This is the second time that the All Star game has been played here with sportsmen's park. You'll remember that back in 1940, the Cardinals were the host club. This year, the St. Louis Browns of the American League are the host club. And our hats are off to Mr. Markhamon and Duwitt because they have everything in tip-top shape for this afternoon's ballgame. They've even managed to get him a good word with the weatherman because this morning it was raining here in St. Louis and the weatherman forecast cloudy weather with showers. But we're happy to say that right at the moment the sun is shining very brightly. However there is a few cloud dimmestigh but we have high hopes that we'll have an ideal afternoon for this ballgame.

6:13There's two clubs have been out on the field for some time. The American League club was out first and gone through their batting practice and at the moment the national leagueers are taking there. And the club, we might say, has sent quite a few souvenir baseballs into the stands and it looks like it is going to be a capacity crowd here this afternoon. The tickets for this All Star Game have been sold out for weeks. The only thing that you've been able to buy for the last three or four days have been standing room tickets only. So if everything turns out okay it's going to be a packed house and even a larger crowd then it's ended the All Star Game here back in 1940. You'll remember in that particular game that that's one of the few times that the national league has won in the All Star contest and that was the first shutout that happened in All Star Play. In the very second inning, Max Webb hit a home run with two men on and then they went ahead to score another run along in the eighth inning and it was four to nothing in favor

7:17of the national league. In all this game originally was started through the efforts of Mr. George Ward. They ported that through the Chicago Tribune up in Chicago, the same man who originated the ideas of the All Star football games and it's been carried on ever since with the exception of 1945 when the game was out due to the fact of wartime travel. And since they're originally started, the American League has won 10 of these victories with a national league only winning four times. It's been two of the All Star games that have been played at night. One was a Twilight contest. All of the others have been afternoon games. And if you reminisce and look around, you'll see that only three players are actually active as players today from the groups that originally participated in the All Star Game, away back in 1933 at the committee park in Chicago.

8:18And that happens to be Joe Medley, Archie Vaughan and Sue Boy Rowles. Forts are quite a few others around that are coaches at the present time, but we mean fellows that are actually still playing baseball. We'll sort of skimp over some of the scores of the game since the All Star League started to sort bring you up to date. You'll remember that back in 1933, the American League team won by a score of four to two. Then the following year, the game was moved to the Polo Grounds in New York, in which the American League is again won by a score of nine to seven. And that's the particular series that left the girls, or rather left the Hubble, Carl Hubble, gave his great exhibition of pitching when he struck out five of the greatest hitters in the game in a row. In fact, I believe he had six strikeouts in the two inning. And when he walked off in the mound at the Polo Grounds, the stands really rocked in the old basins that he received. Then there was the game of 1935 at the municipal stadium in Cleveland in the American League

9:23again won by a score of four to one. In 1936, at Ray's Field in Boston, that was the first win for the National League. The score in that particular game was four to three in favor of the National League. The next year, in 1937, the game was played at Griffith Stadium in Washington, and the American League is won by a score of eight to three. And you'll remember in that particular game, that is the game where Dizzy Dean, while pitching for the National League, was hit on the toe by a line drive off the bat of Earl Avril. And we might say that that was really the start of the downfall of Dizzy Dean's pitching career because he came back and tried to pitch before the toe was in shape and naturally he threw the ball while off balance, and it eventually hurt his arm and he never did get over. The game of 1938 was played in Crossley Field, Cincinnati, and that was the second win

10:23for the National League. They came out on top of that particular contest by a score of four to one. In 1939, the Yankee Stadium in New York, and the American League is won out by a score of three to one. The game of 1940, as we mentioned earlier, was played right here with Sportsman Farts, and the National League won their third contest by a score of four to nothing. In 1941, the game was played as Frick Stadium and Detroit, and that was another contest that had a dramatic finish. One Ted Williams hit one right at the tail end of the game to break up the contest. And then in 1942, at the Folow Browns, the American League won three to one. A night game at Philadelphia in 1943, the American League is won five to three. A night game in 1944, Fortressiel Pittsburgh, and National League won their last contest seven to one. No game in 1945, in 1946, at Fenway Park Boston, the American League won by a score of 12 to nothing.

