Wednesday afternoon everybody and welcome to another live presentation of these
star and Dmitco show fresh off the Montreal Canadians running their winning
streak to six games in a row it was a season of high five in a row and you know
Marco good afternoon first and foremost how's it going today what day is it I'm
losing track but I think they're doing great how about you guys yeah the day's
just a blend into one lately no doubt right I don't know about you you know I
think one of the questions that's probably going to linger throughout the
course of the next 58 to 60 minutes here between you and I was that the most
impressive win of the Montreal Canadian season was that their biggest win of the
season I don't know if it was their biggest win of the season I think I go back
to the Ottawa game the three two win there I look at the Columbus 21 win
considering the context of how hot they were but I will say this brother that
was the most impressive effort from top to bottom if you're looking for an
appetizer before the main course that is the playoffs I thought the Montreal
Canadians Marco delivered and delivered in a massive way in Tampa Bay last night
your thoughts on all of that yeah I mean I think it starts right off the
battle with goal tending I think Jakob Dolbech played extremely well and that's
been the that's been the theme of it for the last six or seven games is the
play of the goal tending has been very good one of the things I will say though
the Canadians yesterday it was fire with fire like Basilepski played a
phenomenal game like it was goalie versus goalie which we haven't really seen
of late right like the Canadians have been a very opportunistic team which is
it's a skill like I'm not discounting them for it but oftentimes it's the
Canadians with 17 shots in the opposition with 40 and the Canadians come up
with a 3-1 victory you know what I'm saying so it was refreshing to see them
have to get frustrated a little bit by goal tender consistently robbing them
chance after chance but it spoke to their ability to create offense on the
rush even though you know you can say that they had a better much better start
this time around than they did last time or a couple of games before I want to
get into this thank you so much John we love you for that I want to get
Marcos take on the now what I thought was in a word to look in bullet area to
to encapsulate Keith Pelley and his press conference from Tuesday I thought it
was borderline disastrous I want to talk about that with Marco as the show
moves on as Darren Dregor told us on TSN 690 right after Marco Domingo left the
air Marco is on with Connor and I every Wednesday at 805 to serve up a nice
play to have breakfast together and Darren Dregor had mentioned that the
organizations that Keith Pelley had mentioned in Buffalo and Montreal that he
never saw that train coming and that Buffalo and Montreal took exception to
their organizations being dropped you want to talk about it now go ahead
absolutely Sean that's Chuchu bananas yeah Chuchu mother yeah okay well maybe
maybe maybe you bring it down I didn't go the whole way you know keep it
but obviously for those that aren't aware you know I can't speak to whether
the Canadians have mentioned anything to the league I can't I don't have that
information but I want to tell you is I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest
because can't use has had his hands slapped by the league for daring to
mention even just one player that plays for another team during his press
conferences and that's not something you're allowed to do right and meanwhile
you have you know you have Pelley basically naming he named Michael Hage yes but
then after that in the scrubs well what's he called down Hagey Hagey Michael
he named yeah he named every single player under the age of 22 for the
Montreal Canadians you know so like you know and he did the same thing for Buffalo
so I just want to put it out there it's not a thing but yeah it's definitely a
bad look like the teams are pissed because why why you know speaking as
them why are you talking about our players right talking about your players you
have you have bigger problems than Buffalo never thought I'd say that you have
bigger problems than Buffalo and you have bigger much much bigger problems than
Montreal but again you know I I enjoyed the transparency which is rare in this
league usually everything is all as generic in these things but for him to say
you know they want they don't want to rebuild which is kind of funny for me
because I always be like what but in the reality they can't the leaves cannot
rebuild two of their next three first round picks don't even belong to them
they've traded them away right so either they keep their 2026 pick then they
lose 2027 and 2028 or they lose 2026 and 2027 and they keep 2028 or they
lose 2026 and 2028 and keep 2027 regardless can't do a rebuild and finish
in the bottom if you're not there to draft it or else it just becomes a
question it becomes the same situation that the leaves went into you know in
the 2009-2010-2011 when they traded two first round picks in advance the
Boston Brews for Phil Kessel finished second to last gave a second
overall pick to Boston they drafted Tyler Sege and then the following year
finished ninth to last and with that pick the Boston Brewins drafted Duggy
Hamilton you don't want to do that so what are your options options are a
retool and that means in my estimation I don't know how they could perform a
successful retool considering how thin the unrestricted free agency market is
into it this summer I don't know how Toronto can do that without trading one of
nice knee-lander or Matthews as the Montreal Canadiens pick up their six with a
six win in a row we can resurface and circle back on on Toronto but in the
here and now is the special night for Haps Nation as you know they took care
of basically Marco like we can talk about the Atlantic Division and everything
else but for a long time the Tampa Bay Lightning are the gold standard they're
the team organizations like Montreal like Buffalo like Ottawa like Detroit they
aspire to be like them one day to have that reign to win multiple Stanley
Cups to be again to repeat myself the gold standard I'm not saying we're seeing
a changing of the guard still full respect to the Tampa Bay Lightning but what
about that approach what did you like from the Montreal Canadiens who took that
playoff type intensity played a tight game all around what made the Montreal
Canadiens go toe-to-toe whether it was in game or after whistles with the
Tampa Bay Lightning what did you take away from that well one of the things I
definitely appreciated was how much more aggressive they were in the defensive
zone right like Kaden Gouli played another phenomenal game in my opinion I had
you know outside of a couple of giveaways I thought Arbor Jack I played a very
reasonable game I thought Jaden Strubel played a good physical game so when
everybody's kind of pushing in the same direction that's a fantastic outcome
that's exactly what you want but they played tighter in front of the net you
were the opportunities and the one time it did happen I believe that there was
definitely a holding call on Gonzales on Noah Dobson but few opportunities
did the Canadiens give to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the high-danger areas they
were always pushed to the exterior and that is something that we've been
talking about for a long long time so I really enjoyed how they started from
the defensive side but I don't think the Canadiens were opportunistic this time
around they were robbed many times last night by Andreye Vassalowski who was
standing on his head for most of that game so kudos to him and keeping his team
in it clearly like again that team's not at a hundred percent Kuchara just
came back was a game time decision so you know he's not a hundred headman is not
there he's a number one defenseman so you have to be mindful that you were
