A couple different pods up and then pods coming as well, spoke of Denson Hollis, almost athletics foundation CEO yesterday, also yesterday, spoke with Annie Gibson, the current department of agriculture, Commissioner for Mississippi, running for governor, those two podcasts up. Neil, you taped Pete last night, I assume, so that will be in podcast and video form tomorrow. Is that correct? Yes, the butcher versus the spin instructor will air at eight in the morning, tomorrow, central daylight time and then Pete will follow immediately at eight 45. So we'll have about an hour and I mean, two hours and five, 10 minutes of of content at MPW digital on the on the live stream, starting at eight a.m. Jeffrey, we get a pic in a minute, but you and I and Neil were just talking about a vanity fair yesterday, John's halty book coming out.
I think in September 15th, I will look for that, John's supposed to be on the network next week with this to have a conversation regarding his book, Lane being Lane, I believe is the title, but a couple different excerpts coming out yesterday in vanity fair, the first one recounting lanes Alabama, Escapades and some pretty fiery quotes there. And then the second that Lane was the whistleblower on the for really thing that he commits, dabbo to go nuclear on that. And that Ole Miss former player, former head coach Matt Luke was the one that informed Ole Miss of those shenanigans taking place. What's your, what's your read on this right now? Oh, by the way, Chase, Davos, we need has denied that. I am blown away and shocked by that. Yes. You're not saying dabbo's telling the truth or isn't telling truth. I'm just saying for the sake of clarity, dabbo has basically said that Lane is not being honest.
Which Lane wasn't the source on that though. I mean, Lane didn't tell talk to you that. Oh, no, he's just saying that he's just saying that whoever he's just saying that's not accurate. Yeah. I didn't parse through everything, dabbo said. I don't know the clip of the denial. It felt like there was a little wiggle room. I would presume like most things in this. There's probably some plausible deniability. Listen to any of us three think that that's not true. Like that that the spirit of it is not true. I don't know. Here's what I can tell you. I mean, Lane Kiffin is he is the guy who broke up with the girl. And he wants the girl to be miserable for the rest of her life.
That's what he wants. That's who he is. He broke up with the girl. He can he does not want her to ever find a smidge of happiness. That is that is the truth. That is who he is. And he did he thought Ole Miss would lose to Georgia. He thought they would get blown out by Georgia. And he had a plan for Ole Miss getting blown out by Georgia. And then you guys know that not what happened. We saw what happened. Ole Miss won an incredibly competitive one of the most entertaining games I've ever seen in person in my life. And the sugar bowl Ole Miss won the game. And that did two things. One derailed his plans and B gave Ole Miss another week. And in that week Ole Miss got a lot done that maybe would have gotten done. Had it not had it not beaten Georgia. No, no, we can do the hypothetical thing until we're all blue in the face. You're never going to know the answer because that that
eventuality didn't come to fruition. But in that week Ole Miss locked up Trinidad Chambles. They locked up Qtuan Lacey. It forced a pissed off Lane Kiffin to start tampering with TJ Dottery who I don't think Lane intended to get. In fact, the rumor is, I don't know if it's true or not, I think it is based on who's told me is that TJ Dottery asked Lane Kiffin at one point during I think Egg Bowl week. It may have been the open day, but at some point between Florida and Mississippi State last year on the practice field, where's your purple? So there wasn't a lot of love between those two. And then all of a sudden TJ Dottery becomes a target for LSU. And again, that's not being critical. Everybody tamper's whatever who cares. But this is what this is. What's coming out is what we've all known is that Lane Kiffin was absolutely enraged that Ole Miss lost to...
Ole Miss beat Georgia. Ole Miss beat Georgia. And maybe had a meltdown at Ole Miss beaten Miami in the festival. But by then, on the night of January the 8th, when the season came to an end in Arizona, most of the portal stuff had gotten done. Now the ferelly thing we've covered this ground, you know? Whatever you want to think about it, Pete brought Ferelly in, liked him, didn't have a spot for him. Ferelly goes on to Clemson, commits. They give him a truck or whatnot. And they don't sign him, they don't actually sign the paperwork. Dottery leaves, Golden goes back on Ferelly, they get him, whatever. I mean, here we are in September the 3rd or 4th, whatever today is. And nothing's happened because, frankly, guys, I don't think anything's going to happen. I mean, you know, so it feels like the wins are starting to turn a little bit on Lane.
But he can't stop because at the end of the day, the former girlfriend seems to have kind of settled down a little bit, found a different kind of guy. And she seems kind of happy and it looks like things are sort of working out. And he hates that, even though he moved on voluntarily to another girl who he viewed as sexier and was going to get him in better circles and all of that stuff, whatever, whatever terms you want to use. But he that's him. He's petty. So this none of this is like super surprising. Now, the only thing I'd say it's surprising using your analogy, usually you don't feel that way when you break up with the girl. Right. You feel that way when you get broken up with. Sure. Yeah, you want them to be miserable. You want you want everything to fall apart. But no, I mean, he ended the relationship. And she kind of thrived. Now, we'll find out just how much thriving she does over the next several weeks and months. But as of this moment, she looks like she sort of moved past him. And I think that has absolutely infuriated him.