11:24And then in 1947, it's wriggly sealed the American League won by a score of two to one. There's 28 American Junior Legion baseball players, who are graduates of Junior Legion baseball participating in this all-star classic here today. I believe there's about 17 on the American League, and 10 on the National League, if we remember correctly, on the dole. The ground keepers are out now, manicuring the infield, getting the diamond in shape for the fast-moons game, and the two expected pitchers are starting to warm up. We'll run over the lineup, hurriedly, for you. And then Jim Brett, who will do the play-by-play on the first form one half-ending to fast-moons, will check them with you a little later on. For the National League, Richie Ashburn of Philadelphia in center field. Red Chained D, to the St. Louis Cardinal, second base. Dan Museo, the Ele of the Cardinals, and Les Feele. 12:25Walter Cooper of the New York Giants, Kent. He re-reached to the Brooklyn Dodgers at Charts, and Ralph Branca of the Brooklyn Dodgers will be the starting fetchers. And the American League's Pat Mullin of the Detroit Tigers, right field. Honey Hendrick of the New York Yankees left field. Lou Pedro of the Cleveland Indians at Charts, Joe Gordon of the Indians at second base. Walter Guteevers of the Detroit Tigers center field. Ten Shelton of the Indians, third base. George McQuinn of the New York Yankees at first base. Buddy Rose Zarr of the Philadelphia Athletics will be the catcher. And Walter Masterson of the Washington Senators will be the catcher. Masterson is one-six ball games and lost six. Ralph Branca has one-10 and lost six. The umpires, Chaudy Barry of the American League will be working behind the plate. During the all-star game this has been on all occasions with exception to the first game which started in 1935 at Comissi Park when John Madrall managed the national league and Connie Mack was in charge of the American League. Well the pitchers are warming up at the present time.

14:26The ground keepers are still getting the unfeeling shapes and after these showers that we have this morning the diamond really looks like it's in tip-top condition for real ball game. So been informed by Commissioner Chandler that if this game happens to be tied at the end of nine innings and gets him to a long zone out struggle that if it gets dark the lights will be turned on and they'll continue right on. And now the umpires are coming out on the field. There'll be a little powwow discussion at home plate pertaining to the ground rule and then they'll be ready to go. Here at Sportsman Park right down the right field line. It is exactly three hundred and ten feet from home place to the right field line. There's a screen in front of the right field pavilion that extends out into right center and after that distance the pavilion is open. They happen to hit a line drive into there at the home run but any ball up against the screen in right field you make what you can get.

15:29But in order to get a home run in right field it has to go on top of the right field pavilion. Center field to the right of the flag pole the distance is 422 feet and just to the left of the flag pole it's 425 and a little further over to the left 426 that's the deepest point in the field. The possibility of a pinch hitter from Masterson suggests itself should Rosa get a board. Stovston is still warming up and so is Johnny Sain for the National Eagers. There's a throw to first, but Kelton are danced back. My's made no take. The score is National League 2, American League 1. Branca delivers and there goes a fly ball toward right field.

And the applause is as you might suspect for Stanley Museo, the Genora of Pennsylvania. One of the most popular baseball players ever to come down the Major League bike. His season's batting average of 403 is the only Major League market the moment above 400. Masterson lost control of the ball. He held it, slipped off the rubber I believe. Didn't seem to have injured himself and never did deliver the pitch. If you were looking for a perfect ball that would have been it had there been runners on. Now he throws. Outside. Ball one. That was an oddity but as far as the play of the game is concerned it meant nothing except that the crowd seemed to be delighted by it. Here it comes. There goes a drive to center field.

1:14:38It's sinking fast. The bat is broken and it's in there for a base hit. That's that broke completely in half. He held a handle going down the first baseman line and the rest of the bat flew out into the end field halfway between first baseman and the pitchers mound for Museo's second hit and the fourth National League hit of the ball game. A single to center for Stan. He's on first and big Johnny Mays comes up. Mays single to center at last time. Here's the pitch. Strike called fastball. Mays single through the middle at first time. That was Museo's fourth hit and 13 trips to the plate in an all-star capacity. But this is the first game in which he has really started off impressively. Masters and pitches. There's a ground ball. That one goes over to Joe Gordon. Gordon to Boudreau. Boudreau fumbles the ball. And he is out at second base. He picked the ball up just in time to get Stanley Museo the other second.

