They've been playing some good ball recently now. It doesn't matter because mathematically they are limited from the post season and hell, we mathematically eliminated

I'm just pumped for everything to get underway for Australia's first ever a regular season NFL game. I can't believe it. I love it. I love it. So give us some of that energy. Tell us if somebody had to describe you, how did the 49ers do this week in Melbourne? What did the city think of the San Francisco 49ers? I tell you what, in terms of the court of public opinion, the 49ers are through to the semis without dropping a cent. They have absolutely won over the entire city. This is a Rams game. Australia is supposed to be the Rams district. Look, they've put in work over the last few years with a few different trips and clinics and that sort of thing. But it's fair to say that everything that the 49ers have done over the last week has completely blown that out of the water. The

12:40enthusiasm that the players have shown, the fact that they've complemented the city, they've been out and about. They've done things the executives have been here. Given time to kids, there's a real feel that San Francisco, even though they weren't obligated to, decided to come out and give of themselves to Melbourne and Australia, whereas the thought is that even though the Rams are the home team, this is more of just a business trip for them. Zander, you mentioned that the Rams technically are the home team and we know that Sean McVay requested the 49ers because they didn't want the 49er faithful to take over Sofie Stadium in LA, but it sounds like the 49er faithful are taking over down under how much of a home field of advantage do you think this will be for the 49ers? If you was worried about the 75,000 seats so far, Stati, you better get ready for 100,049ers fans at the MCG to buy them all. Let me tell you about that. I think also something that might not have affected in is that there's a massive legacy fan base of the 49ers from the the Joe Montana days, the Jerry Rye stays. Australian to massive sporting fans and we've had

Let me tell you, it'll be, I think, I expect a pretty one-sided fan base, especially all the new tools that were going that maybe go for other teams or were undecided at the start of the week. They have really one over the hearts of everyone here in Australia and I tell you who else has. I don't know if you guys know about Grant Cohn. We do very well. Very well. Yes. He's unbelievable. He's an Australian football league panellist now. He's managed to get himself on all the shows next year. He's quite an April next year. He's played everyone on a break. He is a character. He's been very controversial over here. Grant is a dear friend. You won't believe this, Zander, but I'm old enough. Grant's father was a great journalist, a great writer here in San Francisco and then so Grant kind of launched his own thing and he started doing sort of the more of the YouTube videos as opposed

The Bonds is getting it from Grant. He's getting the full Grant Cohn treatment down there. Right. So Grant's come out and he started with the food reviews and everyone's gone, oh Grant loves fish and chips. He loves kebabs. He loves and all of a sudden he's killed the sacred cow, the Bont, who is basically considered one of the greatest players of the modern era who played a probably seven out of 10 to play off game the other day and Grant has just got a rope on him and he's been doing it on an every network in the country as well. You got to admire it. That's the Bont checked in on this by the way. He's been suspiciously silent. Grant's received a lot of messages of support from the players that he's gotten behind. So tell us given what you know of the travel, what's your opinion on the great Jetlag debate? Two very different approaches. The 49ers go for a whole week. The Rams knife in like burglars in the night. Who's doing it right? Yeah. First and foremost, I got to say for the the great American warriors that we always hear about in the NFL, I cannot believe the winging that has been going on about the 15 hour flight from San Francisco on LA guys come on. It's not that bad. You just have an extra beer on the flight. You sleep a little bit more and have a look at the pods that they've been in as well. The fully lie down seats. No, I think in saying that, you do need a few days to acclimatize 100%. Yeah, 17 hours difference in time zone. I mean, I understand that the Rams sport scientists and that have among the best in the world think that they can play on adrenaline and get themselves right. But I think in terms of what's going to happen tomorrow morning, Australia time, there's no doubt that the 49ers