employing the final form of the Tampa Bay Lightning that being said it's how
they played the Tampa Bay Lightning that keeps that makes me it's not the result
I mean obviously the win is is the positive and it's a sixth win in a row
that's what you want results matter it's a results driven league but if you're
projecting this may very well be the first round of the next of the playoffs
for the Montreal Canadiens right yep if you're projecting that's right and like
the way they brought it to them they didn't back down they were physical the
forecheck was heavy and they were really good in puck cooperation in their own
zone there were times of course where Tampa Bay took over a little bit in the
offensive zone swings like that are gonna happen but no one really overly
panicked and as long as they keep it simple and they keep putting pucks out
it's exactly what you need in the defensive side of the puck to be able to
counter a team like Tampa who you know you may not realize it not a very big
team let's put this comment on the board here because again you know Jacob
Dobish had another outstanding performance another three goals save above
expected Marco but let's let's put some numbers on the table right the
Canadiens have a 9.33 say percentage since facing Boston we go back to St. Patrick's
Day right and we look at overall and yes the Canadiens have been giving up
shots no doubt but they're basically at 50% in expected goals percentage and
high dangers scoring opportunities according to stats delivered by natural
statric and they still have outscored their opponents 18 to 7 so maybe to your
point as we fall back on those numbers yes the volume of shots but they're not
all created equally at 50% I mean this speaks to I guess what you talk about in
terms of the team defense and how better structured they seem to be because
throughout the course of the season Marco was it not fair to say there was a lot
of talk and maybe some worry from a percentage of the fan base about the
system that Marta Saint-Louis and his players were playing under for the
majority of the season I think one of the I think the Canadiens were very
opportunistic I would say since the Olympic break yeah they've been very
opportunistic haven't really gone into high volume shooting situations but I've
taken advantage of scoring chances would need to be do I think that their
scoring will be sustainable in the playoffs I don't but what I think will be
sustainable is what they're developing right now which is more of this team
defense overall aggressive persona that this the identity of this team is
slowly developing into and I think that in a playoff setting is far more
important than assuming that they're gonna run up the scores six you know five or
six goals a game that's not gonna happen on average could you could
obviously have a blow out here there it's anything could happen in the playoffs
I guess but in terms of and you know I know my mom's gonna be watching this
is her favorite expression but in terms of transferable skills that we're
seeing in this late season that you can a hundred percent carry over into the
playoffs that heavy forecheck and that aggressive play along the boards in the
defensive zone are two very notable changes that we've seen over the last five
weeks that I think will be very conducive to helping Montreal not only be
performance in the playoffs but win around and you know you can make the
argument that the east is wide open and this and that there is only one
element that I really just want to touch on and then we can move to something
else yeah don't assume that the teams that you see before you or in the
standings are what they are because of what they are in the regular season
some teams are better playoff teams than regular season teams because you
have to remember this schedule has been bonkers bonkers so much so that the
playoff schedule that's right playoffs going is going to be less condensed than
the regular season and so some of those older teams that have really felt it
like Tampa Bay the amount of the amount of injuries they've had this season
in players that have left the team has been insane you look at a team like
Boston a lot of veterans there Boston I'm really I'm just it's coming out of
me hard here those guys those teams I feel like are going to be the teams
they're going to elevate in the playoffs because they have that older
experienced core and I just want to remind everybody that is a completely
different style of hockey in the playoffs and that you can't simply just
juxtapose success especially in a six to ten game window in the
regular season directly on to the playoffs I believe the answer to this
question maybe Marco could be more accurate I thought it was seven with the
little sorry set what do you mean in terms of magical number in your case
then when you say seven seven points seven points to get them to lock them
in right I was going to go with the combination of four wins and losses right so
basically it's a eight point spread right right right I like to round my
number so I get it but seven is the number with the what three ninth place
teams Ottawa loses Columbus loses last night
we don't have meatloaf in the Demiko household we we have the song it the Florida
Panthers you know went into that game and left that game is the most penalized
team in the national hockey league and coincidentally I guess you could take
that penalties when you have the third best pk unit in the national hockey
league and and just I guess to fall back on what you talk about in terms of
sustainability as we're talking about a matchup that featured two of the highest
scoring teams in the national hockey league matching up last night in Tampa Bay
but it was the Montreal Canadiens who scored on the power play not the Tampa Bay
Lightning who went over for four and to fall back I guess on that commentary the
goals the Canadian score now granted they scored two empty netters Matheson and
Nick Suzuki shout out to Mike Matheson who crosses the 300 point career threshold
with his goal so does coffee old so does coffee old 47 goals I mean we're done with
Mr. Saturday night he's Mr. every night these days which by the way reminds you
that was the 27th go ahead goal of his season he's got Pavel Murray and he's
not gonna catch Brett Hall there's not enough games to catch Brett Hall but he
should pass Pavel Murray if he continues on this trend we just talk about how
funny it was to finally see Cole coffee on the ice at six on five yes and that
and what happened on that six on five yeah this is you key starts at three on one
the other way yeah and does it pass it the coffee old and takes it all the way
in scores yeah I um I'd love to know what caught the light when they when they
embraced after my head was like I bet you went nice pass good pass yeah thank you
you know yeah well if you're Nick you'd be like how many passes have I made you
over the last yeah how many assists does Nick Suzuki have on the 300 points
that go coffee yeah how many how many how many of those 300 points is Nick
Suzuki factor in on next episode we'll figure that out and we'll bring it to you
but the new captain serious in the NHL he took the easy play he took the
guarantee play and put it into the empty net for the money yeah get the W
I like I get it I really get it we're getting around and ironically enough was
any those two weren't even the best players on their line last night yeah you're
I slipkowski the more I watch him play yeah the more I strongly and most
directly believe that he will become one of the premier power for it's in this
league you know in the same vein as Brady could chuck in the same vein as as
Amiko Ranton and though like he is there yeah he is so close and I feel like it's
almost discounting his season to say that second half slough versus first half
slough but if you didn't have that five to ten game speed bump at the beginning
