now.
Really appreciate you Woody.
Why don't you take your time to introduce yourself.
Jack Lee, who you are, and what do you do?
Yeah, my name is Woody White.
I'm a creative director of Oyster Tennis,
kind of an on-court, off-court lifestyle tennis brand
here based out of LA.
And the nothing major fit check correspondent.
Yes.
All right, well, we need this.
We know that Indian Wells is a very fashionable place.
Weather's amazing.
Stevie and Sam are going to be there.
Jack and I are not.
Sam, your fashion's horrendous.
Stevie, you're middle of the road.
I'm pretty good in my mind.
I am.
Yes, you're better than Sam.
OK, thank you.
But you're still middle of the road.
You're sort of vanilla.
But anyways, so we got you on the pod.
Now Woody, to take care of that.
I'm going to ask you the first question.
What do you think?
How would you describe Indian Wells fashion
over the course of the years that you've been there?
You know, it's like, for the States,
it's the beginning of the season.
You're in the desert.
It feels like average in 95 degrees.
You know, it's the first time for people
to come out, give fresh.
You know, we're in the sport with no uniform.
So your personal style is dictated at a tournament.
So you see a little bit of everything, you know,
from like dresses to the traditional tennis looks,
to the retro tennis looks, to, you know,
people really come in with their best dressed outfits
for the tournament.
Are you more excited to, like, when it comes to the players,
see what they're wearing on the court or off the court?
Well, you know, I mean, I love watching the players
on the court, like seeing what the new kids are
for the season, seeing if they're rotating kits
from match to match.
Unfortunately, you don't really get to see the players
off court that often, because they're traveling the world.
And it seems like most of the coverage is press day
or, you know, post-match tournament.
So, you know, at press conferences,
I love to see like, are they gonna jump in like a track suit
or are they gonna wear something a little bit different?
Like, Kiros would come through with like, you know,
jerseys on or Jordan hats,
like, kind of break up the traditional form
of what you see a player in post-match in practice.
Yeah, would you like to see that kind of like more intense,
would you see that in like other sports
where they do, you know, their post-game press conference
or whatever, like, wear something different,
like their style, their fashion,
or would you rather have them kind of in there,
like a track suit in that or that regard?
Or do you want to see them throw on something
kind of that fits their style more?
Yes, I would love to see people kind of, you know,
because fashion is a space where you can like,
really express who you are.
So, I think, you know, after a match,
it's nice to see them just kind of get loose
and, you know, whether it's jewelry or hats or accessories,
you know, really kind of get into more of who they are,
because I think that's one of the things
that people don't really know,
because you only see players in their kids
and their warm-up gear.
Yeah, and for the, you know, for the players fashion on court,
what do you, like, where do you stand on, you know,
players going, or like, companies going with their retro gear?
Like, Fila throws back like the old Bjorn Borb,
or Nike goes like with the old stuff
from like the 80s or 90s, kind of that throwback look.
Do you like it when companies go with that kind of reinventing
an old style, or do you want them to just keep going new
and trying to be more innovative as the years go on?
I like a balance of both.
You know, it's like you bring the new audience up
to speed with the retro stuff.
I mean, of course, most of it is a little bit more
flashy and you feel like you're getting a little bit more
personality with the retro stuff,
but I also like to see innovation.
I will say the one thing that I love about earlier tennis
is like the fits weren't so tight.
You know, sometimes these shirts are like a little snug,
and I like the comfortable relaxed look.
Now, I don't know from like a performance level,
does it change the way you play,
but that's what you see most off the professional tour
when you're like at parks and rec places.
You mentioned curious earlier.
Can you give us a list of like three or four other players
that you always look forward to see like what they're wearing
or what they're going to be dressed in
or like what they do well in fashion?
Currently or just like currently, currently, yeah.
I like besides the four besides the four of us, of course.
I like Carlos because they give him like,
you know, sleeveless kits.
I think that always looks nice.
I like Shelton the way he shows up
and who would be the third player?
I've really got to think about that one.
I like Sabalanka, you know, I like the way she shows up.
I like the way Naomi shows up.
I mean, what she did at the Australia open,
I think was wonderful.
I mean, she really turned like her entrance
into somewhat of a runway.
And you know, that got a ton of uproar outside
of the tennis space, which is always,
I think a good way to bring new people
into the sport is like expression of style.
Yeah, 100% and we, I think the four of us,
we may be differing styles and fashion senses,
but we just had one question for you to put us on the spot.
What do you think of the four of us, our fashion?
How would you rank the four of us in general?
You're chilling.
You're chilling.
You know, like you're running the pot.
Like, you know, you got you nothing major hats on.
I love to see all the new product
like Tricklelin here and there, you know, is great.
And now I got a question for you guys.
Yep.
When you were playing, how much input did you have
on your kits?
I think that's like something people always want to know.
Below zero, below zero percent.
For most of your own.
Yeah.
I really only think it's like the Federer, Serena Williams,
Osaka, Carlos, Yannick, Coco Gough.
Like you got to be number one in the world
and winning multiple majors.
I think before you have an influence on what you're wearing.
Okay.
So they pretty much like it is,
is it that the tournament starts
and they've got a bag to stuff for you?
Like here's the kit.
I mean, basically it's like, it's,
I guess it's season, right?
