national holiday yeah the city shuts down schools closed parades and there are people already out

here Shannon it was a torrential down pit wow yeah from Lexington to Cincinnati and I'm thinking

oh no yeah like are we going to be sitting out in a rain doing this and then we get here in the

skies are cleared there's a parade here in a little bit I mean for people in Kentucky like like

where I grew up in Kentucky Cincinnati was not the team the Braves were the team right so Cincinnati

and the games were not on so Cincinnati was just like whatever and then you go out to the western

part of the state a lot of Cardinals fans like those Cardinals fans out there so and then there's

even parts of the state that like the cups yeah right so I didn't realize what opening day was

reds wise until I started buying season tickets and this is like a whole crazy thing here like they

treat this like we do the SEC tournament but when you say that's a good analogy that's a great

analogy you know even though I'm a cardinal fan opening day of Major League Baseball means

Cincinnati's playing in the afternoon that used to be that that first game was here absolutely now

they've changed that but it used to be the first pitch of the season was always here because this

is the oldest team tip off the baseball season in Cincinnati every year but they don't do that I

guess they had one last nine yes they did um so we're here now we are also where the official reds

radio is so they're right here next to us they are which means that guy's shin and they always

yells at me is gonna be here he he's going on right as we're going off bill cutting hand is that right

yes so maybe that's him that's sorry that's my bill cutting him impersonation why is it

how to restarting like that he's going to be here in just a little bit and I'll get to these

people are looking at me like I'm insane I'm sorry I'm on the radio yeah we're good we're good I'm

just doing my bill cutting him anyway he's going to be here a little bit lighter say John

shorts got a torn he loves you and he loves bill cutting him and now this can be the first

so we've ever been in the same place have you ever met him before never met it you got to

do it during a break or something you know I'm gonna I'm gonna meet him because we've kind of

taught trash at each other from afar but I respect the guy he's a like a legend of radio without

a doubt I just think it's hilarious that he screams like that yes he does and now I'll get to

meet him plus the cowboys gonna be here all the cowboy I'm a little bit to cowboy I am really

excited to meet the cowboy cowboy cowboys how I passed the night yes right listen to the cow you

do too when you were doing over all cowboys see I guess that I'm a cardinal fan but I love

listening to baseball on the radio and he's really good doing the reds on the radio and then

Marty Brineman's gonna be he's a legend a legend and has called Kentucky games yes yeah explain

to me when Marty Brineman did Kentucky games it was in the 80s on the TV broadcast only like when

they were doing the the Jefferson pilot games or whatever he was doing play by play before like

Rob Bromney started to tell me he did something with lighteners game with the 92 Duke game

maybe he was working for westwood one or something like that he might have been working for westwood

one yeah so he's gonna be here and they're telling me he will come on here and talk Kentucky

with me he actually you're gonna geek out I am Shannon he's gonna geek out yeah Marty Brineman

because we've had him on my phone but we've never had him in person you didn't even tell me this

to right now but I just well I wanted to surprise you I want look at you I really I'm kind of

star struck today's like make a wish Ryan Limondon it really is like you're good to like but so

they tell me that Marty Brineman's gonna join us around 10 30 11 something like that he is a

legend he's probably the most famous person I feel like I have his phone number in my phone I've

always said that if you ever met him I think I've met him a couple time but nothing like you not

embarrassed me I probably will promise you will not like like don't rub on me can he sign my

chest or something like that see Shannon this is what I'm talking about I don't have drew here to

kind of calm down because he's on baby watch Mario's roaming around he's interviewing people for

for social media so it's just me and Ryan and you so I'm excited I'm not gonna spend don't worry I'm

not gonna spend all day talking about the reds I'll probably talk about a little bit but but I

I didn't want to be here soak up the atmosphere because I go to this every and and this is I think

could be a lot of fun and thank you the holy grail I mean they were full when we got here yes and

saved us a table to do this it's really quite expected to see how the scent city of Cincinnati treats

opening day up here for the reds and they've done it for as long as I can remember 20 25 years

don't embarrass me with Marty Brineman well first you said the cowboy was gonna be here then you

tie the cowboy I don't think it's coming on the show but Marty Brineman may be coming on this show