of the season we'd be talking about a point per game power forward yeah that's
bonkers it is members remember when everybody said at the draft maybe second
line winger and now he was like a first line power for it it's crazy when it
comes to projections and sometimes you get it and sometimes you don't and it's
not lost on me either right and slough just turned 22 a couple of days ago
right all of our captains on 22 goals Jacob Dolbech most wins for a rookie
gold tender this season I've been demied off leading rookie in in points in
the national hockey league like yeah I mean to go back to you know what the
opening moments Chuchu Keith Pelley here comes the Montreal Canadians train how did
you not the Montreal Canadians coming bro they weren't even aware in turn their
own observations internally they just assumed they just assumed they were
going to be as good and picked up as many points this year as the as the one
that got got them into the playoffs last year they don't see Buffalo they don't see
Toronto this is this is who's in charge this is who's spearheading the new
direction of the Toronto Maple Leafs yikes you know what I've since the day I was
born I was glad to be a half fan I you know my hat goes off to you Maple Leaf
fan I do believe the playoffs are ever are always better when Toronto and
Montreal and Boston are in the mix but yeah that was disastrous yesterday no
doubt man this is a fantastic question yeah Samuel Garniel asks anyone scared the
second line is gonna get crunched during playoff hockey I don't know about
crunched yeah I'm not so concerned I don't know about crunch I don't know
that they're gonna be physically outplay because first of all Alex New York maybe
five eleven but that guy is basically a cube he's like five eleven two oh nine
like every two of you know and I was gonna get to Demi in a sec but I just
Alex New York not necessarily a guy you're just gonna toss off toss off the the
puck not yeah not his style um but then you look at the way that Demi
Dove is playing like Demi Dove against Kucherov was like a thing like they
were constantly being matched up because John Cooper had the last change and I
just the the if you juxtapose the styles Demi Dove seems like such a more
gritty player already in the way that he played obviously I'm taking
nothing from Kucherov I mean the guy's gonna score 130 points this year for
love god one of the best Russians if not the best overall Russian of all
time once it's said and done once the points race is over he may very well
eclipse Ovechkin but the way in which Demi Dove plays man I said it before he'll
run into the he'll run into the corners you think he was a third line grinder
yeah and then the skills come out and you're like oh my god this may be one of
the most layered future superstars that we've seen in a long time right that
you know wasn't a first overall pick say like you know how you look at
Celebrini and you're like yeah well I feel like that's exactly like and as I'm
talking about last year obviously Celebrini took up monster monster jump and
Celebrini is a better prospect in my opinion and I don't think that's a hot
take yeah to see the way that Demi Dove is playing right now I think Demi Dove is
playing to the same level in terms of offensive production and in terms of
offensive zone puck recuperation as if someone likes Celebrini where I think
the difference is is that Celebrini is a stupendously more dependable defensive
player and a center and again probably trending to be the crossby of this
generation but let us go backwards can Demi Dove be the Cucherov of this
generation upcoming and I think that's what's interesting right because think
about it Sean what was Cucherov doing at 19 20 years old yeah right we yeah
he was playing in the QMJ HL that's right and even then his 20 to 21 year he
started in Syracuse and only then got called up in the 2013 2014 season so
Demi Dove already ahead can be very interesting because there was a huge
developmental curve when it came to Cucherov between the ages of 20 22 and
25 that's really where he went from like to like 65 points to like that's
right and I feel like that's exactly the window for someone like Demi Dove but
a little earlier because he's starting earlier and that is a very interesting
proposition because when Cucherov began there was already kind of like Demi Dove
right now there's already kind of a totem pole think about it right
Stamcoos was already ahead of him on the totem pole and and and then he came
in on that second line the the triplets line as we remember it with with
Johnson and Palat and those guys were buzzing they were great I really enjoyed
watching them in the playoffs against Montreal in 2014 and then they just took
off well I feel like Demi Dove you're starting to see the sparks of a superstar
because he's able to adapt to whatever the game requires him to play that it be
going into the corner and getting his nose dirty that it be trying to decadentment
out of his pants on the rush that it be trying to intercept the play in the
neutral zone and being hard on the forecheck his adaptability and his hockey
cue to me I again I just continue to to the horn I see a superstar in the
making and to finish off the thought you know we talked about toughness I forget
who who asked the question about you know anyone worried about the Canadian's
line getting smacked around come playoff time and everything you know what
always goes through my mind when when that's proposed and listen I'm a big
proponent of size and physicality too but the one thing that makes me
confident that that's not going to be an overwhelming factor in determining
why the Canadians hypothetically lose if they play Tampa Bay or if they play
Buffalo let's say in the first round of the playoffs coming up right you know
and Jeff Gordon had mentioned this last summer in the after-math of them losing
to Washington yes they wanted they want tougher players but it it there's no
direct correlation to toughness and size and to Mark was point about the way
Alex Newhook plays you watch Oliver Capin in whose situationally very smart
you know put himself in these positions Ivan Demidov will take on contact
will go through contact will battle hard along the boards will use his God-given
talent of his handwork to manipulate in a one-on-one battle along the
half wall those are tough examples that I'm highlighting right so it's not
just you know North South player that's gonna grind you into the ground and
catch you with your head down it's like grind these guys and they're for
checking get ready for a battle they don't shy away from it and that is also I
think a component of toughness so I don't think that's the case and I don't
disagree with your take and I'd I raise you one more yep the combativeness of
the bottom six in the offensive zone of late I want to get to that yes then take
it away Shawnee Joe Valeno Jake Evans Jake Evans and Joe Valeno have really
Marco stood out in in big ways and especially situationally when it comes to
being shorthanded they've created a couple of different odd man rushes down a
man don't convert but Joe Valeno is squeezing every bit of juice out of every
minute he's been given and Martins Saint Louis talked about trust that's a big
thing for this coach he wants to be able to put a guy over on the ice and he
wants to be able to trust them and and this comedy here is nails it team
toughness and team toughness is led by example and Joe Valeno is forcing his
way to not come out of the lineup when the Montreal can if and when this team
gets healthy enough I mean this again has been another interesting talking point
for you and I for most of the season we're starting to see this team add that
component on a consistent basis now trending but upwards upwards I've talked
about this Joe Valeno's ability to be on the sidelines for basically a month
and a half and then just come back in and be an excellent role player for this