17:56have set themselves up better to succeed in the next 24 hours. I mean, what happens in week two? I guess there's a debate that the 49ers might be off kilter when they come back to the states. But I mean, I think Carl Shanahan was saying the other day that he's been bolt up right with his eyes wide open in bed, all hours of the night until about yesterday or two days ago. So it took him that long to get himself right. And even some of your broadcasters have come over here and said that they haven't felt themselves until the last 24 to 48 hours as well. So you can soldier on, but in terms of being 100%, there's no way the LA Rams will be at 100% with the jet lag. Zander, big picture outlook. What is the current state of American football in Australia? Like how popular is it compared to other sports? Is it the most popular American sport? I know majorly baseball has been down there before. NBA is a global sport as well. How big of a brand is the NFL in Australia? And how much bigger do you think it will be after this game? The NFL brand in terms of fans watching the games is massive. It is huge. So the Super Bowl every year is on, you know,

18:58roughly eight o'clock in the morning, seven o'clock in the morning, Australia time. And it's among one of our highest rating sport programs for the year. People love it. Australians turn out for sporting events like a few other cultures in the world. And that's not just NFL. It's English Premier League. It's world cup. It's all these other sports. The NFL is definitely the biggest sport in Australia. It's grown exponentially in the last 10 to 15 years, I think. People don't play it. But the whole wave of punters that transition from Australian football over to college football and the NFL has really helped the growth of it as well. Like kids come through school now and they think, you know, I could go and play college football in America. That's a viable career path for me. But no, in terms of viewing, one, it's already massive. What this will do can't be overstated. This is massive for the fabric of our sporting culture. And the fact that there's a four year commitment as well, just means it's going to keep getting bigger and bigger. Oh, actually, I gotta be honest, I didn't know there's another one next year too.

20:01Well, thanks, I'm so dumb that in all my research for this game, I did not know. That's awesome. That's great knowledge there. So good to know that this is the next two teams get to have the great jet lag debate for sure. Just in terms of Australians, I don't know if you were able, what had the time worked out for you guys last night. But the Seahawks played the patriots in the opener and the punter for the patriots was Mitch Wyschnowski, our old buddy from Australia, who was a 49er punter. So the imprint goes on and the Eagles, of course, Jordan Milada, their offensive tackle is a non-punter zander. So there are actual position players too. Yeah, there's a few of the big boys of Pacific Island descent. They come across and they are big boys to be reckoned with. Jordan Milada, tell you what, he made a lot of headlines when he signed that $100 million three-year contract for the Philadelphia Eagles. That's mind-boggling kind of money. The AFL here, which by the way in Melbourne is a tribal sport. It goes courses

21:03through people's veins. We have 10 teams from the AFL that are based in Melbourne and it is in the middle of the playoffs and no one here could give us stuff about it this week. It is all about the NFL completely. But the salary cap for the AFL is about $20 million Australian for a season for an entire roster. So that's our most lucrative sport. You've got guys that come out here who are buddy back up long snappers that almost make the entire salary cap like it's mind-boggling for us. We're very grateful and in awe of the show that's come to town. It's so great. It's great to get your perspective, boots on the ground. Thanks for telling us, the 49ers did good. And of all the 49ers we thought would be the best ambassador. It's George Kittle. Did it bear out that way that he's the best personality? That is so funny. He say that because he has been the best. And I can't remember who it was. The guy that was asking how close Australia was to Antarctica. I'm sure he's been a great lawyer. Yeah. Yeah.

22:03I was pretty good. Brock Perty's impressed a lot of people with just being a pretty all-around good guy. But he's George Kittle has been funny. So George Kittle actually, if I've just got a bit of time here, is a famous rugby player based out of Sydney named Jai Arrow. And he was a superstar rugby player. But he got diagnosed with M&D or ALS I think is it's called in America. He's had to retire and all around Australia and sport across all the codes when people score a goal or a try, whatever they do. They do an arrow celebration to pay tribute to him. And unfortunately the disease is really getting grippy even quite quickly. And George Kittle learned to this. He reached out to him and everything like that. And he was planning on doing the arrow celebration, which had everyone in Australia so excited until Kittle found out that the NFL would find him $40,000 because it's a weapon. Oh man. We'll raise the money. We'll pass the hat. There's been offers of GoFundMe's and there's a lot of prominent Australian sport creators who

