49ers Strengthen Defense, Offense Still Needs Work

About this episode

The San Francisco Forty-Niners strengthened their defense in free agency, acquiring top interior pass rusher Osa Odighizuwa from Dallas. However, their offensive line weakened with the loss of starting left guard Spencer Burford to the Raiders. To contend for the Super Bowl, they need to draft a guard early and secure a new deal for star left tackle Trent Williams.

Welcome to NFL News Today. Two minutes of updates that matter to NFL fans, hit subscribe and stay connected. The San Francisco 49ers look stronger on paper more than a week into free agency. They've made smart moves to bolster key areas, but not every spot improved. Overall, the team upgraded their defense while the offense still has holes. The biggest win came on the defensive line. They traded a third round pick to Dallas for Tackle, OSA, Odiei Zua, who's locked in through 2028. He's a top interior past rusher, fresh off a 4-year 80 million dollar deal with the Cowboys. That move pairs nicely with Nick Bosa and first round pick Mikel Williams coming back from torn ACLs. Still, they lost Ed's rusher Bryce Huff to retirement, so they're eyeing a trade for Minnesota's Jonathan Greenard using maybe a second rounder. Meanwhile, the offensive line took a step back. They lost starting left guard Spencer Burford, a 25-year-old to the Raiders.

Instead of a real replacement, they added backups like Bret Toth at center and Viderian Low at Tackle. To contend for a Super Bowl, the 49ers must draft a guard early, maybe in round 1 or 2, and sort out a new deal for star left Tackle Trent. Williams, it's a critical fix before training camp.