team like the only thing you could ask more from Joe Valeno is being able to
you know to to convert on all the two on ones and odd man's situations that
he consistently creates from his effort from his speed from his physicality
like again you know just blue collar lunch pale style hockey where he's keeping
it simple he's doing the basics that he needs to do he's doing it well and then
I think I wouldn't say indispensable but I think you can make a very I think you
can make a legitimate argument right now that he's giving you equal to if not
better output then feel to know well he the thing is Marco like yes he doesn't
score goals but I think maybe more importantly if I could say that without being
laughed out of the room because goals are everything he plays a need he
fulfills a needed role to me and that is extremely important to round this team
out well look at the Canadian's penalty kill of late like actually starting to
turn around and it's not by chance I'm not obviously going to say that it's
because of Joe Valeno like I understand but it's Joe Valeno exemplifies the
change that we've seen on the defensive side of the puck where they're more
aggressive the utilizing their speed they're not getting walked they're making
it difficult to play in their zone they're not being passive to the puck
carriers going around their zone this is what we've been asking for if you're
going to play a hybrid man-to-man situation when you get a hold of your man
finish the check right or get ahead of him or be on top of him or you know hook
well I'm gonna not hook but like tie up the player that's how you execute that
kind of a system so as I've said before and Martin saying who you said it
before it's not a system issue it's how you how they've applied that system
and I feel like they've taken the next step to to be able to play that kind of
style but Sean we've been saying it from the get go to play a hybrid man-to-man
system you have to be on top of your man you can't be passive and play a man-to-man
you it doesn't you if you're going to be passive it's zone defense if you're
gonna be aggressive it's man-to-man there's no one between I'll put this
comment up here you touched on field in O's name and I guess long-time viewer
and loyal supporter the Rod Langway fan club hopefully Ryerson can include
Rod Langway and is over the top generosity on the on the regular basis we love
Ryerson for just spreading the word of star and Demiko
Rod's takeaway field in O's just too slow he doesn't win enough races to make
a difference to many cases and I wonder about you know Brendan Gallagher over
eight minutes yesterday field in O I wonder about you know every good
organization I think surrounds itself or should in my opinion Marco with
different voices that not everybody's a yes man maybe as it was in previous
organizations or previous regimes right that maybe there is a difference of
opinion Marco a dialogue that that we're not aware of I'm not asking you to
speculate on that but wondering about are there better roles are they waiting for
other players are they thinking about Michael Hagen is future this year with
Montreal Canadians about you know is this team deep enough on its bottom six to
be a tough out come playoff time we bring up field to know we bring up
Brendan Gallagher's name with the injuries obviously to a guy like Kirby
Doc and Alex Texier being at the forefront I think they're deep enough I just
don't I I don't think they have enough diversity of persona right I think is
the thing right you can have enough NHL bodies but is it what you need in that
bottom six and I think for those that perhaps want to understand where I'm
coming from go ahead Jake Evans filled to know very similar hockey players
right one's a righty one's a lefty right okay Alex Texier Kirby Doc
Zach Budzick you know middle six wingers right one of them has a more of a
physical edge in in Budzick but Josh Anderson the reason why Josh Anderson is
appreciated he's a crash in Bangai that fights and it could chip in some goals
from time to time as long as he's not on a breakaway so you appreciate that
obviously the leadership and then Brendan Gallagher is appreciated because of his
motor and and what he's done who is the kind of player that the Canadians would
have on the roster that would be similar to say the way the Corey Perry plays
the game today or similar to the way that we've seen a guy like AJ
Greer play for the Florida Panthers yeah they don't have that no that's what
I'm talking about I get it difference in personas right yeah and I think
eventually they're going to have to move that that to me is what I think is
going to open up the Canadian Stanley Cup window when their bottom six becomes
very identifiable and to the point where anybody in their bottom six can jump
up into the top six in the in the face of an injury whereas right now Budzick
knock on wood seems to be the only one that I would think of that's healthy that
I would be willing to put into the top six in case of injury right I don't
know that I would do that with Anderson I don't know that I would do that with
Gallagher etc etc well I think Florian to be in a top six situation in
Montreal I think Florian needs to be in a top six situation in Laplace first
we'll get there but I think in terms of that bottom six crash and banger you're
spot on if that's what it was meant for that's exactly what they're looking for
right is those personas that's why you draft the Copiniacus that's why you
draft the Tyler Thorpe that's why you draft the Logan Sorcerer that's why
you you know and eventually those players are going to be the combination of
both skill and size fill out your bottom six and then you're off to the
races because then the secondary scoring will come but then that bottom six will
have a better adaptability to the game in front of them because if it's a
rope adope you know north-south game they can adapt if it's an east-west trench
war they can adapt and then the top six will continue to do their thing the
same applies on defense you know the third pair I feel eventually will be
upgraded be it internally with the development of angstrom and Rynebacker or
elsewhere but I feel like the Canadians are slowly getting there they're
slowly identifying the pieces that they want to place in those eventual roles
because I think this summer they're going to be a little bit more aggressive
and filling out their depth as opposed to filling out their core as we've seen
in the past well it's going to be fascinating you know I think it's something
that obviously we're going to tackle you know as you know the playoffs arrive
and the offseason be you know gets into full bloom about you know what happened
to the Canadians in the playoffs obviously you know we don't have a crystal ball
so we have no idea right does a loss change things does a win of a first round
opponent change things for management in terms of who they're who they're
targeting do they stay on course I'm very fascinated I know Mark was I'm very
fascinated by what this summer has in store so make sure you like and subscribe
to the star and debiko show for continuing coverage and depth analysis the
occasional laugh as best we can right here on youtube.com and wherever you get
your audio podcast platforms and I get the element you know you see some
reactions online from the you know the passionate fanbase you know the
Montreal Canadians by and large have an extremely high hockey IQ fanbase and I do
get the angle you know I lived through it when I was a boy I saw goal tenders
do incredible things fans of a newer generation perhaps watch the
arousal of Halak maybe they watched Kerry Price and Shay Weber in their
incredible run during the COVID bubble year where they went to the Stanley Cup
final and lost the lightning in five games like we've seen unbelievable
performances perhaps defy some odds what we're seeing from Jakob Dobos today is
obviously out of this world first star of the week the guys electrifying he's