We always like would wear stuff kind of like in Australia,
like through either Indian Wells Miami
and then you get your clay court gear
and then obviously Wimbledon Whites.
And then it's like, it's just very segmented
throughout the year.
So all the slams have new gear,
but you kind of know that
because we all do photo shoots either in December
or a lot here at Indian Wells,
that kind of, you see the gear for the rest of the year.
And, you know, you, so you know what you're looking forward to.
But yeah, we pretty much have no say.
They give you what we're supposed to wear
and you wear it.
Okay, okay.
Within what they give you,
there might be like two options.
You have a colored shirt, you have a polo shirt,
one's green, one's white,
and the same thing matching shorts.
Day in a night outfit, depending on the tournament.
Obviously, maybe some darker colors at night,
lighter colors during the day.
So you just have to answer,
I love the night kits.
They get way better, yeah.
Yeah, I love the night kits.
Like when I see black on the core
or a dark navy or like a purple or something like that,
because that doesn't feel as traditional.
You know, you think, like,
I think when most people think about tennis fashion,
it's like whites, you know.
Now you don't see as much white
unless it's grass season.
You see like a lot of neons and, you know,
sometimes it could be a little bit too much.
But I think the black tennis look on the core
is like one of the flies.
Agreed.
What do you agree?
Totally agree.
When I think black tennis look,
I immediately think of Roger Federer times the US open.
Oh, yeah.
He's pulled off the all black.
He's put off the black and purple serena Williams as well.
And it's instantly think night matches at the US open.
I think that's where the fashion really comes out.
100%.
For sure.
Well, Woody White, we appreciate your time, man.
Thank you for joining the pod.
And we look forward to checking in with you this week.
Oh, he's going to be a good one.
All right.
All right.
Appreciate it, man.
Thanks so much, Woody.
Thanks, Woody.
Cool.
Thanks again, fellas.
All right, everyone.

and the team at SIFT,
quick note that major match will be released on Thursday
on our YouTube channel.
Like this has been wrapped up.
We don't know, you guys, excuse me,
you guys don't know everything,
this has been wrapped up, we went through with it,
either love it or hate it, we kind of like it,
we thought it was a lot of fun.
So I appreciate you guys tuning into that.
Also the coaches, Hottie bracket,
as you may have seen on our Instagram, is live.
Sam finally got his way.
I think, you know, people like it.
I think I might say I'm a little wrong on this one.
Hi, dude, it hurts, but I feel like I'm a little wrong too.
I'm seeing the coaches chime in on Instagram on the posts.
I've had to hold the same, might be right.
Few coaches reach out to me that were a little annoyed.
They weren't in it.
A few of them reached out.
They might have me as well.
Mark Nol's really liked the picture we put up of him.
Said his own life didn't, said his own life service.
Didn't vote for him.
No, no.
I also thought there's like really brutal first rounds
at some like kind of, yeah, like, yeah.
Yeah, there's some tough rounds.
There were some easy first rounds.
I mean, Saf and had a tough first round.
I hate him.
I hate him.
I hate him.
I think the recent polls were 92% for Safitt.
Well, I voted for CB.
I voted for CB too.
I did too.
So anyways, I think he got three votes that was all from us.
But all right, let's dive in to our show in our first segment.
Let's do the winner circle.
And I know we just had a great little fashion segment as well.
And Sam, I'm not outfit tracking you,
but I feel like you've worn that Davis Cup shirt like four
weeks in a row.
You know what?
Just me?
No, no.
You're right.
I wake up in the morning and like my wife still see kids
are asleep.
I go in the closet.
I know right where the shirt is.
So I get it.
And I put it on.
And then I usually take it off and put it right back in there.
But it is like, I should be wearing something else.
Okay.
I just want to go.
Dirty.
You know, like, just, I mean, like Stevie knows, like, it's
something before this.
It's like five or five or three put around the closet and the dark
trying not to wake anyone up.
Guys are up.
Yeah.
I should be dressing a little better for this.
I should leave it out the night before, like in the office.
Just walk in and put it on.
That's a good idea.
It's also a good idea.
Let's dive in to the meat of the show here in our first segment.
Winner's Circle.
We're going to run through the winners on the ATP and the WTA side.
Let's start with Acapulco and Steve, excuse me, Sam.
Steve, I'm going to get to you a little later.
Sam, I want to start with you and in Acapulco, Coboli takes out Tiafo.
Seven, six, six, four, Sam, did this sort of come out of nowhere
for Flavio?
Obviously, we know how good he is, but his results prior to this tournament
were downright awful.
There were horrendous.
I'm going to read you right now.
Going into this, Coboli lost to, uh, Ritter Connect, who's good.
He lost the ferry, ranked 186.
He lost the, Nardi, ranked 106.
He lost the Pennington Jones, ranked 181, two and two, and he lost the cord and
Del Ray.
But he hit three bad losses to guys right outside of a hundred.
And then, sure enough, he gets to Acapulco, takes advantage of a good draw.
He beat a wildcard first round, ranked 218, then he beat someone ranked 123, then he
baked someone 142, then he beat Ketch Manavitch 84.
He was in the finals, and the highest ranked guy he beat was Ketch Manavitch at 84 in the
world.
Not to say, look, you can only beat who's in front of you.
And we know he's been top 20 before, but I'm pumped that he won it.
I'm a big Coboli guy, like I like that he's in the mix.
