2:04Very much as we look back at the 25th anniversary of the most devastating attack on American soil, the September 11th terrorist attacks. We actually have some news that I don't know, I feel like it's good news. It's always possible it could be worse that Jeff Co. schools could hire somebody worse. Probably what they're going to do when they get a permanent superintendent to replace Tracy Dorland. I feel like the board might unfortunately appoint somebody even worse to be the superintendent. Maybe that's just me being pessimistic. I don't know, but the good news today, let's just be positive, is that the chief legal counsel for Jeff Co. schools, Julie Tulison is retiring. She's no longer going to be there soon. That's good news to talk about this what's going on and look back at some of the greatest hits of Julie Tulison. I'm pleased to be joined by the founder of Jeff Co. Kids First, Lindsay Dadco.

3:09Good morning, Lindsay. How are you? Good morning, great. Thank you. Good to be with you to have you on the program. So let's jump right in. Julie Tulison stepping down. Why do you think this is? What's your big picture assessment of her tenure as the lead attorney for Colorado's second largest school district? Yeah, you know, it's hard to say exactly why they use the word retirement, but in the letter from the interim superintendent, which multiple Jeff Co. leaders sent to us immediately upon receiving the letter because they agree that this is a very good thing for the district. He included the words that Julie Tulison often avoided unnecessary controversy. For more context, she was the first assistant Colorado attorney general for Kate, called education. So she's been in Colorado education law for some time.

4:12And when we first saw the announcement that she would become Jeff Co's chief of legal, we looked into her and immediately saw that her personal Facebook page was flooded with anti-Christian rhetoric and extreme political personal political views. And while we're all about, you know, free speech, it did concern us that her judgment on social media showed her bias as the chief of legal in a school district that serves 65,000 students or so. And so that was our first red flag, but that was really nothing compared to what we've uncovered over the last about four years since 2022. And so yeah, I'd love to give you those greatest hits, Jimmy. I think it's shocking to people understand what has gone on. Of course, Julie Tulison has served as chief legal counsel over the course of the various scandals that we've

5:15seen regarding sexual abuse of staff and teachers upon students and other serious legal issues during the last few years, very much spotlighted through your work at Jeff Co. Kids First. I know I've highlighted it. Those of us on KLA have done so. When you look at a few of those things with Julie Tulison that give you a sort of sigh of relief that she's no longer going to be in this position, what are a couple of those two or three of those major things that stand out? Yeah, of course, first and foremost, the patterns HR gaps and neglected red flags with those 48 sexual abuse cases that we've tracked under her tenure, but just looking at even the federal lawsuit by Alliance for Fending Freedom, those records show she was given free opportunities to simply notify parents and give opportunity to opt out before they filed that lawsuit. Remind us

6:16about that lawsuit. That lawsuit is in regards to overnight travel. There was a young 10 or 11-year-old child female who went on an overnight Washington DC trip and was cared to share a bed with a male student who announced that he was male. That lawsuit now includes other parents who had overnight issues with their students and transgender teens of the opposite sex on week-long outdoor lab mountain trips or peers of the opposite sex and simply not giving notification or adequate accommodations, which is actually in question now by the 10th Circuit. We should be hearing their decision on that appeal. And so, you know, Billy, Julie, Toleston could have avoided that major controversy just by allowing parental notification and opt out within a caller out of law. Sure. Okay, so that's one good example. What are a couple others?