playing with extreme confidence I believe maybe not to the level Mark over 947
per se say percentage but I believe what he's kind of doing is somewhat
sustainable so I get the question why not the Canadians why not us as they say
when you get golden like that as I mentioned in my lead in like a percentage of
the fanbase that's watching this you know what I mean having that perspective
hold on a sec just because I do want to give him a shout out good friend and
all is fun to be able to discuss it Matthew Blackman asks can we start a
Domingo versus Gallo segment on the show what did I miss well call your
colleague and good friend of mine Mitch Gallo made the point yesterday that he
feels that you know people that say the Canadians contention window being two
or three years away is misguided it could be as open as early as this season
now I always ear on the side of caution I feel like that's a best-case scenario
situation where everything has to go right and that's a lot to ask of a young
team my argument was more along the lines of I would have agreed with Mitch's
statement if Kent Hughes got done what he wanted to get done before the trade
deadline right and I'll re up that by saying I believe that if Kent Hughes
does circle back on some of those moves and is able maybe find other moves but
in the same strategy or vein that he was looking at at the trade deadline then
I believe the Canadian contention window can open up as early as September yeah
and I just want to you know clarify my position on this you know looking at the
overall you know take from a fans perspective right by I say why not us more
specifically you know the Canadians have like a 40% chance of winning a round
winning their first round right based on stats and data right what did you do
I hate that stuff I hate that stuff 90% chance of making the playoff 40% chance
of winning around oh my gosh you know like you're gonna get into a you get into a
playoff series it depends who you play right but hold on like I don't know why
you're losing your mind over this it's called probability not use not use
specifically no I know I understand where you're coming from don't show me the
numbers I am I am the I am the king of the law of averages I abide by the the
rule of law of averages right but based on the percentages like anybody that's
ever put a dollar on a game you know you're you're hedging your bets so in the
context of a goal tending performance the way Jacob Dolby's has been playing
yeah totally they could beat anybody in their first round 60% chance that
Hank makes an appearance I think I think it could be higher I mean I have a lot of
control over that I don't have the I don't have control over the Canadians
winning around I have a lot of control on getting Hank on this show what
happened you muted yourself again you're so handsy with your microphone hey I said
it works 60% of the time yeah yeah I know I you just I mean you know I know
Italy has a 0% chance now of making the the World Cup after yesterday you okay
with that no I make good money on that you had a boy had a boy fool me once shame
on me that's right twice shame on me too fool me three times you know what the
drop your sadness brother the the Toronto Maple Leafs rule applies to Italy the
World Cup is just better with Italy involved in it it's a it's a shame they
couldn't get over the line down down a man yesterday to a to Bosnia but yeah it is
what it is Italy does Italy is two two levels either they win the whole damn
thing or they don't know and they just they won the Euros recently like they beat
England like now I don't know and that will forever that will forever be my my
Stanley Cup back to professional hockey here I love how active you are but
then I can't find your questions so many comments what chance Canada finish
first what is the chance of Canada finish first finishes first in their group
maybe not first but I think after yesterday the chances of them finishing
second are much higher yeah I think switch I think switch I think the Swiss
still get in on top but I think now I think Canada gets out of that group my
own personal opinion and you cannot understand how relieved I am that there is
no internal conflict of interest of Italy playing Canada in the opening
around oh boy it's baby Hank up Hank up
damn it okay he doesn't listen to me guys I'm sorry I welcome I was in a dead
sleep no you guys you see I woke my dog up from a dead sleep
bill is exactly correct don't tell me the odds I'm not a star wars guy that's a
star that's not a star Han Solo is not Star Trek okay no don't don't don't be
Obama no no the question was who is the most memorable player I've ever
interviewed oh I got a good answer for that one yeah I would have to say the day
that I've been to meet off signed as contracts yeah that was a kind of a
shining moment that's a badge of honor for sure yeah well I mean I was told
that I was lucky to fall on that and that was in a scoop but that's besides the
point oh Joe's just a joke everybody please come on now worry not a Han Solo thing
come on don't worry it's a joke come on Sean I am culturally aware pop culture
aware for the most part of course of course but I would say that to meet off
interview is probably the most memorable in terms of personality my
interview with Lane Hudson before the draft before the 2022 draft I had the
chant I basically interviewed the entire US team that was slated to go in the
first round so like Logan Cooley cutter goat C.A snuggler rude you name it right
I interviewed them all Frank Nazar was my boy at that draft as well and then I
interviewed Lane Hudson and I never came away more impressed about someone
because obviously you had known everyone's talking about Lane's size he's small
there's that but just before that interview I had spoken to a good friend
crack button who told me off the record at the time he said it since that he
would have put in terms of pure talent he had Lane Hudson in his top 10 right
and so I asked Lane what do you think about that and he's like why only top 10 and
I was just like okay this this is the kind of guy you're dealing with and the
interview went really well to you know and all to intense purposes Lane spent a
lot of time talking about his brothers as well and how we needed to pay
attention to them coming up it was very selfless and at the very end when I
asked him you know like what would it be like to play for a team like Montreal
they got two second-round picks first that's exactly your range and he's like I
want to play hockey where hockey is the most important thing and there's no
place where hockey is the most important thing then in Montreal and when he got
drafted we were sitting in the media lounge first of all there was a standing
ovation in the Bell Center but we were standing in the media lounge he walks
in and I remember asking in the question now you're part of the Montreal
Canadians how do you feel and he's like man did you hear that crowd it felt like
I just scored a hat trick yeah this is the dream and that's exactly to me that
was like one of the most personable moments with that with with a player like
that because it's at the stage for the player that you guys now all know and
love today where you understand that there is no way that this kid had average
compete that guy at an 11 on 10
um rire since it says he won't let me give away a jersey to the star in
community fan base why not I don't know I'm you caught me off guard you got me
on that one rire soon did you ask no one's asked me anything about doing any
giveaways on the show I mean I'd love to give away a jersey I don't know you
know who's jersey just a Canadian jersey or or or what referee jersey those
referees that was a interesting way to officiate a hockey game yesterday
Ryerson's trying to send an email that's why I've been trying to send an email
okay to the you know well no send it to star and Demiko spell it out S.T.A.R.R.R.A.N.D.D.A.M.I.C.O.
