I'm Linda Lopez, and here are today's top local stories. Activists, journalists, and feminist icon Glorious Steinem has died. Her foundation says she passed away at her home yesterday here in New York City. Steinem was a fierce advocate for women's causes, and also co-founded Ms. Magazine, as well as several organizations. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Obama in 2013. Steinem was an active speaker for the women's movement, even in recent years. She spoke on January 21, 2017, on President Trump's first full day in office, speaking at the women's march in Washington, D.C.

2:03Sometimes we must put our bodies where our beliefs are. Sometimes pressing send is not enough. Glorious Steinem was 92 years old, over on the Upper East Side, Steinem's death is being felt right outside her front door, neighbors, and people passing by her home, stopping to remember the feminist icon. On Glorious Steinem's block, people are stopping, looking over, and taking in the news. Hard to me feel really sad, however, I think our legacy will live on. A bouquet now sits outside her home. We lost somebody who had a voice for women. Catherine lives on the same block and says Steinem has been one of her heroes. Everybody wants to take, take, take, take, take, take, and she gave, gave, gave, gave, gave. Others walking by say they were shocked to hear she died. Very sad. I can't talk. I'm so emotional. For this neighborhood, Steinem wasn't just a national figure. She was also a familiar face. I actually spoke to her once because she's had an amazing impact on society.

A string of muggings in Queens police have linked three men to ten robberies in and around Jamaica during the last month, and one of the victims was only 14 years old. Some of the suspects displayed, or simulated, having weapons, while demanding cash, phones, and wallets, really anything they can get their hands on. In one case, a 69-year-old man was robbed of a necklace and a ring that was worth about $3,000. None of the victims were seriously hurt, some did suffer minor injuries. The NYPD has posted photos of those suspects on social media. Ahead of the 25th commemoration of 9-11, the city is putting $1 million into helping the next generation never forgets. The money will fund an educational program with the 9-11 Memorial and Museum. Counsel Speaker Julie Menon says in many ways it'll help students understand the significance of that day and its lasting impact.

4:08Part of our funding goes to virtual tours. Part of the funding goes to teaching materials so that teachers have those additional materials as to how to teach about 9-11. So it's really expanding the educational curriculum of the 9-11 Memorial Museum. The announcement will be followed by a wreath-lang ceremony this hour honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks. To the officers and the civilian were injured in a crash involving a police car this morning. It happened around 8 o'clock near West 124th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem. All three were hospitalized, the cops with moderate injuries, the civilian minor, so far no word on what led to that crash. The MTA Inspector General is out with an audit, shining light on some scary sister-in-law. Scary system-wide failures. This audit coming following a transformer explosion at Brooklyn's State Street substation in December of 2024 where 4,000 riders were shredded for two hours.

5:10The audit coming on to say they found serious concerns in gaps in New York City transits, substation maintenance program. Random checks system-wide finding that fire alarms warning signals were routinely ignored and work crews skipped 19% of required maintenance checks that year. Now in response to this report, New York City Transit President Dmitriy Krizlo saying that missed inspections of power stations are unacceptable and leadership of the power division has been restructured. Glenn Shock, 1010 wins, 92-3 FM. Battery swapping might be the key to making e-bikes safer and cheaper. The idea is simple. Instead of charging e-bike batteries at home, riders swap out a dead battery for a fully charged certified one at an outdoor station. Pop wheels actually did a study on it. In the survey of 133 city delivery workers, 85% said they were earning more after switching to battery swapping

6:12while nearly three-quarters said they were spending the same or less on batteries. Some city council members like Lincoln Ressler want to see that kind of infrastructure expanded across the city. The NYPD says that major crimes were down in August and Commissioner Deskattish is calling this summer the safest on record. Police data says that the city recorded 724 fewer major crimes in August compared to August of last year, with shootings falling nearly 21%. From June through August, the city recorded 195 shooting incidents, 249 shooting victims, and 66 murders. And the NYPD says those are all record lows for that period. But not all crime categories declined. Velenia salts were up nearly 1% year to date. Reported rapes increased 3.2%, confirmed hate crimes also rose 15.8%. Police have released new images of the man wanted for sexually assaulting a woman in South Slope Brooklyn.

7:13Very clear surveillance images have now been released by the NYPD of the guy they're looking for. Last seen wearing a 10 baseball cap, and the number 3 on it, yet on a black shirt, grey shorts, and black and white sneakers. Police in the 72nd precinct say they want to talk to him and in connection with this sexual attack that happened at 3 in the morning Saturday in Parks Lope, along 15th street. As the 38-year-old victim was standing alone suddenly pushed to the ground from behind, sexually attacked, the suspect then running off in about a minute. Police tell us the victim was not hospitalized as a result of the incident, and they want the public's help. Crime stoppers the number if you know anything, 80577 tips. Glenn Schuck, 1010 wins, 92-3 at them. The city is going to miss its federally mandated deadline to close Rikers Island a year from now. So the city council, working on extending that deadline. We're just at the beginning of knowing we won't get to the end on time. Councilmember Sandy Nurse is getting to work on legislation to extend the deadline to close Rikers. We want to create a system where we have a very different culture.

8:15We don't want to have people die in our city custody for lack of medical care. She says city hall has been cooperative. A big reason the city will miss the deadline is COVID construction delays, but also Nurse says. The previous administration's failure to do proper investments and programming.