I think Marty Brineman is one of my heroes do you think if I could get Bill Cuttingham to come on

I should have him yes yes do you think I should get him on you guys can just yell at each other back

and forth it would be great radio yeah I'm scaring this man right here every time I scream

I'm sorry this is just going to be what it is sir if you're going to sit here okay um

it's crazy it's six hours before first pitch and it's like the SEC tournament downtown national

all right let's talk just a little bit about uh there's a ton again another ton of news

around the world of sports I think the thing that probably Kentucky fans heard yesterday that had

them the most I don't know I don't want to say angst ridden but it's at least the most interesting

there is going to be a parade of things happen here over the next few days with college basketball

you could make an argument that the North Carolina job being open might set off a chain of events

that changes the a lot of college basketball I think it will because normally North Carolina

hires in family so it's not a big disruption this is probably going to be a disruption

the chatter is the the betting favorite right now to get the North Carolina job is Billy Donnell

okay he's plus 175 which is a pretty high number for a coaching change because like normally they

don't know then the guy that I would state I think is second we at which we obviously know about

his coaching bill yes I don't know about you Ryan I don't really care who's the North Carolina coach

I mean I I do think North Carolina needs to go outside of the family I think they're going to I

think they'll hire somebody good if it if they end up getting T.J. Otson Burger whatever that's fine

that they're talking about Tommy Lloyd and Arizona they asked Tommy Lloyd about it and he specifically

like wouldn't answer the question so it's clear he's open for business but what if it's Billy Donnell

okay Billy Donnell who we tried to hire twice and if you'll remember so so let's go over the timeline

when we hired Billy Gillespie we tried to hire Billy Donnell you were saying to me this morning that

Billy Donnell said yes and then changed his mind is that like a really the case if you believe

the people that are in the know they said he verbally agreed and then like two days later call

Mitch Barnard upset I've changed my mind we're going to open a school down here for I think autistic

kids because they don't see an autistic child yeah and that's why he's the reason he gave

I never believed he was buying a horse farm in Brazil don't think he bought the horse farm no I don't

think that was an old school rumor those were early internet days now again as I feel like

an aficionado of old internet we were at the Super Bowl Dave Portney and I went and talked

about old internet because old internet was a different world it was you know it was rag tag you

could get away with things you couldn't now but you also had like strange things happen I think

in Kentucky world Billy Donnell have been bought a horse farm in for sales was maybe the original

the whole world was talking about internet rumor yes agree with that I totally agree with that

then you don't think he bought a horse farm never did okay he never enrolled his kids

it like to Cali high school all those rumors are going around but I do think like the people

that were in the know they said he verbally agreed they were trying to work out the details and he

changed his mind changes mine alright so then when Cal comes let's go for we hired Cali Perry

there were three final candidates which is pretty amazing that these were the three final

candidates it was John Cal Perry Billy Donnell and Tom is that's the that's like I mean that might

have been the best coaching search of all time yep this man did you see Shannon I wish you could see

behind me there's an old man and I'm not I'm not make I you know me I would not make fun no we're

just there was an old man he has dressed Shannon in a Pete Rose uniform okay uniform I don't see

stirrups but it's a full uniform and new balance shoes yeah and he came walking over here and he

walked to where we are and he had to look like this is where I stand yeah he did he had to look like

let me interview him or something you are in my spot this is where Pete Rose watch his

stands and then he kind of stared at us and walked off but this man how old do you think that man

oh he's got to be close to 70s right he's got to be in his 70s he's wearing a full Pete Rose

uniform well he thinks it's part of the squad it sounds like I don't know it's kind of cute

it's kind of sweet sort of he probably has he's probably done this for every opening day for 25

years this is what he dresses he rose dot he rose dot yes has he died since the last opening day