Yeah, you can. I mean, you go back to what happened in December. We've covered this ground. I think the national media is just now catching on to something that we've kind of known since the beginning. I'll give us credit. I think we, I think we covered this starting in the middle of October last year. Ole Miss was never going to let Lane coach the playoff game as LSU's coach was never going to happen. But he thought that ultimately they would. That's what he thought. And when they didn't, he tried to burn it down. That's that's the genesis of all of this. He got a team to the playoffs and he was the head coach that got a team to the playoffs. And then he voluntarily walked away from that team. And I guess he was shocked when they went ahead and played the games. But he absolutely thought.
And that's my opinion. It's fairly educated. For the record, he has not ever said this to me. But I think he thought they would get smoked by Georgia. And that sometime on January the second, he'd have, because the portal opened, if you remember that night, like midnight. At sometime on January the second, he'd have Kiwan Lacey, Trenor Day Chambers and others in Baton Rouge. They take a visit. They commit. They'd be Tigers. I think that's what he believed. And who knows, maybe he would have been right. Again, that's a hypothetical that everybody else can argue. You guys can argue it. I don't know. We'll never know. No one's ever going to tell you the truth at this point. And because it didn't happen, it can be that fun debate. The what if debate that you have for just ever and ever and ever. I'm not going to participate in it. I have no idea. But it didn't happen. They won the game. They flew back to Oxford. So we getting ready for Miami and doing portal stuff and in the process Walker and Keith and Pete and whoever else was responsible got those guys locked down. You guys know the rest.
Yeah, I just I thought it was interesting that. Vanity Fair ran the the first excerpt. I mean, I understand from a business perspective from Taltese publisher. Why you want that? That's a different audience. And it's obviously a salacious read. And you're trying to sell some books. Harper Collins, by the way, the publisher, Harper Collins is publisher. I wondered if that was a larger statement from Vanity Fair that they were not exactly pleased without the first story on link if it came out. That author was not pleased with. I think he, I think he looked back on it. Well, you got to, you got to follow up on things. But. I think he got lied to on a few things and ran with those lies because I mean, hell it made for good copy, right? I mean the image of lane kiffen being chased by some.
Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I mean, it's pretty compelling. I mean, it's a hell of a, you know, for fear. I mean, Vanity Fair is not exactly writing to the same people who read the athletic. You know, they're not, they're not writing to the, the, the folks that read team sites. They're writing to a little more high brow audience. And I mean, you can just imagine sitting there sipping your cappuccino mocha latte, Frappuccino, as you reading about the poor Ole Miss coach, leaving for LSU being chased down a road with the children in the back of the truck fighting for their lives. I mean, that is some compelling copy. And then he got called on it because it just didn't nothing, nothing of the sort happened. And at first, I think he was pissed off that some of the people who were calling him on it. I told you guys before we got started, I can only imagine some of the emails. I mean, holy geez. Yeah. But.
Sure he's pissed off at lane kiffen. Like, why the hell did you say that? That wasn't true. Now here's the other side that, I'm going to be fair stand point is it got a ton of clicks. So hey, let's try it again. They're clearly dabbling in. I don't blame them for running the story yesterday. I mean, running the excerpt yesterday. It's a win win for everyone involved. Yeah, I don't blame them for running it. I'm not even saying like, oh, this is an ethical or anything. I, I interpret it as. We don't like with the finished product of the first one was here's the opportunity for another one. Yeah, that is true. You know, they ran the Alabama stuff because it's so delicious. Yeah. I mean, I'll be honest. I think there are two or three things in that Alabama stuff that I'm not sure based on just things I've heard from people there that I'm not sure I completely buy, but the spirit of it is, is,
the user phrase is, is pretty accurate. I mean, there's, there's some stuff that happened there that never got out. Absolutely. The reason that Kippin ended up not being able to land head coaching jobs. It wasn't because people questioned his ability to coach. They questioned his ability to not burn the place down from a scandal standpoint. I mean, you know, taulty accounts, the Houston part. I don't know about the agency part of that. I have no reason not to believe it, but I can't independently confirm that that, you know, there was a belief that his agency was like, you cannot, he cannot go to Houston right now. You know, I mean, Houston's. Houston's got quite the lively night time scene. And the U of H is kind of right there in the middle of it.
