We call them these because in the event that through the exercise of self-defense,

2:04he did by a law enforcement officer by a private citizen. If the perpetrator who's trying to murder you, break into your home, hurt your children, hurt your spouse, whatever, and you defend yourself, and they end up DRT dead right there, you indeed have saved the taxpayers' money. The cost of more than likely than not a public defender, the trial, the incarceration, the trans, you know, the trans surgery, once they get to prison, all of that, all the medical care, everything. So you do save the taxpayers' money. And in fact, the sheriff tells us so. If somebody's breaking in your house, you're more than welcome to shoot them in Santa Rosa County. We prefer that you do, actually. Hopefully you'll save taxpayers' money. In fact, just not only that, but you should. I would tell them if you value your life, you probably shouldn't do that in Pope County, because the people of Pope County like guns, they have guns, I encourage them to own guns, and they're going to be in their homes tonight, with their guns loaded. And if you try to break into their homes to steal, to set fires, I'm highly recommending they blow you back out of the house with their guns.

3:05So leave the community alone. Which is the more cups, sheriffs, police chiefs. Saying exactly that, I would highly suggest that if a looter breaks into your home, comes into your home while you're there to steal stuff, that you take your gun and you shoot him. You shoot him so that he looks like grated cheese. Because you know what? That's one looter that won't break into anyone else's home. Vingo, let's get started. First one here is let's go to the Santa Monica Pier. Maybe the Beach Boys. We begin tonight at 11 with a horrifying scene playing out in front of hundreds of families of the Santa Monica Pier police shooting Killaman. They say was charging at them with a knife. Thanks for joining us. I'm Jury Rand, Liz Nege's off tonight. You're watching I witness news at 11 on ABC7, Disney Plus, and Everywhere You Stream. After the shooting right on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, that man's body remained on scene as residents and tourists watched on in horror.

4:06I witness news reporter Tim Pulliam joins us live from Santa Monica with reaction from people who saw the fatal shooting unfold. Tim. Yeah, Jury, this police shooting caught people by surprise because it happened in the middle of the day where hundreds of tours and locals shop, eat, and play. This citizen app video shows the urgent moments after a Santa Monica police officer gunned down a man in Palisades Park, one of the city's most popular destinations. I literally came out and I mean I could see them doing chest compression. Caroline saw the aftermath while leaving her hotel directly across the street. I'm scary and sad. I don't like to see. You can't kill. The shooting happened around one Saturday afternoon on Ocean Avenue. Police say officers were responding to a domestic violence call by the park when a random man unrelated to the incident brandished a knife then charged toward an officer. The suspect ignored repeated commands to drop the knife and continued to advance towards the

5:11officers. One officer discharged their firearm striking the individual. No one else was injured but officers shut down a large part of Ocean Avenue for hours during the investigation. Jonathan from WeHo came to Santa Monica for an afternoon at the beach and couldn't leave after 6 p.m. his vehicle was still surrounded by yellow tape. How frustrating is this? I was frustrating. We have a dog at home trying to get home or a dog. Wait dinner plans in Highland Park. We can't do that anymore. Look closely. It appears to be the weapon investigators are piecing together what happened, talking to witnesses and reviewing security video along with the officer's body camera. Any incident resulting in life is significant. We recognize the impact this has on the deceased members family and those who knew him. Chief Jacob says the man appeared to be in his 40s. He's not certain if the man was homeless. I can only imagine how traumatic it could be for the officer. I'm appreciative of people who have to engage with that kind of energy and level of danger.

6:18Police say they found a knife here at the scene neither the suspect or the officer have been identified yet. In Santa Monica, Templium, ABC7, I witness news. Sam, thank you. Yeah, thank you, Sam. Why? Why do people do that? But the story didn't tell us. I didn't hear anything about why do they ever... Oh, well, stay off the pier. Be careful when you're on the pier. Let's see, a man... I don't think we've ever had one like this before. A man steals a sailboat. The suspect was seen walking around the Liberty Harbor, Marina before jumping over the fence and onto the docks on Saturday evening. He looks suspicious to some, but it wasn't until Jim and his wife came to the Marina to go sailing on Sunday afternoon and realized their boat was stolen. I think I've been in kind of shock. I mean, my wife and I came down to do an afternoon sail and

