#391 Do Master Worlds They Said. It'll be Fun They Said

About this episode

I thought Master Worlds was going to be a quick, fun trip to Vegas.Instead, I watched a brutal jumping guard injury, got delayed 14 hours, paid way too much for water, and almost coached one of my best friends out of the Master World title he had been chasing for years. This episode is basically my honest review of Master Worlds from a coach’s perspective. The injuries, the chaos, the weirdness of Vegas, the heartbreak of losing, and the stuff that actually makes the whole experience worth it.Somewhere in the middle of all of it, I got reminded what jiu jitsu competition is really about.Check at our new Skool Jiu Jitsu Curriculum: https://www.skool.com/headnodFree Mental Models Course "Jiu Jitsu for imbeciles" : bjjmentalmodels.com/isuck Register for Grappler 4 Good: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/mission-111/grapple-for-good0:00 Master Worlds Was Supposed to Be Fun2:14 The Jumping Guard Injury Problem10:21 Why I Even Went to Master Worlds13:06 My Perfect 38-Hour Vegas Trip Goes Wrong15:48 Spirit Airlines Delays Me 14 Hours19:11 Losing at Master Worlds Isn’t the End of the World23:37 The Real Reason I Went: Nick Sanders27:29 Nick’s Master World Title Run29:05 I Almost Cost My Friend a World Title30:39 “We Got Him”31:18 Maybe Jiu-Jitsu Competition DOES Matter34:14 My Honest Review of Las Vegas35:26 Vegas Is One Giant Airport Terminal37:01 $6.50 Water Is Criminal41:40 What Makes Master Worlds Awesome47:12 When Jiu-Jitsu Becomes Your Identity50:17 What Losing at Master Worlds Actually Means53:46 Master Worlds Actually Was Fun

I suck at you, Jetsu. You're a round-the-line. You bring your stupid moments back. I guess this is not a blast. The mathematical leader of the Vietnam School is back. Go to Master World, they said. It'll be fine, they said. The worst thing that could happen is you could lose, they said. I watched a lady at Master World's this weekend get a bad guard pull jumped on in her leg broken in half. I assume she's got children. I assume she is the sole provider of her household.

I'm just going to guess. And guess what? Her leg is broken in half. I assume that she is currently a chemist working on the cure for cancer. And she was just about to find it. The two little beakers were mixed together into the cancer cure beaker. And she has it figured out and it's sitting on the top shelf at her office. But now she can't grab it because her leg is broken in half. The worst thing that could happen is you could lose. No, you're going to the desert to fight people who are on TRT over and over and over again. The worst thing that could happen is you could die. What are we doing here? But here's the thing. Master World can also be a really, really, really fun time.

And so today I'm going to give you guys my honest review of Master World's. But first, why not give you my honest review of jumping guard? If you didn't see the viral video that I referenced, there was a female, I want to say it was a black belt match, but I could be wrong. But a match that kind of went viral where there was a bad guard pulled jump and a girl's leg was hyper extended. And so it's not like this one reference is the only reference for Master World's. I guarantee you if you look, you could find multiple cases of this happening at Master World's where the person jumps guard and that front leg gets landed on. And sometimes causes catastrophic injury. If you're lucky, only causes minor injury.

And so one should it be legal, should it not be? I don't make the rules. So I just look at how to deal with them is most of my mindset. If I had a tournament series that had beginners in it, I probably would make it, I'd probably make it illegal. But once you start to get up to a higher level, it would be nice as somebody who doesn't ever jump guard. Yes, it would be nice if we just took that part out of the game. But there are people whose game is built completely around this and I understand it. And I don't think that their goal or their intention is typically to hurt somebody. I know I think in the post that I saw that went viral, there was kind of an accusation of like, hey, this person did the same thing in the next match too. And so if that's the case, if this is part of your game, yeah, you should be banned, I think. But yeah, I don't know.

It's such a hard thing to judge. Okay, so here is why it happens. Just jujitsu bro scientifically. You have to understand it this way. It happens when the person who is not about to jump guard, the person who's staying standing, their weight is in their front leg. Okay, when their weight is in their front leg, we have some type of connection for the guard jump. Usually the person jumping pulls and puts all of their weight onto that person while they jump. Right? And it makes it hard for the guy still standing or girl. There is no sexism when it comes to breaking your legs in guard pulse. Right? But when the person jumps guard, if that foot just had weight on it already, it's actually incredibly hard to take your weight off of that foot as the person still standing. Okay, so you really don't have time. So most of the time when we watch them, here is how you can kind of watch for it.