You know, it's not exactly an academic institution. And I say that as a UL M grad, we're probably very similar. I mean, the bumper sticker used to say my son, he bees a coup. That's true. 40, buddy comes at me. My uncle often lived in Houston. And he used to joke about that bumper sticker all the time. Uncle George lived in Houston, have a lot of ties to Houston. You know, that there was a sense that, hey, we don't, we don't need lane to be there. I think lane was going to go with it with that or just. I was saying what with the detail that I actually was like, oh, I didn't know that was. I was under the impression he was headed to Orser on to be the office coordinator. And then the reason why the FAU thing happened was. When saven had caught word of that. Yeah. That was when saven was directing Jimmy to find him a head coaching job. I believe that to be true. That was.
Again, that's what I believe. Yeah. I believe that to be factual. And ironically, you know, I mean, I think about Kiffin being sextons golden boy. I don't completely buy that. At all. I mean, there's some truth to it, but it's far more nuanced and complicated than that. I do think that there was a sense. From what I've heard that in 2018, 2019, if lane Kiffin had gone to that Rouge as a highly paid coordinator, that probably wasn't going to go well. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't think that anecdote was funny. And this is. This is a no disrespect to Tim or because T could have been any other similar coach in the CAA sexton playbook. It is just kind of funny how. Even if you're a client of the greatest agent of all time, like, there's still kind of the the frat house rivalries at the bottom.
You just always think like, oh, well, he's. I'm not high enough on the packing order. He's helping this person. He's on that. It's like, it's just. In the end, Jimmy can't make somebody hire someone. No. And if you told me that Jimmy sexton had a golden boy that was his protected one, it would be Nick Sabin, which would have made all the sense in the world. I mean, anybody who would blame Jimmy sexton for looking out for Nick Sabin's best interest, you don't understand business. Yeah, no, I totally agree with you on that. I just, I don't know. I just kind of always think it's funny. It's like, oh, daddy loves daddy loves. Blair more. You know, daddy loves Conner more. It's the same. It's that I just love how even at like. An area that you think is professionalized what not. It's like, no, it's still just the same like. Human behavior that's probably, you know, riddled in jealousy and riddled in, you know, insecurity. I mean, anyone who's ever hung out with a bunch of football coaches doesn't walk away from that going, wow, this is the most mature stable group of people I've ever been around.
Wildly, wildly secure in their own skin. Yeah. Come on. John sold books. No matter, there's no doubt about that yesterday. He added some books to the shopping carts around the SEC and the country. I wonder whether a book like that can ever like, does that have enough national appeal to like take off and be a best. I'm not, I'm just asking, I don't, I don't know. It's probably as close of a college book as we've seen get a chance. I mean, Seth Wickersham always does it with his Patriots books. So I mean, is that. Is that much different? I want to be clear. I want to be clear. I'm not speaking for John. I'm not speaking for. I. My interpretation is why a lot of people write these books now is. In the hopes that it gets auctioned as a movie. Uh oh. So you're the basis of the script. Okay. Yeah. Um, I mean, I, I, I, I, I, yeah, it's, it's kind of complicated.
I don't know where the great apples to apples would be. But it's also thing, thing too is books. Look, the publishing industry is a disaster. But it doesn't take a ton of sales to be profitable. At a regional or national level. So it's not, it's, it's worth it. It probably a lower rate of sale than most people would realize just from my working knowledge, having best with its own. Um, but yeah, like, I mean, I've never spent, I've never spent one minute in that world. So I just, I have no idea. But like, I'm pretty sure Wickersham's last two football books both ended up in the same way. But like, I'm pretty sure Wickersham's last two football books both ended up on the New York Times bestseller list and they were. I just pulled it up. It's better to be feared than you, England Patriots dynasty and pursuit of greatness and American kings by, by, by, by, byography of the quarterback, basically talking about the rise of the position throughout the last era or whatever.
And I don't know that we've had a college version of this in a long time. Chase, the book that you can share it a little bit on. Yeah, with Feldman, uh, uh, meat market, meat market. I don't know how did that do? Uh, it, I do not, I don't remember exactly not overly well, but it was because Ed never could become a national name. I mean, Ole Miss didn't win. I mean, you know, that was the thing is when Feldman wrote that book so much of that next year was on, can Ed just make them a seven win team and eight win team to try to get some sort of value that. What this said actually had a conclusion. It was kind of meant for the next year. And I mean, I actually told this story with Neil on a podcast the other day is I remember being in Athens with Bruce that next year and, and Ole Miss lost the game over there. And you could tell it was over and I mean, Bruce was almost kind of despondent because it just meant it was a flop at that point, at least relative to what he hoped to be possible. And that had the ESPN engine behind it because that's when Feldman was doing. Uh, he did that book. I think he did maybe swing your sword on Mike Lee.