7:20Yeah, a few others. Julie, Toleston, we are hearing from top safety leaders that he removed law enforcement access to Jeff Coast systems. And that was a huge controversy. They were truly believed placing obstacles in the way of those investigations involving law enforcement, removing SRO's school resource officers from charter schools. It's failing to inform insurance of a major sexual abuse case and now potential millions will fall on taxpayers because insurance is declined to cover that case due to the failure to notify them. Placing decent distance on CBS 4 for an international story on a colon buying high school predatory case where they declared her homeless a decent distance on the CEO of Gaggle Safety Company for the audit that they covered up that Jeff Coast kids first uncovered. It is, it goes on and on falsely

8:25denying that any female are being deprived of athletic opportunities, timing her lawsuit against the Department of Ed with Harmeet Dylan coming as a long planned speaker at our charity event. And then indicating that there's some sort of conflict with her coming after email just proved that Julie timed that federal lawsuit against the Department of Ed. So let me jump in real quick for a couple of clarifications on that one because in this case for those who don't know of course Harmeet Dylan had the Office of Civil Rights for the Department of Justice came and spoke at the Jeff Coast kids first gala a couple months back. Great event by the way I heard the after party band was especially fantastic. But we saw that timing of the school district, Jeff Coast schools, suing the US Department of Education over Title 9 and the Trump administration pushing back

9:31against Jeff Coast schools saying your policy does not abide by Title 9's anti-discrimination provisions to protect for example, girl sports and so forth. And so the district decided to do their own preemptive lawsuit. And of course that means Julie Tollis and has to at least be involved in those decisions because she's chief legal counsel for the district, right? Correct. And they hired Jack Smith law firm showing how partisan jackal schools is politically. And also yeah we have an MLO coming they've filed a federal lawsuit and email show that they were basically attacking our gala which is a charity event to raise money for scholarships. Large portion of their communities are caftically saying that they weren't invited to our gala. So extremely concerning behavior behind the scenes all while Jeff Coast schools is messaging that they're simply seeking a legal referee. And you know that they just don't know which lot of

10:38follow federal or state. That's their their public messaging while internally they are extremely partisan have a very preferred outcome. What's interesting Jimmy is who the federal judge is longtime Colorado federal judge appointed by Bush. Okay that will be interesting to see what happens in that regard. Real quick just finally on this topic for about 30 seconds. When you look at Julie Tolison and the prospect of replacing her and obviously they're also embarking on a superintendant surge. Are you pessimistic like me or are you optimistic or are you how do you view what may happen with filling these two roles moving forward? I definitely am concerned. I am not sure there could be more controversy under the chief of legal who has been our main concern. We are definitely concerned about who this current board will point for the superintendant role.

11:41But you know you always have to hold on to hope that there's some good to be had and whoever does come forward and through an national surge but you can be sure we will definitely be watching and making sure that this district is being pushed towards neutrality in our classrooms and protecting our students. Aaron Thompson needs to leave and DPS he's in worse than Julie Tolison and that say something. That's for Dard Short. Now shift gears just for a moment. Yesterday I began the show by talking about my column. Jeff Co. Schools wheels and deals in the dark my latest for the Denver Gazette where I walked through how the district has been going about its sale of closed schools. There are seven in particular that are have either been sold or are up to be sold from the district including

12:46to the city of Wheat Ridge notably a pending sale of Wilmore Davis Elementary to the city of Wheat Ridge for $2.84 million Wheat Ridge buys that property and then will resell most of the property all but a portion for Parkland I think that's two and a half acres of the property for Park but only like $90,000 worth selling 2.75 million dollars worth to a private school that's special needs school worthwhile endeavor in that regard but without the district actually going through its normal process of we are going to put out for open bids we're going to allow charter schools we're going to allow private developers and the district will decide nope we're offloading that we're going to sell it to the city of Wheat Ridge and they've done this with other municipalities like Lakewood and we're going to let them decide how to deal with the property so

13:50that's a long little bit of context for this but the bigger thing here with Wilmore Davis is the property cost and how you can calculate the value of the school through various ways including one method that gets you to the replacement value of the school which is 20.6 million dollars based on school the school districts own data on facilities conditions and I bring this up in particular because you spotlighted this number of 20 million dollars which brought my attention to the Wilmore Davis deal and I started digging into it for this so with real quickly tell us your take on that briefly and then I want to play a snippet from a reporter that you have a god to know well shall I say talking about the appraisal situation because I've talked long enough