23:05have who have raged out and said, we'll pay the phone if you do it. So I would say, well, that's something to watch for tonight. That's something to watch for tonight. It's big news that he's playing. You know, he tore his Achilles on January 11. It's only been nine months. So it's it's his return has been credited in part to his indomitable spirit and personality for sure. So I see you guys have a favorite tight end to root for too. You've already had the game at SC and you're down Luke Weaver fumbles late in the third and you're down 21 17 maybe. I don't know belief becomes a thing right then. But Weaver leads you guys to a touchdown. You get a feel goal. You wind up win and tell me about that moment of truth when you kind of fall behind. There's a fumble and you're on the road and you're losing. Yeah, it's a great perspective. Normally that's the death sentence in football. You know,

27:08you get either stripsack for touchdown. I mean, that's so demoralizing. But it showed a little bit of our resolve and a great of our football team to bounce back on the road on a short week having to travel east. You know, loose time zones and I'll just proud of our guys that are guys. I just saw something in this team that got me excited for the rest of the team season that we got some tough kids with some some grit and it's encouraging for the rest of the season. Yeah, and coach, it seemed like one of the keys to the game was getting your defense off that field and did a great job over a Eastern Michigan last Friday. Third down numbers. Eastern Michigan was only three for 16 on the day. So how impressive was that for your defense to get the ball back for your offense in that fourth quarter? Well, it was awesome. You know, we had seven three and outs. I thought we did a really, really good job of stopping the run and making them one-handed. You know, we had a hard time obviously stopping the run against the Trojans, but you know, we recognize also that was a different animal. But I was encouraged to see us being able

28:10to, you know, stop the run and place out there and play really good defense. And like I said, give our offense a chance there then. And also, as you said, Luke was able to come through. You know, not only we get some stops, but we had some big, you know, drives there at the end of the game to fill the win. So that was a great team win. Talking to coach Ken Neumatolo, who of course, San Jose State gets the big win at Eastern Michigan 27-21. They come home one-on-one to face a California rival. Now it's an FCS school. Cal Poly, San Luis, but they're two and oh, is there a danger? Coach, Ken, in the, I don't know, looking past us in FCS school, they're two and oh, they're trying to go three and oh, they haven't beaten an FBS school since 2012, I believe. But where's where's the danger? How do you get your guys on cutting edge for Saturday at six o'clock? Well, there, there is definitely a danger because, you know, today's day and age, you know, guys are constantly on their phone, people are constantly on their phone and they beat things. But we also recognize there's a honesty and a humility on our group. Like, it's not like we're

29:13all-how-state or organic, anybody, you know what I mean? We're, we're a team just fighting for our identity and trying to make our own way. And so we recognize that we can't take anybody lightly for who we are. We got to come ready to play every every game, every snap, every quarter. I mean, we're not a program that can take anybody lightly. We just got to make sure we're ready to play ourselves. Coach, Ken, coming back home after two back-to-back row games, what did you learn from your team? What their ability to not only go down in battle against USC and show you some real life in that second half, but to go on the road to set up this home opener this weekend? Yes, like you said, I mean, I love the way our guys responded in the second half against USC, you know, the top 10 program. Some guys, we've got a lot of people got them ranked in the top 10 now. But our guys didn't quit and we battled in the second half. And then to carry that over, as we went on the road, I was concerned because in football is such a physical game and we had one less day to prepare and recover. And we had to travel across the country. So all of those factors

30:18and unfortunately we got a team bug doing that, you know, we got several guys sick, you know, so like, you know, over all those obstacles and some things that happened in the game, I was just proud of our guys that they fought. And so a lot of this, a lot of football, a lot of sports, I mean, not in life, you just, you know, there's going to be adversity and find a way to fight to it and really, really proud of our guys and let us show their character who they are. Because I believe in adversity, you know, you get to see people's true character. Do they complain, do they quit, do they soak, or they just keep fighting and I keep fighting. Good stuff. 31:19to see other players emerge and I'm looking at why receiver Cooper Hoke, six foot three kid at a coast of Mesa went to Corona Del Mar high school down there and the Newport Beach area. Five catches 115 had some big plays. What are we learning about this kid? Again, Cooper is another kid that, you know, he's a walk on. He came here. He's a guy that just constantly works. He doesn't, you know, he doesn't complain. Same thing I just said, he doesn't, you know, cry about where his situation was. He was a backup last year. But you can see every day, he came to work. And I think his process and the way he attacks his, you know, his work every day, his work ethic, his work habits have proven, you know, great results for him. And I could be more happy for a kid like that because he's such a great person, such a great kid. And the scene play like he's played and produce like he's produced has been really exciting for us. Like you said, Jabari played awesome. You know, Carson Clark is a guy that's coming to his own too. He's made a couple games now. He played really well. You know, two linebackers. I thought a two inside