He did the ESPN book department stuff at that point. But yeah, you lane has got so much more national appeal because there's actually a winner behind it in some ways or whatever you want to call it and. Meet market in O just never had that because Ole Miss was so bad during that era. I mean it is it's it's rough now. I was also just thinking as you're talking through that like the. Just the the difference of the business where it's like ESPN could get behind one of its talent writing a book you know and sell that like that's not even the you know that's not even the case anymore. I mean I'm looking here I was just sort of curious. They do so they have I was looking at. See of nonfiction options. Monthly lists like I was wondering is there like a sports.
Because you know it's like I don't think like the New York Times best so this doesn't work like the billboard hot 100 right where it's like where you're yeah you're not spread off into genre if you will outside of fiction nonfiction. I don't know like there's clearly not like a sports section but I mean. I mean I don't think this is about to become season on the brink but at the same time I don't think it has to get anywhere near that to be profitable and worth it to harbor Collins I guess that's the point. My my my I think this will be. Well I do think part of it now is like. Some people end up starting and writing on a subject to kind of become the authority on the subject. Yeah. Yeah the document here he's going to the kitchen things going to go one of two ways in Baton Rouge right I mean see if you're going to flame out disastrously or he's going to win big. No to your point I think you I think you'll agree with this.
As it pertains to LSU. I feel like the only certainty that I have is when we get to middle end of November we're going to be able to sit back and say well this was obvious. And it's going to be one of two things like this was obvious like hey it was a fifty million dollar roster and just they had all kinds of talent and yeah of course they were good no duh. Or it's going to be like. Look at all the chaos that was going on before the season and of course it didn't go well it just feels like wherever whatever conclusion we reach will look back and say it was obvious sure that's kind of the irony of hindsight. Yeah it's. I agree with that completely. I'm going to get into the games and second we'll start with Ole Missing but the one thing I mentioned this too is there's some proof of concept obviously off top tall these last book or Harper Collins wouldn't have agreed to let him write a second one this is his third title. Hey first did the leadership secrets of Nick Sabin were Nick work with him to some extent or a book on leadership and then his last book was the price.
What it takes to win in college football's area of chaos and that was a Harper Collins book he wrote with arm and can tell you. So this is this is second Harper Collins for John after working with arm and so there's some history here. I mean he's super talented. So we'll see I don't know I'm eager to talk to him next week we'll see what all he says at that I remember in that point I remember in 2004. Gene Wojcihowski got literally full organization wide access to the Chicago Cubs. They just come off the the Bartman year where they went to the game thigh outs from the World Series except they'd sign Greg Maddox all that stuff there was lots of attention on them and. Wojcihowski had full unfettered access literally everything and you know the Cubs collapsed in September down the stretch and the book. It was still a really good book I bought it and read it but I don't think it ever took off the way that that you know they thought they were these things when you get embedded with someone like this you it's a gamble.
How did Jeffrey lasting on the books how did that was it was it three nights in August the Cardinals book do back in the day was that what it was called with a rusa. You that not the title or or three nights in August is that the bonds book. So what I can see the I thought three nights in August was the bonds book about his decision to start juicing and it was the opening scene I remember was. The bonds is in a hotel room with his side piece and he's having like an unbelievable year. But it's all just dwarfed because of McGuire and so so and he comes the conclusion I I'm a better player than them if I start doing what they did what they do I can. So I'm going to have to become the biggest star baseball and that like that's the decision point the book I'm referencing three nights in August strategy heartbreak and joy inside the mind of a manager and it was Tony lorusa giving unlimited access for like a certain number of days it's but but buzz bison.
Yeah, I'm sure who wrote Friday night lights. Yeah was the author on that. All right, again, hit the big games and we'll see. Buzz buzz and Peter burger like actual like actually related like that's why they that's the other. Yeah, I don't know that I thought you're going to tell me to hate each other or something. But they're like that's why like whenever buzz is stuff gets made into movies or content it Peter's the one that does it gotcha Sunday night number 24 Louisville plus six and a half versus number not Ole Miss 630 ABC Nissan Stadium in Nashville Jeffrey the one game you put a paragraph on stuck to your guns there. And a lot of talk about Jeff brawm being a very dangerous underdog or you sitting on this for Sunday night. I want to be clear I don't know how anybody can know anything when you haven't seen any team like you can book roster kind of projections together I can we don't know this is strictly a gut feeling that.
I think this Sunday's just going to be kind of a sweaty game. I think Ole Miss has got the trump card and that Trinidad I feel like it's going to figure out a way to pull it out but I just kind of see this game being not a lot of fun. Great I could be good drama but not a lot of fun for this audience. It's not a shock that's a good game. I agree with that we all think that but man there is a strong sentiment in in in kind of things to Jeffrey's point I'm not putting words in his mouth but there is there does seem to be a strong sentiment that this is going to be a blowout and it's just not a lot that really supports that that belief I mean except for the possibility I guess that Louisville's offensive line is so discombobulated in the quarterback is young. I take the Pete last night and Pete was talking about Jeff Brahms ability to kind of help a quarterback get rolling and again this kid was heavily recruited.