I wanted to play well, and he's, he was fun to watch.
I mean, I kind of got most of the match in the final against Tiafo.
He's got an unbelievable running forehand.
He's a great athlete, but I will say he did take advantage, at least up until the finals
of like a pretty favorable draw, but he needed it.
He needed the, he needed a good week because he had been playing horrible.
That just might be Coboli though in general, because last year he had an awful start to
the season as well, didn't really get going until after Miami, so maybe he's just a slow
starter.
He is.
He took out like the local, like the Mexican wild card, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, he did.
But yeah, it's kind of one of those, oh, Sam just got another latte, I think.
It's a, it's a tea this morning, a little under the weather.
Okay.
It's unbelievable.
I'm sorry.
But it's one of those scenarios, like obviously winning that tournament, a little long confidence
and kind of squeaks through like a, like a, a, a, a, he had he had a tougher first round.
He's probably out, right?
Yep.
Totally.
And then he got it.
Then he got it.
But also obviously he took out Francis in the final, great tournament for Francis.
He had, you know, didn't play that well in Dallas, served for the match in Delray Beach,
making a final here.
That's pretty big for, for big foe.
You guys like his chances, Jack, like his chances going forward to, to build off an
Occupoco final.
It's a big tournament, especially with how the points are now.
It's not just 300 points to make a final, it's like 350 or something to make it 500 final
now.
And as a fellow, like heavy, heavy sweater, that was just very impressive to watch him navigate
Occupoco.
Like short looks like he's, like went for a swim, like I, I felt like I did out there.
Yeah, he, he played, he played great.
I think, yeah, I think big confidence week form going in new wells.
Now you got the, the sunshine swing back to back masters here in the States, front of
the home fans.
We know he loves playing on the big stages, loves playing in front of big crowd, obviously
in new wells.
And Miami both going to be massive crowds in the home guy.
So yeah, I think he'll, hopefully for him, make, make some good runs here the next,
what, four weeks over these tournaments, foes trending back up after, yeah, play
the extra, yeah.
Like he lost that match to Learner T and in Del Rey.
And now Final Occupoco, like he's got the momentum is back, I would say.
All right.
Let's move on to Dubai, Jack.
I want to keep it with you.
Medvedev takes the title bit of an unfortunate, not bit of a totally unfortunate, it takes
out Greece where it doesn't take him out.
He wins in the final via walk over.
You have a little experience with that.
So I feel, I feel this over time, talent Greece for who heard himself in the semi finals
and woke up the next day and couldn't take the court.
But one of the, the great streaks in tennis is, is done with as his 23rd title.
This is his first time he's won a tournament more than once.
And that's Dubai.
But he was absolutely clinical, Jack in Dubai did not lose a set the whole way.
How do you, how do you assess how good his week was in Dubai?
Yeah.
I think he just, he just medvedeved his way through that, like just, just kind of picking
people apart, playing crazy, consistent tennis, doing his thing, obviously ball striking,
always great, serving great.
Yeah.
Interesting final.
You guys tell ask me about that one in Del Rey a few weeks ago, it's weird when he
show up, expecting to play a final guy can't play.
So unfortunately, Greece board can recover quickly.
But yeah, Danilo, it seems like he, he seems to be more confident again.
I don't know, he seems just like he, the belief is back in his game and he, he, like, it's
going out there.
He looks like he is expecting himself to win and he want, you know, he, I don't know,
he seems very, yeah, very high on, high on his play right now.
And yeah, hopefully, I guess we'll see what happens here with the travel and craziness
going on in the world and if he can get over to the states in California in play.
But yeah, it'd be tough to come off the confidence of this and these wins and not be able
to continue it into these master series.
But I guess we'll see, see how that plays out.
He was clinical there.
He wasn't even challenged.
If you look at the scores, one in three, two in three, two in one, four and two, again,
I, we're so used to feel like Dubai used to be, not that it's not strong, but the rankings
of guys he beat, 262, 99, 49, and then of course Felix is ranked eight.
But just like Caboli did take advantage of a good draw, but I feel like Mevadev is back
with those score lines too.
One, two titles this year.
Like he's not, not back as if like he's top three, but back like he's a top 10 guy.
He's back like he has that like look like that swagger and like that like, it's not cockiness
or arrogance, but like, yeah, you can just tell I feel like when he's walking around
playing now.
I feel like he's back.
But I also think Dubai is just, that term is just getting hurt by the schedule, right?
Back to back 500s, Doha the week before they had center and Al-Kharaz.
Those guys want to get to California to get ready for Indian well.
So the Dubai field was weaker than we are accustomed to seeing.
Obviously, Federer, all the greats have played Dubai in the past.
Not this year.
The field was a little bit weaker and it was a brutal Sunday as it was no match to even
play in the final.
But congrats to Danil and he breaks that streak, which is just one of the craziest streaks.
Like, people in the tennis world know about it.
That's got to be one of the craziest streaks I've ever like in sports period.
But no one actually wanted him to break the streak.
No one did.
No.
Yeah.
So anyways, Stevie, I wanted to save the Santiago 250 result for you because we all know
how much you love.
I'm like, well, the South American.
Clay Swing, you're a clay dog.
But I wanted to save it for you because your former teammate at USC made the final
Yonic Han from, he lost in the finals to Luciano Darderi, 7.6, 7.5.
Darderi has five titles.