at gmail.com then we'll be able to get it to the you okay so do that I do
that and well obviously we we'd love to be able to do that Ryerson once again MVP
the star Demiko community 43 minutes into this show fantastic Marco we're
we're encroaching on a thousand live viewers on a Wednesday afternoon thank
you so much yeah indeed that's right we are a diverse community worldwide
we are in fact worldwide and please well I mean we have spiraling grease over
here that's why I need to sleep guys I don't I don't know the day time is
anymore and a new born and what days it and a congested Montreal Canadians crazy
compacted schedule they got a little bit of a soft spot here how you feeling six
wins in a row they've got the Rangers on Thursday night and then the home and
home with the Devils so walk me through how how the soft spot benefits the
Canadians or if they've been dialed up because they've been playing some pretty
good opposition and Jacob Fowler's next start what what what what are we
thinking first of all I just want to say that no one gets to deny me frappe
oh I love a good frappe and that's it so I'm gonna say I'm so proud of us we
haven't done an April Fool's joke to him so proud of us I never I'm never
gonna do that so don't worry Sean I punch people that do April Fool's
Joe that's a soul brother that's a salt so you're somebody's father come at me
I don't care but I think that I think that you know one of the one of the
elements this week and obviously look at the Rangers I think just given the
schedule you it's a do or don't right we've had this conversation on this
channel all season yeah where Jacob Fowler needs to play but also Jacob
Delvish is on fire on fire do you go with the hot hand and write him or do you
give Fowler an extra game because you know that it's gonna be a pretty jam
pack week next week as well yeah yeah I get my two cents I think we see
Dolbech tomorrow I think we see Fowler the first of the games against New
Jersey and then we see Dolbech again against New Jersey in Montreal on Sunday
that would be my take but again and I've made this clear don't ask me about the
lineup I will not ask Marta I will not ask Marco Martiano I will not okay so
let's leave it to that this is a good question your Marco if I recall you
told us to watch for Pickford very early in the season I'm not gonna take
credit for that when I was in L.A. at the moment at the draft when he was picked
in the third round I had a lot of folks that are far more knowledgeable about the
draft than I am I mean I I cover the Montreal Canadiens on a regular basis
that's already a full-time job to be able to scout prospects to that level I
can't take full credit of that I obviously did watch and heard a lot about
him because I watched the mem cup but there are a lot of a lot of people in the
house that said the Montreal got a steal and then when I got to talk to the
individual you know face-to-face or I guess camera to camera an absolute
stud of a human being stud of a human being and you know professionally I look
forward to working with him next year in La Valle you know the whole
Marco Martiano thing is unbelievable right I mean considering you know the
decision and and Marta is saying Louis again you know kind of spoke about how he
stays out of the goalies way and everything it's just not a coincidence that you
know the way you act dubious to the playing I mean you want to give you know the
majority of the responsibility and the and the compliments and the pad on the
back to the athlete as he's leveled up in a in a big big way but I mean he's
clearly feeling it right now and what about that out of town scoreboard yesterday
you want to talk about the Ottawa Senators for a second getting absolutely
down by the Florida Panthers oh my god auto man up the red wings brother have
fallen off a cliff they were getting stomped out Anthony Manta on 28 goals in
the pain Pittsburgh penguins continue to roll yeah I mean first of all
when a bounce back year for Anthony Manta just a fantastic year overall this is a
guy that signed one of those and probably the next contract that a guy like
Patrick Liny's gonna have to sign one of those like post injury one year bonus
deals where he gets $250,000 every 10 games that he plays so he's he's been
fantastic what a bounce back here he's gonna make it himself a good amount of
money next year great bet for him to go to go to Pittsburgh like that and then
let's see if Pittsburgh's able to hold on to him but yeah I mean Ottawa's you
know there was a lot of controversy with Ottawa right think about it Linus
Olmark on Saturday said he wasn't willing to play right yep not available
Travis Green said he was not available to play yeah he just said he couldn't
play he needed a day and that got a lot of pushback because you know that
decision was based on mental health and and whatnot look I get it it's been a
difficult season for him but it was a V game of the season and he doesn't show
up that rubbed the players oh dude on such a wrong way and then he gets into a
game and let's in five goals in the first period yeah and if there was ever a
backbreaker for the season anything at all that could kill what was a beautiful
momentum from the Ottawa senators there it is I think I think the senators are
done I'm I would be very shocked to see I think my two sons watch out for
flyers man what it what about the capitals Ovechkin hits 30 goals again he scores
twice yesterday Washington picks up a big win we we take a look at at the
overall standings in the NHL's Eastern Conference right remains as dramatic as
exciting a race as we've seen in a long time the Columbus Blue Jackets have
lost four in a row the Sands have lost three in a row the Red Wings have lost
two in a row the flyers have lost yesterday a rare loss for them that they
have like seven wins in their last ten games the Washington capitals brother I
mean there are three points out of a playoff spot with everybody above them
losing games consecutively yeah I think the out of town scoreboard yesterday was
fantastic for the Canadians and honestly I have for this last performance they're
not stupid power to them well again I've said this before and I'll say this
again I didn't think they were gonna be Alice but whatever I think that the
heart is probably gonna go to Kuturov this year or celebrini if San Jose is
able to squeak in yeah but ladies and gentlemen my number three probably gave a
pastor-nack mm-hmm that's good call it's just incredible yeah like I was watching
both games at the same time the beauty of having multiple screens in the
basement while you're with the baby and the Bruins game like pasta is nuts
yeah nuts and again like we talked about the Montreal Canadian this is what
and obviously McKinnon is is part of that conversation of course I've got a
ballot of five basically yeah but I think you look at the Bruins the Bruins
haven't established core elite core McAvoy eleted his position Swainman
strut elite to strong in his position pasta elite in his position so when you
have that basis it allows you to maybe extend a window or quickly retool
around those players right like I feel like the Leafs can do that too but they
gave away all their futures right tough luck but the Bruins the what the