7:21I look at the dock and it's like where the hell's the boat? Jim says his wife stayed calm and sent out alerts to the boating community along the east coast. This morning, authorities in Newport Rhode Island spotted the boat in their harbor. When they approached the suspect reacted violently. The male fled below deck, ignoring commands from officers. The party armed himself with a fire arm and shots were fired. The suspect is deceased. One officer was shot in the lower extremity and is in stable condition at Newport Hospital. Those who work in the Jersey City of Marina say the suspect stole the most recognized sailboat around. It is a 1968 classic that Jim purchased 10 years ago and has been meticulous in upgrading the sailing vehicle. The workers in the Jersey City jet ski shop say they knew something was wrong

8:23when the suspect came into the shop on Saturday and his behavior was odd. He changed most apparently about three times while he was just on the premise here. So, you know, we have pictures of him walking with one shirt on, the key west shirt on, then we see him down at the docks in the camouflage style shirt, and then we saw him up in here with a white shirt on. Now for some commentary. First, a sailboat jacket. So, we call this one. Never heard of that. Two, there's a lesson in this for you, Dragon. The perpetrator looks suspicious. He comes in with one t-shirt, then he has another t-shirt, then another t-shirt, and another t-shirt. I'm just saying, be careful when you're out there always wearing different t-shirts. 16:43And I want to play this one simply because I want to respond to a text message. His sister Rochelle acknowledged his actions but criticized the employee's response stating, yes, he was robbing them, but that clerk shouldn't have shot him. They should have called the police. Stop breaking the law, loser! On the text line, Michael, you know a lot of these people with knives. They're mentally ill. It's sad that they have to be killed. They could be shot but not killed in order to stop them. The example that I gave before the break about the woman in Times Square is the quintessential example of why the idea that you could be shot but not kill them doesn't work. I don't know if you've seen the video or not. I don't know if you've ever been in Times Square or

17:45not, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it is packed with people. You can ask any law enforcement officer, I don't care a rookie, a guy's been on the force for 40 years, retired. Ask them this question. When you shoot because someone has a knife that has already killed someone and has stabbed others and is lunging at you, do you try to shoot them in the leg or the foot? You try to be like in the movies and shoot the knife out of their hands or do you aim for center mass? You aim for center mass and you do that for two reasons, maybe a few more, but two that I want to emphasize. One is when you're shooting and you're shooting in Times Square, if you're trying to be you know a movie star and you're trying to shoot the knife out of their hand or you're trying to

18:46graze them in the shoulder or kill them in the leg or the foot or whatever, you run a better than 50-50 chance that you're going to kill an innocent person, that you're going to hit somebody standing off to the right, to the left, or even behind the assailant, the perpetrator. Imagine that woman, now they've already tried twice trying to tease her, not trying to be rude here, but the first one I think may have gotten stuck in clothing or something she just yanked her down through it. The second one hit her, but because she is obese, it didn't have any effect. She's now lunging at the cops. Cops will take you there in training. They go through this where you have someone with a knife and they're as far away as Dragon and I are right now, how far away are you and I right now? You think 12 feet? I was going to say 15 feet. Yeah, yeah, maybe 15 feet, 15 feet

19:49away. I have my weapon already drawn. Dragon starts to charge. Yeah, well, let's not take it into consideration. You're a stupid leg brace or ankle brach, knee brach, yeah, you're regular self. By the time I decide whether I'm going to react, not react, whatever, Dragon has already, he has reduced that 15 feet to 7 feet, 2 feet, at what point do I have to make the decision to shoot? I make in this cops who train to make the decision to shoot once they start to lunge. Otherwise, they're putting themselves and their fellow officers in danger because Dragon can relunge to the left of the right and get somebody standing to my left of the right that New York times video, a New York Times Square video is the perfect example of why you're pointing about what they could be shopping, not killed in order to stop them in the real world. It doesn't work.

