1:02
OK, so we're going to talk about health today.
1:05
I'm done talking about health.
1:07
Have you already given up on your New Year's resolutions?
1:09
Oh, wait, those are probably the same New Year's resolutions
1:11
you had like 10 years ago, 15 years ago, maybe 35 years ago.
1:16
We won't count how many years ago.
1:20
But I want to talk about things from a different perspective,
1:24
and we haven't talked a lot about food lately.
1:27
I'm kind of in the mood to eat.
1:34
But when it comes to healthy living, rarely does it feel easy.
1:38
We say we want to be healthier.
1:40
But when faced with salads that seem like lawn clippings,
1:43
I mean, let's be real.
1:44
Or bland, steamed vegetables, ug.
1:46
We ask ourselves, why does everything healthy taste so bad?
1:50
I mean, who wants to eat that?
1:52
There's nothing fun in that.
1:55
The frustration isn't just about flavor, though.
1:57
It's a symptom of a deeper battle
1:59
between what our body's crave and what our minds resist.
2:05
Interesting thought.
2:07
Why does everything healthy taste so bad?
2:11
I mean, because your taste buds and your body
2:13
are often on two different pages, aren't they?
2:15
And that disconnect chips up even the most committed.
2:18
You wonder why you fall off the wagon so easily.
2:22
It's because your mind says, ah, ah, there's something better
2:26
You put it in the cabinet.
2:28
Oh, wait, but if you just go over here
2:30
and you look down two more shelves and your refrigerator,
2:32
oh, and if you go in the freezer, oh, there's chocolate.
2:36
Lots of chocolate, right?
2:40
It's reality, right?
2:42
Because if we're going to get anywhere
2:44
when it comes to healthy living,
2:45
we've got to be honest with ourselves.
2:48
I have been working hard on my health.
2:51
But then what happens is life gets in the way.
2:53
You're like, how does that work?
2:54
I don't know what just does.
2:56
Things happen and I'm not on my own routine.
2:58
I have to answer to everybody else's routine.
3:00
And so then what happens to me?
3:03
My routine gets put on the back burner.
3:04
For a while, that's okay.
3:05
But then eventually, sniffles happen, right?
3:09
You get the cough and you're like, man,
3:10
I'm not taking care of myself.
3:12
Next thing you know, you're diagnosed with double pneumonia.
3:14
Now that was last year, a year ago.
3:17
I don't want to repeat that.
3:18
But you know what, this year I've been on the move again.
3:21
I've been, you know, all of the stuff, right?
3:26
Now some people would say, Christian,
3:28
You're in the deep South right now.
3:30
And you're in this frozen tender.
3:32
Yes, that's all true.
3:34
But I didn't get the sniffles and all of that
3:37
just because it's cold here.
3:40
I got it because, well, I'm around other things.
3:43
And I'm also not putting stuff in my body
3:45
that my body needs to stay healthy.
3:49
When we say healthy,
3:50
we're really talking about what our body needs to thrive.
3:54
The nutrients, the real fuel,
3:56
the balance, the harmony that comes within us,
4:00
not what we see in the mirror, not the number on the scale.
4:06
But what our brain wants is totally different.
4:10
It immediately tends to go searching for what?
4:13
Sugar, salt, fat, sugar, salt, fat.
4:16
Whatever trips you up, right?
4:19
That's what it's searched for.
4:19
It's a triple threat engineered by processed foods
4:23
It just pulls us and pulls us.
4:25
Yep, you know where you hide that stuff.
4:28
Because other people in your family eat it.
4:30
I have a huge family.
4:31
They don't all want to eat what I have to eat.
4:33
And my body's complicated, so is yours.
4:37
But we can't live in that excuse world.
4:41
My uncle recently had surgery.
4:45
He has troubles like I do.
4:47
My mom has troubles like I do.
4:50
There's some genetics in that.
4:54
And her brother has troubles.
4:55
So I've got two uncles that have problems.
4:57
And my grandmother had problems.
4:58
My great-grandmother had problems.
5:00
I'm like, this isn't fair.
5:02
I can sit here and yell at the tippy-tippy top of any mountain,
5:07
but it doesn't change what's happening in my body.
5:10
And at some point, we have to look at what our own body needs
5:14
from the inside out.
5:16
And that comes from our nutrition.
5:19
The fuel that we're putting in.
5:23
And when we sit there and we have one thing
5:26
that our body needs to thrive on,
5:28
which is the nutrients, the real fuel.
