1:01
Well, how was last week for you?
1:05
First full week of January.
1:06
Now you're in your second full week of January about ready to branch off in the craziness
1:11
and can you believe it?
1:13
It's almost mid-January.
1:17
You know, I always remember my grandma saying, man, just time flies.
1:21
I can't get it to slow down.
1:23
The problem is there's been a rhythm to time since the very beginning.
1:27
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
1:30
From that point, He set time into motion.
1:35
The sun comes up and goes down.
1:37
The moon comes up and goes down.
1:39
We circle around, right?
1:42
And we see the stars come and go and all of the stuff of life that we live.
1:48
But yet somehow, we still want to control it.
1:54
What didn't work for you last week, seriously?
1:58
What do you wish you could have a do-over all over again?
2:02
I know I have a few of those.
2:04
Maybe you shared some words with a child or a spouse.
2:07
You're like, ah, if I could just take that back.
2:09
Oh, but once what it's out there, it's gone, right?
2:11
You can't change it.
2:13
But I do think we look at our lives and we think I can do this.
2:22
And yeah, it makes sense if you're going to school, right?
2:25
And you have to get a certain certification.
2:27
You have to take certain classes or if you want to go to med school or law school, right?
2:31
You have to go through certain things in order to get to that next step.
2:35
Those things, yes, you can control those.
2:38
But you can't control what God gives you or what God takes away.
2:44
You know, one of the most powerful moments of Jesus' life
2:48
when he was tested in the wilderness.
2:49
And you can find this in Matthew 4 verses 1 through 10.
2:52
We're talking about this today.
2:54
He faced raw human hunger.
2:56
The devil tempted him with a straightforward challenge.
3:00
Turn these stones into bread.
3:02
After all, Jesus is hungry after fasting for 40 days and 40 nights.
3:07
Of course you'd be hungry.
3:08
Have you ever done a 30-day fast or longer fast I have?
3:12
Non-actuality for me personally, I felt a lot better.
3:16
But that doesn't mean that there's not that hunger,
3:18
that desire of I want something of sustenance.
3:22
The desire immediate.
3:24
Yet Jesus' response cut deeper than physical need.
3:29
It is written, he said,
3:30
man shall not live on bread alone,
3:32
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
3:37
My friend, that reply is not just about hunger or sustenance.
3:41
It's not about just feeding your tummy.
3:43
It's a declaration about the source of true life.
3:47
You see, physical bread near sustenance will not sustain us fully.
3:51
We kind of think it does.
3:53
I mean, we can make homemade bread or go down to the bakery or worse.
3:58
We go into the grocery store and pull out some bread, right?
4:01
That's on the shelf.
4:02
That's not going to sustain us.
4:06
It's going to go, whether we excrete it,
4:09
whether we serve our body with more energy or whether we store it
4:16
You see, life itself draws from something higher,
4:22
And I've been really thinking about how I have been
4:26
paying attention to my Heavenly Father.
4:30
I have this desire to be in the word more.
4:34
I want to hear Him more.
4:38
And I'm not one that claims to be a pastor,
4:41
that claims to be a theologian.
4:42
I'm not any of those.
4:46
I'm a person who wants to have God's heart
4:50
and lead my life with God's heart.
4:52
His intention's not mine.
4:55
And there are moments I get it spot on,
4:57
and then there are many other moments that I fail.
5:01
And so I begin thinking and digging deeper.
5:03
I'm actually reading the Jewish Bible.
5:05
I'm reading the NIV, the King James.
5:07
There are many different versions.
5:10
Make sure that whatever Bible you're reading,
5:13
that it is actually translated appropriately.
5:16
There are Bibles out there, including online,
5:18
that are not the Bible.
5:20
They're changing them.
5:24
But what happens when we demand our own bread,
5:28
How often do we approach God like that temptation?
5:31
We come with our desires.
5:34
Hoping He'll just turn them into bread for us.
5:38
We ask for answers that fit our timetable
5:41
for blessings that suit our preferences
5:44
and for control over our circumstances that comfort us.
5:48
But living by bread alone is a hollow existence.
5:52
And it's easy to confuse God's promises with our own plans.
5:55
Oh, I know God wants me to do this.
5:57
It's my purpose here on life.
5:59
Okay, your purpose here on earth, for your life,
6:03
what does that really look like?
6:04
What does that mean?
6:05
How did that come to you?
6:07
I think we need to ask harder questions and dig deeper.
6:13
Because honestly, we want the quick fixes.
6:16
We want the drive through fast food answer.
6:20
We want the easy wins.