Yeah.
18 titles.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's a clay dog.
It's a super quiet five ATP titles.
But talk about, I guess, that match in the finals, Stevie.
And also, the result for your teammate, who's a bit of a veteran.
I think he's 34 years old.
Yeah.
It's a great week down there.
I mean, yeah.
Yonic Hoffman was a freshman when I was a senior.
So I played a lot of doubles with him back in the day, such a good individual.
And he's had a lot of success kind of later in his career on tour, excuse me, had that
good run in Rome.
He's back into the top 100, about I think he'll be 65 today in the ranking.
So it's great to see that Yonic is playing well.
He's a phenomenal tennis player, great athlete, much better on clay.
I think then some of the other surfaces just with his movement and his serve.
But I mean, Darderi is, I mean, if you guys haven't watched him play, like this guy hits
the ball so hard.
And the best thing about him when you watch him play is, I feel like he's got a little
bit of Fabio in him, the way he slowly walks in between points, kind of jaws with the
crowd a little bit, talks to his coaching box, like, so it just kind of reminds me of Fabio,
which is kind of like a soft spot in my heart, because who doesn't love to watch Fabio
out in the court when he's playing tennis, but super, super good week.
I mean, selfishly, I wanted Yonic to win.
He's had a couple other finals on clay in his career in Kitsbule and Gostod.
So it was hoping he would get that job done in the final, but the South American golden
swing, you know, it's the same three tournaments, all the same guys in those events.
I think it's always well attended.
And it's something that, you know, two of us did one time, but it was never on our radar.
But the event's looking credible outside of that is just never on our radar.
So, but congrats to Dardary.
He is a clay dog.
He's a clay specialist and another 250 title.
That's five 250s for Dardary.
The most random titles too.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think all of us enjoyed playing 250s, one, a bunch of those, but yeah, I don't think
those five titles are going to be getting Dardary into the tennis hall of fame unless he starts
winning some grand slams.
But, you know, the big titles of Marrakesh and so many, how many 250 titles would you
need?
How many 250 titles do you need to make?
There is no.
There is no.
No.
No, no.
No, no.
If there was a number, if there was a number, if there was a number, it's a hundred, no
number.
No number.
Yeah.
No number.
All right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There is no number.
You got to get the number one and you got to win a slam.
All right.
Moving on to Santiago.
I know everyone wanted to hear about the Santiago, but we're going to stop it there.
We're going to move on.
We're going to wrap up the winner's circle with the WTA ATX open in Austin, Texas, which
I thought was a home run, especially from the crowd standpoint.
They did it.
It looks like they did a really, really good job there.
The tournament organizers and they had a great final.
Peyton Sterns, American, of course, takes out another American, Taylor Townsend, very
competitive of Matt 7, 6, 7, 5, Sam, just talk about the, I guess, the final a little bit
and also that tournament and like Austin's a really good place for professional tennis.
It's great.
I'm Rodic kind of put it on the map for pro tennis, like 20 years ago and this has played
a, is it West Side Racket Club?
Yeah.
I think that's what it is, yeah.
It's an awesome club there.
The center court build out is great.
And Peyton Sterns, she went to UT.
So like that's what made it awesome as well.
She got her first title in her home, see, I don't know if she still lives there, but she
went to UT, so many fans there.
Also fun that she played Taylor Townsend in the final, another American, Taylor's fantastic
player as well, especially on the doubles court.
But big crowd, we saw, you guys see Matthew McConaughey, tweeted out, Peyton Sterns.
He was there.
I love, he was there.
Yeah.
And he's like all in on Peyton Sterns and Tommy Paul.
Yeah.
Like those are his, those are his people.
I mean, obviously Peyton, because she went there, but super cool for Peyton Sterns.
I mean, great, great week for her.
First title in front of the home crowd is awesome.
It's awesome.
You knew she was going into this week, like, dialed in, right?
Like she wanted to win this tournament, haven't spent many years playing there at, at, at
the University of Texas.
Um, Ibi Yovic, who we love on the pod.
She lost in the round of 16.
She was the number two.
She Pagula was entered in the tournament.
She won it the year prior, but she pulled out after her great, um, due by result.
But still, all in all, great tournament.
I think that, that event has a lot of room to run.
I'm excited to see how, how that one grows, uh, going forward.
But that's it for a winter circle.
Let's do major news.
And I think you guys know, maybe the tennis world does know what the big, big major news
is right now.
And there are, this is crazy among more than 40 ATP players.
That's what we have in the, in the, in the news here, officials and staff, ATP,
officials and staff, excuse me, not all players.
My bad, um, ATP players, officials and staff stuck in Dubai, falling to, um, the conflict
in the Middle East right now as flights out of the UAE are cancelled.
Among those players, the top of the list are Mevadev and Rubelev, who are not
being able to make their way to California.
Guys, this is something that, I mean, we haven't, there's not much precedent for this at all.
And there's a very, very real chance that Mevadev and Rubelev are not going to play
Indian Wells.
I mean, Jack, how do you, how do you assess this right now?
Something we have never seen anything like this.
Yeah, I mean, I guess hard to assess because we don't really know, yeah, we don't really know
what to think of it or, or how to even react to it.
Obviously, we just hope that first and foremost, everyone is safe and, um, stay safe while,
while waiting this out.
And I guess we figure out what the options are.
