The Chuck Nolshow with Myron Coat is presented by Heritage Federal Savings and Own Association, where modern savers are new, higher interest through continuous daily compounding.
Well Chuck, we're into the championship game today, the American Conference Championship game and two of the big stars in the game are Mary Zonka and Franco Harris. Two big runners. How do you compare those two guys? Well, I think they're just a little different in their style. I think Zonka is surely the power runner. The guy that is going to lower in there and run over somebody every time. I think Franco has the ability to do that and also the ability to make people miss and has the all the way threat. Well, what you're saying is Franco has the quality of elusiveness and I guess he's a faster guy than Zonka, isn't he? That's right. But what about on the blocking side? Who's the better blocker? Well, Zonka is an extremely fine blocker. He's like having a guard in the backfield. He does a great job on stuff, especially wide plays or lead plays up through which they like to run and they give the ball a mercury morose, either wide with him leading and also open. He's got to be a big reason for Mercury's making it this year, right?
Well, Mercury is a fine runner also. It's tough to give the credit to one man on that type of thing. They have a fine blocking line, a fine blocking back and I think Mercury has some great elusiveness. Well, now, Don Schoer will spell Mercury with Jim Kick as I would imagine. He will as he has done in recent weeks. Really? Who would you rather see in there kicker or mercury morose? Well, I think he does that mostly in passing situations. I think they do that more for past protection reasons than for any other because we've checked out Mercury. He catches the ball pretty well. He runs fine patterns and Kick does the same thing. But I think they probably make that switch then in the last game against Cleveland. I think the reason they were spelling and are using Kick a lot more was because of the ankle injury that Mercury suffered a week earlier. The check-knall show will continue in a moment. Chuck Cleveland gave the Miami Dolphins considerable trouble last week.
What do you think was Miami not up for that game or are they not playing their game or was that a good representation of what they're capable of? I think, you know, Cleveland's probably an underrated football team. Cleveland has played well as 110 games in the league and is a fine football team. I think Cleveland had a lot to prove on that particular Sunday. So they had the blood flowing pretty good and they played a fine defensive football game. Of course, I have a lot of respect for the dolphins. I think they have a lot of weapons offensively and then defensively they've done just what I think is a magnificent job with some people injured in their defensive line. They've gone with a three-man line with an extra linebacker and they've mixed things up a little bit. They send one linebacker one time another linebacker another time to end up in a four-man rush. Sometimes they'll they'll go with a prevent type defense with a three-man rush and they give me enough change and
they've turned what might have been a shortcoming or a weakness into rather a strength. Yeah, but I would think that some of the defense like that might make your mouth water that that sounds exploitable. Well, we have that's one of the things we're going to have to do. We're going to have to be able to move the football on that particular defense and it's going to take a lot of awareness on our offenses part to know exactly what they're going to do and how they shift people around and what they do from those situations. Well, if you're talking about a three-man rush, it would seem to me that it would tempt you to throw the ball put the ball in the air more. Well, they have an extra man back and they have come up with a lot of intersections this year. Secret to their defense, people have been able to move the football on them, but they make the mistake against them and that's always been fatal. They throw the intersection or come up with a fumble. So one of the things we're going to have to do this week is to avoid that kind of mistake.