There are the normal grips of collar. We both have collar. Probably we both have some type of sleeve grip. The normal jujitsu grip that we just hold onto forever. The person is looking for their guard jump. They create an angle to the side. That's why all of the weight goes on the front leg. All the weight goes on the front leg. So they're trying to square back up. That's when the guard jump or jump's guard. If they hit just a little below the waist when the weight is planted on that front leg, it can cause catastrophic injury. Okay, so this is just what's happening. The reason I'm explaining this is because you can learn to deal with it and protect yourself a little bit better. I can't say that it's still not a dangerous thing. But as somebody who's like, if you know somebody's trying to jump guard or you kind of start to get the feel of that, you can learn how to deal with it. The biggest thing to protect yourself, but not only that, but actually to pass the guard right off of it, is to take your weight off of your front leg.

How you do it, how you think about it is we have grips. And you can do this when people do the foot in the hip and just like fall back guard pull to, right? The other day one guard pulled that doesn't cause catastrophic injury, right? Same grips foot goes into the hip and then you fall to that side. As the guy staying standing, if you have good enough connection with your upper body, good enough grips with your upper body, if you pull your heel to your butt, you can literally just kind of step over into a knee cut on most guard pulls, even when people jump guard. But also what you're doing is you're protecting your knee from getting caved in and your ankle from getting caved in, right? The only weight is in your back leg, which is pretty protected by your whole body, right? And so that is just getting in the habit of like when you feel that somebody is going to pull guard that you keep the grips that you have, the person to watch with this is like Lucas Barbosa. There's a lot of other autos guys from that that trained with him that were really good at those they call it like guard pass intercept, but all they were doing was pulling the weight off of their front leg.

They might cartwheel around, they might knee cut around, but they just there is a moment when the person jumping guard has zero control because they are in the air, right? And so in that moment, that's why pulling that leg up kind of pulls you right past the guard. And so random thought on it, most likely will not get changed, most likely that that is going to be the rule is you can jump guard. It's smart to know how to position yourself to not get injured, right? As much as possible, we can't always control that. That's the other thing is like I was joking of like that the girl was about to cure cancer and her leg got broken, most likely. I don't know maybe it was. But there's this thing that my coach always says before jujitsu tournament, especially when he has a lot of new people, okay? He pulls everybody in and it's like their first time competing and he'll give them the old pep talk we can do this. We're going to do that.

And then he finally goes and the worst thing that could happen is you could die. And he says it just like that. And a lot of them will be like shaking their head very intense and then he says that. And they're like panicked and they look around and like everyone kind of smiles and they're like, oh, it's chill, right? This is chill most likely you're not going to die. It is jujitsu tournament most likely you're not going to deal with the catastrophic injury, but it can happen. It is not something that doesn't happen. We don't want to pretend that the intensity of jujitsu competition doesn't increase the chances of injury. How many people I mean drop it in the comments if you competed at master worlds last weekend and you got injured some type of injury of some sort. Let us know what kind because a lot of people are coming away with injuries after master worlds, the guys that won and the guys that lost. And so jujitsu can be dangerous and adding competition to that to me makes it significantly more dangerous. And so I think that it's important to look at the whole guard pulling and kneecaving an argument like this.

What is the risk to reward of like getting rid of it? It's really not a lot of risk to getting rid of jumping submissions besides like or jumping in general, right? Besides some of the stuff looks cool, right? But is there really is really going to change stuff that much? I doubt it, but do I expect any organization to actually make that change? I doubt that either. In at Black Belt, I think like especially like at the higher levels of Black Belt, like in the just at Black Belt, I think that it's something you ideally can position yourself to not let happen, but still jujitsu is dangerous. And these things happen. So here's the thing. Why was I even at master worlds this week week last weekend? Because I did not compete. It was only to coach. And here's the thing. I was trying to get out of it. If you've never been jujitsu con master worlds is so much fun. If you've never been.

But if you've been you've been and it can be an awesome experience or it can drag on because you're coaching millions of matches, right? And so I was like, man, I don't want to go the full weekend. Be there the whole time. Coach every person I've ever met in my life and then just be completely dead by the end of it, right? But I also kind of do want to do that. So my whole job there, my whole idea was like, I'm just not going to go, right? I will just secretly tell like some of the people tell my students that are going for sure, because I didn't have a lot of guys going like two of my students going. Like those guys know I'm not going to be there. It's cool. It'll be chill. And then I just I'll just keep quiet. You know, I'll just say off social media for that weekend. And I get a call about two and a half weeks before from my old pal Nick Sanders friend of the show American hero Nick Sanders black belt school owner all around cool guy. I always tell you guys how much I admire him blah blah.