20:52It does not work. And if you know that they've already killed someone, you know they are a legitimate threat, whether they're crazy or not crazy, they're a legitimate threat to themselves and everybody else in Times Square. So I would challenge you, anybody who believes that, and I'm not just saying this, I'm dead serious about this. If you think that somebody with a knife lunging ought to be shot in the foot or shot in the leg, whatever, ask any, any, I don't care. Small town, big town, retired, rookie, anybody. You ask anybody in law enforcement. They are trained to shoot center mass for several reasons. And that example in Times Square is the perfect example of that. All right, back to the award winners now. An apartment, apartment resident shoots and kills a home invader, but there's a twist.

21:55Our top story is out of the East Bay where freeman police say a person shot and killed the suspect trying to steal from their apartment by using the suspects gun. Quad for a supergull has our top story. One suspect is dead and another is in custody after freeman police say the two broke into an apartment on this property along San Pedro Drive Friday. Sad. It's really sad. Police say the armed suspects forced their way into the apartment at around 12-15 that afternoon and assaulted the two people inside before one of the victims struggled with one of the suspects took their gun and shot them with it. That suspect later died at a hospital. That's pretty scary. Police say the other suspect ran off but was caught shortly after and booked into the juvenile justice center facing burglary and felony assault charges. The victims' injuries were not life threatening and that burgundy all lives a few homes down. I'm sorry to see a young man die, but I'm

22:57you know, there's that old adjutant. I will not say it, but it's just it's just something that that kids shouldn't be doing. I'm sorry. There's there's lots more things that you can do than doing that. This is the city's third homicide of the year compared to five reported all of last year. In freeman, Felipe Chagall, Cron for News. Clean shoot, good shoot. A customer, customer. Wow. Oh, and guess what? It's a bank robber and a knife. A suspected bank robber, gunned down by a witness to the crime and it all unfolded inside the bank. And that bank is located right there on Highway 67 in Cedar Hill, NBC 5 Shannon Miller has more on who fired the deadly shot and the investigation. An unlikely twist in an armed bank robbery in Cedar Hill Monday morning as a customer inside this chase bank off Highway 67 shot the robbery suspect. What a day. I thought Monday was

24:01bad over a cotton patch. This is pretty lifts. You know, having a better day than that guy. Texas guy, Raider showing the scene from above. I go Compton said one of his workers to pick up cash only for him to report back that bank was surrounded by investigators, including the FBI. It said that it looked like there was a bunch of guns drawn on some incident. He of course was passing. So he really couldn't stick around. Cedar Hill police say they responded really after 90 into the bank for a robbery and progress call officers say someone came into the bank armed with a knife and demanded money from bank employees. During that time, an armed customer fired their gun hitting the suspect. That suspect didn't ran from the bank and was found by Cedar Hill police nearby. The suspect didn't take into the hospital where they died. I got here in Napa when they said the bank's cold. Then I got to smell a holiday. NBC 5 saw bank employees leaving for the day shortly after the scene clear. Customers coming to the bank and coming out dry on the business side. We need to attach so you know, we need to find in the ones to kind of make them's running. So it kind of puts a little bit of a hanger in our day and soaking up the turn of events when the suspect had the weapon turned on them.

25:07I've been saying things on TV where sometimes they'll take people down when they're the bad person get taken down. Now we're told a customer who shot the suspect remained unseen and is cooperating with police in their investigation. We're told no witnesses, no bank employees and no police were hurt in this shooting. That investigation continues now with the FBI and Cedar Hill police in Cedar Hill. Shadda Miller NBC 5. All right, Shadda. Thank you. I'm glad we had the comment in that one about well, I thought the bank I understand why the bank was closed. I thought it's not a holiday. Now back to the point about shooting center mass. The response that I get on the text line to that is cops do love to kill. There might be a bad cop that loves to do that. Again, I'm not sure you've ever had any legitimate down to earth conversation with law enforcement.

26:11I mean, just like that one statement right there that makes me wonder about this guy if he's an A cab guy, all cops are bad. I don't. It does because cops do not love to kill. Yeah, even the people to go back to the woman in the apartment, even you could tell how distraught she was. I mean, she's killed a kid to save her own life to protect herself and anybody else that may have been in that apartment. Nobody wants to do that. It's called self preservation. It's natural. It's the law. You have a right to do it. And I think it's moral. So cops do love to kill. I find that. It's I'm trying to understand this texture also. And I'm sorry to break away from the taxpayer leaf shots, but in the previous Texas that the cops should also could also hit an innocent person nearby when shooting to kill the suspect. So he seems somewhat reasonable, but then immediately puts in that statement cops do love to kill. What?