He went to Ohio State they typically recruit really good players. They're high on and he's got a great back behind him. I think Ole Miss's defense is going to be very very good people inside the building think it's going to be great. I'm not saying that they're wrong I just haven't seen them yet but Jeff Brahms good in these games and this I agree with both of you. I think this is a four quarter game that Ole Miss wins and probably ends up being a blessing that they played it because you probably need to get challenged with what's coming up in the end of the month but I don't I don't think it's going to I'll be surprised if it's the super comfortable joyful kickoff party that I think a lot of people seem to think it's going to be. Maybe Chase now will hop on Sunday night and you'll realize hey there's a difference between a well-funded SEC roster and a well-funded ACC roster and that's I'm open to that.
My gut just says that this is a close game. I honestly feel a little better about keen holds because listen I know Julian say and had not great performances against Indiana and against Miami but there are a lot of quarterbacks that didn't look their best against them but he was really good last year. And I don't have any problem believing that the guy that lost out is still a good player because I did think Julian Sam was a very good player last year. Ole Miss wins the last possession game what do you think Jeffer and I was complete guest with the podcast what do you think will be sort of questioning with Ole Miss moving into week two and three. The yes start with the obvious does the offense look discernibly different because that's where the most changes are. I think then it could it could dwarf into.
But obviously a lot of this depends on what is this close game look like you know is this just a thrilling classic is this a slug fast that you leave unimpressed with both teams I mean I do think that's part of the story. I think it's possible then the the conversation becomes is did they spend too much money on defense not enough money on offense. But if the defense comes out and looks great and the offense doesn't up like that's a formula to I think the big thing is like what what comes of it. I think this is going to frustrate you chase because I think you're willing to have kind of some high brow conversations over the next two weeks and assuming Ole Miss wins the game I think the whole Kippin coming back and all that stuff is going to take up so much of the oxygen that we might not really have a read. It's going to be almost immediate yeah yeah we're not going to have a read on this team in terms of X's and O's and stuff assuming that they're like winning I don't think we're going to have a real feel for this team.
I think the LSU Kippin stuff assuming Ole Miss wins on Sunday is going to eat up so much of the oxygen that I don't even know that we'll really have the ability to dive into the other stuff. I mean we'll do some of it like Pete I mean we can Pete now to talk about how next week on the show we're going to like look at what Ole Miss did or didn't do against Louisville. We're not going to talk much about Charlotte nothing to get Charlotte but you know we're going to turn that page a little bit and get into that but for the most part everyone's going to start talking about the 19th and Kippin and all the stuff that's involved in that game. Yeah I was going to also say I think Sunday could be also determined by what happens on Saturday. Oh for sure. Yeah I mean most people believe that LSU is going to handle business and be Clemson if they come out and they look great and Ole Miss looks conkey I mean there you go.
Yeah I mean the expectation down there they're so wooly right now I mean they think LSU is going to I mean just demolish Clemson. They have massive media requests for this game massive celebrity requests for this game it is going to be an absolute party in Baton Rouge just before kickoff but now look what do they look like on the field. Do they win the game there's there's a lot of pressure on like Kippin and that LSU staff going into this game a lot. Yeah I'm going to get into that right now Clemson real quick the line Clemson plus 10 and a half at number 11 LSU 630 ABC. I pick Clemson to barely cover I just it feels a little sputtery to me. Yeah I'm kind of early trying to fade conventional wisdom because I felt like the signs were there last week that TCU was in disarray.
And I felt like everyone just thought that thing was going to be a blood bath by the time Saturday came around I was like whatever I'll fire give me Carolina give me the points I didn't I might say I pick Carolina to win the game but. Davos gets the SEC's been bad like there's no denying that like I think it's like this last 12 they're like oh and 12 and I don't think they've been all that particularly close but there's just something about this that I'm like man. I don't know it feels like the entire world thinks this is just a blood bath and there's still some good players on Clemson. I mean that's kind of the disappointing about them last year's like you looked at the draft and you're like that team with seven and five in that lead. It's not like oh you know it was a seven and five team that was in the SEC and played you know eight top 20 teams like it that was a schedule that was that was completely navigable.
New and I've been discussing all week that we're getting old so I can't remember was last year the year before when they played Georgia and it was just like a boa constrictor but nobody scored much. That was 20 23 oh wow it was that long ago okay never mind I was hang out I was in Denver oh I was at my buddies wedding I can remember that my my best friend from homes Georgia family watched it together that was. Sorry that's the 2024 season okay let's put the difference so 2024 because last year Clemson played LSU in Clemson and it was the they lost 17 10 yeah. That's right last year Clemson loses to LSU 17 10 Georgia Tech 24 21 Syracuse 34 21 SMU 35 24 Duke 46 45 and then they lost to Penn State 22. 10 in the bowl game at Yankee Stadium but they lost at home four times last year at home to average teams.