6:22
Or we want this sign, like strike me with lightning,
6:24
but not exactly, that confirm what we've already decided.
6:28
Like, yes, I got this.
6:30
Now, I'm not saying God doesn't leave breadcrumbs.
6:34
Right, this one thing I have always called God's Godwinks
6:39
is that they're breadcrumbs from heaven.
6:41
And if you're looking for them, you'll see them.
6:43
But it's not just because, oh, this is what I want.
6:46
And that's all you're looking for.
6:48
The breadcrumbs from heaven come in all shapes and sizes.
6:53
And it's in these moments where we get confused of what we want
6:57
and what God desires for us.
7:01
Where we ask him to say, well, wait, we want you to serve us
7:06
the way we want to be served.
7:08
Not what you want, Lord, which I know is going to grow and stretch us accordingly.
7:15
But what if we asked for God to give us the desires of his heart
7:21
and mean it genuinely?
7:23
Not just kind of be like, oh, you know, Lord, yeah, if it's your will,
7:27
I mean, that comes out a lot in prayers.
7:30
And I'm not saying don't say that.
7:31
I'm not saying that at all.
7:33
I'm challenging you to dig deeper because I'm challenging myself.
7:38
You see, God wants us to grow.
7:42
That's why He created us.
7:43
We are creators ourselves.
7:45
He wants us to learn.
7:47
He wants us to be stretched.
7:52
And we are created to create.
7:54
I mean, imagine flipping the script, asking God not to bless our own agenda,
8:00
but to birth His divine desires.
8:04
He places on our hearts.
8:06
I mean, now, I know it sounds risky, doesn't it?
8:11
Because you're like, well, I really want the $2 million power ball or whatever it is right now.
8:18
But yeah, I don't know that I'll really get it
8:24
because it's kind of quote unquote a gamble.
8:27
It's just kind of risky to go and spend $1,000 on that to up my, you know,
8:32
possibility of being able to win it all.
8:35
And it would change my life forever.
8:37
Yeah, but it's risky, isn't it?
8:41
But see, God wants us to risk our life with Him differently.
8:48
Not placing a gamble might go in and buy in a power ball.
8:53
But releasing our control and giving it to Him, meaning surrender.
9:00
And we don't like that.
9:03
Because honestly, we want control.
9:06
And that's a hard thing to do.
9:07
And to a degree, control is good, but not in the manner that we most of the time utilize it.
9:15
So, you know, this whole surrender, what does it mean?
9:18
It means stepping into uncertainty and being patient.
9:22
But it also means aligning yourself with the source of wisdom, right?
9:27
With God Himself, His purpose, His plans for your life,
9:32
and the peace that only He can give, not because you win the power ball,
9:37
not because you have a better job or a promotion, not because your kids are perfect.
9:47
And when we pursue God's desires, not just our hunger, life begins to shift.
9:52
Our decisions become less about control and more about trust.
9:57
Our actions grow out of faith, not fear.
10:02
Walk by faith, not by sight.
10:06
And our hopes align with His promises and our struggles gain meaning beyond temporary pain.
10:13
But a lot of times we're just trying to do it all by ourselves, our own strength,
10:17
our own control, our own knowledge.
10:19
We look to what somebody else has done and we think, oh, I can go do that too.
10:24
There are some things, yes, we can learn, but let me tell you everything that you need to know is in the Bible.
10:30
Breaking bread with God will change your life,
10:37
not crafting it out of control and trying to do everything out of your own strength.
10:44
So as the New Year unfolds, I want you to ask yourself this tough, essential question,
10:52
and it is, and it's when I'm asking it myself.
10:55
So I'm not asking you to do something that I'm not doing.
10:58
Will you break bread with God, spending time in His Word, resting in His promises,
11:05
and embracing His timing, and to what degree?
11:11
Or are you just going to try to make your own bread, forcing solutions out of desperation,
11:16
control, and frustration?
11:19
See, Jesus modeled something so rare, and you could even say revolutionary too.
11:25
In the wilderness there, despite hunger and hardship, He chose obedience over expedience.
11:35
God could do anything He wanted, right?
11:38
So could Jesus, right?
11:40
God the Father, God the Son, who's Jesus, God the Holy Spirit.
11:46
Jesus could have turned anything He wanted.
11:48
If He was hungry, He could have taken those stones and made them bread.
11:53
He didn't ever have to be hungry, but you see, there was something bigger there.
11:58
And later in Matthew 4, verse 10, Jesus says this, worship the Lord,
12:03
your God, and serve Him only.