5:30
And then we have our brain that says,
5:31
oh, I want the sugar fat salt, sugar salt fat, whatever it is, right?
5:35
This clash makes healthy food feel like punishment.
5:41
No wonder we can't make it to the next level of healthy living.
5:46
No wonder we can't lose the pain and we gain three.
5:50
Why does this happen?
5:52
Because evolution wired us to survive scarcity.
5:58
Think about that for a minute.
6:01
When I was writing this, I was like, oh yeah, that's interesting.
6:08
We have, in our grocery stores,
6:12
the ease of getting whatever we want
6:14
unless if we're going to be in a frozen tendra
6:17
and then everybody sells out of everything.
6:18
But we'll leave that to another episode.
6:23
But we're meant to survive scarcity.
6:27
Not to sit there and go like, oh man, I can have the chips.
6:31
I can have chips and salsa all the time.
6:34
I don't have to wait to go to my favorite Mexican restaurant
6:39
I don't have to wait till single-day mayo
6:40
to have just fresh everything.
6:42
Oh no, I'm going to celebrate it every Friday
6:45
and I'm going to do it in style.
6:47
That's fine, there's nothing wrong with that.
6:48
But is that getting you to where you want to be
6:50
from the inside out when it comes to healthy living?
6:55
Sweet and salty triggers told our ancestors
6:58
where to find energy, dense food in the wild.
7:02
Today, those cravings run wild thanks to buffet
7:06
of hyper-processed options.
7:08
We're all shopping in the middle.
7:11
And not around the outside of the grocery store.
7:14
And not literally the outside.
7:15
Just if you go around, you've got the inner parts, right?
7:18
Where you've got all the aisles.
7:21
You want to shop the outer part of all those aisles
7:24
that are in the middle.
7:26
That's where the real food is.
7:28
It's too easy to go to those hyper-processed foods,
7:31
even in the frozen section.
7:34
Say, oh, but it's, oh yeah.
7:37
If it's not in its most original form,
7:41
And I know there's some degree, right?
7:43
We go when we get the fresh chicken,
7:44
but it's already been to the butcher.
7:45
I get that part, I got it.
7:48
But you still don't want to have it
7:49
where they've already put stuff in it.
7:53
You want to be able to dress your meat, your fruits,
7:57
your vegetables the way you want to,
7:58
so you know what's going in them.
8:01
Be careful where you're getting your stuff.
8:04
And that's where, meanwhile, nutrient-rich foods
8:06
often more subtle and taste.
8:09
Demand patients and resetting your palate, right?
8:11
A job none of us signed up for overnight.
8:17
We've got to reset our taste buds.
8:21
That is your kiss to keep a simple strategy.
8:23
Reset your taste buds.
8:25
And know what's not going to come easy
8:26
because if we choose differently,
8:30
there will be a greater hit to our health
8:32
where we resist the standards our bodies require
8:34
because facing that means discipline.
8:38
Just comfort and lots of sacrifice.
8:43
It means saying no to quick fixes.
8:45
And yes, the choices that don't deliver
8:47
instant gratification.
8:48
But what are we used to?
8:51
We want to drive through our fast food restaurant
8:56
Wouldn't it be nice?
8:58
I'm waiting for the day.
9:00
It's going to happen.
9:02
Were those little pens that they have now?
9:04
You know what I'm talking about?
9:05
I'm not going to mention them.
9:06
You know, they're all over.
9:07
They're like, oh, here, just stick to yourself.
9:09
Once a week, you're going to lose the weight.
9:11
Have you read the symptoms, the side effects?
9:16
Do you know the possibilities of what might happen?
9:20
Have you heard about the cases?
9:23
That's all I'm going to say.
9:24
And that's what I'm not going to mention it here.
9:25
But pretty soon, you're going to have
9:27
those fast food restaurants become those drive views
9:30
and say, just here, shoot me up right here.
9:32
I'm done drive through.
9:33
Next week, you come to the same thing.
9:35
Next week, you come to the same thing.
9:36
What are you doing to your body?
9:43
Because I'm not getting any younger.
9:46
We get to choose how healthy we are.
9:49
And this isn't a slap on your wrist.
9:51
This is a wake up to reality.
9:54
Not just for you, but for me too.
9:57
If you want to be around and live a lifestyle of vibrancy,
10:03
where you're energetic, where you get up going, yeah,
10:06
I get to do this instead of like, oh my goodness.
10:13
And it sounds like you've been smoking and drinking
10:17
And you haven't done any of that?