Oh, I have a final question for coach. No, after this message. Well, Chuck, what do you think will be the pattern of the Miami offense today? Will it be a running game? Will it be a throwing game? They're mostly a running team. Are they not? No question about it. That's what they want to do. That's their strengths and I think the dolphins have done an outstanding job in just showing their strengths and of course, their strength is running the football, giving it to Larry Zonka and Power plays and mixing their other two running backs enough that they can get mercury outside or inside and Jim Kick who also is a power runner and a fine pass protector. They throw the ball really very little and maybe 17 times a ballgame would be their high. They haven't thrown the ball very much. They would rather get ahead, play a head football and control the ball offensively with a running game. I really don't think they want to get involved in a passing attack where they come back here and have to throw
on every down. I don't think they're necessarily suited to that type of thing. They're more suited to the running game and defensively, of course, they keep the ball away from the other teams with their possession offense and then their defense has been able to come up with a ball through mistakes, through interceptions and fumbles and of course, their defense hasn't been in the ball game very much. So what we'd like to do is make their defense play a lot of course and come up with football ourselves defensively. When our last year Mel Blunt got burned by Paul Warfield, do you suppose is that a concern for you going into this game? I think Mel Blunt's having his finest year this year and his playing outstanding football and is a much more aware football player right now than he was last year and we're looking for different situations. Briefly, how do you compare the line backers of the two teams? I think, you know, Barnacorn is not a very big guy. He's their middle
line backer. I kind of think I might like to have Henry Davis over. Barnacorn has played well for a long time with a lot of detractors who said he wasn't been playing professional football. I think the thing that made Nick a fine football player in the league is his just his all out of aggressiveness. I think that something that Henry Davis has also. Neither one have the great size but they have the aggressiveness and the instinct for the football. Well good luck to you today Chuck and that concludes the Chuck Noel Show for now. This is My Ring Tope. It's time for the Steelers pregame show brought to you today by Sears where you'll find fantastic store-wide savings during their month-long January big sale. Sears where you're somebody special. We say hello again everyone from three River Stadium Jack Fleming along with Tom Bender and Myron Cole. This afternoon, play by play coverage of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphin
for the championship of the American football conference. To say that we have a beautiful day for football is putting in mildly. The temperature stands at 67 degrees. The weatherman is smiling on the steel city and this crowd is sell out proportion standing room only and down below the tension is beginning to build for the kickoff of this afternoon's game. The signs are infrecusious. Later on Myron Cole will read each and every one of them for you but right now it was suffice to say that many of the signs are aimed at a fellow named Howard Cocelle who during this past week indicated the Steelers should not be here today but you know and I know they should be here and it all happened a week ago yesterday on this same turf. The ball game, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Oakland Raiders and Pittsburgh clinging to a six-nothing lead. The late stages of the game Kenny Stabler had directed an attack that had moved his ball club to the Pittsburgh 30. Their olemonica had been unable to do that all afternoon but Stabler the
young quarterback from Alabama did and that's at the stage at the 30-yard line for this play. Minute 22. Stabler back against Shumbles runs out of the pocket. Stabler's running with a football down to the 20th. The town Sabler is going for an open touchdown. He's into the end zone. Stabler rolling out the left kept the football. The Pittsburgh defense covering downfield against the pass as Kenny Stabler rolled out all the way to the left and goes 30 yards for an open touchdown and goes in with a minute 13 on the clock. That made it 6-6. George Blanda added the point. It was the 7-6 ball game and not too much time in which you operate. But Terry Bredshaw went to work. But at that point it was 4th down and 10 yards to go. 1-2-2 seconds remaining. And Bredshaw is back and looking again. Bredshaw running out of the pocket. Looking for somebody to throw to fires it downfield and there's a collision. And it's cut out of here. The ball is pulled in. I think I'll hear it. Here's the strike for a touchdown for this player. Here's the strike. 5 seconds. That's another clock. Here's pulled in the football. I don't even know where it came from. He'll call was in the collision. There are people in the end zone.
Where did he come from? Was the ball cut? That seemed to be the big question. Where did he come from? Actually the photo showed later that he came straight down to. He'll picked off the football at the 42 yard line. We didn't see him with it until the 35 yard line. As he ran down in the near sideline as a partial announcer I was thinking to myself step out of bounds, step out of bounds before the clock runs out. But the game's new hero. One of the finest one on one men in the country today continued to go and came into the end zone just a step inside the flag for the touchdown that won the football game for the Steelers. We'll take a look at some other pregame highlights in a moment. Afternoon's opponent, Damiami Dauphin, at 115 games in a row, 14 in the regular season. And one postseason game and in so doing have established an NFL record for a single season.