1:15:41But of course the double play opportunity went by the board and very nearly both runners were safe. It was a high bouncing ground ball. Very slow one to the right of second base. And in the interest of the double play, Gordon decided to flip the ball over to Boudreau. Had a force play been required. He obviously would have made the play himself. So the fourth out on Museo's second base is four to six. Gordon to Boudreau. Lou dropped the ball on the left field side of second. But picked it up just before Museo came sliding in. That chop's Johnny Mays down to one hit and two trips. And in the first base, by virtue of the field's choice, as the inner slaughter comes up, he hasn't officially been at that because he walked his first time. Masterson stepped off the mound off the rubber just as the play down by Charlie Berry call time. The outfield is deep to the right. Boudreau is playing just 12 or 15 feet to the left of second base. Slaying on a miss.

1:16:41Strike one. You may recall last year in the All-Star game at Rigglyfield that one of the great plays of the contest was a position play by Lou Boudreau at the expense of slaughter. Left handed Johnny Schmitz of the Cubs is winding up for the National Liggers. A curve ball outside, one and one. It was indicated to me prior to the game by Eddie Dyer that Schmitz might be the second starter, the second pitcher. But he at that time wasn't certain. Masterson throws one, a fastball way outside, and the count is two and one. The score, National League All-Star is two, American League All-Star is one. But it's in the early stages of the game that must go at least nine innings. The weather looks good. A little prospect of rain. Here's the pitch. There's the ground ball that goes slowly down the third base line, and it is going to be an infield hit. Keltner had to let the ball roll. It rolls 90 feet right next to the bag.

1:17:42Mies went to second and was long fence there, and slaughter. Race over first base down the right field line was a lazy little infield roller. Runners on first and second, and that is hit number five off the delivery of Waller Masu-Fen. Keltner had no alternative because he never could hope to catch slaughter at first. Dobson runs back out of the bullpen as Pathco steps in. He grounded into a force out at last time. He's a right-handed. Inside ball one. Last time at bat with slaughter on second base. Pathco forced Mies at third. Mies on second base, rather, and slaughter on first. Here's the pitch. Outside, and it's two and nothing. Rashi continues to warm up. Dobson did not go out there for the purpose of replacing him. He had made a trip to the dugout and took a turkey's towel back out, which is a very useful implement on a day like this.

1:18:44Schmitz, a left hander, is still warming up for the National Leagueers. Masterson throws. There's a ground ball that goes to Gordon. Gordon flips to Boudreau and the fourth on slaughter winds up the inning. That one went four to six. And in the third inning, no runs, two more National League gets, no errors, two runners left. The score is National League All-Stars 2, American League All-Stars 1. During his career with the Washington Senators, Walter Johnson pitched seven opening day shutouts. Mickey is the left-handed batter and the first pitch by Branker is right over for a call strike.

1:20:50Vernon has a batting average for the season of 260. This is his second All-Star game. Outside, one in one, Vernon has two previous at-bats in all-Star competition without a hit. Branker's start just wind up, throws, and it's a half swing, but Mickey checked it out. And took one low to one. Usuals to run Homer accounts for both National League runs and Hevers home run for the Lowen American League. There's a foul ball off to the left. The count now is even up to and to. Meantime Johnny Smith's Chicago Cub South Pause bearing down in a warm-up capacity for the National Leagueers. This will countless Bear Out Brankers last inning on the mound and Vick Rashi will replace Walter Masterson.

1:21:51Come to the start of the fourth. Vernon waits outside, ran through, and the count has been run out again. Cabbage may be the new catcher because Yogi Berra just took over from Bertie and took Rashi's last few pitches. There's ball four. Mickey Vernon gets aboard. The bass on balls to Mickey puts him on first base in Louis this teammate Walter Masterson and Pat Mullin of Detroit comes into the batter's box. Pat struck out as the lead off batter for the American League. Tommy Henry comes out into the on deck circles. The American Leaguers have a time run on first base in the last half of the third inning. Third bass on Pat go in close. Five ball one.