Nick's never asked me for help ever, ever, ever in our 10 years of knowing each other. We just had a normal conversation about I mean all we talk about is just to competition and how to get better at it. That's been, you know, our friendship for the last 10 years is like we've been really good training partners and then also coaching each other and competitions talking about hey, maybe we could play better this way or you could play better this way. So we just always have had that like really good connection. And he says he doesn't ask he doesn't ask for anything. But he says, hey, you still planning on being a master worlds. Like no, bro. Um, I go, what day are you competing Nick and he goes, I'm going Friday. I go, okay, I'll be there Friday. And he goes, yeah, I'm like, yep, I'll be there Friday for sure. I was only planning on being there Friday. And he's like, okay, sounds good. Don't tell my two students Brian and Kyle. It just so happened that they competed on Friday. I had no intention of being there for those guys, but it just so happened.

Got a Thursday night flight. Gonna be there all day Friday, leave Saturday. What a great, the perfect Vegas trip as short as you can be possible, right? And so Kyle and I are on the same flight. Um, he competes at 1 p.m. on Friday and it's Thursday night. We get to our airport. We get to, um, the, we get to Lambert airport in St. Louis. We're actually flying spirit airlines. Actually, no, I don't think they call it spirit anymore. It's called, I think legally they switched the name to like frontier or something like frontier spirit frontier. It's the same thing. Um, so we go there. Our plane is there. Um, I'm actually on the phone with my best friend and I make a joke that I shouldn't have made. Um, not one of those jokes you shouldn't make it an airport, but just flying spirit airlines. Um, I made a joke that you shouldn't make. And he said, where are you going? He's like, oh, you're at the airport. Where are you going?

Like, oh, I'm going to Vegas for whatever two days. And he's like, oh, cool. He's what airline you flying. And I go, oh, I'm flying, you know, frontier. So I probably won't even make it there. And then we laughed. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. It was a great joke. Great joke, Josh. Good one. You definitely didn't jinx yourself. We're 30 minutes from when this flight is supposed to like take off. We're about to start boarding when I make the joke. It's very obvious that everything's chill and we're about to go. And then they just push it back like five minutes. And we're like, oh, no, I've had this happen before. Then they push it back like 15 minutes after that five minutes. And we get to the end of that 15 minutes. They're not giving us any information of why things are getting pushed back. They're like, we're waiting for someone to check on something. You know, and it's like 630 when we start when the boarding was supposed to or were supposed to take off. Now it's like 715 730 Brian, my student who's competing the next morning.

His brother and he or there. And I call his brother price. And I say, hey, brother, here's the thing. We're in our delayed right now. And I've been on a lot of canceled flights. And it's got the vibe of a canceled flight. And he goes, really, what do you mean? I'm like, dude, they're pushing it back just little increments and not saying a word about it. And nothing's happening. Just like everyone's just standing around. And he's like, oh, what do you think? I'm like, dude, we've looked there are no other flights to get us there on time. Brian competes first thing in the morning. And so the spirit airlines lady jumps on the call and says, hey, I just want to let you guys know we're not taking off till tomorrow at 8.30 a.m. This flight is going to stay. But we're going to delay you guys 14 hours. You're going to be delayed for the next 12 hours. But then we're all going to come back here and leave together.

And so literally, I'm like, we're going to land when Brian is supposed to start competing. And that's what I'm seeing first. And like this sucks. I can't believe that this is going to happen. And sure enough, spirit gets us there right at 14 hours late. I watch Brian's match from the taxi. Timing was off, right? Just like the timing with old guard pulling lady, timing was a little off there, right? And then I just kind of screwed me over a little bit at master worlds. And yeah, that's sometimes the vibe. You're at the tournament. You're yelling to your student. Grab the sleeve. No, no, right hand grabs the sleeve. No, the other sleeve in it starts to click to you. You have nobody in your gym who plays spider guard. And your student is losing on points. And he is stuck in spider guard. And he has no idea what to do. You're trying to teach him jujitsu while the match goes on. And I know you're saying, maybe this only happens at white belt at master worlds. I am watching this happen to black belts. Black belts trying to have a technical conversation in the middle of a match with their coach. And here is the problem.