Good offense have been tough, a great running attack this year. The key man, a fellow by the name of Zaka out of Syracuse and Mercury Morris, spent most of the last year on the specialty teams. Backed up by Jim Kick, who was a part of that great running duo of just a year ago. And with that, a passing attack that features a fellow by the name of Paul Warfield. He went to Miami from Cleveland and one of the great Steels the recent years. So there is solid opposition out here today. Miami lead to the all time series one nothing. Having won a regular season game 24-21 in 1971, you may recall, Steelers led that game 21-3 and half time. Dauphin's also took a preseason game at Jacksonville, 16-10-1970. That was Don Schulis' first game as the Miami coach. Well, Marin, I would say we have a most festive atmosphere this afternoon. One that is Ken's with just a touch of electricity. And these signs are something else.
You can tell us about your guerrillas. They sure are these signs are something else. And the guerrillas have been called instructions great. And the key sign is the one that says, Hey, Garo Penigo. Now, your premier, of course, is from the out of Cyprus. And Penigo means Chokes in Greek. So you'll know what that means. But I'm worried about that sign because there's so many banners hanging around it. It's that it kind of hides the key sign, which is, Hey, Garo Penigo. And Garo may not see it. So I wish they'd get some of those banners around the guerrillas sign sign. I wish they'd take some of them in. How about it, Guerrillas? You going to do it? All right. We'll see what happens. Now, you know, the enthusiasm is just great. I got a letter from a lady named Mrs. Elizabeth Embers, and in St. Clair West, Virginia, she said she went to a pet store and traded in two inches in cash for a mine of bird, and taught the mine of birds to say, Go Silver. So I wrote her back and I said, That's no minor accomplishment. Oh, oh, I got a poem. Let me follow over. Okay, read your
poem. Can I get my poem in? It says, they're called the Miami Dolphins, and you can serve them up on a dish. Because when the dealers are finished feeding them, those dolphins will be just a lot of dead fish. In the meantime, the entertainment continues. I'll appeal with an oratill's high school band in the pregame show. And we'll have some final comments, no more poetry, but some final comments on today's game after this message. Game time approaching. Here at the stadium, and the crowd is pretty well into its respective seats. Now, below the members of Franco's Italian army began to stand in place as the anticipates the appearance of the dealers out on the field. Gerollas guerrillas are in their own particular position off behind the goalpost to our left. And Marin, you've had an opportunity to observe a city in frenzy this week, and it's been a great week, hasn't it? Well, I'm sure it has. And yesterday, Franco's Italian army swung into action
and carried out a successful air raid on the William Fenn hotel where the dolphins were staying. What the army did was they sent a height plane over the hotel and they dropped 2,000 leaflets that were headed surrender. And the leaflet said, this leaflet will guarantee any member of the Miami Dolphin's safe passage out of town if presented to a member of Franco's Italian army. It went on to say, bend your remaining ears with your loved ones instead of meeting destruction on the field of battle. But what happened? It was a real Italian army raid. One leaflet fell on the hotel and the others flew all over time. And that concludes the Steelers pregame show for this afternoon. Here at 3 River Stadium, this is Jack Fleming. Steelers. Hello again, everyone. From 3 River Stadium, Jack Fleming with Myron Co. and Tom Bender. And this afternoon, we have the American Football Conference Championship game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphin, the other in Pittsburgh
perfect, sun shining through broken clouds above. I believe we have reported the temperature at 6.7, a slight exaggeration at 6.3 degrees. How do you like that on December 31? And this afternoon, the weatherman says it should stay very nice throughout this entire ballgame. About the time the game ends, the temperature should begin to fall off and some more cold weather will come into the city. But the dolphins have to feel slightly at home today on the fine artificial turf of 3 River Stadium in just perfect football while they're both for players and spectators. Miami Dolphins have won the toss, they elect to receive, and they're just reappearing from the dressing room out on the field, wearing the white uniforms trimmed in green and a rather bright orange type red, sort of a Miami red, so to speak. The Steelers will come out from the door at the opposite side to the end of the field to our left. Offensively from Miami, Paul Warfield, the nine-year veteran, who went from Cleveland down to Miami out of Ohio State will start as a wide receiver.