I believe so did he died just his past year so maybe this is like his tribute to Pete Rose I

bet he did I bet he's never seen a man that a Shannon wearing a uniform to a day well probably

you sound like you see a little bit of everything out there you got guys pounding beers at 10 o'clock

in the morning yes thank you very much for the press press another chair so anyway um the uh

Billy Donovan so so the story is Mitch Barnhart was going to interview all three guys in Chicago

right yes he had it scheduled Cal Donovan then is a upsets Louisville in the elite eight correct

many people will tell you that Mitch Barnhart was leaning Tom is a and iso beats Louisville Louisville

was heavily favored to go to the final four that was Earl Clark and Terrence Williams okay

all right so then he has to postpone the interview a week so he can go to the final four

Mitch then decides to interview just Billy and Cal he'll interview iso the next week

Billy backs out yeah he only interviews Cal Cal wins him and president Todd over and they

just decide to not wait on iso and just hire Cal it's funny how history works because if Louisville

does if Louisville beats Mitch can stay iso might have been the coach we might never have had Cal

if Billy Donovan doesn't cancel the interview I think he almost certainly gets hired Cal

was probably choice three but timing and events led to him being the coach and obviously it

worked out very well the report at the time that yeah iso was he was also leaning a little towards

being open to taking the Kentucky job it was both sides were open to it so the point is is got

Donovan came close twice now let's get to when we hired Pope uh-huh

Donovan had expressed to Barnhart that he'd be willing to talk about it but not until the

season was over right because the bulls were going for playoffs correct and were in the play and he

said I'm not talking about till season so so Mitch ball had a choice to make do I wait

for the end of the season and hire Billy Donovan but we have no players uh-huh we had no

players and the portal was open and the portal was open earlier last year than it is this year

now it's been postponed until after the season but back then I think Ryan it was open right now

right now I think you're right so he ends up having he decides to not wait on Billy Donovan

so now my question is what if Carolina actually gets Billy Donovan

after all those times he almost was the coach here and he ends up there we were talking

driving up here I ask you are the bulls I think I'll be in the playoffs is he gonna also tail

North Carolina talk to me after the after we're done they're bad this year I don't even know

Shannon are they even in contention for the playoffs they haven't been officially eliminated but this

is his worst year as coach this is his worst year and almost everyone agree everyone agrees he's

leaving at the end of the year no matter what and I believe I'm gonna look real quick I don't even

think they are in contention for the play in this year I think they are below they're like 29

and 43 or something like that so they're out they will not be in the play so they've got

12 more games or whatever but they're not in contention okay so I don't think that worry

so Carolina's timing after our timing kind of hasn't worked for three straight times it might

work for us so let's just play it out North Carolina hires Billy Donovan there's a section of

our fan bases heads will explode thinking you couldn't wait one week to hire Billy Donovan

and for the watching you have to take up for Bardhard I don't think they could

because I don't think we like it the it was moving a lot faster there we already had

Cam Williams I think it already committed right well this is two years ago three I tried two years

ago this is the Lamont Butler that's right so but it will just be interesting if there will be

people that will be if Carolina ends up with Billy Donovan after three times we may have come close

and then not ended up and we couldn't wait into one week to maybe getting well if I'm not

true i two's day and Wednesday were difficult for me um i'm better today but also part of that is

all night just kept getting comments on the text machine really nice thoughtful positive comments

and i do i just wanted to thank everyone for that um you know i do kind of wear my emotions on my

sleeve for better or worse i think that's partially why this show is good but um you know those two

things back to back had kind of eaten at me a little bit but i just want to thank everybody who

reached out and was and was nice i said this to you in the car you could hear it in your voice

yesterday when you were talking about it and the more you talked about it you was like you were

going through a therapy session it may be a little bit i think i think it was it was kind of good

for you and your spirit to kind of talk about it and talk through it and we can hear it you know

it came through in your voice that it definitely upset you and bothered you with the things that

have been been said it bothered me in part because i didn't want those two guys to feel like that