1:22:57The National Leaguers are probably not certain of the tactics that will be used by Bucky Harris. But third bass on Pat go in close in the event of a bunch. There's a stretch. Ball two outside. They looked that time as though Mullin was just about to swing on it. Two and nothing. The good ball game. Last year the American Leaguers won a close one. A game in which Johnny Maye's homeers. All three runs today have been a result of round trippers. Ball three. Bass ball high. And Bricka says new ball please. Charlie Berry is quick to reply and he gives Walker Cooper anyone. Sometimes there's a little roughness on a ball that a fit you doesn't like or a smooth spot. Or maybe it's strictly psychological. He just gets it into his mind that it's the baseball and not a temporary lack of control.

1:28:01Or he believes Sain is going to be a better fireman. He probably has earmarked Sain for a relief roll. Strike, call. Pass ball over the inside corner. This is the first inning in which Branker has found himself in anything approaching serious trouble. He's pitching behind a two to one lead. And his previous only bad pitch was a home run ball by Evers. Strike, call. That's caught the outside corner. And the card is two and two. Two ball, two strikes. His first time off, Tommy Henrick went down on strike. He protested, started a little withdrawal, but the decision's good. Here comes... Here comes... Ball three.

1:29:01He started a swing, checked it just in time. And the pitch broke into the dirge. And now the payoff pitch comes up. With Mickey Vernon on second base, Pat Mullin on first base. Both of them fast on the bases. Chuck Dresson hollers something in Mickey Vernon. Red Corridan is coaching Pat Mullin. Here's the big one. Strike. A throw to third base is not in time. And he came to rest just to the left of Commissioner Chandler where the bat boy, a tired as a St. Louis Brown, picked it up. The mascot's are wearing the uniform to the two St. Louis clubs. Who drew has a season's average of 355. Bob Ball. That hit one of the uprights, one of the girders. And came right down to the foot of Red Jordan. He pretended to be a little more surprised than probably with the gate. The end field is not playing in to cut the runoff. With the exception of third base and pass go,

1:31:04the others are playing fairly deep. Hi. One ball, two strikes. Walker Cooper must be given an orchard because he is playing in the All Star game at the wish of the fans with a very thorny. He is not at his physical best. There goes a drive to right field that will mean a run. Slotter makes the catch and here comes the tying run to the plate and a throw is not in time. It was thrown from deep right field. The other runner Pat Mullin held second base and it is too too as budraw flies deep enough to slaughter in right field to allow Mickey Werner to come home. Not even a throwing arm like that of inner slaughter was powerful enough to gun the ball in from his position which was about 335 feet out in right field. That's the third run driven in for Lou budraw. And he has been in five All Star games.

1:32:07Joe Gordon up. He teams with Lou to defend Cleveland's middle base, the Keystone fact and they are one of the great combinations for all time. Gordon is first time up fly to left. A fast ball inside, ball one. Mullin on second base, hopeful of scoring. Johnny Sainz still bearing down for the national leagueers and the Avedi's needed. Brank of pictures and throws a curve high to or nothing. Food evers in the on deck circle. One of two All Stars, everybody hit home runs in their first All Star time at bat. There's a ground ball down the third base line foul. It was taken by Tato just outside the bag and beans ridden called it foul. It was obvious after it was two thirds of the way down the line that it would be.

1:33:10The All Star game has produced some magnificent thrills. The greatest individual day was with him in 1946, 20 walks, single twice, homer twice, one home run off Rift Sool's balloon ball. The pitch, foul ball. Gordon was trying to draw away from one. The ball struck his bat accidentally in the cottage two and two. Sometimes base hits results from just such a ducking away maneuver is that. And the baseball players like to call them, excuse me, single or double. They rate them the cheapest hits in baseball, but they have upset the apple card in many a game. Mullin is standing just a few feet off second, taking not a long lead. Here comes foul pit just out of the reach of Walker Cooper. Walker has broken a couple of fingers in his major lead career, but Tommy Henry's little finger is just about as bad looking as any of them, and that happened in a softball game.

1:34:12The intent kelton were comparing hands today. Two to the counter. Inside, three and two. Three balls, two strikes. The score is tied to two. And this runs scored by Mickey Vernon after a double steal, and a fly ball was the first not a homerun. There's a ground foul, right five Charlie dressing. One of the fans out in left field, very nearly losing himself apart trying to come after it. The game is bogged down for just an instant. It has been a picture of you all more than anything else. The American leaguers have just one hit, two runs and one hit. Brank of pictures, foul tip. And that one bounds off to the left. Gordon is resisting that strike out attempt on the part of Brank of.