They're left tackle wing more, three are veteran from Lamar Tech. The left guard's off to converse from Notre Dame. The center Jim Ranger, he's out to put a space. The right guard, Larry Little, from the zoom focus. Here come the Steelers, the crowd standing, 50,000 standing, and a face for the hometown ball glove. In Black Jersey, white numeral, gold pants for the Black Strike. More Mevans, eight-year veteran from TCU, goes to right tackle, and their tight end is more plumbing, a 10-year NFL veteran from Utah. Earl Morrell will draw the starting assignment at quarterback. His 17th year in the league got a Michigan State. The running back, Mercury Morris, by 10-1-90, fourth year in the league from West Texas State. Larry Zucka, at 6'2-237 pounds, in his fifth year from Syracuse. Howard Twully, wide receiver, seven-year veteran from Tulsa. Well, the Pittsburgh Steelers defensively this afternoon,
here's the way they'll go. At left end, LC Green wanted 6'6-2-45 from Arkansas A&M. Joe Green at left tackle, 6'4-2-75 from North Texas State. Ben McGee, the nine-year veteran from Jackson, State of Right Tackle, 6'3-2-60, and white-quite in his second year in the league 6'4-2-55 from East Texas State. The linebackers Jack Ham, second-year man from Penn State on the left side, Henry Davis, Sinna Middle, and the Russell, eight-year veteran from Missouri, at the right linebacker post. In the secondary, Johnny Rouser, the left cornerback, Mill Blunt, the right cornerback, 6'3-6-2-5 as recovered from that knee injury. And as that one safety position, Mike Wagner, the great second-year safety from Western Illinois, at the other. Last week, Myron Cope, Mike Wagner's parents were here, and they had an opportunity to watch their son in action, and the reporters in Chicago, and he is a Chicago boy, who were so enthused over the situation
that they came back and interviewed the Wagner's, and found out that Mike had grown up as a Chicago barra fan, but very luckily for him, he has changed his allegiance to the Steelers, and he's one of the good ones, one of the fine-wins, in the golden black uniform today. Well, I would say that that's an example of a misspent use, but hey, Jack! Shop the Sirwin Williams Fall sale and get 35% off paints and stains, the 15th to the 21st, with prices starting at 29.86. I think there's a possibility Glen Edwards will start at safety, not six-anders, since Nick's knee is not kept top of it yet, so I think you'll have Edwards there.
You know, the big battle today, right here on his feet, holler, and deep fence, deep fence, and some kind of thing. But the big battle today will be in the line there where Joe Green goes against Larry Little. Listen to this crowd, it's something with the electric here, very significant things to do with individuals going down in the street, cause of all the excitement, but Joe Green was saved in the FBI so line-minute this year, and the guy who's been in second in the ballroom, he was very little, and his so insistence would have a near-up against one another head to head today, so jack that ought to be some kind of battle in this friendship. You know, Chuck Caw had a press conference the other day with all the advanced colliders starting coming in, and somebody asked him, and Chuck, you think, please, he'll play on Chuck's. The answer was I hope so, meaning that if they have to get crazy and things have gone bad for them with war,
so who knows, we'll see what happens. The civil offensive linemen are now healthy, they've been popping around out there for three weeks now, but today they're healthy. And of course, the main weakness of the civilers' habits is very shallow at wide receiver, because they really have just one threat there in Franklin, Frank Lewis being out for the year, and if there was anything that would really worry you about today's game, other than the dolphins themselves, it would be that weakness of wide receiver. Don't you think it's ironic that we wind up weak at that position after being so strong there, at the beginning of the year, and we move John Stagger's over to Green Bay, send Dave Smith down to Houston and then find ourselves coming up short. Yeah, well, you know, it's such a long season, Charvacara, and the Miami-Fobusa said to me the other day, he used to be with Notre Dame, and he said, you know, this will be our 22nd game, he said, that's almost two and a third Notre Dame season. So you just run out of men, that's all there is to it,
but that's why they have half-squads. Well, the dolphins are sending four men out as their co-captains, quadruple captains, to meet with Sam Davis and Andy Russell, and we have the symbolic cross of the coin. They shake hands, and the Steelers are on the air side of the field, the dolphins are to the far side, over there is a little ball-headed guy. He wears number one, I believe, that's a number one on Gero Yopramian, a genuine Cypria, who says that he is not getting the publicity he deserves this year, but he will kick well the day he promised him. He's going to Panigo. Now here is our national anthem.