If that level with that much intensity with that much on the line, there is no way you were going to learn. If you didn't know beforehand, you were probably going to lose that match because of your lack of knowledge. And here is the thing. One of the best ways to fix lack of knowledge in jiu-jitsu is to have the right training protocol to have the right curriculum to focus on the right moves at the right time. And that is what we are doing on our school account that I used to train all of my coaches at my three jujitsu schools had not American jiu-jitsu. All three schools are on the same curriculum week after week. And we do this through our school account. And so if you go to sk o-o-l.com slash head nod, you can check out what our entire next two years of curriculum is going to be. You can also hear why I structure the curriculum in that way. And then if you really want to go through with our school account, you can get all the information, all the stuff that I teach to my coaches about how to share this information to try to make the most well rounded grapplers possible to try to prevent my students from being in situations where I'm having to teach them jiu-jitsu during the tournament.

We're trying to make all of the hard work and all of the problem solving done by the time we get there. And that is only accomplishable with the most efficient and effective curriculum that you can find. And that is the curriculum that we are using. It had not American jiu-jitsu. And that is available to you at school.com slash head nod. I saw a lot of people at master worlds who were incredibly sad. They just walked off the mat as if their life was over because they didn't win the master world title that they wanted to. And I get it. I've had the feeling. I've had the feeling in the same building, you know, and been frustrated from losing and been like, dude, you know, whatever. I didn't my jiu-jitsu wasn't as good. I didn't feel like these things went my way. Whatever happened. But you're just discouraged. You're sad. But also it about 2 a.m. on Friday night or Saturday morning, whatever you would say it, walking through the Vegas casinos.

I saw some sad faces on some people that bet their, you know, last mortgage payment on all on red and they lost it all. And I think it's a different thing. I think those people's life is a lot more rough than you who just lost at master worlds. There's a rule that we have on the podcast. And this is from a Johnny football documentary. If you don't know who Johnny Mansell is, Johnny football pretty much for about three months, the greatest football player of all time. And then outside of that fun guy to hear about. Fun guy to watch a documentary on, but they were talking about how crazy of partiers they were at Texas A&M. And he says, yeah, we have this rule winner lose we booze. And I really loved the catchiness of the phrasing, right? I don't think that that's how you should celebrate jiu-jitsu tournaments unless that's what you want to do.

But like, for example, I was talking to my old pal friend of the show Jeremy brick master world champion at black belt. If you didn't hear. And what are you doing tonight, Jeremy, right after he wins. And he said, well, you know, Josh, going to get pizza. It's always pizza. I said it is always pizza. I forgot that it's always pizza because that is there. You know, that is his celebratory meal post competition. And there is something about having a thing that marks the completion of a jiu-jitsu competition. Like, it not just is just your competition, just any goal, right? A lot of times we put a deadline on a goal. It's like, I'm going to lose 10 pounds in three weeks. But sometimes it's cool to go, hey, I'm going to lose 10 pounds. When I lose 10 pounds, I'm going to reward myself in this way. Hopefully by, you know, not eating not eating Gerdawnos like Jeremy did Jeremy one world's else. So you get to eat Gerdawnos, right? That's a champion's meal.

And so I think it's important to kind of have some type of thing that you go, hey, this isn't the end of the world, whether we win or whether we lose either way. We're going to celebrate our effort. We're going to celebrate the fact that we're there with the right people, right? Life happens really quickly. And sometimes the group that you guys went with at Master World's this year and you had so much fun. And there was whatever 1215 of you and you all talk about how you're going to go back every single year. It may not be that group ever again. It may be much, much, much smaller version of that group for a long time. And so it's important to not get so caught up in the moment. If you lose that you let it ruin the experience. And here's what I mean. There is so much more to jujitsu competition than jujitsu competition.

I will always push off on you guys in the show about how I think jujitsu competition doesn't matter at all. But it actually does. It actually matters a whole lot. And that's what I really want to look at today is parts of it aren't they don't really matter to me or maybe she a lot of people they don't really matter. But some things really do and that's what we're going to talk about. I told you my friend Nick kind of hit me with the hey Joshua going to master world's thing. And so I'm going right and that is really like I was trying to be there for my boy who just needed a dedicated coach. It's a tough division dude. There are so many tough guys in the division. And having to be a coach and athlete yourself is a pain. It's so nice to be able to farm out the coaching thing because then you don't have to think about it. You really don't you can just be like, oh, I am just going to show up and trust what my guy has to say.

Trust what my coaches perspective is and trust my own feeling right trust my own there's like a so much of of the positions that are happening when I'm coaching Nick is me trusting him in a position. I'm like, I don't necessarily know what his thought is here. And then I'll wait a couple seconds and I'll be like, Oh, that's what he's thinking about. And then I can go back to coaching right but that came from us doing this for 10 years, you know, and that was like that was what I was thinking with him was just like man. I told my wife and this is when I ask her like, Hey, is it cool if I go do a short trip. It ended up being a shorter trip than I thought right. It ended up only being one night instead of two. But, uh, Hey, can I do this short trip. I really know that Nick is going to win master worlds. I want to be there for him. And she goes, yeah, of course. I'm like, OK, perfect. Thank you. And that was that was that went got my ticket and, you know, chose spirit airlines and, you know, and I know you're going to be like, Hey, Josh, maybe next time you should take Southwest, right? Maybe next time you should take something else that doesn't do this to you over and over and over again.

