321: Why Do Preppers Prep?
About this episode
On January 1, 2025, Los Angeles crews knocked down an eight-acre brush fire above Pacific Palisades and reported it contained. Six days later it came back up out of the ground and became one of the most destructive fires in California history. In this Day 2 episode of National Preparedness Month, I take on the question everybody asks about prepping: why do preppers prep? I walk through four events where the system didn't reach people in time—the Palisades fire, the Texas Hill Country flood, the multi-state 911 outage, and Hurricane Helene—and cover the two Supreme Court rulings holding that police have no constitutional duty to protect a specific person. I also share what the Mind4Survival community said when I asked them why they stay prepared. Preparedness starts with accepting that your survival may come down to you prepping to be your own first responder.