Applaud. That ride is 2. Some've lost quality, but it Gesetzentw give to me clean this car.... Beautifully done An ice-to-lasom again led by the Vogue Who brought us good luck last week very fine group of young man And I'll repeat again their favorite record I still think the one they made called kill Here they come to Miami-Dawp and the Steelers are on the field first
Roy Girella will tee up the ball at the 40-yard line and fifth bird will kick off from right to left Miami Ready to set up To receive the kickoff from Roy Girella we still can't tell exactly who they're going to send deep Setting their screen up their blocking screen at the 50 yard line And they're going deep with mercury Morris and Charlie Lee Mercury Morris and Charlie Lee with Morris to the left and lead to the right of the kicker And when you talk about mercury Morris you're talking about some kind of a runner 14 returns 334 yards on the season All the speed up Roy Girella will kick off of the Steelers All right here comes Girella and he kicks it
Very very high coming down to Laura C.R. deepening in zone scumbles comes out of the five to the 10 to 15 Tipped dive double the 20 goes to the 22 yard line Morris probably was hit first by Ed Bradley And Lauren Benchman was on the play Thanks to activated public Paul again Went down to the tap squad all the spotted after a 21 yard line first 10 yards to go And it often on offense will move from left to right Out of the huddle Sending Howard Trilley out to the right the ends are tight Running back They're starting Jim jick is a running back hand off the Zaka Zaka running the left Just got the way through some call about three yards Zaka hit by Andy Russell initially broke away from him hit by Henry Davis and Glenn Edwards and he picked up about three yards to the 24 yard line If here to be stopped for no gain whatsoever. Yes, right white was in there very quickly
And had a piece of his right but just couldn't hang on and of course Zaka runs away from a lot of people eight power Elmer to remorse is in the backfield and they line up in the eye formation with Morris at the top of the eye Sending Howard Trilley out to the right side the ends are tight calling the signals are all moral I'll take another take Then puts the pass in the last To the left side after two-fake Dumbled as he started forward McGee nailed him at the 18 yard line a loss of six yards Yes, it was a face of an answer Ryan the warfield and Not very Except the Steelers were full to fit they were waiting for the For mercury more as when he got to ball says the Steelers off to a good start here on defense as the dolphins come up to third Well Henry Davis out of the line up Glenn Edwards and Ralph Anderson are both in that backfield Jim kick into the backfield for Miami in the pass into the left flat area
Cut the tight end Not got a bounce on the far side of the field of the 23 yard line by Mel Blunt right down on the plane Jim Mandage Line up that tight end Running to the left took the pass when out of bounds knocked out at the 23 yard line as Mel Blunt hitting A flag is down And we have a penalty against the Steelers preliminary sign will be Defensive holding Let's check and see now they're coming back to the original spot the 23 yard line It is not holding is the 15 yard job original foul It's the first no foul foul against the Steelers right and that would have to be Roughly 15 yard penalty moves it to the 38 yard line and the first down for Miami
So that often get the initial break out of all game Steelers have them stop first down 10 at their own 38 yard line And the handoff straight ahead Zaka pile driving into the middle comes over the 48 of the 41 yard line Runs into Ben McGee and Henry Davis very Zaka at 62 237 pounds is a five-year veteran from Syracuse and Zaka As rush for 1117 yards thus far averaging 5.2 for Kerry The ball is being spotted at the 41 yard line again at three yard second and seven I'm not sure who committed that personal foul, but I will expect you I don't earn in a moment as soon as his play is All right, they set twully up to the right with the ends kite. They're in the eye formation Merke remorse dots the eye the quarterback is Earl Morrell and Morrell gives inside to Zaka pile driving through the middle out over The 45 to the 46 yard line Joe Green and Henry Davis will get credit for the stop and Zaka