Bruins did last year I thought was excellent in the sense that they were able
to quickly retool release a couple of teams out of their top of their top
prospects and a couple first round pick I mean how good is Fraser Minton
for them oh my gosh oh no trading him and and a top five protected first-round
pick and a fellow yeah for Brandon Carla like what a steal getting a first-round
pick for injured Brad Martian who had barely played last year yeah I think is
good value considering that he decided he only wanted to go to Florida so
they have assets to continue this along and they drafted James Hagen's Dean
Latour nose coming like it's not the it's not ideal I still think that they're
gonna be they're never gonna really go back to being a top team in the NHL
like like a top five team like we saw them for for many years but they're
gonna be sticking around accordingly just because of that and with the salary
cap increasing the way it does if they continue to be aggressive they could
continue to add players so that's the beauty of having an established core why
does that matter because his channel doesn't care about the Boston Bruins
right I assume nobody in the channel cares about the Boston Bruins why does
that matter because it's exactly what what's being built here in Montreal by
Kent Hughes is having that established elite core in place and then just
plug it in place and around them let me ask you though quickly you heard
anything on what the players with James with James Hagen's as far as Boston I
mean they're gonna add them I heard I heard it was more likely than not that
James Hagen's is gonna play maybe five six games with the Providence Bruins and
then signed as ELC okay okay because it's looking more and more like the
Bruins are gonna make the playoffs yes it does big one for them they got it to
an early early two nothing lead over Dallas as Marco mentioned there was a good
night on the other board and I'll go one step further if Michael Hagen's
season had ended on Sunday I think that there was an opportunity for the
Canadians to try the same thing I don't think you're wrong there tonight on the
out of town scoreboard three games on tap not a single game features an
Eastern conference team so Habs Nation a chance to perhaps take a breath and
catch up on on your PVR or or here's a here's a novel concept maybe spend
time with the family because there's really nothing to watch Colorado
host Vancouver the Kings hosting Lewis and the Sharks host the LA Ducks that's
the late game that's a nine o'clock game tonight so LA Ducks Pickling there well
that's it and let me ask you speaking of the California teams for a second you
know you talk about Toronto and the fact they're void of premium picks right and
you went through the freezer mint and deal with everything else I mean I don't
know you would know this better than I would but I think there's a take to be
said about that if Toronto is like dead serious I don't know if I believe
them that they don't want to rebuild but if they want to Marco I mean you've
got to trade Austin Matthews right I mean if you want a premium package in
return I know how many teams can absorb that 13 million dollar and he's got a
full new no move so he has to go green light before anything obviously but
okay you really if they're serious about this if you really want me to address
this I'll address it but really don't clip this okay yeah Austin Matthews has
a full no movement clause he will decide if he wants to move or not right but if
he decides if he wants to move or not don't expect you know a ridiculous like
super duper monster return I think because the fact that he's limited remember
how little Artemi Panarin went for it right because if you're trading Austin
Matthews you're still not getting a guarantee of an extension no well I'll give
you the example of Quinn Hughes Quinn Hughes got the value of about four first
round picks I think we can all agree that he would have gotten more had there
been more guarantee for the Minnesota wild right they would have been able to
ask for more but because the maximum guarantee that you're getting is 18
months of Quinn Hughes well they got still a really good package but maybe not
the package that you would put together for a top three defenseman in the NHL
in his prime well the same goes for Matthews if Matthews decides he's gonna
play hardball and only wants to go to one or two teams you know and the leaves have
been there right look at last year last season the the the Toronto Maple
Police tried to trade Mitch Marner three times three times yeah he was
almost traded to Vegas a year before he was traded to Vegas for Shay Theodore
he Mitch Marner nicks that deal he was almost traded for Miko Rantonen also
nicks that deal right they tried to trade him but when you have no movement
clauses man your window just get smaller and smaller and smaller and the the
thing that really hurts is when you have a no movement clause you cannot build a
proper market for a player unless that player is willing to play ball and I just
don't know that Austin Matthews would have that big of a list of players that
big of a list of players I think it would be LA Utah you know Dallas you know
a Robert a Robert Robertson brother reunion for Austin Matthews you would
happen wow that would be interesting it's a joke it's a joke yeah but you know what I'm
saying yeah that's a gym meal kind of out of left field kind of play um that's
racist I'm not full gassy oh there's a there's a fake there's a fake Marco in the
chat that's why they be oh remember at the beginning of the season yeah yeah
or the tail end we had a fake Marco account in the chat yeah yeah the fake
Marco has re-emerged yes it was a mistake to give I know like Loris had a very
as a very good question here can you say then that it was a mistake to give
Mariner and M.C. so an M.C. is a no movement clause we just finished talking
about it it means that you can't wave a player and the player has full control
unless otherwise specified over where he can be traded you cannot give a
player that would be considered an RFA so restricted free agent so generally
between the ages of depending on when they start to league 18 to 27 but if a
player starts their career earlier like 18 or 19 they get to free agency faster
because it's seven years or you turn 27 years old so Mitch Mariner started at
19 he was able to become a free agent this summer at the age of 26 didn't get
there did a sign in trade but you get what I'm saying the last year of his
contract had had a no movement clause because of that I am a hundred and
fifty million percent against the notion of complete autonomy in the last
year of a contract it kills the flexibility of any team of course and it
absolutely ravaged the entire value structure for the Toronto Maple Leafs
because why and I'm not going to swear here but I really want to why in the
hell the Kyle Dubas get backed into that corner when Mitch Mariner was holding
out a training and proceeded to give a no movement clause in the final year
like what are you doing and the same applies Matthews had had a little bit
more negotiation power because he was gonna be a free agent so he signed a
four-year deal right he was gonna be a free agent made a little bit more