I mean, I know they, they, what it said, according to the, to one of the news or publications that
you can go, you can drive six or 10 hours, but then an airport's closed there and maybe open
10 hours away.
Yeah, I don't really know what, what their options are, but, uh,
those sound like awful options.
Yeah, that's terrible.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Like, yeah, they need my guy that I use to sneak out of Russia.
Well, I didn't say like, could they, could they, if they wanted to like split a plane technically,
I guess, could you do that?
I think the issue is there like the airspace, the airspace, you know, if you can even do that,
because that would be the only, they have to fly over, I think, uh, Iran.
Well, no, you can fly a different way.
Can you just fly off the other way?
And it's like, it's a, but the airspace is still closed.
Yeah, it's a, it's a bad situation for those guys.
Like, I don't see them playing Indian Wells and is the tour, the tour does it hit them with
a zero pointer, right?
No, no, no, they've already come out and said like, oh, players in this situation are,
you know, exam from any fines.
Like, if you're, you know, if you're a Greek sport, right, and you are going to pull out,
like, you don't have to go to pull out, like, they've got to have some leniency for this.
So, I mean, this is unprecedented territory to a certain degree.
So they've got to make, they've got to start bending some rules for the players.
So if you're a Greek sport who he, he already said he wasn't playing the tournament.
Yeah, he ought to be like, oh, my hamstring's fine.
I just can't totally get a zero pointer.
Yep. Yeah.
But what are they going to do for the, for the points?
Actually, they're just, I don't know.
Yeah, nothing we can't, like, there's nothing you can do.
Yeah, you're just so well and it's unfortunate.
Yeah, yeah.
That's bad news.
Yeah, it's Jack mentioned that the, the options that, the Spanish publication is,
they're saying that worse option.
So just awful.
A six hour drive to Oman or a 10 hour drive to Riyadh.
Yeah, I mean, that makes me think of like those movies like in the Humvees through the desert.
Yeah, 100% dude.
Yeah, so you're going to get stopped at the checkpoints on the road, right?
And it's, I'm saying in Dubai.
Yeah, I'm saying in Dubai.
It's with great hotels there.
I'm assuming, um, yeah, this is, um, this is tough.
This is unprecedented.
We haven't seen anything like, like this.
But obviously, Jack said, first and foremost, we just hope everyone is safe, um,
and secure.
I mean, tennis is, is not such a big deal when you're dealing with an issue like this over there.
So we hope everyone's safe.
And, um, of course, we hope all these players and ATP staff can get the Indian wells,
but it's looking unlikely, um, unfortunately.
Yeah, they've got about what four days,
met for the seated players four days.
For non-seed, you've got to go tomorrow.
You have four to eight hours till you start.
Yeah.
Sam, I think you should DM Evadev and give him your guy's number.
I know.
This guy, this guy would make, try to make moves.
I'm telling you, you make it work, right?
I think he would.
Yeah, oh, it's so good.
Um, all right.
Well, that, yeah, that's it.
That's it.
I mean, that's all we got for, for major news as I would say that, uh,
qualifies as very, very major, um, the tennis world would, would love to see, um,
these players and Indian wells.
Uh, but let's move on to, um,
our next segment, major opinions.
Um, and we are going to start.
We've been doing this start with, um,
Stevie stats.
You're going to open up major opinions.
Stevie, are we spoke about a little bit?
Yeah, we talked about it.
This is like my faith.
This, I was hoping this stat would never end.
I, I really did.
I was hoping Medvedev would never win,
but the streak ends at 22 for Mr. Medvedev.
22 titles, 22 different cities.
It's gone.
It's dusted.
I guess we can never talk about it again because he has repeated in Dubai.
Unless we think we count Greek sport, he would have played would have won.
Then we could just count, you know, take that off the scoreboard from Medvedev,
but it's unfortunate.
He's won a, he's won a title in a city twice.
So that's, that's that is dead.
I can no longer bring it up sadly,
but that's it.
That's all I got for you, boys.
That's a good one.
I mean, there, there was no other stat for, for this past week.
So there's a Stevie stats.
I'm going to go next to the serve bar of the week.
We just spoke about Medvedev.
The guy is still stuck in Dubai,
but I'm going to give it to him for his quarter final win over American
Jensen Brooksby.
Med served 83% on his first serve there.
That is really good.
Zero double faults.
I call that a shut out on serve.
In a 6261 master class from Medvedev over Brooksby.
We talked about how he dominated
everyone and he did.
He had seven aces.
Not a crazy amount of aces,
but it didn't face any break points.
And just dominated Brooksby.
Like he dominated everyone that whole tournament.
So serve bar of the week for me.
Goes to Daniel Medvedev.
Jack, all right, you're up with your flowers.
Yeah.
For my flowers of the week,
we're going to go to Flavio Kuboli.
As Sam mentioned, might have taken advantage of a nice,
nice draw, a favorable draw.
But ends up winning the tournament 500 title.
First title on a hard court, I believe.
And also takes him to a career high ranking of 15 in the world.
There was some other great performances this week,
but going to go with the big 500 title
and a career high ranking for Mr. Kuboli.
Yeah, that's good.
Can I give, I'm going to give real quick, Sam.
We're going to go to the queries query.
But I want to give honorable mention flowers to our main man,
Marcelo, aka Ricardo Melo.
Yeah.
He went back to back 500 titles on the double score.
