Hello listeners and welcome back to Pot of Their Own. This is episode 265 of A Pot of Their Own.
I am Allison McCague and I am joined this week by my lovely co-host Linda DeAndrea.
Hello Linda. And Maggie Wigan. Hello Maggie. Hi Allison.
So it has been a couple of weeks or like a week and a half I guess or so of actual spring training
games. Although everybody is about to, we'll get to this later in the show, but everybody's about
a quarter of camp is about to depart again for the World Baseball Classic. But that aside we have
had about a week and a half of games now. There's not much like super interesting happening which is
good when there's not interesting things happening. I feel like it's good news because I feel like
this time last year we had already like three catastrophic injuries by now. And this year it's
just Francisco Indoor's Hammy and nothing else yet knocking on all the wood. So
it's mainly got the bad juju out of the way early. Hopefully. So really the only things happening
that are I guess sort of interesting as far as like because a lot of the team is set like it's
not a mystery who's making the team and who's not. But there's like kind of two areas where there's
somewhat of a competition. And one of them is sort of the right field who's going to start and
then also who's going to be kind of the last outfielder bench piece situation. You've got Carson
Bench, the prospect who I think the meds were giving runway to win the job or at least leaving the
door open for him by not signing a starting right fielder. Juan Zodos playing left field now.
So we have him competing for the job with sort of Mike Tauchman who we talked about that they
signed to a minor league deal and MJ Melendez. And it just happens to be that all three of them
are performing pretty well. It's a nice problem. Yeah, it's a good problem to have. So I think
that that's like not really resolved yet. And that will continue to shake itself out.
It could be that two of those three guys make the team. It's just a question of who starts
or if they share time or what happens. Tauchman's hitting pretty well. He's like an actual
unlike last year with like Jose Azacar and company. Like Mike Tauchman's an actual major
leagueer like he may not be you know a starting caliber outfielder for a first division team or
whatever. Like the meds think fancy themselves as but like he is a major league baseball player.
Yeah, that's where that's where the bar is. Sometimes. And MJ Melendez while I'm not convinced that he
can hit although he is hitting in spring. He's in lots of dingers. He was a highly touted prospect once
and he was with the royals who are not exactly touted as a forward thinking organization.
And he gave a quote recently after he had like a two home run performance. I forget the exact
wording. So forgive me if I mess it up a little bit but the intent was basically like
he said like the meds are like unlocking my full potential more or less. Like they're having
me do things that like I'm learning things analytically about like my swing and other things that I
wasn't he you got the impression that the royals were not using analytics the way that the
meds are using. So you know maybe the meds player development apparatus can turn out a little bit
of a diamond in the rough and MJ Melendez who can say but these are good depth pieces to have
regardless. And stranger things have happened. So that will be something that will continue to play
out. The other part of the team that we're not exactly sure what is what it's going to look like
on opening day is the bullpen obviously. Almost every team has like a few guys that are
locks to make the bullpen and then they leave like a couple spots that are open competition.
The meds have you know a spot or two that are probably going to be up for grabs especially
because AJ Mentor is going to start the season on the injured list. One guy who is competing for
one of those spots is prospect Ryan Lambert who looks very good in camp he's throwing like
a hundred miles an hour looks lights out. But we learned that he added all this velocity because
he was bulking up by eating 30 raw eggs. He was the raw egg guy. I read that I don't quarter my
eye and I was like what the hell is that and then I forgot to come back to it. Yep. Yep.
Ryan Lambert's the raw eggs guy. I mean it's working. Yeah like good good good for you. I like
yeah like get get it guy. I don't know. Sure. That is like the least crazy thing that people put
in their bodies nowadays. So yeah like I feel like we've got we've officially got our weird bullpen
guy that's out of the Bryce Harper school of like blood chiropractor. But I feel like
every definitely metal each in his life. Yes yes a little bit of maha energy but still
but I feel like every bullpen needs needs one of those needs like an absolute unhinged weirdo
and Ryan Lambert. You know complimentary to be perfectly clear. Yeah. 30 raw eggs a day. Have
any of you have you got to had a raw egg before I never have. I've never had a raw egg. The expense
of that too. Braw eggs in Donald Trump's America. I just feel like I would struggle with that kind
of volume. At least like I mean I guess you are supposed to eat it in addition to all your
regular stuff because I wouldn't want to eat it instead because my regular stuff is delicious.