Moves the football to the Miami 46 yard line and on third down they'll face third and two On that personal file I did see white white club to left tackle more, but I said it was illegal blow So I'm not Hitting the rap on white white, but it's just a little speculation. Maybe he was the guy They're alternating mercury Mars and Jim Kick on every play thus far sending Paul Warfield to the left bringing Howard Twully to the right and here's Morrell throwing up to the left of ball pulled into the 49 yard line By Mara Fleming Cross of the 50 and has written out a bounce on the far side at the stealer 49 yard line Mel Blunt Covering the play defensively for the Steelers as the dolphins moved to a first down at the Pittsburgh 49 yard line Second pass for Morrell two of them completed Miami second first down the Steelers had them stop dead But a 15 yard penalty on the personal foul gave them new life and now they've advanced into stealer territory at the 49 yard line
Jim Langer comes out of the huddle goes over the football Paul Warfield splits left blanking right as Howard Twully from the eye formation Earl Morrell goes back deep look gets the pass away downfield intercepted at the 25 grand-enders back out of the 40 to 45 to 50 to the Miami 49 yard line Inwards came up with the intercepted out of pass and send it for Jim Kick Howard Twully was the intended receiver. Let's correct that and Edwards moved in front of him to take that ball up to 25 yard line and Coming back up field cross the 50 brought down at the Miami 48 The Edward second interception of the season first down 10 Pittsburgh at the Miami 48 yard line Shifting Frank O Harris a step to the right red jaw giving to Harris running off right tackle driving over the 45
Miami 41 yard line Many Fernandez made the stop for 6 2 250 pounder as Frank O hits off the right side moves the ball to the 41 yard line where it is going to be second down and about three Burn Den Herder is the defensive left end Fernandez at left tackle by the Hines at right tackle Bill Stanford right end Doug Swift Nick Bonacone and Mike Collin are the linebackers Second down three yards to go for the Steelers Brad Shaw with his flanker set out to the right side splits an end to the left Brad Shaw on the inside hand off the Franco running to the left cuts over the 40 out of the 35 Right to the Miami 32 yard line for his tackle by Curtis Johnson Frank O Harris found running room off the left side hesitated that the line is skimming Went through the hole and shot down over the 35 to the Miami 31 and a half yard line first down As well again Bruce Bansite pulling out of the line to block for Franco
He hasn't been able to do that for weeks those guards are well Run Shaiklin wide right Al Young split left Shifting Franco in behind Jerry Bradshaw Miami with a five man front to hand off to Franco's great to the middle Child right down to the 27 yard line Franco Harris is the weapon the tackle made by Bern Genharder the six six two hundred fifty pound defensive end made it by many Fernando's again of five yards on the play second down five Frank has carried it every time and he's moving today He looks like he's in for a big ball game Miami digs in in a fourth three Pulling a linebacker Doug Swift up it looks as though they are flip-flopping their linebackers. He comes up on the right side Second down five Bradshaw giving to Franco again, and he's Hullard at the line of scrimmy hitting off the right side and right there to meet him was Bonacone the middle linebacker 5-112 120 pounder from Notre Dame no gain on the plate is going to be third down and five
So the Steelers come up against their first third down play on the afternoon Third down and five yards to go Mike Cole and out Bob Matheson in that right side linebacker for Miami Third down five Terry Bradshaw calling the signals for the Steelers and Bradshaw is using a long count And Miami hops across Miami makes contact now what will the rolling be against the Steelers or against it often Visuals come into confer and they will give us their decision in a moment There comes the signal against Miami in approach Miami jumped the signal came across and the dolphins will be charged with encroachment This will be very very close to a first down Yes, they infield the right defensive bend with the guy who's just across the line just a few hits
Bradshaw using the long count is being filled well for it. He couldn't contain himself First down for the Steelers of all the Miami 21 and a half yard line Colin comes back on the field replacing Matheson And they line up Curtis Johnson is giving out young some room as he splits out to the left Plankaritis Ron Shanklin first down ten yards to go Bradshaw sets them quarterback sneak Bradshaw diving across the 20 Goes to the 18 but Miami was waiting bonacani and Colin Dannelly made it by Bob Hines and they throw him back. He makes it to the 18 yard line. He'll pick up about three yards on the play It's going to be second down and seven yards to go Bradshaw electing to sneak that time on a dive through the middle Well, he has been known to catch teams by surprise with that play It seems like a strange quite used but he has broken through there at times 730 to play in the first quarter no scoring the ball game the Steelers have to Miami 18 yard line second down seven yards to go