it also bothered me because it became like it's hard for me to know who are the people that are

listening and our fans and who are the people who only have peripheral knowledge of us

because this show has been so successful like there's a lot of people who've never turned it

on once that have strong opinions yes you know what i mean which is interesting because normally

a sports radio show is such a niche that like if you don't listen to it you wouldn't even know

it's happened right right this shows a little bit this is different and so you know you got people

who don't even know when the games are on but they know who we are and may have a strong opinion

having never listened and then you throw in that Mario has done such a good job we show up on

people's TikTok feeds who have no idea about anything we've ever said right and so i just

that was i just had to get through that and people will say i mean don't let it bother you

chances at all the time i wish i could but that doesn't that's not always the people that know

you they know you care i mean you yeah i do care you know and especially when it comes to like

you know the the cousins thing and then Jasper you know he say such a nice kid he was it was

awesome when he came on a problem but then he also like what are you gonna do we saw what happened

in the obviously game so like that balance but i just want to thank everybody for that and uh

and and tell them like you feel like you're in a good better head space yeah i mean better i

i need you know need to just kind of have 24 i didn't turn my phone on last night except to talk

about neighbors i'm gonna go ahead and tell you man that show i've never seen a show that just

gets more and more crazy every episode i watched the first episode and i thought well these people

are a little strange but then i went to number two and then i went to number three and now i'm on

number five and there's a grandmother and she starts doing something that i'm like oh my and

then people tell me when i get to number six apparently episode six is i'm just gonna tell you

spectacle neighbors if you ever think that you are around odd people just turn that show on

it's the best thing i've seen in a long time you just wait till you watch it this weekend

said that he originally uk had said would be hired as a director as a assistant with personnel

he is the job title now is director of roster management it sounds like a gm doesn't it

is this as close to a gm as pop is going to bring up probably for stubbornness because i think he's

got some stubborn anyway go call it a gm so he's director of roster development director of roster

management so i would suggest that means that kentucky now has a gm roster management general manager

i think that's clearly what it is just i want to call it that so there you go are you are you happy

with that yes much needed in this day and age of college basketball you need somebody like that to

help manage your roster yeah and who is he good we don't really know i mean i will say i think

when when when his name first got floated i went back and and read a bunch of his old tweets

because that was really there all there was to rea and i liked what he said about kind of what he

was looking for now i mean the one concerning he seemed to suggest look this is a business we have

to make good offers like things i really agreed with the one thing that concerned me as he said

something like it's not about getting the best players it's about getting players that fit what

you want to do i think we need to get a couple the best players yes but uh but he may have been

saying that because he wasn't at kentucky and it's harder to get those you know but he had very

strong and aisle thoughts i'm sure somebody ksr i think they may have already done it this story if

not i'm sure they will sort of going through his tweet so you get a sense of what his thought

process is it seems like he has already a plan in place how a roster should be developed and and

jake of policec reported last night he was introducing himself to people as a director of roster

management so now that is actually his official title you know this just between us he should say

i'm the general manager of kentucky basketball i know it's on paper we're saying director of roster

management but i'm meeting you know and we have to use the correct title director of roster management

all right i want to go to the phones but we got to quickly talk about the story from Jeff

Teague yesterday yeah you just did you see this story shan and jeft teague i don't know what

you're talking about all right so well if you don't know then you didn't see it jeft teague

that's Marcus teague's brother older brother who played in the NBA for many years played the NBA

was good very good Marcus was probably better in college jeff was probably better in the process

yes okay jeff played at wake for us yep all right so according to jeff his coach i think

when he's at wake for us died skip processor oh yeah which uh which is while he was at wake for us

and the ncaa gave all the players at wake for us a waiver back then that because he had passed they

could transfer to somewhere so jeft teague said his phone immediately started ringing and coaches

were called he decided in in it up decide not to leave but he got a call from Kentucky

and he said that Billy Gillespie one of the assistant coaches shan and called jeft teague at wake

