In an effort to drink more water or try that latest kombucha beverage,
0:07
are you putting your teeth at risk?
0:10
According to dental providers, sipping on sparkling water or guzzling lemon water
0:14
throughout the day can erode your dental enamel.
0:17
And once it's gone, you can't get it back.
0:21
Enamel is the thin outer layer of your teeth,
0:24
which provides protection to the sensitive inner layers.
0:27
It's known as the hardest substance in the human body,
0:30
but that doesn't mean it's indestructible.
0:33
In fact, it can be damaged by bacteria and everyday wear and tear on your teeth.
0:38
Unfortunately, enamel does not regenerate.
0:41
Enamel loss is permanent, and unlike other tissues in the body,
0:45
it doesn't come back after it's gone.
0:47
Enamel erosion happens when acids soften and dissolve the mineral surface of teeth.
0:52
Sugary soft drinks in sodas are easily recognized as drinks which wear down enamel,
0:57
but there are some newer culprits as well.
0:59
Lemon water, kombucha, sports drinks, apple cider vinegar, tonics,
1:04
and even flavored sparkling water.
1:07
Many of these drinks are below the pH threshold of 5.5,
1:11
and many of us sip those drinks all day long.
1:14
That's when enamel begins to degenerate.
1:17
So how do you know if you have damaged your tooth enamel?
1:20
Here are some early warning signs.
1:22
Your teeth are more sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet food and drink.
1:27
Your teeth have rough or uneven edges and small dents on chewing surfaces.
1:32
Your teeth appear more yellow.
1:34
Sometimes teeth are more prone to chipping.
1:37
While your teeth cannot regrow enamel,
1:39
there are steps you can take to protect the surface of your teeth.
1:43
Limit how often you drink acidic beverages.
1:46
Drink through a straw to reduce the beverages contact with your teeth.
1:49
Rinse with water after drinking or eating acidic items.
1:53
Don't brush immediately after acidic exposure.
1:56
But you don't have to cut out these drinks completely.
2:01
Try drinking them with meals and prioritize regular preventive dental visits.
2:06
When you do brush, use fluoride toothpaste
2:09
as it can increase tooth enamel's resistance to wear and tear.
2:12
And take caution if you whiten your teeth.
2:15
There are some over-the-counter whiteners
2:16
which can increase tooth sensitivity, especially if misused.
2:21
Professional whitening under dental supervision is recommended.
2:25
While protecting your tooth enamel means preserving a bright smile,
2:29
it also means protecting your long-term oral health.