But like 30 eggs is a lot of that's a lot of eggs. That's a large I'm I'm five foot two. Where is
that going? I don't know. Yeah same. I'm 411 so uh Linda always looks like a giant when she
stands next to the two of us because we're a short podcast besides Linda who is like Linda's not
just like average height but she looks like my mom but you're also like that and that's very
comfortable. Yeah. Yeah. Why can't you just make an omelette or something out of them?
And like I don't know is the man heard of like a protein bar or like a protein shake.
Like I'm just going to go out there and say most people have started eating way too much
protein. The American did not have some giant protein shortage. Please everybody. Fiber Fiber.
If I could do the RFK junior voice I would right now. I can't. Thanks God. I'm the possible
impression to do. Turn to the staff cast if you want to hear Richard staff do an impression
of RFK junior. He does it really well. But anyway imagine that I'm saying in the RFK junior voice
can't have enough protein. I like I do feel like this this uh regimen of drinking 30 raw eggs
would be very RFK junior approved. Yes. I'm expressing some brace harbor approved.
Yeah. Yeah. The brace harbor school of blood chiropractor.
Yeah. Ryan Lambert is the next protege in this in this realm.
But I do feel like like I said I do feel like reliever has like more of this energy than like
first baseman. So I really need some unhinged relievers. Yeah. I don't think that that's had very
many unhinged relievers last year and I think that might have been part of the problem.
Yeah. They need they need an unhinged weirdo in the bullpen and I think Ryan Lambert could feel
that role if he makes the team. His fastball looks really good. I don't know. We'll see what happens
but he's in competition for that for one of those spots. You've also got veterans Luis Garcia
and Craig Kimbrill in camp. Kimbrill doesn't really look particularly good but I don't I think at
this stage of his career I'm not sure how hard Craig Kimbrill was trying and spring training.
I don't know. He also has he seems like especially as his career goes on that he could get
even more unhinged. He's got some some wacky new energy there and again all of this is with
affection. I want to be clear. Yeah. So like recently Jeff pass and tweeted that the
bullpen was a weakness of theirs and I understand how you would feel that way like looking at it
on paper but I don't actually think that that's true because he also missed some few people that
he really underrated or like missed entirely like Brooks Rayleigh and Minter and like like there's
the meds have a good core set of guys and they have like lots of depth competing for those
other roles and they have like eight starting pictures that could be big league starting pictures
competing for the rotation and one or two of those may end up in the bullpen.
I do feel I like their I like their bullpen depth and I think they have a lot of different looks
out there which is always great but I don't trust Devon Williams. I mean it's not even
I don't trust Devon Williams. It's that he's not Edwin Diaz and that's not his fault. Nobody's
Edwin Diaz but it does mean that they don't have a lockdown back end guy like they don't have
that relief ace you know who could just do anything. Maybe it's Ryan Lambert. More eggs.
No more eggs. No more. Do 40 Ryan. Maybe even a few more. I wonder how many eggs before he's
like the velocity stops. Like at what point is there diminishing returns with the egg to
velocity added. Yeah we need to test this. Can we get weird? No. But I mean so speaking of Devon
Williams he did give up a home run on literally the first pitch he threw his med which it's spring
training it doesn't mean anything but it is kind of funny. It's not it's big not what you want
vibes. It's big not what you want vibes yes but I mean he he did say like all I'm doing is
trying to throw shit in the zone like he threw a cutter that didn't cut he's just trying to like
fill the strike zone with with his stuff in like his first outing of spring or whatever and
that happened. And he's not a pitch he throws really anyway. Yeah the cutter is something he's
like messing with it's not his because obviously we know he's the air bender and that refers to his
slider. Yeah the cutter is not a pitch he throws regularly so he was probably just messing with it
and trying to throw a first strike and he threw a first strike all right just was very hitable one
um so you know I wouldn't take away too much from it but symbolically it's not great
but uh in contrast Nolan McLean who we he was like he's out in his first outing um he obviously
he's like further along in his progression than most because he's participating in the world
baseball classic for team USA so um he's now leaving camp but he looks really good don't get her
in the world baseball classic let's go he's playing team Italy in his first start he is yes the
plan is for him to do two outings in like piggyback fashion so like not do a full not do full
starts but like piggyback with another starter for two outings um so hopefully that goes well
and he continues to ramp up and look great but yeah it's certainly looking like the stuff is
the stuff looks like the Nolan McLean that we remember from last year and maybe even better
a tick better than that which is kind of insane and if that is not saying I'm having
2013 vibes but I am a little bit it just sort of I would say 2014 vibes
well no because I remember 2013 and because I was sitting there I think it had surgery and my
mom was over and we were watching spring trainings together and it was a mad Harvey start spring