14:51yeah absolutely so what really stood out to me as a point that might be important for community numbers to see was that Jeff could put in 2.6 million into upgrades in the building and it's selling for just a little more than that and that was just an alarming realization that I know is great concern to parents who have watched their schools close and the financial decisions behind it and then learning about this facility condition index which is just a very simple industry recognized formula that is used to calculate the current replacement value of the building which comes out to be 20 million dollars when you look at Jeff Coase data on Wilmore Davis and the question overall there is could Jeff Coase have sold that building for much more had they offered it to say charter school or a dance school or somebody who would have valued

15:55that building and would have been able to use it and so that is the question there as we face another tax increase on the ballot and I thought that was an important point to highlight yeah with that a doubt that they want significant amount of money for they say teacher compensation and so forth for one and then a special mill levy specifically for building costs now there is a reporter a with thought is it what's the company that owns the golden transcript and some of these other publications Lindsay time something time okay she often writes for them the golden transcript is one that that I've seen coverage of this deal and so forth but reporter named Susie Glassman some of what she had reported was useful in my research looking into this but then Mrs. the marks some take a listen to this 20 million that's what a Jeff Coase first pose says

16:57the closed Wilmore Davis elementary building in wheat rich his worth and that Jeff Coe public schools is about to sell it for 2.84 million but here's what the records say the county associate assessor puts the whole property at 2.19 million and the building at about 1.8 million now that's a tax roll estimate not a sale price the district's appraiser value the land as if it were vacant not the building because when wheat rich asked for bids five of the eight wanted to tear the building down buyers were pricing the dirt so if $20 million is what it would cost to build a school like it today that's a different number than what anyone offered to pay for it the board was on this on Thursday so if you are anyone has the records behind that $20 million estimate send them I'd love to see that I did see a couple people share my column to her because that is deeply disingenuous first of all

17:58buyers yeah most of the buyers wanted were looking at the dirt but that ignores the fact Lindsey that the school actually wanted the building and is buying the building and when we saw another school that went up emery elementary the appraisal included not only vacant land as is and as if rezone but also included a replacement value for it and also included the actual market value for which was substantially higher than the sale real quick just about at a time here but what are your thoughts on that yeah and it's time local media Jimmy they owe all those local community papers like golden all of those and so what's interesting there she says does anyone have the records while the board has the records so yeah it's it's very interesting to see I actually pulled open records telling that jaco schools and red rock community college had to formally correct Susie on her

18:59financial claims and so I think I think we need to look at reporting ethics there attempts to discredit when actually the research has been done by jaco kids first and for community meetings you see the whole picture picture not you finances to drive an agenda yeah I agree and when it comes to the data it is there I got it from the district and then you work out the calculation from there and it's the easiest thing in the world to figure out and just because the district doesn't disclose certain aspects of an appraisal doesn't mean that they didn't actually do the calculation because guess what the chart that the district staff presentation presents leaves out the replacement value even though it was done for the emery school appraisal we'll see what happens because this one for Wilmore Davis is in out yet when it's out guarantee you that's going to be included but we are above time Lindsey dadco Jeff co-kids first always great to talk with you thanks so much thank you all right well to pick it up on the other side jimin for michael on k o a

21:09now in the next hour when we hear a little more details we'll get into it but what's so interesting is how much district leadership keeps doing to try and shield superintendant Alex morero and Colorado's largest school district and I say that because he is an absolute failure at his job he needs to go he should have resigned a long time ago but he is still a last he is still in office as superintendent and he's been going after board members like john young quistat large board member got him censured last year and taking other steps that are very deflective well now two more school board members are under fire with allegations of bad behavior