I would say we weren't talking about a lot of great teams I mean if you're someone that you're someone that wants to bet LSU I mean I also think the signs of the end are definitely there at Clemson I mean you got the coach that. You know it's backs against the wall we're bringing in we're bringing in the yes man I mean Chad Morris is back the entire offensive staff it's like you know the gangs all here again that's usually not a great sign. I guess this is the next game that has some G2 it even though it's boring the crap out of me and that's Baylor plus seven versus Auburn Senate Atlanta 230 ABC out go look making his debut is the Auburn head coach I don't know what to make a Baylor at all. Get bucks in a quarterback I I just kind of picked Auburn to win a close game because I had no idea. To me this this primarily centers around do you think DJ lagways 20 25 was Napier do you think it was injury do you think it was like is he fixable I think that's the real question and if the answer is
yes then I I think he's good enough to make this a game I just kind of viewed it as I think I'm kind of I've Auburn had a little better schedule I would cut it quietly be higher on them I think goal is just a good coach I know he doesn't excite a lot of people it seems like on on the message board but I actually think he's a pretty good coach I think Brian Brown is a really good player and I think he's a good player. I think he's going to be able to scheme up enough to give them problems and the only thing like I really feel comfortable in this game chase is like if you go find and I don't know if we're doing it this year college player props you could find total rushes for total rushes for pie and brown I want the over. I call him bucks and you know I'm doing nothing entire precision it's okay can't really help it. Yeah I think I still call Barry Odom David about every fifth every second or third time.
I am glad you mentioned that because I don't have the game on the list we hadn't talked to you yet Memphis getting that win last week I mean is it kind of boys and then this thing opens up. So they're opening up their their renovated stadium this week so there's excitement around that I mean Huff is an infectious guy and when you've had one of the most boring. Frontman for the last six seven years he's super easy to get behind and I thought it was a really good win you know you're you're in that featured spot on Saturday night no one else is playing and. I thought the encouraging thing from Memphis is on defense that look to be repeatable they got a really good defense of front I thought their linebackers were pretty good secondary is a little sketch but you don't have to be that good if you're that good up front. And you know that game completely flips when boy the the center for or you know the when he got hurt Memphis just started bombing the middle of you know these offensive line and Jackson on a new prayer and they found a way to.
To enough on offense and they close the game out by just shutting down you know the you know these last 12 plays went for negative like 15 yards. Of so this comment resonate with the fan base. Yeah I saw there was a threat of I was I was perusing this morning I saw there's a threat on. I took that as like a compliment to Ole Miss like I took that as like hey to like hey the all the good players like you can go somewhere else other than there it was like. That to me like that implies like they want to go there like so I don't I don't know I thought that was a little. Here's a go he would have said hey don't go to can don't go to Tennessee go here yeah like I thought it was a compliment I people are man people are like walking around looking to be offended relax geez he's just doing his job I mean.
That was smart. Yeah I mean in terms of resonate like I don't know if it's like a rallying cry but right now he's he's got buy in from the fan base. What's their money situation relative to the group of five. They're at full revshare so that's a win I think in the American it's only them and usf I mean I would say they're probably now they're splitting basketball is getting a good amount of money too. So it's not just that but I mean they're they're pretty well funded the promise that would never really knows what's going on it to lane like. To lane I think the signs are there that they spend but they're very quiet about it and there so I think they kind of get forgotten about but I mean I would. There got to be in the top five in terms of spending a g six.
There's really nothing else of any major consequence in week one it's a it's a dud week one as far as competitive games almost a little will be only top 25 game that there is this week is are there. What teams are you sort of interested in on just how they function and look despite playing inferior opponents Jeffrey you got one or two. I think we got a certain task elusive right okay. Keylon Russell show what does it look like with key on Russell. I don't know how much we can learn from from our face on Brandon against Ferman but I'm going to watch it you know what I mean I think he's interesting. I don't know about y'all I'm not saying that this is wrong I've just been kind of. Taken back a little bit on the Florida optimism. Because I don't really know where it's coming from I'm not saying that like hey. I want to short all the Florida optimism but.
It feels really strong my gut says. Summer all is popular with media because the answer phone calls and john's also very popular with coaches. He's good dude good hang and so I think. What's happened is. It kind of like cycles in that you have coaches saying like hey watch out for them and then you have media like hey I kind of I kind of like this Florida team. But I don't know if there's anything. I don't know if there's anything that points to like the football of like Aaron Filo and Buster Falkner I like Buster I think Buster is a very good offense coordinator but like he's bringing Aaron with him but. Haynes King was such a. Such the driving force of that entire offense that like I don't know for certain that it's just plug and play for Aaron. Oh coming God no Haynes is good damn good coach quarterback.