In Rio and Acapulco at 42 years old.
Who's in a row in Acapulco?
We deserve shout out.
Well, it was a Marcelo Melo.
Congratulations, a title in your home country.
Obviously, in Rio and then another 500 title in Acapulco,
he took that title with his good buddy,
Alexander Zverov, who lost in the second round of singles.
But does it might just quick flowers for him?
All right, Sam, you're query.
I got two queries.
First one is, do you think Federer pays attention
like how in the ATP app is checking results regularly?
Yes.
No, I don't think I'd hate to do nose results.
Like do you think, you know, yesterday morning,
he wakes up in the morning and he's like,
America, like, check it out.
Like, Kuboli took out Francis in Acapulco.
I think he does.
Yeah.
I think you don't think so, Zverov.
I don't know about that.
Maybe he wears on cloud.
Yeah, I'm mostly asking.
Of course, the slams and some master's feet.
I'm talking like the Acapulco's the Del Rey's.
You think he knows who won in Santiago?
I feel like he just hears about it,
probably like in his daily like walking around,
which probably just people talking about around him.
Like, well, would you see the,
I don't know if he's actively like,
yeah, that's the, that's the big one, CB.
Does Fed know who won Santiago?
Yeah.
If we face time to right now,
no way.
He does.
I don't think so.
I don't think so.
All right.
My other question is how many,
how many rounds of golf you think Al Krasel play
before his first round match in Indian Wells?
What's the overrun?
Great question.
Depends how many days he's there.
Let's assume he got there nine days early.
I'm going to say,
like, overrun, over to five and a half rounds.
I'm going to say,
27, so.
If he's there nine days,
I'm going to say over five and a half.
I say place six.
I think he's got to do some Nike stuff.
I think he's got some stuff.
He's got to do a few of the days.
But I think six is a fair number.
I'm going to try to,
like, I'm working for tennis channel.
If he comes to the desk, I'm going to ask him
how many rounds of golf I'm going to try.
I think I can get to the bottom of this.
Get to the bottom of this one for us.
I'm going to do that reporting.
And more importantly, like,
he doesn't play for a while.
It's a good, it's a good event to maybe try to sneak
into a, to a dinner.
LG's steakhouse.
Something like that.
Or maybe a barbecue at his place.
Oh my god.
I'm going to be unbelievable.
Yeah.
Like me in the Spanish Armada.
All right.
Good, good queries.
Samuel.
Next segment are a transition game.
And we are transitioning, of course,
into the big tournament.
That is upon us.
Indien Wells.
All the big players are a part of this on the men's side
and the women's side on the men's side.
Of course, world number one is led by Carl Salkraz at world number one.
Number two, you're on the center.
No back joke of it.
We'll be there.
Okay.
Yeah.
Oh, I'm on feast.
Got a wild card.
It's going to get another send off.
He got a send off in Acapulco.
This is getting out of control in my opinion.
Anyways, let's talk Indien Wells, guys.
Stevie, what are you, what are you most looking forward to this week?
I think it's just going to, from on the men's side,
just can the domination continue from Alcarazg?
Will he just, will he lose a set?
Will he lose a match?
Is center kind of back to where he was at the,
I mean, back to where he was at the end of last year,
like, competing at the end of these tournaments?
So I mean, I think we're going to see an Alcarazg center final.
I just think these guys on hard courts are just very good.
I mean, center has been there for a few days now.
Already practicing, getting ready.
So he, you know, these guys want to win here.
It's a big first master series of end of the year.
I don't see anybody outside of those two guys winning it,
but it's just hard to pick against them at the moment.
I don't see Draper kind of coming from nowhere to get another title.
No, Sam, let's talk about the surface at any wells.
Obviously, people that are in the know,
with tennis know that it's pretty gritty there.
This surface in particular, I mean, obviously,
we know Alcarazg is great on all surfaces,
but what, like, this type of surface,
or what type of players does this favor in your opinion?
Every surface favors Alcarazg in center.
Like, doesn't add anymore.
But yeah, you're right.
But does Alcaraz, Alcarazg is this surface
especially good for him at any?
Yes, I think so.
It's, it's, it's, it's gritty.
It's high bouncing.
I think centers a little better when the ball's like right in his zone.
I think for Alcarazg, he, like, works the kick serve
around a little bit more.
It's also, like, people in the know in Indian wells too.
When you play at night match,
they're compared to a day match.
It's one of the biggest contrasts during the year.
It's like 25 degrees colder and that cold dry, like, desert air.
So you got to get your racket strung at a different tension.
But Alcarazg obviously loves playing there.
And I, I think the court surface favors him.
But like I said, I don't court surface.
I don't think it matters anymore, especially with Alcarazg in center.
Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head.
Any wells, it's like, in my mind, it's a bit like the British open and golf.
You can have, like, perfect weather days.
And you can be, like, on a good schedule playing your matches.
Didn't get to have one of those crazy windy days
where you just have to, like, gut out and ugly win out there.
You never know what you're going to get out in the desert.
The win can just wreak havoc on players and can get super cold for the next.
Does look, does look perfect.
But it gets, it gets cold at night though.
Yeah, as soon as that sun goes down, the lows Thursday night, Friday night, 57, 54.
Pretty chilly. It's, it slows things down for sure.
On the women's side, the big four of the WTA.
