Now, you know this, right?
1:07
Every new year, millions write down the same resolution.
1:11
Lose weight, get healthy.
1:13
Maybe it's finally take control of their lives.
1:15
It's like, yes, I can do this.
1:16
Yet, by spring, and usually it's about 14 to 21 days into it, actually.
1:23
Those goals often wilt like forgotten gym memberships.
1:26
They go by the wayside.
1:27
You thought you were going to lock in some change by saying,
1:30
I'm committing here's my money, but nope, didn't happen.
1:34
Because too often, we're winning the wrong race.
1:38
Bad habits are the easy path.
1:40
They require no thought, no discomfort, no extra effort.
1:45
And you don't have to wrestle with tough choices or push through resistance, right?
1:49
You just do what you've always done.
1:51
Reach for convenience, skip the workout, indulge the craving.
1:54
It's like, oh, I'll start again, Mende.
1:57
It went to have my wonderful Mexican dip in my queso and my salsa and my chips,
2:04
and I just overdid it on Friday night.
2:07
I'll just kind of coast to the weekend, and I'll start on Mende.
2:10
Mende becomes Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
2:12
You know, you're back to Friday, and you're like,
2:14
oh, and now three weeks later, you're like, what happened?
2:17
And now it's not January anymore.
2:21
And you're freaking out going, I'm supposed to be getting into a swimsuit.
2:25
I'm supposed to be looking like this.
2:28
You look in the mirror and you keep having those same conversations with yourself.
2:32
You're aging faster.
2:34
You don't like the way you look.
2:35
You walk into your closet.
2:37
You have nothing to wear.
2:38
You look at the scale.
2:39
You hate the number on the scale.
2:40
You look at, you know, and you go shopping.
2:42
You look at the numbers on the hangars,
2:44
and you're like, I don't like those numbers.
2:45
But yet, you keep doing the same thing over and over and over again.
2:49
And as for a result, everything you say you want slips further from reach.
2:55
That's the wrong race.
2:57
Racing toward temporary fixes while ignoring what really drives lasting change.
3:03
Living fully alive isn't about hitting some number on the scale,
3:06
or squeezing into last year's genes.
3:09
It demands deliberate, confident decisions and pulling your weight in the long haul.
3:15
That hard work is exactly where most tumble though.
3:19
Life's daily chaos throws distractions your way,
3:22
and it's tempting to retreat to what's easy.
3:26
Because what if you had a what if?
3:29
Okay, yeah, hang in there with me.
3:32
What if you said, what if I could really get rid of those bad habits?
3:35
Yeah, they're going to, you know, kind of say peekaboo every once in a while,
3:38
but what if you could refuse the easy path, those bad habits?
3:42
What if you could break free from the habitual trap and live fully alive on your terms?
3:48
How do you think you'd feel?
3:51
That is your kiss to keep a simple strategy.
3:55
I was having a conversation with some absolutely good friends who I do life with.
4:01
It's our mastermind.
4:02
It's a small but very intimate group, and we love each other
4:06
through thick and thin.
4:07
We celebrate the good, bad, and the ugly.
4:09
I mean, we just go through life together.
4:12
And these people have been in my life for a very, very long time.
4:17
And we were going over, you know, what we were doing in the past 30 days and kind of giving
4:25
a check in, and then we talked about some goals we had for the new year.
4:30
And basically almost everybody touched on health some way or another.
4:35
And I thought, you know, a couple people used a number and others kind of used like the weight
4:40
say we're lifting and things like that.
4:42
And as I was listening to it, I was like, you know what?
4:45
I don't want to put a number.
4:47
I mean, yeah, I have an idea in mind.
4:49
I mean, I don't want to just lose five pounds.
4:51
I want a lot more than that, probably more like 20 pounds,
4:54
seriously, or maybe even more, but I want to feel comfortable in my skin.
4:59
And what that looks like now versus when I was 20 years old or 35 years old,
5:03
or now over the hill of 50 years old.
5:06
Yeah, I'm over a half century.
5:08
And life looks different.
5:09
Your body looks different.