27:16You don't make sense to me, my friend. Oh, yeah, oh, I miss the intervening one too. I didn't say that if they had killed somebody with a knife, they shouldn't be killed. The cops could also hit an innocent person nearby when shooting to kill the suspect. That's exactly what I said. That's why they aim for center mass. And they do that. They literally go through a training. And I I would love for you to be able to witness that training because everybody thinks that somebody charging with a knife, oh, you can just jump out of the way. You can just dodge or you can just shoot him in the leg. No, when you're in and this is like pilot training. It's so realistic. They're coming at you with a knife. You know it's training, but you, you're self preservation, your own life kicks in and you want to save yourself. And they're trained to do that. And also by aiming for center mass, make certain that they don't hurt somebody else. I think that with all due respect to this particular listener, I don't think you understand.

28:22Oh, my brother, what was the cop? He told stories that don't paint a great picture. There any group of people, any group of people, you will find anywhere from 5 to 10% that are bad, which is why I always say that whenever we do a story about a bad cop, I always challenge all the good cops because the good cops will tell you they don't want the bad cops. The bad cops is exactly what leads to that kind of conversation. Homeowner Shudson kills a man trying to break into his home. We're developing story now out of St. David where police are investigating a deadly shooting tonight. According to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office, a homeowner shot a man who he claims was trying to break into his home early this morning. Sheriff's Office says the homeowner reported a possible burglary while his family, including two small children, were inside. He told police he thought he heard what sounded like a broken window.

29:23The resident says he saw someone on the home security system right outside the house. The homeowner told authorities he was armed. And according to police, when the homeowner went into the living room, he saw a shadow near a window. He says he thought someone was trying to get in. The homeowner opened fire and the man was hit. When Benson police got to the scene, they found a 67 year old man on response of outside a window. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Right now detectives are investigating and interviewing witnesses. Detectives have not released the man's name as they work to notify his family. Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannnell says in a statement quote, this is an active and ongoing investigation and our detectives are working diligently to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident. While we understand there will be questions and speculation, it is important that we allow our investigators to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation before conclusions are drawn. Our responsibility is to determine exactly what occurred and we will provide additional information to the public when it can be appropriate

Homeowner Susan Kills, another home intruder. Don't break in to people's houses. Stop it. The SWATMRA County Sheriff's Office says a 19 year old was shot and killed after breaking into a home in Chesney over the weekend. Seven News' Taylor Brady is standing by right now. She is alive with all the new developments on this storyteller. Hey Amy at this time, the investigation is ongoing but the SWATMRA County Sheriff's Office says they don't expect any charges to be filed against the homeowner accused of shooting the teenager. The Sheriff's Office says the homeowners are shaking up but under South Carolina's castle doctorate, you can defame your home if someone is forcibly breaking in and you fear for your safety. Investigators with the SWATMRA County Sheriff's Office say a 19 year old broke into a home on

31:29Cherokee Circle around 2 a.m. Sunday morning. The corner identified him as Xavier Felix Riviera Galtier. At this time, investigators are unsure why he chose that home. Telling us Galtier and the homeowners did not know each other. They've lived at that residence for a long time so it doesn't appear that it's any situation where maybe he'd have felt somebody else lived there. Lieutenant Graham McLelland says two residents were woken up by Galtier breaking through a secured back door. Deputies say one of the homeowners then shot him. We have more than one gunshot wound. A neighbor tells 7 news they were also woken up hearing at least two gunshots. It's a scary situation for the family who had their home broken into. They have to live with that fear of something like that happening for the rest of their life as well as the weight of what transpired with me encountered that individual. And then obviously you've got the family the deceased who has agreed the loss of their loved one. Galtier's death has been ruled a homicide but Spartan McKinney Court or Rusty Clevanger says that does not categorize Galtier