But here's the thing is just not how I live my life. I can't I can't help it. This is just who I am as a person, right? And I don't even remember what the conversation was but on our flight home. One of Nick's students actually said to me, wow. So fast and loose is just how you live every second of your life. I don't like I don't even know what that means, dude. I'll just I just in me every second of my life. I don't even know what that what you're talking about. And so, um, as Nick starts to really, I mean his first match, super dominant just easily beats the guy. But after that, I'm telling you the division was tough. Every single match. I'm watching the his opponents before to kind of give him, um, some info on, you know, how to do with this, how to deal with that. And or what I think we should play of his in really what we ended the conversation we basically ended up having every single time is, hey, I think we should stick to game plan A.

That was really what the pre match conversation was a maybe I would say, hey, he might have this later on. He might think this way later on, he might be tough here later on. But the game was literally just go to plan A, go to plan A. And that was that was what we talked about, right? Do you do jujitsu? Most likely yes. Are you an imbusel? Who knows? If you are, no worries. I have a super secret gift for you that is only for I suck at jujitsu show listeners. BG mental models is giving us a free copy of their course with Robert Nackie jujitsu for imbusels. All you have to do is go to BG mental models dot com slash I suck to claim your free gift. Let's get back to the episode. And so as we're going to that next match like dudes tough Nick still puts it on him going to the next match dude's really tough Nick still puts it on him.

Now there is this point in it's about it's going to be our final. Okay. So Jeremy and Nick are about to clear out this division my just you know art artwork teammates right. And so about to clear out this division. And waiting for nix in my final match and I mean you know you fight beefy guys it in the master's division it's right at about 37 years old men really hit another growth spurt. And it really hits their jaw it really cuts them up really good they get really lean it's like something happens in their metabolism where there's a sausage on just shoots through as long as they're doing jujitsu and they're planning on competing in master worlds. And yeah Nick was about to compete against the Hulk while they do it was angry right and Nick and I had our pre match conversation like this how we're going to do it.

And it's working perfectly the game plan is working perfectly everything I think we're up a couple advantages everything's chill we're so locked in I swear if Nick Nick and I are thinking we're one brain at this point I swear to you. And then I took too much control of the brain. And I bro I literally I could feel the moment the world paused because I knew I said the wrong thing and I said Nick put your right foot there and he was just listening listening and he put his right foot there and while it was going I go wait that might not oh no in it almost I mean like when I say almost it should have been a lot of fun. And I was like I'm not sure if I'm going to get a second advantage and I'm not sure if I'm going to get a second advantage and the dude's weight is just a little in the wrong spot for him.

I over had does a back roll and ends up in like top side control and as soon as he hits it it was like for me they his wife actually posted a video of where it goes in on her face and then it goes on on my face and you can see my face is like what you don't realize is I'm going oh my gosh I almost just lost my boy this master world title that he's been working for 10 years to get I almost just lost it for him because he trusted me he put his faith in the wrong person and the clock starts to go down. And it's George W. Bush once said we got him Nick wins Jeremy wins on the other side champions it was look I always tell you guys to get to competition doesn't matter it's irrelevant don't worry about it don't put any stress on it and I agree that in that sense Jeremy my buddy

Jeremy my buddy his favorite saying in the world is it's just you get to don't worry about it just show up it's just you just do the hard work it's just you get to and it is just you get to but there are other things that come with it like friendship like having homies for a long time they're going to get you to do it. For a long time there if you think about if you think about this a friend that you've had for 10 years that has remained a good friend the richest person on earth can't buy that they have to invest 10 years it is not something that money can buy there is so much value in that and we gain friendships like that by just doing jujitsu by just trying to be a positive part of the community and that was it was so cool for me to get to count down the timer and see to see Nick win that it was so cool when I told him the wrong thing he made a crazy move and still one and people were going that was so cool that was awesome I was like I told him to do that