for us to recruit him then put Billy on the phone and Billy got on the phone and goes hey man

just wanted to say i don't think you're good enough to play at Kentucky yeah well why would you

call him if you're gonna tell him that called him to tell him that he wasn't good enough to play

at Kentucky and then you look at the players that Billy after his coaches just died no way

you look out here yeah like i said i'm looking at the players that Billy had lined up to come here

and then there's jeft teague you say jeft teague like why not just shannon not calling yeah can we

call somebody right now and tell them they're not good enough to play at Kentucky i mean yeah my

jeft teague was like i just kept saying like why did you call me it's true why did you call me

if you just want to tell me i'm not good enough call it can you it's kind of crazy we got his brother

after our coach before a great different coach but our coach called up and told his brother

hey by the way you're not good enough to play here so the jeft teague just tell this story or

he just told the story and Marcus teague is on his show with him and jeft teague was talking about

they were talking about tubby smith and i think the co-host thought this story had happened

with tubby smith happened with Billy Gillespie and and and then after it was over jeft said that

he later found out from jody meeks he and jody beeks became friends that jody basically told

jeft that Billy was crazy say when he scored 50 you remember when he scored 50 oh yeah

with the adjustments he made at halftime all these games and then when they would play better

and this is why are we better to start I don't know that I mean I I will grant you I think he seems

to do a very good job at halftime adjustments maybe not against Iowa State but in general in

general for the season he produced it then why so much struggling to start again I don't have

an answer for it yeah and then what players should we get I mean I don't know if Bill Selford tires

we may get tired and stokes if he doesn't I mean Dink paid I thought was we had a good chance

and now Jason Hart is gone which was his point of contact so I don't know I ask you this driving

you know they were somebody that called me and asked me to to give me a chance to do something again

and so uh had a chance to do it and it was fantastic did you think that might not happen

did you think that like maybe oh yeah well yeah i mean you always no you know i i i i thought it

might not happen to answer your question but i never believed that was going to happen there's

big difference you know when you go dark and you start saying it's never going to happen again

and that kind of thing but i really never um thank god really never went down that road one of

the things i was the reason i wanted to have you on i'm i'm someone that has always in life thought

about you know good people can make mistakes right and you you can have it and then like how

it's it's stinks and then how do you move on like what does that feel like and and i think your

case is really interesting to me in that you made a mistake that i know you regretted and apologize

and then you had to like bounce back what was that process like for you well i mean even the

night that that i got fired back in august to 2020 i remember getting back home and look there a

lot of people that that are comfortable talking about their faith uncomfortable talking about

their faith you know there's a meme out there about me talking about being a man of faith and all

this kind of thing and you know that's fine but you know the bottom line is is i i truly believe

that you know look maybe not maybe i had definitely i think gotten a lot of little too big for my

bridges and probably need to be humbled sometimes and so you know god says hey look you want to do

it your way it will do it your way and then i'll just make sure that if anything needs correcting

around here that we'll take care of that and that's exactly what happened and you know i i

i just thought to myself okay i i'm gonna trust his plans a heck of a lot better in my plan and

and you you hope that you come out on the other end is a better a better person i hope and you feel

like that happen i i i i i think so i mean my wife would probably tell you know but she would say no

there's nothing good about well let me ask you a couple of fun questions first of all what's

the best game you ever called sport any sport i think the most exciting game uh i ever called

was in football when boys he stayed beat Oklahoma you were on that game that's right i think that's

the most exciting game start to finish that i've ever had a chance that the most exciting stretch

of games was when i was the announcer for the years on a diamondbacks and about a month and a half

after 9-11 of course we played the Yankees in the world series what an amazing and so we were there

we actually went to ground zero did you see bush throw that bridge that was an amazing amazing

in the eagle flying yeah it was the the ten days seven game world series your team wins in the

bottom of the ninth and uh of game seven it was just it was unbelievable i don't know what time

you have we have to take it's a little bit of a problem can you of course i'd like to talk to you