We're talking Savilinkus, Fiontech,
Rebachina and Coco Gaw for all in the house.
All the top Americans are there.
Everyone's playing.
Obviously, this is a mandatory event.
Jack, I guess, on the women's side,
let's, let's, let's, you talk with our Americans.
Who do you like for our American girls going in?
Who do in your mind thinks is looking the best so far?
Who would you like to go really far on the American side?
I mean, I like Jess.
At this point, obviously, she's playing, she's playing ball right now.
As we just talked about the court, I think, being slower, grittier.
Maybe some of those heavy, heavy hitting girls can't, you know,
they blow, blow other players off the court as easily with those courts as we know,
especially like you said, the conditions at night as well.
Ball is not going to be traveling as quickly.
So I like Jess in that.
Obviously, Nissimova won the higher ranked Americans.
Hopefully, she can make a good run.
Hopefully, Emma, after, you know, after, I think, maybe some rough losses,
she can, she can kind of bounce back and have a good run as well, being an American.
But yeah, I think any one of that mixed, Jess, Amanda, always be fun.
Watch Venus compete again.
She gives a wild card to see how she does.
Hopefully, get a decent draw, give herself a chance at a win.
But there's no rumblings for, like, serene in the double draw.
That's right.
Yeah, I kind of died out.
I feel like that did.
Yeah, she's spotting her time.
Obviously, her bow is about to do a good segue for, you know, as I mentioned, Venus.
Got a wild card, 45 years old, playing in the main draw.
Pretty incredible.
Still see her out there doing it.
But any, well, it's just like big picture.
Like for all you guys, like Stevie, Sam, you two, especially being from California.
Like, this is the one tournament, y'all.
I mean, apart from the Grand Slam, would you say this is the one tournament?
Like, you really, really, we're looking forward to each and every year.
Yeah, this was, this was, this was it.
This was a, this was always on the calendar.
Big circle, like, get there early.
Hopefully, hopefully, get ready and just hopefully be there for as long as possible.
Cause it's, I mean, for me, it's my favorite, favorite place to play tennis.
It's also such, such a unique event.
I think for the fans, because you can go there, like all the players have their own
rental cars, right?
You can go to a Ralph's Supermarket and you're going to get like,
jug of milk and you'll see Medvedev in Alcras, just kind of like,
just shopping in a Ralph's.
It's just very unique like that.
You don't see that in any other tournaments, because most of the players,
not most of the players, most of the top players are renting homes there.
So they're not staying at a hotel and they're taking their time to go get their gear
to do cookouts and whatnot.
It's just such a relaxed event.
It's like, I, I really miss Indy and Wells.
It's like the one extended, it's the one extended event over the years.
Players never matter that they were there for 12 days.
Like Rome, Madrid,
since the Toronto now, they're the extended 12 day events.
Everyone's like, oh, this kind of sucks.
Indy and Wells is not that.
Everyone's totally fine with that one being a long one.
Those sadduing Indy Wells was over.
Yeah, never wanted to turn it to end.
All right, moving on.
Part two of our of this transition game segment is locked in, where we've been giving
some of our picks that we like, you know,
who we think we're going to do well in the week.
Let's go back to last week.
We just get one.
Can't repeat the same guy or girl.
I said, Serundilo, I thought he would win the title in Santiago.
Decent pick, lost in the semi-finals.
Sam, you thought Rubele would get it done in Dubai.
He lost in the semi-finals.
Good pick.
Stevie, you thought,
Bublec might get it done in Dubai.
He didn't.
He lost to Greece for clearly was playing well.
Jack went like straight chalk and took the defending champion in Acapulco.
Alex, this is like 16 over one in March,
bad, this is felt like.
Yeah, and he lost to a bit of an unheralded American Patrick Kipson
who qualified in the first round.
Jack, by far the worst pick.
What do you have to say for yourself in that one?
Yeah, wow.
As somebody who's clearly one of the best at picking in our bracket challenges,
this was a bad loss for me.
I do like Patrick Kipson a lot.
I actually know him pretty well.
Great guy.
One of the hardest workers you'll ever see has some
fortune injuries over his career.
Don't need to get too much into it.
But I think as shocked as anybody else,
there him to beat one of the most steady players that we've seen in a long time.
Yeah, I bit it a bit of shame,
but also like kind of happy for Kipson at the same time.
Like, great win.
Totally.
Yeah, good for you to do that.
You didn't want your locked-in pick to like do well just for the pod.
No, exactly.
No, like yeah, I'm very happy with Kipson, like I said.
He's dealt with a lot of injuries and rough stuff in his career.
So yeah, this is awesome to see.
He's still going.
I was pissed at Rubelev.
After I picked Sarublo to win Buenos Aires and he won it,
and then courted to win Del Rey.
And then I saw Rubelev in the semis of Dubai against Greek's poor.
I started thinking about like a back-to-back-to-back.
A church injury.
And then he lost a degree.
I thought about just sending him like nasty DMs.
You know, like the injury better.
Shine away from it.
But I thought there for a second, I was like,
this is, I'm going to go three weeks in a row.
You've been on fire lately, Sam.
Yeah, yeah.
You, I mean, you two, like decent DMs.
I mean, Tommy Paul is a good pick.
And then Sarublo's semi.
Sarublo's semi in a 250 is not that impressive.
Well, let's try to do our part here for any well.