that was on me you know and so you know you can always that's the beauty of being a coach is like I say we win together and we lose together but we just abandoned you if you lose you know it's just like all about it's just all about coaching from what I've learned from the big coaches as you only pay attention to the people who are really good that's how you win right and then everybody else screw off right get rid of them right and so yeah I just it was it was so cool to get to see this moment where my friend accomplished this and for Nick he knew he was going to win right he really did and I knew he was going to win too and so it's weird you finally have that day where it just like you know it is going to be and then it happens and then you're like man I thought that I was going to win man I thought that I would be going crazier and stuff right it's just so it's so cool to get to see that and witness that and after that I see Nick I give him a hug and it was the normal bro hug tries to get me the the two pat and then pull away and I get palm the palm I get a gable grip around him and I was like nah nah nah not today buddy you may have you may have kept all these other big

ultra heavyweight guys from hugging you but I'm hugging you bro you're not getting away from me and it was just so cool to share that moment with one of my friends right and get to see that and experience that and that part of master worlds was absolutely awesome now let me tell you about what I hated what I hated about master worlds let me start with this. Vegas is the worst place it really is look I know that I have Vegas listeners I'm sorry I'm sorry guys I actually have very good friends that live full time in Vegas and I'm sorry I'm sorry but it's just for me for me it's a bad place okay let me let me lay it out for you I was able to leave my airport terminal in St. Louis when they announced that we're going to have 12 more hours of layover

in drive 20 minutes to my house and sleep and then go back to the airport go do the experience again pray the whole time and then eventually take off just to miss one of my students matches thank you spirit airlines and after I did that after all of that I started to recognize one once you get on the plane and you fly into Las Vegas you never leave the terminal Las Vegas is one giant airport terminal and I know you go no no no there's this point that I go outside I go outside of the airport terminal and then like a taxi picks me up and Uber picks me up and then they take me to a hotel room and I'm one giant casino for days and you know I'm eating over price food I'm drinking overpriced water in like the craziest way and you can't get away from it you can't go well this place is expensive I'll just go to this place it's agreed upon because we're one giant airport terminal that if we keep all prices high no one can no one can escape

so once you land I want you to think about this when you go to Vegas next time once you land you're going to master worlds whatever the first thing that you will check you'll maybe you'll go all we need an Uber we need whatever it's actually simpler to just take a taxi but the first thing that you're going to check is you're going to say to yourself when do I leave and you don't even think about it in nights and days nobody thinks about it in nights and days it's ours how many hours are you in this giant airport terminal that is called Las Vegas you are in this how many times am I going to spend $6.50 on 16 ounces of water I mean come on somebody help me out one of the one of the I mean we're at Jiu Jitsu con you have all of these different booths all over you guys would crush it if you were selling cold water for like $4 a bottle you guys would just be printing money

I need there's a million t-shirt companies we all know you're buying the keys from the same warehouse just throwing your logo on it get me a water dude get me something that helps me here while we're all boiling in hell together that's the thing about suffering is it sucks to do it by yourself but shared suffering it's actually not so bad because when you have friends around to to deal with whatever you guys are dealing with you can almost you can almost laugh about it and really when you look at the ice suck at Jiu Jitsu show over the last almost seven years of running this podcast we have all found that that is something that we can do together the 10 of you guys that listen to the show is we have found that we can laugh together we can hang out together and of course it's so much fun that we're able to keep this podcast free because we're getting approached by so many other people wanting to advertise on the show that only happens because you guys keep listening but we also need your guys's help right now we are in a war with every other Jiu Jitsu content creator and the only way to win that war is to appease the algorithm gods and so I need you guys

if you're watching on you to give me a like give me a comment let me know what you like about the show let me know if you hate the show any comment is a good comment for us and if you're watching on Spotify give us a five star review this would be so helpful for us and so if you guys do that we can keep the show free forever coming out weekly and entertaining you for all of eternity even if you quit Jiu Jitsu you will end up still being entertained by the world by the ice of the Jiu Jitsu show because we all suffered together with terrible sound quality for years with not being able to get good guests with me saying Jiu Jitsu completely wrong and saying I'm way too much but guess what we are out of that dark forest and we are now to a completely new path is long as you guys appease the algorithm gods for us give us a comment give us a like give us a five star review let's get back to the episode in Las Vegas no offense anyone from Las Vegas I know that was excessive to lead with no offense and then to go that wild on it but what I'm trying to explain to you is you send me there the my my hair is becoming less volume is by the second it's unbelievable why because it's so dry there because we're in the desert