I mean probably underrated. He is the type of guy that may and you can win some games with. And they did. And did really you know and. I do think how you see a laser fun game late on Saturday. Thank God we didn't add a 17th game to pick. I think that one's that one's fun you want to talk to hype train who boy the Bob Chasney hype train that is rolling. Yeah he's got the national guys just absolutely toting the water. And he might be right I don't know. I mean I think he's a good coach I think the problem is I think it's a part of my French I think it's a shit job. It is like I do think he's a good coach but I don't have any money. Correct I also think there's lots of good coaches. God there's just nothing. I was trying to think.
Missouri denied everybody by the way they play Pine Bluff if you just nature football. No there's nothing because this is and this is why when people do the conversation about the night that CC game and where this is going in 2014 playoffs and stuff. These are the games the TV people look at them and go this is this is trash. It's trash you're asking us to put trash outside and go hey come have have dinner here. It's these games suck they they shouldn't exist. And if you're a man if you're going to do all week one because you get a you get a built in handicap. Yeah I mean sure I mean I think probably from up I think from a football argument it's probably better. Am I looking forward to this weekend not really but I do think because week two is good. Hey everybody gets a game under their bell it's preseason what not but like. Man I don't know yeah I.
I think we all know where it's headed it's headed to to more big games because you're trying to sell it as a TV product but. I mean. Could you imagine spending 500 bucks to go watch Missouri Arkansas Pine Bluff on a Thursday night. I guess if it's a you want to see your friends family I got I get that like. I mean for God's sakes two weeks ago I went to Fort Worth to go do a live fantasy football draft I hate fantasy football but I wanted to see my buddies like you know. Yeah but it's a question like Missouri plays tonight and there will be people that like hey it's football football football they're excited when it's 21 the nothing. I mean they're going to be in the middle of the zoo after six minutes they'll they'll be. They're going to find something else to do I mean the games aren't interesting. But it's too our conversation yesterday is the football fans psyche has not shifted to the NFL were eight and four is okay. Yeah I mean but they're going to 24 teams next year we're going to this next year.
I mean I'm personally interested in two lane Duke but I get it's not changing the day. I was listening in terms of the buffet. Yeah it gets it gets a TV. I mean my God I didn't count the board so there's so many fricking games. How many single digit spreads do we have this one I mean I was just waiting for single digits but I just want something to be like give me give me something give me a close game. I got no problem with that. I've got more at 44 and over than I do under 10. Yeah yeah I mean Duke's minus seven and a half sign me up okay. It sounds good. Awesome you get you're offering a once for game I'll buy.
Get wheels first game I don't know check it out so let's see what that looks like. Yeah I mean look at Sanky opened up all the T leaves within the last 24 hours completely fine with the 2014 playoff as long as everybody plays 10 power five games are power four games. Or whatever that way you don't call it you get it. I knew you meant. Yeah whatever that's what he said. Yeah go to 10 cool. Listen I know it I know the will hall 10 year at Southern Miss is not like what you want to put on your Wikipedia page. I also think can we add a little context like Southern was in disarray. He did have a season where he got him to a bowl game I do think the buy on will is worse than the reality. It's a chance at a place that inside its conference actually cares and compete compete. Good job looks like it's level. I mean Southern miss had no money no organization again it didn't go well they'll get me wrong but yeah it's.
That was not a complete fair representation. I don't think there are a lot of coaches that would have done that would have had a very different outcome I guess that would be my point. Yeah I completely agree with that for sure I think that's I do believe that to be. That to be true. All right let's see. Yeah I just kind of glance the head you're right we too is not bad at all it's pretty good. We too got some balance to like the windows are good. Even some stuff it's probably a little bit of a blowout but you would turn it on and be curious like Arizona state Texas A&M. 100% not mad at that. I just want some games where I think there's the chance of the outcomes not Arizona BYU Arizona's got that fun quarterback. No if a feeder yeah I'll play and then obviously Texas Ohio State at 630. Well then I mean we have Michigan we have Michigan Oklahoma early.
Then the 230 listen what if Kentucky comes out they spend a bunch of money in the portal and what if Kentucky comes out. Brashes youngstown state Metshi looks good vibes are high and what if it comes out and it's a little conkey for Alabama against East Carolina who's a credible opponent in terms of the American like they're going to be somewhere in that top five range of the American again I'm not saying you know upset a little but like what if Alabama comes out and just looks me. I don't know you can talk yourself into that game being interesting. Neil you got a prediction is a Kagan to be the full time a day at UAB. I have no idea. I mean I certainly wasn't talking like. Yeah if he wants to be I hope it works out for him I mean Andy's a super for all the jokes about stuff whatever Andy's an incredibly intelligent guy who.
