48 - Porta Pia, Porta Nomentana and Aurelian Walls (eng)

The north-eastern edge of the Castro Pretorio district is marked by the path of the ancient Roman Aurelian Walls and opens onto the new Porta Pia, commissioned by Pope Pius 4th who asked Michelangelo to build it. Three centuries later the same gate will give its name to the famous breach that will change the destiny of Rome.