training she said who is he and it was like mom that's mad Harvey and he's gonna be really good
this year and he was and then everything else happened but like that's the sort of we're like she
knows the best and she would like follow them and she and when I said the name she was like oh yeah
yeah yeah yeah I remember I remember um but like still that sort of feeling of like he like somebody
is turning to somebody at that starting going who is he yeah see there might he might be more
de gromme than Harvey yeah you're right but just in terms of like where like the way he's coming
out the way like he kind of had this like sneak peak last year and then you're like man could he
really be that good and then yeah the timing of the progression of it and just from the very
beginning of spring training being like yeah he can be he definitely has de grommean energy
though as far as his personality the way he carries himself the way he feels like he slices through
a game mm-hmm and just the way he just like commands the mound and like I have never and this
this includes de gromme and Harvey I have never seen pitches move that much ever from anyone
like I think just as far as like purely how much his pitches move it's the best stuff I have ever seen
like it's incredible it's crazy it's like whistleball stuff
uh keep waiting for it till more normal and it just doesn't nope nope and it's like it it reminds
you because we haven't really had a pitcher like that since de gromme left um I mean the
meds have had plenty of good pitchers pitch for them uh concurrently with de gromme and since de gromme
but it remind it just like reminds you like when you're that it's like I've I can still wreck it's
like oh yeah I can still recognize when someone's on a different level than everybody else that's
right that's what this looks like I remember now it's this um it's very it's exciting it's probably
other than the fact that like Juan Soto is in New York met it's probably the single most exciting
thing about the meds is the fact that they're all good yeah good one two at the top
that's a crazy one two punch if McLean is as good as he looks um and Peralta through three perfect
innings in his debut as well um and he's been acting real coy about that extension they asked him
about it um after the after that game and extension oh I couldn't imagine like he kind of smiled
and was like no comment um and then yeah with the smirk yeah and like right on cue this morning
uh Ken Rosenthal published a piece in the athletic uh the title loan says it all
Freddie Peralta already seems at home with the meds will it be a long term one question mark
question like the fact that Ken Rosenthal like obviously Ken Rosenthal doesn't have anything cold
right now but like the fact that Ken Rosenthal is like being like it is Freddie Peralta going to be
on the meds long term like that that probably says something about where they're at um and I would
always going out of their way to end that line of questioning exactly um I'd put the over under
it St. Patrick's Day at this point but yeah that would be really cool um if they announced that
the vibe that would like really boost the vibes going into the season um if they announced that
before the season started that'd be sick but I mean obviously I'm not gonna keep my hopes up too much
I mean it would remind it's obviously like not quite the same level star certainly not
gonna be the same level contract although you should get paid um but like when Lenore came over
and signed the big extension like that was huge that was that was amazing yep like this stuff is
just really uh it's important you know to have that continuity especially given how much the roster
has turned over this season to know that there's going to be a fixture in the meds rotation
and hopefully the one two-punch fixture in McLean and Peralta for a long time that would feel like
it does feel like that's the uh a young pitcher is kind of the last piece that they've been missing for
a while yeah um also it takes off like I love what Manaya brings to the team but I think there
was this expectation that he would just pitch like an ace right away because he pitched like an ace
in the postseason and that was so exciting and he's amazing but also like he doesn't have to be an ace
to be a great pitcher and worth keeping you know worth having on this staff and like when he's not
trying to squeeze himself into being an ace it just lets everyone else be better like he will be
better they will be better it's it's gonna be good for everyone yeah exactly shot clocks big shots

before we move to more baseball e topics um we figured that we would uh it's it's now the time
it is due season um I figured that we would announce our dudes for 2026 so get in here I was
going to say get in your bets but I I'm against sports betting so don't get in your bets don't
make any bets at all just know in your heart that you were right yes um so we will start with you
Maggie so who is your 2026 dude okay so I have kind of gone back and forth on this but you know last
year as I have a good run of dudes and last year my dude was back baby and I felt like he got a nice
little boost from you know the energy I was throwing his way and I feel like this year I really
want to give that boost to mark the antos um I this is sort of a real like put up or shut up
year for him I think he's gonna feel a lot of pressure to produce especially with power um with
Pete gone and and I just and I love that little little guy with the big smile and he's such a
huge really positive and and just really well it seems to love being a part of this team and
I also think like he could he could go off I'm and I am like hanging my dude hat on the the expectation