It's probably as position is anyone to keep you a B. As relevant as you a B can possibly be in this era but. I don't know whether he would want to fight all that bureaucratic. Andy's not exactly a hey let's have a bunch of meetings guy. I think Andy would have chosen a different profession other than basketball you've been successful like yeah he's one of the few people have been like yeah Andy. Andy could have gone into the business world I think it been successful. He basically has I mean a lot of things that he's invested in have done really well. What I would say for Andy is do you want to be an AD in this universe because. I just think that it's no one really I don't think anyone's laid out the blueprint of like what the. The actual responsibilities are like forever used to be all right old coach get the schedule sells and tickets then we went to fundraising.
Now it looks like I don't know me it seems like. You're better off finding like a professional sports exec that like understands that but I mean I don't know if that's a given formula. So everything I've seen that Andy has said is that. Andy's trying to lead the transition. Yeah I think I think I probably agree with that I mean he didn't really he didn't really say yes or no but he gave a he gave an answer that was probably all he could say in the moment because I don't know what the plan is next and where you're moving forward and he's. He's good about not being boxed in in that way. I think the problem is you don't know the candidates are right. This is good only because it means we don't have to talk about it at all for a little while but the house leadership in DC is only going to meet for two weeks instead of four. In September which means that the protect college sports act if it passes the Senate does not get to the house until November so we can go ahead and table that bad boy and I have to talk about it for for a bit so that's good.
You're ready to have Nick Saban preach to us every Saturday on that ad. Oh no here's the thing on that I mean here's the thing I'm not I don't watch that show will not turn that show. No no no no no no no no no commercials. Pack is doing like a ten million dollar buy and savings the face of it. That might lead to me watching. Is it that misguided though like is his Q rating still at all anything with the average fan. I don't know it's not with me I can tell you I mean someone who. I don't watch a ton of it anyway I just want to let you guys have this coming out I don't I can't begin to tell you about these teams. But if I'm getting bombarded with Nick Saban I'm probably watching even less than I'm originally watching. It's it's only a weird choice for the die like I guess that's my point is the people who really care about that act I feel like Saban is not a good face of it.
If you think it matters at all what what's in a commercial which is very debatable I guess the only. The only pushback is more times than not all those things are focus grooved and researched. Now Cody Campbell is the wild card in this because Cody Campbell doesn't seem like listens to research or reads the room. So maybe it's just Cody Campbell's decided that's who he wants to be the face of it and he's paying for it. So be it but typically all that stuff is kind of. It's very like analytically driven and so I guess that would be the argument is that their internal numbers say that this is the right person but. Man I got to tell you like. It ain't motivating me. Last thing here Jeffrey I saw two more exits last night. Calaway was getting away from good good already right.
That has to be why the reaction has been this strong. I don't that that is one of the more. That is one of the more banana land stories to me of like the last three or four years because I want to be clear. I've never thought the good good guys were entertaining or funny no and that add like the thing that was bizarre to me is. It was a bad ad. They also were trying to reference something that no one had seen. So like they got caught up in the actual with like what the actuality of watching movies is what the credit response is because 99% of the people had no freaking idea of session. You don't get the reference and so like do I think it was a bad ad yes do I also think the guys in good good or looking and pummeling their their women every night.
Not even a percent. I also think the reaction was out like way out of whack. I think the everyone that's leaving now it seems like everyone's leaving because they. They can't make deals anymore. I guess I just assumed I mean maybe we're just in a screwed up world because we are in so many ways but. I guess I assume Calaway was not getting the return that they expected from that association. Thus this was a really easy watermark to go you know what we're just going to try to act like we're on some high road here and exit what was already not working financially. I mean Calaway Calaway. I think that's the other problem is like understanding what sells in the digital space is not a formula.
Like Calaway's run through like a rotation of you know pitch minute that we remember no laying up was with them for a while. And then no laying up went to title list. I remember four play was or not or plays always in the tailor made okay. I like the I think the Brian brothers were Calaway guys not I don't know if they were they might have been Calaway staffers before they went to the internet. Calaway also was heavily invested in top golf and top golf's not doing well. So I don't I mean I just think it was like one of those things that the internet spun out of control on and the messaging was terrible. And like it just got to the point where nobody could control it and they got to the point where it's like well somebody's got to go.
Are we at max capacity on the whole golf YouTube thing now. It's one of the most I think the two most I don't get it phenomenon is my lifetime are watching people play video games and watching other people play golf on YouTube. Yeah I mean it's a little business for some but it feels like we have we have hit the bell curve and we're watching golf YouTube videos of like horses. I want to see the course but like I don't I don't get involved in the these guys are care. I'm going to go watch the 12 handicap in the 80 handicap go told around in shoot 87. I do not care. Yeah I think I'm I think I'm with you there. All right we will wrap it there. Loose guy live here on this Thursday post game coverage from Nashville on Sunday Nissan Stadium for that and then tons of content heading into the weekend as well. Rebels 24 seven again you can subscribe there get paramount for free when you pay for eight so we appreciate that as well.