12:08
That choice isn't about perfection, but commitment, dedication,
12:14
to trust God even when the easier path beckons.
12:19
I know there's temptations out there.
12:23
And Satan is so good at stringing us along.
12:29
And it's a spiritual battle we fight.
12:34
But one thing we can do to change the path that we're on
12:39
is knowing who we look to.
12:42
Like I said, I don't have all the answers.
12:45
This comes from my experience, me living out and trying to walk with God,
12:49
and letting Him be the leader of my life.
12:53
Creature now didn't come from me, it came from Him.
12:58
Because everything I do, I want to come from Him.
13:00
Creature now, it's being in step with God.
13:04
Walking with what Jesus did, and what He commands us to do,
13:10
knowing that the Holy Spirit resides within us, God is with us, Emmanuel.
13:18
Just because the holidays are over, don't forget who reigns.
13:23
But we have a tendency.
13:25
We put the Christmas tree away, and we also put God in a box.
13:31
And we're like, oh, this was great.
13:33
Now we don't say that, but our actions speak that.
13:37
We try to go back to the old ways.
13:40
I'm like, oh, this feels good.
13:42
I feel good about this decision.
13:48
I want to know, and more importantly, I want you to know, what are you truly hungry for?
13:54
Ask yourself some of these questions, as I've been doing with myself.
13:58
And let me tell you, I wrestle with them.
14:01
Have those hard conversations with God.
14:04
What desires drive the prayers you bring before God?
14:09
What are you asking for?
14:12
Is it only based out of what you think you should have?
14:16
Are they merely for comfort and security?
14:19
Or are they for the deeper calling God has placed on your life?
14:24
And where do you need clarity about your purpose, your decisions, even your faith,
14:32
what you really believe?
14:34
Proverbs 3, verses 5 through 6, trust in the Lord with all my heart,
14:39
and lean not into thine own understanding.
14:41
And all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
14:47
Most of the time, what are we doing?
14:50
We're holding God by our reigns.
14:53
And saying, take me here, Lord.
14:58
You're kind of putting it into Apple Maps or Google Maps going,
15:02
this is where I want to go right here.
15:05
Take me to this point, Lord.
15:08
Instead of saying, Lord, where do you want me to go?
15:16
I was sitting down doing some study, and as I told you before,
15:20
I'm reading the Jewish Bible in conjunction with the NIV and the King James,
15:25
and I go, and it's interesting.
15:28
It fascinates me, and I'm looking at some words going,
15:30
like, what does this mean?
15:32
I got to dig into it.
15:34
And it may be only a verse or two, and I dig in more.
15:39
But you see, God is revealing that my home is the home that I think I'm supposed to have.
15:47
And the word home here is being used as a greater word, not the house that you have.
15:53
It could mean that too.
15:56
But a lot of times, they're trying to create this home.
15:59
This is what I want to feel like.
16:01
This is what I want to look like.
16:02
This is who I want to be.
16:04
This is who I want to be known as in my community.
16:07
This is how I want my children to see me.
16:10
This is how I want my family to recognize how awesome I am.
16:16
But are you really giving what you're supposed to be giving
16:21
and surrendering all of yourself to God, which means your whole heart?
16:27
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart.
16:30
Don't give him just a piece or two.
16:32
Don't let him try to kind of fit in these nooks and crannies going,
16:35
okay, I'll give you this part, Lord, but I'm going to hold this here.
16:39
Because, well, I just don't trust you.
16:42
The home you're creating, it may be great.
16:49
But what if God's home is better?
16:52
Well, I'm here to remind you I guarantee you it is.
16:56
And it may not be what your earthly heart desires,
17:01
but let me tell you anything that God gives your heavenly heart will desire soon.
17:07
But you have to be willing.
17:09
Living by every word from God's mouth means more than memorizing scripture or reciting verses.
17:15
Yeah, that's good. I get it.
17:19
But there's more to that.
17:20
It means letting his truth sculpt your desires, shape your choices,
17:27
and to stain you when the stones of life look scarce and hard.
17:34
This year, my friend, break bread with God.
17:38
Let him feed your soul first and watch out every other hunger that you have,
17:44
that hunger for your home you're trying to create, it'll all fall into place.
17:50
Because you just don't need bread to live.
17:53
You need God's word to create your now and truly live.
17:58
Go in peace, be present, be incredible, be you.
18:04
I love you so very much. I cannot wait to see you on the other side,
18:07
blessing tags and lots of love. We'll talk to you real soon.
18:10
Have a glorious blessed week. Love you. Bye-bye.