that he is gonna find another level and hit the bombs that he got those big arms to do and yeah so
that's my guy is it's gonna be viantos this year I I think he's really poised to have to have a big one
a bounce back year from mark viantos would certainly be a huge boon to the 2026 meds really
important um I feel like like big seasons from both mark viantos and frances go alvarez are
are huge things for this team um and very readable like reach you know these are guys who can
absolutely do that yes um okay so I am going to go next um and my dude for this year I don't have
as good of a track record as Maggie so I'm always scared of picking a dude because I'm scared
that I'm dooming that person so I was going to do frances go alvarez again because A I've done him
in the past and B I'm just a perpetual frances go alvarez believer um and I'm not like absolutely
like frances go alvarez forever yes um but I'm scared that that would doom him and also um I feel like
he's almost too established at this point to be like dude material um like he is the starting
catcher like he might have a good year he might not but like it's not his role is not in
question he's he's he's the guy he's the guy at this point um so my dude for uh 2026 is Tobias
Myers um I think that he low key is he has the chance to be like the third or fourth best starting
pitcher on the team like I know that he might not end up in the rotation right out of the jump
because of how many um starting pitchers the mets have um obviously we haven't seen um David
Peterson and Kodai Sanga um or Shamanaya pitch yet this spring because the uh the priority was
being given to um the world baseball classic guys and also uh Freddie opening day starter for
Eddie Peralta uh forgot to mention that um that was announced uh but uh uh uh but we have seen
Tobias Myers and he has looked very very good and I would not be surprised if he spends a
significant portion of the season in the rotation and like not as the fifth starter either um yeah
like they're gonna need plenty of guys it's a long season a long season and he like we we talked
about this when we talked about the trade like obviously a lot was uh a lot was made of Freddie
Peralta and that obviously that's the that's the prize of that trade but Tobias Myers was not
some throw-in it wasn't he was not and I I think that the reason why the mets had to give up so much
for this trade was because Tobias Myers was also a part of it and they wanted him and they gave
him he was getting two starters two major league starters they gave up more so they could get
Tobias Myers as well um and so I think that he's gonna play a really big role on the team this year
even if he doesn't uh pitch in the rotation much uh I think he will just by nature of like
dudes break dudes get hurt dudes underperform um but even if he doesn't I think that he's gonna be
the multi-inning lights out multi-inning reliever the mets have been looking for for years now
that Reed Garrett kind of was but he got hurt and they've been trying to do it with Oscar
Brazibon they tried to do it with Jose Budo and that hasn't that didn't super work out and
you know the mets have been looking for that multi-inning fireman for a very long time and I think
that bare minimum Tobias Myers is gonna be that and uh you know with the ceiling of being like a
mid-rotation starter so that's that's my dude for this year um Linda who is your dude for this year
uh my dude I'm going with Luke Weaver for this year um I don't have a good track record with
dude either uh I guess uh Harrison Bader was okay that one year no Bader totally counts as uh as
as a w yeah I'm gonna take that as a win um but uh he has a goober vibe to say I feel like um
he's he like he's he can feel that quirky reliever hold yes um 100% and I go up a good quirky reliever um
and I think too much got made out of him showing up with the Yankees bag oh yeah people got so
mad about that and I'm like that's the bag he has relax and he's a dude he's not gonna think to
buying a new bag when he already has a perfectly good bag like he was the first day spring training
limelow he probably they said oh it's a Yankee bag he lifted up he looked at he was like oh yeah
oh right yeah I guess it is um and then I appreciated when the kid was like uh I forgot
what the kid said like something like oh like welcome to the meds or something and he was like oh
yeah I'm on the better team now some he gave he he he pandered to meds fans which I
appreciated um here for and I do want to disagree with you a little bit Maggie I do feel like
he has the potential to be a shutdown late in and guy um maybe Devin Williams might be questionable
but I feel like he could definitely be in tandem with Williams to be a formidable back end of
the bull kind because yeah he suffered a little bit last year but I don't think he was ever fully
healthy um or he was good before he got hurt and then after he got hurt he kind of fell apart but um
I think he could be a key piece of that bull pen um to set up Devin Williams and it's been a while
since we've had a legit um set up man like we'd get it sure maybe Adam out of the you know but
but you're like the the old like Seth Lugo days yes yeah um
Madison Reed oh yeah so I would there's a name I haven't heard of you I would still die for
Addison Reed if we had a podcast back then he would have been my dude
the Britishers worry Collins would die for Addison Reed yes you know what if Luke Lee for
it could become Addison Reed done deal a soul I will happily start up for that any day to leave
he can even keep the bag yes and honestly like if you if you I mean the royal you not just like