Jack, we're going to give you first pick.
All right.
I'm going to go with the, he's going to be the most laid-back,
happiest player in the draw because he gets the golf every day.
I'm going to go with Mr. Alkarez.
I know I'm going out of limb.
I need to rebound after the demon R pick.
So yeah, I'm going to take Alkarez.
This is going to come as a shock.
I'm going to go with Jasmine Paulini to win.
Oh my goodness.
All right.
Sam, you're going to, one of these days,
one of these days, you're going to look like a genius.
It's going to hit at some point these days.
All right, give me, give me Francis Tiafo
to make a little run of Indian Wells.
No, you don't like that, John?
No, no, I was thinking like to win, but to go deep.
Not to win, I'm just like to go deep.
Someone, yeah, like to make a quarterfinal.
Like a quarterfinal.
I like it.
And on the woman's side, I'll take Coco.
Gritty courts, it's like, it's almost like can be a clay court at times.
You know, high bouncing.
She likes that you can hit the high looping forehand.
So give me Coco on the woman's side.
Little windy for that ball toss at times.
Yeah, I'm going to take Felix, Oje Alicim.
I think he's going to make the semis.
And then on the women's side, I'll take,
I'll take Ega.
I think she's had a little time off.
She's going to come out.
These slower courts in Ewells and gets the job done.
So Felix for a semi and Ega for a win.
I'm going with the goat.
Give me Novak.
Take the title away.
He's there. He's in California.
He's been practicing in L.A.
Right guys?
Yeah, he's in the L.A.
He was with us all on last night.
Look at us at the Lakers game.
Not a worry in the world, right?
He's not worried about this a bit.
It's give me Novak.
Two out of three.
It can be done.
A lot of days off in this tournament,
as you mentioned, it's a 12 day event.
It's not going to be physically taxing for him.
And then give me Jess.
I don't think the service is like so great for her.
I think she prefers maybe a little lower bouncing.
Faster surfaces.
But she got a lot of confidence.
So I like Jess, Jess, but go over there.
But we will be breaking down this tournament
in more detail for sure as it gets under way.
Everyone's looking forward to it.
Sam's going to be calling on tennis channel.
Steve, you're going to be out there as well.
And we got a fashion correspondent.
Of course, Woody White on the grounds as well.
We give you a lot of Indian Wells content.
So stick with us the next 12, 14 days.
Let's wrap up the show with the MGM Slam
that we had been promoting the last couple of weeks.
Thought it was an awesome event.
Sam, I want you to take the lead because you were calling it.
Last night, how do you think the event was overall?
And tell everyone what happened?
It was really cool.
Is that the team of LaRena and Vegas?
It was on the CW.
Yeah.
The beauty of the event is there's eight guys in the event.
Even if Al Kras was in the event,
no one was such was a was a heavy favorite.
With when you play one tiebreaker,
it's so hard to handicap who you think is going to win.
You have zero time to put a strategy together.
It's basically who makes more first serves,
who maybe gets a lead court,
who can come up with a passing shot.
And it was great drama.
In the end, Fonseca took out Riley O'Pelka
in the finals was the only one that was two out of three.
And Fonseca got it done.
He, it was a million dollar prize pool.
He got 300 grand for winning it.
But it was awesome.
My pick of Tommy Paul was awful.
For three points.
10-3.
Everyone got 75 grand to show up.
So Tommy got 25 grand per point that he won in Vegas.
Everyone got, we talked about this on air.
75 grand to show up.
If you made the semis, you got 100 grand.
If you made the final, you got 200 grand
and then the winner got 300 grand.
But it was fun.
It was a three hour show as, I know I was calling it,
but as a fan too, I was engaged.
And it was really fun to watch.
And O'Pelka had some great drop shots.
It was long rallies.
I mean, he's kind of like that obvious,
like, oh, he's got the best serve.
Of course, he's going to win it,
but he was winning the baseline rallies.
And I was like, none of us had Fonseca winning it.
How much time was it in between matches?
Time in between matches was like five minutes.
How long is two out of three, 10 point breakers in the final take?
I feel like it's a decent little.
That's like a decent.
It was probably like 35 minutes.
But you know, like Fritz beat Tommy Paul,
10, three and like six minutes.
Yeah.
Yeah, exactly.
Well, congrats to Fonseca.
It's not going to get any HTTP ranking points out of this,
which he hasn't accrued many, but he needed a little spark.
He won the doubles in Rio and now won this.
It's not singles tournament wins,
necessarily, but it's something.
It's something.
Exactly right.
But yeah, congrats to MGM for putting on a great event.
And also, thank you for letting us be a part of it.
We had a lot of fun.
And that was awesome.
I think the format was really, really cool.
Well done.
The crowd was awesome on top of that.
Yep.
Well, that includes the MGM slam
and that concludes this episode on Monday.
Thank you guys for, that was a jam packed episode.
We've got a lot of time.
A lot going on.
It's almost like an hour.
I know.
It's crazy.
But remember to like, subscribe,
hit the notification bell and YouTube
to keep the suits at SIFT happy.
And we will see you on Friday
with more Indian Wells content.
See you later.
For a friend who played on tour,
hung it up and wanted something more.
Nothing major, nothing major.
Yeah, John's D in San.
And close of your time,
everyone is playing,
nothing major, nothing major.
Tyler Reddick here from 2311 Racing.