5:11
And so for me to put a number on it, I was like,
5:14
that just doesn't make sense.
5:15
Now this is all going through my mind.
5:17
And I was like, how do I really want to live?
5:19
Like, how do I define healthy living?
5:22
And I'm not always about like slapping on a number.
5:24
I wouldn't lose 20 pounds and three months or whatever.
5:27
This time I said, no, I want to live fully alive.
5:34
Because isn't that what it's all about is feeling fully alive?
5:38
I mean, don't you want to be able to wake up going like, yes, this,
5:46
You're like, yeah, I may not actually get everything done,
5:48
but I know I can do what I need to do today.
5:51
My joints don't ache as much.
5:53
You know, my back is, well, I've had five kids,
5:56
but that's all right.
5:57
It's still I can get up and I can move.
5:59
And it feels awesome.
6:01
Because see, here's the thing.
6:02
If you continue self sabotaging your efforts and making excuses for your bad habits,
6:07
because that's what we're doing.
6:08
When we slip away and we've had all that wonderful food,
6:12
that not chosen the queso and the salsa and the chips and everything,
6:16
and we're like, oh, well, I've just fallen off the wagon.
6:19
I'll just wait till Monday.
6:22
What happens is you're going to stay confined
6:24
within the old habitual habits that cause you to fail more.
6:28
And you're going to be living out your excuses
6:31
more than living fully alive.
6:34
My friends, you can do better.
6:36
Literally, you can do better.
6:38
However, that means you're going to have to make some changes to live fully
6:42
alive. And then you're like, great.
6:45
I mean, how does this really make sense?
6:47
Well, let's try to look at three things today to live fully alive
6:50
and what it looks like in real life.
6:54
define health as vitality.
6:58
We do it a lot, right?
7:00
We obsess about our pants lost.
7:03
It's like, yes, I'm burning 500 calories.
7:06
But how much did you eat?
7:08
So we're calorie counting.
7:10
Oh, if I walk on the treadmill,
7:12
you do realize when you're walking on that,
7:13
the figures that you use are on average.
7:17
So you may not be actually doing what your body needs
7:19
because do you fall in the average?
7:22
You know, human being calculation that they do with the studies and research
7:25
of all this exercise equipment.
7:29
It's really ridiculous.
7:30
The average person can do much better than I can.
7:33
So if they're like, oh, you'll burn 500 calories if you walk for an hour.
7:38
Okay, that sounds great.
7:39
I have no idea if that's correct.
7:40
I'm just throwing that number out there just for fun.
7:42
For me, I'd have to walk basically two hours to burn the 500 calories.
7:48
I'm just saying, meaning that my body doesn't respond the way the average person does.
7:53
How does your body respond?
7:55
But if we keep obsessing about the pounds lost or the calories burned,
7:59
yeah, we can celebrate that.
8:00
But what happens when we get behind?
8:03
Or we're not doing what the average is doing.
8:05
And we begin to beat up ourselves and we say, gosh darn it.
8:07
I'm just not good enough.
8:09
What's wrong with me?
8:10
To instead zero in on how you feel.
8:15
Like, wow, you actually wake up and you feel alive.
8:18
Maybe it's a stronger body.
8:20
Who cares that you're using five pound weights?
8:22
If you're getting stronger and you're seeing muscle definition
8:25
and your biceps and triceps, celebrate that.
8:29
You don't have to lift 30 pounds worth of stuff on each arm doing your bicep curls
8:35
or tricep pushes out, right?
8:37
I mean, if you want to do the basics,
8:39
you don't have to do that in order to make a difference in your body.
8:42
You have to do what's right for you.
8:44
Maybe it's even getting something as simple as better sleep.
8:47
How much would it mean to you to get solid sound sleep?
8:51
At least five to six hours.
8:53
You may stop to wake up depending upon your age.
8:55
You know, maybe you have to go to the bathroom
8:57
because you drank too much water, whatever it is.
8:59
But when you're focused shifts from a number to a state of being
9:05
You got more skin in the game.
9:07
You want to feel alive, right?
9:11
You're gaining what matters and losing what doesn't in the long run.