Linda but if like you're a Luke weaver believer weaver believer if you're a weaver believer um
and not necessarily confident in Devin Williams like I would not be surprised if Luke weaver ends
up the closer at some point um it's literally what happened with the Yankees like
Devin Williams didn't perform well and Luke weaver what's the closer for a while like that could
happen and like I I'm not rooting for it to happen obviously because I want Devin Williams to
be good if if that happens then that's not good news for Devin Williams um I want both of them to
be good but the point is is that that would mean if if Luke weaver has a really good season
then if Devin Williams is not as successful it's not as much of a disaster because you have another guy
that you know you can rely on and I think that was part of the problem with Edwin Diaz too was they
were too compliant on him and yeah there was nobody to get it to him I felt like they would always
have one guy who was capable of it and they would just drill that one guy to the ground by like mid-June
and then Reed Garrett blows his elbow out and then who he is absolutely that's that yeah
so and I do like the depth and I think it's the kind of like it's good depth which is the depth
that like you always want them to have and they always are like we have 18 weaver wire claims
and it's like no no you want good depth because those are the guys that you're actually gonna want
in there pitching innings and you know not ending up with like Reed Garrett syndrome
and like you're hoping that the Ryan Lambert's of the world like it's great that the Mets
a found Reed Garrett diamond in the rough that is a huge like you know player development win
and like organizational win um but you hope that the Mets can develop like two or three of those
every year instead of just like one every few years you know like we talked about that like
for a long time Drew Smith was like the only reliever they had developed themselves
you don't want to have to plug these holes in free agency and via trade at the deadline
every single season time and time again you want to turn out a few Ryan Lambert's two backfill
the rest of your bullpen and and I think that the Mets are finally getting better at that I mean
like last season they didn't really have that last season it was kind of supposed to be Nate lavender
I think and then he got her yes he's back though um in camp I'm not excited about that
me too I'm not sure yeah for sure I'm not sure like his chances to make the team or like where
he's at as far as like getting back up to game speed things like that but I know he's back in camp
you've got Ryan Lambert you've got other internal options um that are vying for these bullpen rolls
and that's like a new aspect that they didn't have before like they have the NRIs and all that stuff
they have the Craig Kimberls Louise Garcia's the veteran guys that they've brought in which you need
those because you might need those like last year it was pretty events like it's just a few innings
for them and he pitched well um you need those guys around but you also hopefully you're developing
a bunch so that like you can turn these guys up and down from triple A and it's not a disaster when
they have and you're not wearing out you're you're lukewarmers by only being able to throw him
so lukewarmer good choice he's yeah feeling he's a sneaky good pickup like I feel like he kind of
has been getting overlooked was a good signing yeah it was yep um so uh in wider baseball news uh
obviously we have the world baseball classic upon us very shortly um it's very exciting
I like I feel like the whole we talked about obviously the insurance issues which are continuing
to play out and mean that not everybody who wanted to participate in the world baseball
classic is participating which is unfortunate um it kind of uh stunted the excitement a little bit
but I feel like now that the games are like coming up like this week I'm like I'm hype I I'm very
excited for it I think it'll be really fun um I'm excited so if you're seeing the the
Dominican Republic's lineup it's kind of ridiculous I think they're gonna win the whole thing
so I kind of feel like some loyalty to my neighborhood in this and I'm definitely playing for the R um
I think I think if I had to take a bet as far as like which team I think is gonna win I would
I would bet on the Dominican Republic their their lineup is just too good their pitching staff is
only okay um I think actually team USA probably is the best pitching staff maybe Japan um but
the that lineup is scary it's sick it's unfair uh very pumped uh the Mets are playing some exhibition
games almost as like a world baseball classic warm-up this week um tomorrow I think they play
Nicaragua so it'll be interesting because Mark Vientos will be playing against the Mets um and uh
and then they play team israel the next day after that so it'll be fun to get these like exhibition
games in before the actual um games start um not all of the games will be in like convenient time
zones for us that specifically the like Asian games uh that are in Japan won't be easy to watch
from an American time zone but oh the games based in America will be so
um get to watch I'm gonna be loading up on his overdosing on as much baseball as humanly possible
in the next couple weeks including going to florida first spring training which will be a future
walkoff win not right now nice um but yeah um but in the meantime we have uh we have multiple entries
uh in our I took the form of a 45 year old white man for a reason I can only fail up segment
this week um we almost we're almost like playing the hits as far as like organizations that