32:23linebacker's not a badger sent. And Dylan Lee had really good games last week. And they were solid. And so like you said, as a season progresses, you see guys emerge. But a lot of guys that we sing are guys that have been doing well in camp. But you never know how guys are going to plan the lights. And so we're excited for Cooper. And like I said, you root for kids like him because he's such a great person. That's just a great story. I didn't know his walk on. He said two touchdowns in that game. And that's really, really cool. By the way, I neglected to mention, does everybody know that the San Jose State kickers last name is Sinatra? I mean, I'm a Frank Sinatra guy, coach. Can I'm like, I want to like blast. I don't know. We got to blast some Sinatra on every P.A.T. and field goal. We got to get and we got a lot of songs to choose from. So let's do that. All right. And when kids or guys are leaving the field, they recognize that one guy stayed on the field to walk through his pregame or his pre kicker team all by himself on the field. And I know our kids noticed it. You know, he just did it on his own. And so for to see him to kick the how he's kick right now, I know our guys have seen like, well, this guy's paid the price. He's mentally focused. He's a guy that's done everything. He can do the best kicker he can for us and super excited for all the things that Trajan's doing for us to Trajan Sinatra. But yeah, I did see some. I there was some at the place that I mentioned. Turned out they were like it's basically family and friends though. I think that it was like these people were there because they knew one of the players or no one of the players. But for the 49ers, man, it's from all over. It's people from the Bay Area. It's a lot of people here from Australia. And I think you're right. I mean, you know, for those players, if you saw all the press conferences they had, you know, those press conferences can turn a little bit quirky when

42:49when there's an international game. I thought they really handled themselves well. I mean, they hit all the right notes beginning with Kyle Shanahan on Monday when, you know, it was basically a 15 minute comedy routine for him. A lot of the player, you know, Dre Greenlaw with the great walkoff, you know, comedic touch with Antarctica and how close it is to Australia. I think that for years really did a good job of putting their best foot forward. And you know, they certainly gave the people of Australia, the city of Melbourne, a lot of praise, a lot of props, a lot of references to the great coffee and the great meals they've been having. So yeah, I think, you know, there's no question in my mind. You know, when you look at the 49ers, they've turned in Sofist Stadium and to Levi's South. Well, the MCG could very well be Levi's Southern hemisphere. Later today, your time

44:52stance because it is kind of if you're in Australia and if you're anywhere near where this game is being played and you don't obviously get a chance to see the NFL being played on an annual basis. This is the first time a regular season game has ever been played here. You're probably going to go out of your way even if you're a Steelers fan or whatever a Jets fan if there are any those out there and actually I have met some of those. So you're going to be able to, you're going to go to all those, you know, any game you can you can get a chance to see in person. And this is a gigantic arena. You know, it is 100,000 people. You'll see that that the 49ers and Rams will be playing on a little sliver on that field because of the cricket grounds and also the Australian rules football that field is gigantic. In football, Australian rules football, it's an oval or circular

45:53shape field. So there's going to be a lot of dead space between the sideline where the white line is and where the permanent stands begin, but it is very large and it's all seating and there's no bench seating. So it'll be interesting to see how the crowd is if it has any effect at all on how the operation goes as far as silent countering, anything like that. I'm thinking because the fans are so far removed from where the game is going to be played. Yeah, maybe that won't be necessary, but I would think that it will be very noticeably more red than blue when this game is played. Matt, moving on to the actual matchup and the X's and O's every time these two teams match up, we talk about the battle between Sean McVeigh and Kyle Shanahan. But how big of an X factor do you think Raheem Morris can be in this conversation with his background knowledge of Sean McVeigh's offense? I think he has to be because I don't know that the 49ers will be able to generate a pass rush

