主人公伊万诺夫曾是白军军官，因为脸部轮廓锋利，人们给他起了个外号——“剃刀”。俄国革命后，他流亡到柏林，当了一名理发师。
一天，一个陌生男人走进理发店要求刮脸。伊万诺夫很快认出，对方正是几年前在俄国内战期间拷打、审讯过自己的人。
现在，局势彻底反转。
那个曾经掌握生杀大权的人，正仰躺在椅子上，脖子暴露着；而伊万诺夫手里握着一把真正锋利的剃刀。
整篇小说几乎就是一次刮脸的过程。伊万诺夫一边慢慢替他刮胡子，一边回忆当年的遭遇，不断提醒对方：自己的命，现在就在这把剃刀之下。
空气越来越紧张，对方越来越恐惧，却丝毫不敢动。