regularly show up in this segment um well if you're a shitty person you're gonna be continued
to be a shitty person I think that's the common thing yeah um so we we uh we just check in and not
check out yes real um we already talked about um last time on the show we talked about um David
Rubinstein uh uh head of the Carlisle group and uh Oriole new Oriole super billionaire owner um
being in the Epstein files uh not in any like openly criminal way where he like admits to doing
crimes but still you don't want to be in the Epstein files in any context um we already talked about
that uh but there's new uh stuff out about him uh via friend of the pod broad for William Davis
who in his uh newsletter iBlack he reported that David Rubinstein is um is among three uh three
different ownership groups um involved in uh the Trump administration's migrant detention plans
so Carl the the Carlisle group um Bradford figured out that uh that he he managed to trace
the Carlisle group to an LLC that sold a warehouse to the Department of Homeland Security for uh
the purposes of converting it to one of those migrant jails that they're making out of all they're
basically the Department of Homeland Security the concentration camp you know that you have
landed on the wrong side of all this of history um of everything of everything yeah for those of you
who haven't been following this uh the Department of Homeland Security is buying up a bunch of
warehouses that they're basically converting to concentration camps to hold migrants in um and
the and Bradford figured out that uh an LLC created by uh David Rubinstein's private equity firm
Carlisle group shares uh an address with the warehouse that DHS is converting into a migrant jail so
basically they sold DHS the warehouse in order to make it into a concentration camp so that's
not great um I mean is it the worst thing the Carlisle group has done I don't know no yes like
the Carlisle group has done lots of shitty things in its existence like no again if you just
if you look hard enough nobody gets this rich without doing some bad shit and the Carlisle group
is particularly bad um the bad that also does include your own favor billionaire so just never be
surprised by this but this is pretty bad like we're talking about concentration camps that's not good
um and I don't know is David Rubinstein personally like aware of every single thing the Carlisle
group is doing not necessarily but that doesn't mean that he escapes responsibility or like you know
for this like it's still his LLC it's his firm imagine being so rich that billions of dollars
could be poured into something that you didn't even want if he doesn't want it we try to
don't think that which I don't think is the case yeah like no that is just like a wild level of wealth
exactly like fires remorse of human lives so it's yeah and he's not he's not alone um like like
Bradford reported that he's one of um multiple teams um oh there's actually five now I think
there were only three before but I guess there's now five um that least Bradford has discovered in
his reporting that are involved in some level um like you know it might be indirect like this
is linked to this ownership group is linked to this company which is linked to the sale of this
however it's all connected because america is just three rich guys in a trench coat
the capitalism yeah um our next entry is another banger from arty marino one of our favorite
one of our favorite people on this segment this guy this fucking guy this fucking guy um he said
quote the number one thing fans want is affordability they want they want a good experience where
they come to the ballpark believe it or not winning is not in their top five
okay he's like they don't actually want you to win already marino the guy with his finger on the
pulse of the average fan so when does the affordability start yeah right it's not
so what is it to go to those days what is his time outside of winning
affordability well he's he listed three things affordability safety and a good experience when
they come to the ballpark we're three things because it'll touch and acts of service
because I said why was it winning number four on that was I I bet winning was was even higher
and I think he lost those survey responses I want to know I want to know what two other things
because he listed three things yeah it's like um it's like what's that meme with the uh with the
meal that they say is healthy and balanced in american it's like one other thing the case adea
and one or tortilla and one other thing like a chicken a piece of chicken a piece of broccoli
a corn tortilla and one other thing I lost what you think the one the two aren't marinos two
other things are that fans want affordability safety a good experience when they come to the ballpark
and one other it can't be super stars because he doesn't keep them he doesn't keep so it's not
the player it's not the player oh my god it's affordability a second time
oh my god it might be half they're actually they're worried about me
aren't marino the the way that's security he's worried about his security as an owner
yeah the way that I saw this quote um was via productive outs on on blue sky and the
caption the they they tweeted the screenshot uh of the quote and they captioned it team you ask
baseball franchise which is exactly like nails it right on the head that's correct if you like
squint and look at it from far away it does in fact look like a major league bit uh major league
baseball franchise but as soon as you're there up close and person you're like oh oh no
mm-hmm no if you're my trail why are you thinking when you hear that I don't know I got I got