46:56with just the one-on-one guys they have out there. You know, Bosa, Nick Bosa says he feels great and he doesn't think there should be any restrictions on his playing time. You know, this is the guy that typically plays 80, 85 snaps a game or 85% of the snaps per game. But where else is that pass rush going to come from? You know, Ose de Gizua. He's never been a huge sack guy, like a double digit sack guy, but he's going to be a really important piece for this. But with Raheem Morris knowing the Raheem system so well and trying to scheme the saying up, you know, they're going to show probably some five-man lines. You're going to be dropping people. They're going to be bringing people. They're going to try to kind of create that split second confusion for the Raheem's pass protection to enable one of their guys to get home. And you know, it's not easy to rattle or get after Matthew Stafford because he gets the ball out so quickly, but that'll definitely be something to keep an eye on.

47:56It's just, you know, how often the 49ers bring pressure from where they're bringing pressure. And also, you know, little Matthew Stafford be able to get the ball out as quickly as he so often does. I mean, nobody in the NFL gets the ball out quicker than he does. So the 49ers pass rush is going to be under a lot of pressure. And as Nick Boas has said, a lot of the key to this for the 49ers will be stopping the run first and second down to set up third and long and make Stafford hold the ball and then try to get after him is best way they can. 48:58Nick Boas is clear. George Kittle is clear nine months after the ACL. It's all incredible or Achilles. It's all incredible news except for the Alfred Collins injury. So Matt, as much as this feels like the Super Bowl, they will return to week two. What are they going to do about this D line this year? Are moves going to be made? Well, yeah, moves will be made at 1 PM your time there 630 AM here or 6 AM here. They'll bring up a couple of guys from the practice squad. And also don't forget Sam O'Callano. I think they've lost three starters before the season starts. So although the injury report with Boas and Kittle and others is promising and don't forget Fred Warner makes his return too. It feels like he's already made that return because he was practicing at the very, very end of last season in the post season and would have played at the Fort Eris at somehow gone past the Seattle sea ox. But losing Ricky Pearceau, that hurts.

50:04Sam O'Callano who probably would have been a starter. That hurts. And then Alfred Collins, who I mean, let's face it, he struggled in the preseason. But the Fort Eris were hoping that just, you know, that big body of his, the more he played, the more he knocked the rust off and gained experience that he could turn into a really good player. And now you won't have that opportunity. And not only when he had that opportunity this year, coming back from that Patelor tendon injury is a very big deal. And it's, it's very difficult. And you know, for a guy like that who needs to bend his knees, who needs to play with leverage, it's just a really tough blow that, you know, probably not only affects this season, but will have a kind of a lasting impact for next year as well. Matt, one last quick question before we let you get to bed. The good news is that the 49ers offensive line will not be facing off against Aaron Donald in Australia. The bad news is I believe we still don't know who's going to be starting tonight at left guard. What do you expect to see?

51:04Are we going to see a platoon system throughout the game tonight? I think it'll be Connor Colby starting at left guard for the 49ers. I mean, he's the bigger known commodity started six games last year as a rookie. And yeah, I mean, that is definitely an issue. I mean, he came out of training camp or began training camp as a guy who's getting that first shot to be the starter. He did not lock that position down. He opened the door. First it was Robert Jones. Then it was Carver Willis. Then it was Austin Pleasants. And now it just kind of has sorted itself out in a way, at least temporarily, with Austin Pleasants going on IR, Robert Jones not playing well and getting released. And so it was basically Carver Willis, the rookie or Connor Colby. And I think it's going to be Colby. And they probably are going to play this by ear a little bit. Whereas if Colby struggles, then they will kind of make it of a platoon of

52:08two guys at that position. But I think they're hoping that Connor Colby can step in and build on what he did last year and just, you know, be a reliable player at that spot. Go to bed, Maddie.