22:12one of them monica hunter accused of using an anti-semitic slur of some kind although that has not been identified and another dj torus accused of bad behavior there is a slide show presentation that was put together ostensibly by the president of the school board so she guiton that is claim after claim after claim after claim after claim after claim after claim about both of them and to me there may be some truth to this it could be true it can also be a deflection from morero who for whatever reason guiton is consistently supportive of and defending and two things can be true at the same time by the way there can be truth to some of the allegations there can also be truth that this is being blown out of proportion to defend the superintendent that by the way there's no room for acceptance of anything anti-semitic so I want to learn more about that

23:17and what the accusations are against monica hunter in that regard but it's just more dps drama normally when tay Anderson was on the board and he was censured for attempting to using social media platforms and so forth aggressively attempting to date multiple underage girls and more that was uncovered in the investigation he was censured and they did the whole investigation they did all the stuff now they're having a board meeting at this moment going over policy alleged policy violations and claims that aren't getting any specifics that's just dipping for one second you can hear the tone and tenor as monica hunter on the board and DJ Torres both being accused here are responding. Visual claim that allegation that you made runs through that same cycle one very lengthy email does not do that so I would add to director hunters request I want to see that mapped out each individual

24:25claim in accusation that that is not a requirement in the policy each board member can go and look at the policy right now using their their own computer or device thank you do that right now on a border on a border no thank you um doctor you let me finish my point of order point of order actually does not let you finish your thoughts I think you got the tone in tenor of what's going on as he argues that's DJ Torres arguing with the school board president so she got hit on because they're not giving specific information you have all these allegations being thrown against them even John youngquist he had a letter that was casting aspersions against him by the superintendent and then they did an investigation and then it came to the board for a full on okay let's hash this out a little more although the letter itself was kind of like this document bottom line Denver public schools continues to be mired in drama

25:28and it is crazy how badly some of their leadership want to avoid focusing on what's happening in colorados largest school district when it comes to academics school safety and more pretty darn astonishing but that is the world in which we live and I don't see anything changing about it by the way you want to join to the festivities k o a comment spirit how text line of course five six six nine zero michael's text line three three one zero three as well so Abdul elsa yad is the Democratic candidate and a socialist who's running for us senate in michigan and he said here is how he handles one of his small rallies at the on the campaign trail

26:30and what he says about president trump and when we come back we're going to delve into this because he's talking about trumping a symptom of our politics but he's totally missing and i'm not surprised he's the socialist but he's totally missing the bigger picture of why one might say there's too much money in politics or rather why someone could say there's too much politics and money and i'm running because i know that Donald Trump is not himself the disease he's just a worse symptom of the disease of our politics the disease is a system that allows big corporations and billionaires and special interests of buy and sell politicians in ways that leave them rigging the system against us is why we got to pay more for all we got to buy get paid less for the work we do and watch as our money gets misspent doing stupid things rather than doing smart things here at home so we got an opportunity to get money out of for money in your money and i know that all of us working together going to

27:31do that now one of the first things i want to do when i get to dc is make sure that we step up fight for our fighting unions and pass that pro act because we need to normalize union organizing and a receptive american life of course he's talking about oh my gosh we got to watch out for all the special interests and all the money in politics but hey the unions we got to empower that special interest group because we left this love them unions we love the unions we want them to be empowered because we loved money that they pour into our democrat campaign coffer you noticed by the way some of the way he speaks is like baraka obama i could just you can just hear it in something like this listen to his voice is why we got to pay more for all we got to buy get paid less for the work we do i don't know that that sound like black obama to you like he's one of the other democrats many of them do this try to imitate obama

32:56should be then you would not have the incentive to influence politics like this the problem is not that there's too much money in politics the problem is that there is too much politics in money too much government dictating how our economy and businesses and our society run in so many aspects and so they will of course go and try to game the system engage in regulatory capture throw money at politicians and what have you because if their industry is going to be controlled and micromanaged by government they want to have a seat at the table and that's understandable maybe if we skill back government made it smaller put it back within its means within its limits within its priorities maybe then you wouldn't see that the problem will only get worse with more government
