Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group that controls the Gaza strip, launched the biggest attack on Israel in decades on Saturday, killing  hundreds of Israelis and capturing hostages in a raid that shattered Israel's reputation of invincibility. 

Israel formally declared war against Hamas and retaliated with huge strikes on cities in the Gaza strip. The Israeli military called up an unprecedented 300,000 reservists within 48 hours.