10:23
If you want to make a change, it takes a lot more work.
10:26
Reset your taste buds.
10:28
A lot of times we ignore our body's needs
10:30
because honoring them, questions are habits, our priorities,
10:34
and sometimes even our identity.
10:38
You want to go out with your friends, right?
10:39
You want to celebrate every single week, pizza night,
10:44
Let's have our chips and salsa.
10:46
I'm not saying that's a bad thing.
10:49
But let me tell you this.
10:53
When you're living your life in the manner of,
10:56
I'm just going to do what I want to do because I can.
11:00
But I'm here to remind you, there's hope.
11:03
There is good news.
11:04
Come on, get excited.
11:07
Healthy living can taste good.
11:10
It doesn't have to be the one where you snarl.
11:13
And you're like, now you may not be able to eat all
11:17
of the healthy foods for whatever reason.
11:18
Maybe you really don't like the taste of kale.
11:20
There's nothing wrong.
11:21
There's other great things out there you can eat.
11:24
All right, I'm going to tell you a secret.
11:27
And it's probably going to blow your mind.
11:29
I do not like peas.
11:34
I mean, they smushed in my mouth.
11:36
Yeah, just a thought of them.
11:38
Now, I can eat them crisp in a salad or in a casserole.
11:42
But quite honestly, I don't want them in my salad
11:45
because I like my salad as is.
11:48
And I really shouldn't like them in a casserole
11:51
because I shouldn't be eating casseroles, OK?
11:53
So both of those is like, I shouldn't have them anyway.
11:57
But guess what, there are many other green vegetables
11:59
out there that I can eat.
12:01
Don't sit there and say, I can't have green vegetables
12:03
because I can't eat peas.
12:07
And let me tell you, I've hid this secret from my children
12:10
all their entire growing up life.
12:12
My daughter even told me she goes, Mom, I had no idea.
12:16
You did not like peas, and she loves peas.
12:19
I'm like, yeah, it wasn't my decision
12:21
to tell your taste buds what to like or not like.
12:25
Just like I'm not telling my grandchildren.
12:28
Right now, they're infatuated with green beans.
12:31
I love that because grandma loves green beans.
12:34
Peas, they eat peas, but maybe not as easily.
12:37
They think it's fun to pick up, and then they
12:39
squish them in their hands, and maybe that's why I don't like them.
12:41
But regardless, I don't.
12:43
But you see, I don't use it as an excuse.
12:45
I don't use it as a crutch to say, I can't have green vegetables
12:51
Healthy living can taste good, not just in your mouth,
12:55
on your tongue, but it's in how it feels, right, in your body,
13:00
in your mind, and how you live your life.
13:03
So what does it look like in real life, right,
13:06
to reset your taste buds?
13:08
Well, number one, you have to reset your palate gradually.
13:12
I didn't say overnight.
13:14
Your taste buds adapt faster than you think.
13:17
So swap one process snack for a piece of fresh fruit,
13:21
or a handful of nuts each day.
13:23
For me, I love my chocolate.
13:26
So I have this special chocolate seriously I do.
13:29
And it's actually good for me, okay?
13:31
It's dark chocolate, but it's formulated.
13:33
It helps my cholesterol.
13:35
And I allow myself to have so many.
13:36
And so when I'm getting that craving
13:38
of I wanna go to the freezer that has stuff
13:41
that I should not be eating it,
13:42
I allow myself to have this little cute
13:45
less than one by one inch cube of chocolate.
13:48
It's just this little square.
13:52
Like, it's good for my body.
13:56
I'm changing a whole bowl full of something
13:58
that does no good for me.
14:01
For one little square that could change my life internally,
14:06
right, myself, over time.
14:10
And over weeks of you doing this,
14:12
flavors you once found bland, and have become vibrant.
14:17
Did you know celery tastes sweet?
14:20
Uh-huh, I challenge you.
14:21
Celery is very sweet tasting.
14:23
Carrots, oh my goodness.
14:26
They are delicious.
14:29
But some people will say, oh, there's nothing to them.
14:31
I gotta dip them in something.
14:33
You start taking out that processed food pretty soon.
14:35
You're like, oh, I don't need anything with carrots.
14:41
And then you start to crave the realness
14:44
instead of the artificial.
14:47
Oh, my friend, I could sit here forever
14:48
and tell you we have been programmed.
14:50
Programmed chemically to love processed foods.
14:58
I've read the research number one, but number two,
15:00
I've done the studies on myself.