at least I got paid I love baseball baseball is fun I love baseball I wonder what the weather forecast
is for next week look at the sky it's so pretty did the eagles win the Super Bowl
oh yeah so um in in other uh baseball franchises they're frequently featured on this segment um
the Texas Rangers the Texas Rangers who are as as you all know as listeners of this podcast now
famously the only team in baseball without a pride night um and our otherwise just
authoritarian ass vibes baseball franchise um recently uh tipping pitches our friends
of tipping pitches did a fantastic like a little episode a highly recommend listening to it where
they like basically took the four uh the four quadrant like political map where you have like
authoritarian uh libertarian on one axis and then you have economic left and economic right
and they mapped all the baseball teams onto that and the Texas Rangers were one of like four
teams that were all the way authoritarian along with like the Yankees the Cardinals and the Braves
and I was like yes correct correct the by the way yes by the way the Mets are libertarian left
which of course they are yes um yes um and all the teams that are like
libertarian right are all the like worst teams in baseball it's like the the a's and the pirates
it's like oh dear me um anyway but yeah Texas Rangers one of the most authoritarian vibe baseball teams
um they this is like this is like next level shit um there is a statue of a of a Texas Rangers
law enforcement figure um that you that was like honoring basically like guys who used to enforce
segregation oh and there's there's a statue that existed of like a Texas Ranger that used
to enforce this and it got taken down you know it used to exist where was it existing
chief chance Collins is who the statue is of um oh no sorry that's the person who unveiled
the statue I apologize um but yeah the the statue used to exist in like a park somewhere um
yeah prominently featured at love field which ones love field sorry I'm not familiar with my
Dallas dallas love field oh it's an airport
in the oh in public airport in the neighborhood of love field so I suppose it could have been
anywhere in that neighborhood so isn't a specific neighborhood anyway it used to be elsewhere
the statue and it got taken down because obviously it should be um yeah and the Rangers decided
we're going to put that in the left field concourse at globe life fields so that's where you're now
neat we recognize the history of the Texas Rangers like that of our state and nation includes
moments which must be confronted honestly was the quote but it's like okay yeah I get that
but like by putting a statue though like you can put like a little I would almost like
be okay if they put like a little plaque and be like but like make the statue of like
I'm sure there is some sort of civil rights activist that like resisted segregation and Dallas
that's a point that you could honor instead yeah but they don't like that's that's what they're
going for so what is the point of putting that at a ballpark I don't know like why is that
their appropriate location for it and the the quote goes on while not everyone who has served
across more than two centuries lived up to the ideal most did and they deserve to be remembered
for their service sacrifice and commitment to the people of Texas meaning the Texas Rangers
so this is a board member of the Texas Rangers Association Foundation who said that
yeah so like remember what Texas Rangers actually like stands for and like it is generally
the Texas Rangers as in like broadly Rangers law enforcement but like remember what the
Rangers what types of laws the Rangers once enforced yeah so yeah I just think it's really cool that
we we finally started making progress with getting a lot of these like statues taken down like in
in the south of the Confederate generals and shit and then they just like pop up other places
yep in a ballpark for example why not why not yeah so Texas Rangers not
but not high on my list of of baseball franchises that I enjoy
I mean I'll probably enjoy that oh I'm sure he does
oh yeah and he'll come and he'll come to any New York post reporter that will listen and tell
them because apparently that his new day job is if he like doesn't have a season to prepare for
is yapping to Mike Puma whenever he gets a chance is they've written the same story about him
like four times enough he's gone let it go let it go who cares at this point I think it was
just had an austro on for all you kids out there who said he's like the uh he's like that guy who
won't stop talking about his ex like so true like uh yeah enough like you have a new team now focus
on that yeah why are you talking about the Puma for like I just some like this is I didn't even put
it in the show notes even though like it generated a lot of discourse because like I don't I don't
care at this point like what why Brandon Mome made the decision that he made so yeah anyway um we
will end the show this week like we always do with walkoff wins where each of us talks about
something that is making us happy this week baseball related or otherwise Maggie Wiggin what is your
walkoff win for this week um this was originally going to be for last week but I forgot it was
a match the week week so I am saving it but my walkoff win for last week is the snow day um so the kids
like the you know the the schools went remote for for the last snow day back in January but like
you know a week ago when there was just a ton of unscheduled snow even more snow than last time like
almost two feet um city schools like straight up shut down not a remote day like a real snow day and the
