49ers Trade Down, Gain More Picks in NFL Draft

The San Francisco 49ers skipped the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night,

trading down twice from their 27th overall pick. Since their top targets got snatched earlier,

they first swapped the 27th pick with Miami for the 30th spot,

picking up the 90th selection in Round 3 while giving away. They're 138th in Round 4.

Then they dealt the 30th pick to the New York Jets for the 33rd overall,

and the 179th near the end of Round 5. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan both

called it a win, saying the players they wanted at those spots were still on the board after.

Lynch noted the Miami deal was prepped ahead of time while the Jets trade came together live on

draft night. They never considered jumping up because they only had six picks entering the

draft, so patients paid off with more ammo later. Now the 49ers hold the top spot in Friday's

second round at 58th overall, plus three fourth rounders over the final days giving them.