15:03
Like, I've challenged my own body.
15:05
I'm my own research paper.
15:09
And I sit here and I take things away
15:10
and I add things to them like, oh, my goodness.
15:15
Why is it that chips taste better with Asoda?
15:18
Because they're chemically matched.
15:21
Why do you think soda companies own chip companies?
15:24
They're part of their, uh-huh, you're getting the idea,
15:28
We could go on and on and on and on.
15:31
So remove the artificial and crave the realness.
15:36
Reset your palate gradually.
15:39
Be patient with yourself.
15:40
Number two, connect food to feeling.
15:43
Don't just eat a salad because it's healthy, right?
15:46
Don't just eat those peas
15:47
because you have to eat those peas for me as green beans.
15:51
Notice the energy, the clarity,
15:53
or the calm it brings you afterward.
15:56
Maybe it's like, oh, my goodness.
15:58
I love the salad with the ginger dressing on it.
16:01
It just, oh, it's refreshing.
16:04
Capture that in your mind.
16:07
Not, oh, I need to have more, you know,
16:10
that creamy dressing in order to dip everything into
16:13
and I eat more dressing than I eat salad.
16:16
You know exactly what I'm talking about.
16:18
I'm not going to mention it because they're not a sponsor here
16:23
But when you link food with the benefit it provides,
16:26
that taste becomes a reward,
16:29
not the immediate sugary hit.
16:32
A lot of times we're chasing the wrong things.
16:36
Have yourselves chase the right things.
16:38
Connect food to feeling well.
16:43
And finally, number three, own your standards.
16:47
You're not on a diet.
16:48
Well, wait, let me say that again,
16:50
really loud and clear, you're not on a diet.
16:57
You're living a lifestyle.
17:00
Get that word diet out of your head
17:02
because right now in our day and age diet means you can't have.
17:07
So say this is my lifestyle, I get to.
17:13
I will feel good from the inside out.
17:15
And when I feel good from the inside out,
17:17
oh, by golly, I know I'm going to look good.
17:20
I don't care what that number on the scale is
17:22
because my body is going to do what it needs to do
17:24
because I'm giving it what it needs.
17:27
Get clear on what your body deserves and hold that line.
17:31
Don't let somebody else's life and routines take over.
17:38
I am now actually officially
17:39
toting everything with me.
17:41
I take my food with me everywhere I go.
17:43
If I go to a conference, I'm taking my food with me.
17:45
I go grocery shopping.
17:47
I don't eat what's there.
17:49
Now, there are a few things that I do allow myself.
17:51
The last conference I was at, I did allow myself.
17:53
But from this point forward, I can't
17:58
because I know what it does to me from the inside out.
18:02
And then I have to recover from that.
18:04
Is my recovery worth two weeks of me just feeling bleh?
18:09
There's no reason to feel bleh, right?
18:13
Healthy living tastes better when you're proud
18:15
of your commitment and results.
18:18
And it's not about the number.
18:21
Think about how yourselves are dancing on the inside.
18:24
Let it be a party every day.
18:28
Now, imagine what healthy tastes like in a bigger sense.
18:33
I want you to expand your horizon for a moment.
18:36
It's waking up energized.
18:39
It's wearing clothes that fit right, not stretched out.
18:43
It's feeling confident in your skin
18:45
and owning your day without hitting a wall at 2 p.m.
18:49
I gotta have this, I gotta have this.
18:50
No, you don't, because you feel good.
18:53
It's more than food.
18:55
It's peace of mind, resilience and freedom.
18:59
It's about honoring your mind, body and spirit.
19:04
That's the real flavor of health.
19:08
That's resetting your taste buds.
19:11
Sometimes bitter at first, yes,
19:13
but rich and rewarding
19:15
when you adjust your expectations and truly commit.
19:20
So next time you grimace over kale or maybe peas
19:24
or blanch at the thought of no sugar, ah, right?
19:27
Remember, it's not about instant taste.
19:31
It's about training your mind and body
19:33
for a delight that lasts a lifetime.
19:38
The taste of real health is waiting on the other side
19:41
of your discomfort.
19:43
Go in peace, train for life.
19:47
I love you so very much.
19:48
I cannot wait to see you on the other side.
19:50
Blessing's eggs and lots and lots of love.
19:52
We'll talk to you real soon.
19:53
Have a glorious, blessed, healthy day.
19:57
Feeling inspired and ready to train for life
19:59
and love your journey?