1:35:15Brank of has three strike out so far. The outfield is just the shade to the left. There's plenty of outfield here at Portman Park St. Louis, especially in better and less. The pitch foul ball all off to the left. That hit the gloves of one of the American leaguers. Gordon has been in the batter's box a long time. Brank of pitching, of course, has an approach that had a Carl Hovel won in 1934. He's fan Ruth Gerig, Fox Simmons and Chrono. That was the most memorable single pitching performance of all time. There's a foul ball. Again, Gordon looks up and grins. He's delighting the fans who have chased down those souvenir baseball. The count is still 3-2.

1:36:15There are two men out in the last half of the third inning. In the 1948 Major League Golf Car Baseball game, which is played for the benefit of the player's sentient fund, is a two-two tie. Brank is rubbing the palm of his right hand hard against his jersey and the ball. And he's having some difficulty. Pat Mullin is taking a longer lead off second base. There's the ground ball. This one goes to Pee Wee Reese. Reast throw across the diamond demise and Gordon is out. 6-3. Reast to Mines. One run. No errors, two bases on balls, two stolen bases and one runner left. At the end of three innings of play, the American League, two runs, one hits, two on his left, the National League, two runs, five hits, four on his left.

1:40:45Rache is from Coneces, New York, 190 pounds, six feet, one 28-years-old. A big Husky right-hander. Low outside, ball two, two and nothing. Cooper, his first time up forced Pat Goh for the ground ball to third baseman Ken Keltner. The new battery, Rache of New York, Tubbets of Boston. Here it comes. There's a foul tip right into Bertie's glove in the college 2-1. Tubbets is a native of Nash and the graduate of Providence College. Eddie Dyer continues to coach the third base. His son was working out by the way just before the ballgame, Eddie Jr. Swing and a miss. Cooper went all the way down in the batter's box and he took a savage cutter to Rache fastball. Two two. For the while at least this will be Rache's ballgame since it's high score.

1:41:45There's a ground ball that goes to Keltner. He takes it down on a big hop, guns it across to McQuinn for the out. Walker Cooper goes out, Keltner to McQuinn, third to first. C. Lee Reese is waiting to bat. His first time up he struck out. This is his third all-star game. Reese is one of the most likable characters in baseball. He's from Louisville, Kentucky. He was born in Ekron, Kentucky. Strike call. That was a fastball right down the middle. One man out on the top of the fourth. The national and American league is tied to two. For as she delivers, there's a ground ball that goes to Keltner and he takes a vicious grounder. Throw it to first for the out. McQuinn came up with a nice stop on a low throw. That was one of the harder hit balls of the game. But Reese goes out. Keltner to McQuinn.

1:42:45Two men are out and we now have a pinch hitter. Frank Gustin, a Pittsburgh. He has a batting average of 303 for the year. He's from Hoopstown, Illinois originally, but he's a Pittsburgher now. Brashee's first pitch is low in a way. Ball won. This is Gustin's third all-star game. He hasn't had a hit in three times a bat, but he has a season's average of 303. Brashee winds up low. Ball two, two and nothing. Gustin is one of the reasons why the Pittsburgh Pirates will continue to be a fennet contender this year. The pitch strike calls curveball. Two and one. Currently, Pittsburgh is in second place. Five and a half games back in the Boston Braves.

1:43:49The outfield plays Gustin deep and slightly to the left. The infield straight away. He uses an open stance. Swing on this. Two and two. Brashee is a strong, powerful, right-hander. With a good fastball, good curve and a very conscientious workman. Gustin gets set to the two-two pitch. Strike three down in the dirt. Tevitz throws the first base, and McQuinn gets the put out on the play. It's a strikeout, but he had to be thrown out. Two to three. Tevitz to McQuinn. So Brashee's first inning is a one-two-three affair. At the end of three and a half innings, the score is National League of all stars, two, American League of all stars, two. In baseball, flying as you know, a fast pitch that grazes a batter's whiskers is commonly called a Gillette.

That was McQuinn's second hit in an all-star game. And this is his third all-star contest. So again the American Leagueers have a tie breaking run on second base. Birdie tevets is batting average. It's 286. And this is his second all-star game.