you're sending all of us into the desert to fight enhanced human beings it's the enhanced games but for old people and fighting in bathrooms it is just anarchy but it's a fun time it's a fun time here's another complaint that I have and this is just between me and you guys and I'm not trying to be that guy okay I'm really not trying to be that guy most likely it's just me and like three of you guys we've been listening to the show and so I can just say stuff like this and we just keep it quiet we don't tell anybody but wouldn't you guys rather see me be interviewing people at the rest of worlds I mean look I'm not trying to be that guy I'm not trying to be that guy obviously it's my own arrogance it's obviously my own arrogance right but here's the thing the audience of the eye suck at jujitsu show in the in the overlap of people who want to go to master worlds and go to master worlds is insane it really is and yeah I'm just I shouldn't say that that's something we shouldn't talk about we should just keep that between you and I maybe we should cut that out of the podcast Brian but here's the thing I just think that

when you go there there are certain things that are really cool that are really really enjoyable some parts of it are like man if you stay at one of the IBJGF's hotels you're gonna brush shoulders you're gonna wait in line at the only Starbucks that they have at the Westgate and you are going to be standing behind to Marcel Garcia in in front of Hodger Gracie and you will just be like this is the craziest moment of my life right and so there are those interactions that are really cool you may bump into the eye suck at jujitsu show guy I actually was recognized way more it makes it you know to where I should stop doing such ignorant stuff all the time but you gotta be who you are right and so what's happening though we go to these kind of tournaments we want this cool community jujitsu experience and I feel like we're getting really really really close the amount of people is amazing right you there's no way

that you will see all the people that you know in that building right you will just the size of this building the 60 mats that there are it really shows one the Gigi Jiu Jitsu is still poppin bro it is still what most people are participating in you can say well people your views in this or there's views in that no one really cares on the day to day the people that are going to keep doing Jiu Jitsu or a lot of training in the geek right in Gia no gear really becoming more separate things even when you have like Jiu Jitsu con is like the adult tournament that's in the same building as master worlds as you have that you're having no key only people show up for that tournament to win that tournament and what does that say it's not like oh IBJJF ADCC or separate it's like Gigi Jitsu in no Gigi Jitsu are really really becoming more defined as two separate sports and this is good because there is room for it there were 8,000 competitors it it's a master worlds right and so you go this is growing exponentially but here is my

problem with it is like there is a lot of the same ideas are being repeated so much it's unbelievable the level of originality in Jiu Jitsu is getting to zero in the level of copycat chat GPT I want to make a Jiu Jitsu t-shirt company and I have $20,000 what should I you know put all my money into and then I'm you know in this little market where it's not it's not okay here's what I'm trying to say I'm trying to say something without being mean but here's what I'm trying to say three years from now a lot of the booths that you went to and you bought products from it the Jiu Jitsu con won't be there they won't exist as a company people go oh that's a cool shirt and you'll go yeah I can't find their website anymore it's weird you know and so this is

Jiu Jitsu is growing exponentially there are certain people who are really benefiting from it but as a community it's more of just like it's more of that people care about the cloud of owning a Jiu Jitsu t-shirt brand of running a Jiu Jitsu podcast of whatever else of winning a tournament and that's what they base their light on and the problem with cloud is it's very easy to get it's just you if you're willing to compromise morals right you can get cloud most people could get cloud with just uh not caring about compromising their morals right and you see it like I see this in Jiu Jitsu school ownership all the time is people will share a picture over and over or a bunch of

pictures over and over from the same day where they had a seminar and it was like 20 to 30 extra people on their mats that aren't their people and there's nothing wrong with sharing that right because that's a really cool thing to see but when they then change all of their ads to make it look like that is what their gym is and guess you could say oh they're just trying to they're just trying to drum up business they're trying to but when you show up you're gonna realize that that's not true when you show up there's four people you'd be like oh that was fake right and so to me I just think in the in the Jiu Jitsu space you see people and they do this just for cloud they have a Jiu Jitsu school that they that will never make money and it's because they go this is like this is cool this is my identity right and like something for me that I've been struggling with for a while now is a lot of my life was based on being an adult black boat Jiu Jitsu competitor it was first about

getting there and then once I was there was about doing the best that I could there right trying to be the best and then not that I'm not going to do it anymore that I'm not going to compete anymore or something like that but it's very obvious to me that that time is going to end regardless of if it's right now or if it's three years from now that time ends and I can see it in myself the problem with basing my identity on being an adult black boat competitor because one day soon I won't be and if I keep telling people I had a friend one time and he hadn't competed in probably seven years literally and he was telling me well yeah in my division this guy this guy and this guy the toughest guys he was a black boat right but he was he was no longer an adult black boat he was no longer even attempting to compete he hadn't been training hard it's very obvious but he says yeah these three guys are the tough guys in my division like brother your