32:34as a victim. He says his role is to determine the manner of death not charges or blame. And just because you know I call it a homicide investigation that does not mean there's someone automatically has to be charged or needs to be charged. Sparmer Kennicore and Rusty Clevanger says the teenager who died is believed to have been acting erratically prior to breaking into the home including jumping out of a moving car somewhere in the area. He says investigators are working to determine whether he was experiencing any mental health issues. Live in Spartan McKinney Taylor Brady 7 news. Taylor thank you neighbors spoke to our seven news crew in this Chesney area they say investigators were on scene there for about six hours yesterday. There's actually a pretty good legal lesson in that one. The PIO whoever that was speaking says just because I use the word homicide does not mean that

33:35someone is charged or there's a crime or anything. And I think people can flate homicide with murder, manslaughter, everything else. Homicide by its very definition is just the killing of one person, one human by another human. That's all the homicide means. It's not a crime. Homicide is the act of one person killing another person. Which in many of these cases is we now see it's fully justified. Don't confuse those two words. A fleeing suspect somebody running away breaks into a home. Lock door locked door. And we're going to have to go all through the entry to C-side. Officers knew an armed violent suspect who had just committed multiple arm robberies, cled from police, crashed a stolen vehicle, entered an unrelated family's home and could be taking hostages. 34:38Police merged unit rushed into a home near Lyck Avenue and Good Year Street. All while the family inside was unaware an armed suspect was hiding inside their bathroom. Officers cleared the family and found the suspects, Anthony Chavez of Campbell, and engaged in what would become a deadly shootout as heard by ring camera. As officers entered that bathroom, Chavez immediately opened fire. Okay. Merge Sergeant Matt Walsh was first through that door and was struck twice by the suspect's gunfire. Sergeant Walsh and another merge officer returned friar striking Chavez multiple times. Chavez died on the scene. Days after a series of crimes that started days prior with two armed robberies in Sino-Z while police say Chavez was driving a stolen vehicle and switching out stolen plates. He committed four other armed robberies in 2011 and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. Chavez was eventually resentant and released on parole before his latest encounter with police

35:39Tuesday night. Despite being charged with new crimes while on parole, he was released by a judge on SOARP over our district attorney's objection. Not surprisingly Chavez did not report for GPS monitoring or for his next court date. Chavez should have been in custody, but instead he was out committing the robberies I mentioned and he shot Sergeant Walsh. Sergeant Walsh is recovering after being hit by gunfire and an area has bested not cover. The family in the home was not injured thanks to the work of Walsh and his fellow officers. Sergeant Walsh, thank you for your service. Thank you for protecting this family and this city and for sacrificing your own safety to do so. A man brings a shovel to a gunfight. Breaking news now in San Fernando police are investigating an officer involved shooting that happened overnight. Officers say the suspect was armed with a shovel. 36:41Staying good morning. Good morning, Jess. The San Fernando Police Department tells us that they responded to a call with an assault with a deadly weapon. That suspect said to be attacking someone with that shovel and that's when an officer involved shooting happened. We are still trying to get more information though exactly what led up to it. Now you can see here behind us they do have the area around McLean third blocked off. Residents say this is a busy area with shops and restaurants. The suspect's body believed to be in the alleyway behind us. Now video shows the body of the suspect covered on the ground. A shovel nearby both the police and the fire department at the scene. A San Fernando police department says they received a call around 1145 last night for an assault with a deadly weapon saying a woman was attacked by a man with a shovel possibly while she was in her car this near the 270 block of North McLean Avenue and third street. There were two other victims in the area as well. Though investigators haven't given more details about that. When officers arrived they encountered the suspect and that's when an

37:44officer involved shooting occurred. Despite life saving measures the suspect was pronounced dead here at the scene. We spoke with a man who was at a nearby brewery when this happened he did not want to be identified but said he heard multiple shots. Maybe 10 15 shots came outside. So a bunch of long force men off to your house. So I would suspect on the floor performing CPR. Kind of scary. It's scary because the city's San Fernando is really quiet. It's really, really peaceful. At this time the suspect's identity isn't being released as his family needs to be notified. Now the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation. We are told officers did have on body worn cameras. The San Fernando police department's interim police chief speaking out earlier this morning. First and foremost a human life was lost today.

38:44No matter the circumstances any loss of life is the profound tragedy and deeply impacts of family loved ones in the entire city and the community and the San Fernando. On behalf of the department I want to extend our deepest consolices to the family of the deceased. We are told the California Department of Justice is handling this investigation.