It's three-to-two American League and here comes another run to the plate. The throw is not in time. It's four-to-two with runners on first and third as Richie upsets the dope and drives in two runs. Richie, after swinging and missing two curve balls, found a pitch to his liking. Single sharply to left the old scoring keltoner and McQueen and sending Kevix to third. Pat Mullin is being lifted for John Amaggio. Eddie Dyer is coming out and that may be the signal for the replacement of Johnny Schmitz with Johnny Sane right-hander of the Boston Braves.

1:56:40There's the announcement and that is the signal for a fresh burst of applause. And Johnny Sane is being called in for the National Leagers. After hitting a line-drive foul and then taking another ball, Richie straightened out that foul ball but he had hit previously and hit a sharp line-drive right over the head of third-base mananti-papco. Now there's a neat little mound of National Leagers out on the mound. Red Shane Deenston, Johnny Mies, are the only two who are not currently sharing in it. Richie comes rolling down off the edge and John Sane is coming in from the bullpen. Sane has an 11 and 6 record for the Boston Braves. And this is all happening in the last half of the fourth inning. Sane has been in one previous ball-star game and he was the losing pitcher you'll recall last year.

1:57:41In one inning he allowed one earn run, two hits, struck out one, but he was charged with a defeat. This is the ninth active appearance in an all-star game uniform for Joe DiMaggio. He was chosen 10 times but did not appear one time. This of course is his 10th season in baseball. He has been chosen every time. Johnny Schmitz has fared the worst of all the pitchers in the contest so far because they're just one man out and the last four have reached. He got hootievers on a pop-up. He quieted that home run bad at his. But then Keltner banged a single to left field. McQuinn followed with a single through the middle. Bertie Tevitz got a base on balls. And then Vic Rashi hit a two-and-two pitch into left field. The score at Keltner from third base, McQuinn from second base.

1:58:43And Sane Bertie Tevitz all the way around the third. This is the kind of a day incidentally one of pitcher needs no jacket at first base. What he really would like in all probability is the nice air cooling system that could be installed in his uniform to fool him down and he runs around. Joe the Maggio. Yes, that's. The big fellow has a 302 batting average for the season so far. He has a 2-19 all-star game average. Seven hits and one home run. He's driven in two runs previously. He's suffering from sore heels and sore knees so could not see a two active service. Johnny Sane broke his position on the mound and Walker Cooper is going out to have a chat with him.

1:59:43Even though he is not at his physical peak, Joe the Maggio is a frightening pitcher for almost any pitcher to come to play. Far on a way one of the great baseball players will all time. And he comes from a distinguished San Francisco baseball playing family. He stands straight away, erecting the box, waits for Sane's pitch. And there's a drive to left field, tagging up a third base's seventh, Vueziel makes the play and run number five scores. 2:00:46There's a drive down the right field line that is going to be close to Faric territory of all. In a slaughter ran into one of the grounds, Truman, who didn't get out of the way quickly enough. And his slaughter put his arms around him, I think the gentleman served as sort of a bumper for him. I'm certain that he was considerably softer than that concrete wall. One strike. Rashi was well-rounded second base on his way to third. The ball was fouled by about three feet. Junior Stevens is in the on deck circle. The bat for Lou Boudreau. Hendrick is a left-hander and he hits a high pop-up. Vueziel is calling for it out on the skin of the infield of the left of second. He takes it and that ends the inning. And it was a big inning too, as Hendrick popped up the theory to end it.

2:01:46The American leaguer came up with three runs in that frame on only three hits. There were no errors. One base on balls, the fourth, and there was just the one runner-lone. So at the end of four running to play, the American leaguer have five runs. Four hits, no errors, three runners left. The national leagers have two runs, five hits, no errors, and four runners left. James in the American league, line-up at the moment, had shortstop. Junior Stevens of the Boston Red Sox, in place of Lou Boudreau, Bobby Doar of the Boston Red Sox, in place of Joe Gordon. And there will have to be a replacement in right field Al Farrilla of the St. Louis Browns, in place of Pat Mullin of the Detroit Tigers. Those three replacements swell to a toe.

The outfield is playing Ashburn a little to the left. There's a ground ball that goes to centerfield for the base hit.

And Buddy Curve, the giant, turns around and feels that one. Clips it back to first base on fire, Bill Stewart. One strike to count. The pitch inside, fastball that made Shandies lean away from it.