9:15
So look at your health as vitality, not just weight in a number.
9:21
Number two, choose one habit to master before adding more.
9:26
When you take the oath to yourself saying,
9:32
I'm going to do this.
9:36
And it's like your own hero and you're making this stuff up in your mind.
9:39
I'm not saying you're not a hero.
9:41
But we're sitting here trying to overhaul our entire life overnight.
9:46
Well, let me tell you this.
9:47
It's a surefire shortcut to burnout.
9:49
You're not going to make it.
9:51
You're going to fail more than you'll succeed.
9:54
So take a deep breath.
9:56
Pick the one habit that will move the needle the most.
9:59
What is that for you?
10:03
And honestly, just think of it.
10:06
If you're going to do that one habit for one month straight, that's it.
10:12
Maybe it's drinking more water.
10:13
That's a lot to do.
10:15
But let me tell you, that impact is so big.
10:19
Because when your cells are hydrated,
10:22
they can receive the nutrition that you're giving it.
10:24
You can be sitting here trying to feed your body good stuff.
10:27
But if your cells are dehydrated, they're like,
10:30
And so what does that good nutrition go?
10:32
It goes to storage.
10:37
Takes it into your glucose area.
10:39
And then you're like, oh, man,
10:42
Because you're not hydrated.
10:45
And honestly, most of us are walking around like that.
10:47
So maybe your one habit is drinking more water.
10:49
Maybe it's just walking, walking 15 minutes a day.
10:53
You know, maybe it's 10 minutes in the morning,
10:54
10 minutes at night or 10 minutes in the morning,
10:56
10 minutes in the afternoon, whatever it is.
10:58
Now, here's a big one.
11:00
I thought about this because, well,
11:02
let's just say I had a few sugary drinks,
11:03
not alcoholic drinks, but just sugary drinks,
11:07
Well, maybe you need to cut those out.
11:09
And you say, well, that's not a big deal.
11:11
It is if it was an old habit,
11:13
because you've introduced it back again.
11:15
And your mind has already gone to,
11:17
oh, I liked it when I could go in the refrigerator
11:19
and grab that cold can.
11:23
Now, you know how it is, right?
11:24
That carbonated drink that
11:26
fizzes when you just pop open the can and it just feels like,
11:31
and then all of a sudden you're like, oh, I feel so better.
11:34
I feel good. I feel connected.
11:36
And the next thing you know,
11:38
And the next day you're having two.
11:40
And the next day you're having three.
11:41
And the next day you're having two.
11:42
And pretty soon you're back into old habits,
11:44
which you dropped maybe two years ago.
11:46
But now, just because you had a hard holiday,
11:52
or it was just stressful,
11:53
or you were traveling, whatever it is,
11:55
it doesn't have to be hard.
11:56
But it was easy to grab onto again.
11:59
You know, it is hard to break old habits.
12:03
So you got to nail it with stubborn consistency.
12:05
So start with the one.
12:07
One habit, master the one.
12:10
And I would encourage you to do one a month.
12:12
Because if you did that,
12:14
guess how many new habits you would have
12:16
by the next time the ball drops.
12:20
In the new year, right?
12:21
You'd have 12 new habits.
12:23
That's pretty awesome.
12:24
And you might have more,
12:26
because if you can actually build it to be
12:29
to the point where they're automatic,
12:31
then you can layer on the next one.
12:33
So some of it might be easier, okay?
12:35
Maybe you had an old habit.
12:36
You went back into it,
12:37
but man, after two weeks like your spot on,
12:39
there's no problem.
12:41
Then you can layer on the next.
12:43
You see success builds momentum.
12:45
But remember success comes in little steps
12:47
with greater impact.
12:49
So take that small one step at a time,
12:51
that leads to miles of greatness
12:53
and choose the one habit.
12:57
Then finally, number three,
12:58
own your why every single day.
13:03
Why do you want health?
13:05
Have you ever really asked yourself that question
13:08
oh, I want to wear a size two,
13:10
but I'm going to size 10, okay?
13:12
I'm not talking that kind of look.