sense we get it okay but Mitch Mariner out of his entry-level contract
getting an NMC is a lunacy and I'm very happy that we haven't seen can't
use do that with any of the contracts with the Montreal Canaanes is their
trade protection yes yeah right five ten full lockdown mode the full lockdown
but a but giving them a hundred percent yes control that's crazy bro they
were giving I mean it was the trend it's the trend in the national hockey league
for how many seasons now right well look at the look at the market market look
at the New Jersey doubles Quinn Hughes would be a New Jersey double right now if
they didn't have so many goddamn no movement clauses right yeah right again we
talk about fiscal flexibility yes what about causal flexibility yeah I'd like
to see much just as a fan I'd love to see much less of that I'd love to see the
trade perhaps go the go the other way like it only used to belong to the star
exactly and it's not just Mariner Matthews and Mariner are star players yes but
like Jesus what are we doing handing out NMCs and like 25 team NTCs to the
third-line players like what's happening here yeah you know you look at the
Andre Palat situation like what why did why did Fitsy sign that contract and
New Jersey like what's going on yeah but again you know they get desperate
they want to try to sign those free agents but they don't want to spend too
much and so they they utilize clauses especially during the flat cap era to
acquiesce I hope that we see a pushback from that moving forward you know you
can get some level of no trade protection but full no trade protection is
is just a recipe for disaster unless you're a hundred and fifty thousand
percent sure like a Nick Suzuki for example that that player is going to be a
lifer make sure to like and subscribe to today's video we are four
subs away from hitting fourteen thousand six hundred as the oh my god yeah guys
hit that like button there's we're almost there to fifteen thousand it's
crazy I know it's going quickly huh what did you want you wanted us to hit
fifteen by the playoffs didn't choose those by the end by the end of the
playoffs I said the draft but by the playoffs would be crazy like listen if
we get to fifteen thousand by the playoffs it's we may get Kuku but
it's made I know maybe I'll just go start making some some fake accounts just
to boost the at the sub like that's so sad don't don't do that Sean I don't
have enough time okay I'd rather see a couch I'd rather see another
Morales couch pose than you try that did you see the Photoshop someone did a
great job photoshopping me with from the Morales couch pose on a matches with
the Jacob Dobas I got to admit I kind of yeah I'm gonna I'm gonna send that
over to Jacob see what happens maybe I'll make a big poster and I'll send it
over to your house you could put it in your kids room just to traumatize
them unnecessarily so thankfully my kid doesn't sleep in his room yet so we
have put it there I was gonna say put it in your bedroom but I I don't want to go
there no thank you Colcoffield Marco breaking news Colcoffields on forty seven
goals brother like breaking get get get Stefan Richey on the watch get him to
tour the Canadians coming up this starting in New York City on Thursday
night I want him in the building because mister every night is on forty seven
goals I mean I've been preaching for so long I'm I'm ready for new chapters of
history hundred points Nick Suzuki is eight games left eight points to get to
these century mark and Colcoffield has eight games to get three more goals to
get to fifty yeah I say he does it I say does it a hundred percent but it is
absolutely insane to be thinking that we're having this conversation where I
know for the first time in forty years yeah the potential for and a hundred
point players right there yeah but Colcoffield like can he get three goals in
the next eight games yeah I think so I think where things may get a little bit
more a little bit difficult is maybe I think coffee will get to fifty but I
just maybe gets edged out ever so slightly yeah my Nathan McKinnon for the
Maurice Rechart I think that's what might end up happening I really hope he
doesn't get stuck on forty nine I don't want to go over you know Nick Suzuki not
passing the puck or no no no if if coffee you know if coffee will to get stuck at
forty nine and it's the last game of the season Saint Louis gonna play him
twenty five minutes that game none of this is not a joke I'm telling you I
understand yeah yeah he's getting to fifty I don't like it's happening you're
I still of Cops yeah I made the joke I was like are you why are you always trying
to pass it to Cole he's like I want Cole to get fifty he's like yeah but you
got to get thirty he's like yeah I know but like fifty's rare I was like yeah
it's laugh yeah be honest here not many people on your draft they were willing
to say that you were going to be a thirty goal score either yeah get to those
thirty goals and he's like yeah you're right and now he's one goal away and
and and right Adams correct the point to say what he talks about your ice
livkovsky thirty goal one goal away from thirty that was by the way his
fifteenth power play goal top five in the national hockey league for the
twenty so you're in fantastic he's been fantastic Marco I watch him shield the
puck don't don't take this out of like to the extreme but when I watch him
protect the puck I see I see yeah I see yeah or sometimes the way he's
strong arms guys and just you can't get the puck off him that big to this is so
good man I mean listen obviously this it's a it's a similar style there are
notable differences and I think everybody that takes this for what it's worth
can understand yeah are notable differences but yes yes all that being said
stylistically I understand what you're saying all right man good stuff lots of
fun sixty five minutes just a flew by on the line presentation Marco and I
will be back Friday at noon as the Montreal Canadians try to run their winning
treat to seven that's crazy I don't think you could have I don't think anybody
could have predicted that to to two two two three weeks ago for those that are
still the rate of one three in a row they're now okay they don't play until
tomorrow night yeah they're not playing exactly yeah exactly so for those that
still here we will have an interesting video up tomorrow a lot of you have
asked about T.J. Hughes we've gotten some information on that so for those that
are members that'll probably be up later today for those that aren't following
or that aren't members be sure to like and subscribe because this is going to
be some interesting talking points especially with a teammate of Michael
Hage potentially available Kuku bananas y'all habs one six and row they just went
to the lightning of beat him four one let's go eight games left we'll be here
for each and every single one of them that you can put in the bank I know
Marco's not the biggest probability guy but that is a 100% fact Marco
thanks as always brother we'll see on the channel tomorrow and then Marco and
I are back live with you Friday at noon time fresh off the habs in New York City
to play the winners of three straight bottom beating New York Rangers have a
good day everybody
