And Piers-Olaner Beersley reports France has its own presidential election in just seven months, and the far right there is currently leading in the polls. Writing on X, French Foreign Minister Jean-Werberot said the crushing victory of a neo-Nazi anti-European pro-Putin party in Germany illustrates the strength of the far right wave unfurling across Europe. He called the AFD's program, which includes making separate classrooms for migrant and handicapped children a betrayal of the European spirit and an exaltation of xenophobia. He called on Europeans to resist the banalization of extremist ideas, leftist politicians evoked parallels between Germany and France, but Marine Le Pen's National Rally Party was largely silent.