13:14
I'm talking about why do you want health?
13:17
Is it because you want to live a long,
13:22
And you want to be around not just for your kids,
13:23
but for your grandkids.
13:25
Maybe your career would actually do a little bit better.
13:28
I know that kind of sounds weird,
13:29
but maybe you need more energy.
13:32
Maybe you also need more confidence
13:33
and with good health,
13:35
you feel better about yourself.
13:37
So your confidence rises.
13:39
Maybe it's about your future.
13:42
How are you going to live in the next 20 years
13:44
and next 40 years of your life?
13:46
What does it look like?
13:50
front and center every single day.
13:53
Now, I know what has worked for me.
13:55
Now, you think about what works for you,
13:57
but put a reminder on your refrigerator.
13:59
Like wherever your hang-up is,
14:02
the trigger in your life,
14:04
put a reminder there.
14:07
Whether it's a picture of,
14:08
I was almost there,
14:09
but then I broke away and went back to my old habits.
14:13
no, I need to put up a picture
14:14
of that's what I want to look like.
14:17
I wouldn't use AI, though.
14:20
your mind is going to say,
14:23
And when something isn't real to you,
14:25
you're going to discount it.
14:27
You're going to be falling back into the self-sabotage
14:31
no, well, you know, it's not really real.
14:32
So it's okay, I can still do it.
14:34
If I fall short a week or two,
14:37
or maybe three or not,
14:39
yeah, no, you won't.
14:42
Use a real picture,
14:44
And maybe you don't like the way you look now,
14:46
but for you personally,
14:48
having a picture of what you look like now,
14:52
For some people, it's not.
14:53
But if it is for you,
14:54
then take that picture.
14:56
We have someone else take it for you.
14:59
It's going to look different.
15:00
I'm telling you it does.
15:02
There's different cameras on your phones and all of that.
15:04
Even if you take a picture of yourself in a mirror,
15:07
let me tell you mirrors are done differently.
15:09
Mirrors distort things.
15:12
And so did you know that when you go in dressing rooms,
15:15
back in the day when they had malls and all that,
15:17
they would have mirrors that actually,
15:19
when you look into them,
15:20
they make you look thinner.
15:24
and when you see that,
15:25
oh, I look good in this outfit,
15:28
and you put it on and you look in a mirror
15:29
that's like a real mirror,
15:32
what was I thinking?
15:33
Like, was it the lights?
15:34
No, it was the mirror.
15:36
Literally, it was the mirror.
15:38
So keep the reason front and center every single day.
15:42
When your why is bigger than your cravings
15:45
your hard work feels purposeful instead of painful.
15:50
And when you are on point,
15:52
and knowing that if I do this,
15:54
the pain is going to melt away,
15:57
slowly, it may take some time,
15:59
this isn't going to happen overnight.
16:01
You're not going to lose the weight.
16:02
It's not going to fall off,
16:03
because how long is it going to take you to get here?
16:05
And if you've been holding this weight for a long time,
16:07
let me tell you this,
16:08
your body will remember.
16:10
And so it's much easier to gain back the weight.
16:13
So it's important to look at this as a lifestyle.
16:17
the race you want to win isn't
16:19
against some external standard,
16:23
It's against the old habits that keep you stuck.
16:27
It's about gaining your health back in a way that,
16:30
well, sticks, right?
16:33
You want the sticky stuff to be the right stuff.
16:36
So the right race demands patience.
16:38
The right race demands persistence.
16:41
The right race demands a refusal to settle for good enough.
16:46
You were created on purpose for a purpose.
16:48
You were created for more.
16:50
And maybe for your life to change,
16:53
for things to happen,
16:55
for your dreams to unfold,
16:57
for your goals to actually come to fruition.
17:01
oh my gosh, it's not just about my earthly dreams,
17:03
but it's about my heavenly dreams.
17:05
Then this is the year.
17:08
Don't just write down a resolution.
17:10
Choose to win the right race.
17:12
Make every choice count
17:14
toward feeling fully alive,
17:16
no matter what the scale says.
17:19
Because now, I promise you, my friend,