division's master two here those are not the tough guys and those are tough guys that adult in your weight class those aren't I don't even know if you can make that weight class anymore and I realized oh he had built his identity around being an adult black boat competitor and then when he no longer was he still has to pretend like but I am I'm about to make this come back though right it's like I'm I'm playing on this like yeah you're saying you're a division we haven't fought any of these people because you've been so far away from that division for so long right and so yeah I just think that that is why so many people are doing what they're doing in jiu jitsu is to try to get clout it's why they like I said it's it's probably why I started to have a podcast now it makes me super uncomfortable when people like come up and give me hugs about the you know like oh do I love the show like they're giving me a hug and then walk away I'm like well they're just messing

with me with somebody really really that many people listen to the show especially the interaction I had at master worlds in the one day that I was there it's crazy how many people will come up people were coming up and saying two different people said I never heard your show before but I was looking for something to download for the plane and I downloaded the thing that was because it was on a Thursday morning right I like I downloaded the one of the top things when I searched jiu jitsu podcast and your episode came up and it was really funny and I'm gonna listen now and then I would say something to them and they would be like oh my gosh I didn't realize you were such a bad person I'm not gonna listen anymore and so you know you win some and you lose some right that's I think the big lesson when it comes to losing at master worlds is it's just practice for next year you know and that is the thing is understand that this is if you let it be jiu jitsu is this long experience and it's so much fun and you can build friendships that will last a lifetime that you

would never build in any other sport in any other job in any other situation and that is where the value is the the secret just like every kids movie that you've ever seen it is not the journey it's the friends that you make along the way and sometimes that means like hey I am sad that I lose I hate that I lost I really thought I should have won maybe the ref really did screw me but sometimes just understanding that like yeah but in the big picture I'm so happy that I'm here you know like I'm so happy there are decisions I could have made in my life that could have not had me with this group of people that is just awesome and fun to be around and that is all I want to leave you with today is it's a silly it's a silly answer to the problem but should you go to master worlds or not should you go to jiu jitsu khan or not I mean one you should only do it you should boycott it unless they're having Josh McKinney do the interviews just craziness that you don't you know

there's no there's no hot takes booth nothing right who cares if you guys want to hang out and give hot takes at the hot takes booth why don't you come to Fuji worlds in right outside of Indianapolis that is October oh my gosh is it 10th and 11th Brian put it up put it up on the thing and then maybe it's maybe it's the week after but regardless Brian just put it up on the screen we'll make sure to put a link in the description but we're going to be at Fuji worlds Google Fuji worlds do just look it up yourself you don't need me to tell you the date it's in October it's going to be super duper lit and you're going to be able to say whatever you want if you want to go and get completely canceled from your job from your church from your jiu jitsu school come up and leave a crazy hot take and we will post it and it'll ruin your life or leave something funny and we'll post it and it'll make you go viral and everybody's like hey you're the guy who you know hates that women do jiu jitsu and so yeah maybe that wouldn't be good either

I don't know it's definitely going to be fun we're definitely gonna you know play it fast and loose we might do interviews it was cool the beauty of master worlds as you see so many people as we're walking we see Tim the guy who is running the Fuji worlds hey Tim we haven't really gotten to talk much about how you want us to present and he gave us the oh I was hoping you guys could do whatever you want speech and that's my favorite speech that's the best speech anyone could give me is like yes could you just do what you want you just have creative control could it be the thing that gets the Fuji worlds canceled no it won't be it won't be don't even say that don't even say that out loud we're gonna keep things super PG and super chill but they're gonna be lit and they might not be and so I just want to close with this master worlds was supposed to be fun they said

and after a canceled flight that was postponed for 14 hours after missing one of my students matches after spending way too much money on water after not sleeping at all after getting to Bellagio found too late and they weren't even fountaining anymore after all of that master worlds was so much fun it's so much fun to be a part of a really fun community and actually contribute to that community and make it better that is when they say it is more blessed to give than to receive that is what that means when you give to the right community you receive so much more in return that is not even quantifiable and that's what I want to leave you guys with is it's all about friendship hug your homies tonight make sure it's over a five second hug when they try to pull away don't let them

let them know how much you love them and appreciate them because this thing ends it ends one day you're not going to be training with these people one day maybe you're not going to be training one day and the one thing you don't want to be is sad that you didn't enjoy it that you put it all about winning master worlds you made it all about winning the next tournament you made it all about this unattainable goal to push yourself to be better and you didn't realize that it's the homies that push you to be better it's the right people around you that push you to be better that's what it's about hope you guys enjoyed today's episode and I hope that it helps you guys suck just a little bit less at Jujutsu have a great day guys