kids just had like I mean they had mostly like just a lazy nothing day but then also like we went
out and went sledding and the whole neighborhood was there it was like I mean there was easily
100 kids on this one hill in the park and granted it is a great sledding hill so that's why they
were all there but it just was so much about like the neighborhood that I love and about the city
that I love and like you know it was like teenagers doing unwise things and everybody being grumpy at
them like all that good stuff that you get when kids can just be kids um it was beautiful snow it
was really good place snow which was fun too you could make like really packed snowballs people made
insane snowmen all over the place it was very very cool and it was just like an all together like
lovely like shared community kind of time I need the winter to end but I'm happy that your kids had
a good time I'm also happy that it started melting immediately like one last snow storm at least
there's that um Linda de Andrea what is your walkoff one for this week my walkoff one is also old
but we haven't been able to we yeah last week was the bench but my walkoff one is the Olympics
I'm sad they're over um but they were just it's always such a nice
release reprieve from the world for two weeks um this is I this is what I believe the world actually
is of people coming together and supporting each other and cheering each other on and it's just
always so heartwarming to see all the different athletes from all the different countries like
Amber Glenn sticking up for the Japanese skater who was crying and like telling the photographers to
get out of her face like little things like that um and because they they all know how hard it is
to be there and um what it takes to be an athlete in the Olympics and just seeing like some
own vials they're supporting them and it's just so wholesome and I'm always so sad when it's over
I always cry when the torch goes out and though that they lower the flag the Olympics flag and
the torch goes out and you know I miss being in my Olympics bubble for two weeks and then getting
slapped with the real world again but um but it's always it's always nice for two weeks till it's
root on while the athletes and hopefully we'll have an Olympics in two years in a way and hopefully
and baseball and theories will be a part of it so we'll see um but yeah I mean I I agree I do
think that this is that the Olympics are representative of what the world actually is as far as like
you're like average your average member of humanity uh the problem is is that the people in power
who wield all the levers levers of power aren't representative of your average member of humanity
and that's the problem um my walkoff win for this week uh is something that I think that
both Maggie and Linda are gonna see coming but it's uh that the spirit did their uh jersey reveal
so the NWSL uh all the teams got new kits uh this year soccer is different than baseball they
baseball is a very uh frumpy traditionalist sport and they don't change things all that often as far
as like the look and aesthetics like obviously the Yankees have literally worn the same uniform for
their entire existence so occurs a little different they were it's like every two years um so
they're changing their uniforms and they're aesthetic like all the time um which on one hand I love
it because there's always something fresh and new but on the other hand it's like all right well
my kit that I bought last year is already obsolete uh because they're replacing it with a different one
but that said the Washington spirit released their kits and they finally have a cherry blossom kit
oh my god we have been yeah everyone has been asking for cherry blossom kits for like five years
and they finally freaking did it oh I'm so happy because the spirit has has had like such lame
uniforms in their existence it's like this is just not DC like like at first they were like the
same uh at the beginning of their existence they were the same red white and blue as every other
DC team like the same color scheme is the national basically and the same boring uniforms um just like
with stars on them or whatever very very like america like I get it where the nation's capital but
like we're also so much more than that and then they changed their color scheme to be like black
and yellow and I was like how is this DC I like don't understand like it's weird um and their kits
were ugly because they were like highlighter yellow and I was like I don't like these at all um but
they finally finally have a cherry blossom kit and they're so pretty they're like dark green and pink
oh they're so nice I bought one immediately um so I'm just very hype that um the spirit finally
have a good kit like I I've been doing the like what other teams get good kits I've been doing
the like god I see what you have done for others like for like years now um and every other DC
team has had like like the spirit have released cherry blossom merch but it's never been like
official jerseys before um the way that the nationals have their beautiful cherry blossom city connect
which still remains my favorite obviously they uh those those are gone now and they have different
city connects now but like you know that still remains of all the city connects my absolute favorite
one I just love when the DC teams like lean into the cherry blossoms because it's that is DC like
unmistakably um so pretty and unique yes and so angry the nationals got rid of layers
I know I'm sad um but yeah the the the uh the spirit finally have a cherry blossom kit and I bought
one and I'm so happy um so yep that's my walk-off win um but yeah we're all excited for the world