Terry Brudge Bradshaw facing a five man front quick pitch to Franco Harris to the right cuts over the 15 and Goes down for 13 yard line Burned in herder reached out and cut him as he crossed the 15 yard line Helped out on the play by Doug Swift the left side linebacker and the ball is spotted at the 13 yard line It will bring up the third down play with two yards to go the old Cleveland flip play You know that quick pitch out there and it when Franco's ruined he stopped to bring down and Franco turned a power on They're down and two for the Steelers at the Miami 13 yard line Using two tight ends Jerry Mullins on one side John McMacon on the other all young tight on the right side of the line and The handoff goes to Johnny Tuqua diving to the middle fighting his way forward And he may have the first down he's down to the 11 yard line Doug Swift making the stop Toot for that time like a submarine
Driving through there knocking men out of the way and it's the first down pitch bird at the 11 yard line Steelers have a first down 10 at the Miami 11 and again they continued to alternate Mike Poland and Bob Mappison Don Shula the Miami coach one of the most the stoop young man in the game of pro football today Pacing Chattano another various two young man who once served as an assistant to Shula at Baltimore The tight formation for the Steelers without young pulled in as a flanker very close in a wing position on the right side in the handoff Goes to Franco pushing blockers out of the way cutting running to the left driving along the ten and down to the eight yard line Franco Harris needing running room to the left at time Bonacone and Mike Poland caught him as he crossed the ten yard line and moved the football down inside the nine And the big scum is spotted at the eight and a half yard line the Steelers again picked up three yards on the play It's going to be second down and seven yards to go for a first down with the ball at the Miami 8
Franco now has 30 yards rushing for the afternoon Yep, Frank looks like he's on his way to a hundred yard game, but let's keep our fingers brought 23 yards in from the near side of the field they set up against tight Two tight ends quick pitch to the right side Frank over the blocker cuts outside goes to the five Real out of bounds to the Miami three yard line Time blocked at time for Franco thrown by Gordon Revelle Running out to the right side Give him the running room he needed to take the ball to the three yard line Where it is going to be third down now and two yards to go for a first down three yards for a touchdown Revelle flat and corner backed him foley and I really thought That Franco would make it into the end zone that that's what different clear sailing Are at the three yard line third down no scoring the ball game 437 to go in the first quarter on a turning clock three rubber stadium in Pittsburgh 65 degree afternoon and the Steelers line up at the Miami 3 Bradshaw calling the signals
Facing a stacked up Miami defense in the front line Takes the handoff rolls out to left gets a block red So put his head down fumbles the football in the end zone recovered by jitter bird And it's a touchdown to ball recover by Jerry Mullins in the end zone Bradshaw rolling out to left hit Pumble the football end of the end zone Now let's see what the rolling will be There is a player her they have singled to touchdown Man was Bradshaw heard on the play we're screened off from the injured player And That is Terry Bradshaw Shaking up on the play as he lost the football fumbled it into the end zone We're Gordon Revelle Or rather Jerry Mullins recovered for the touchdown and Bradshaw Not groggy coming out the field Health dog by Ralph Berlin and Bob Miley
Jake Scott made the defensive play on Bradshaw So the Steelers recover for the touchdown and now Roy Gerella will try for the point after Hold her Bobby Walden the ball is down bobbled momentarily on a bad staff Gerella kicks a good with time out on the field the score fits bird seven Miami nothing Very Bradshaw and a rollout to the left side hit by Jake Scott It's solidly Bumble the ball into the end zone recovered by Jerry Mullins for the touchdown Gerella adds the point the drive carried 48 yards And it went to a look ten plays as the Steelers go in for the first score the afternoon Bradshaw is shaking it off down in front of the bench Ralph Berlin talks to him Terry Hanratty talks to him and Terry B is going to be okay the big guy from Louisiana is all right Well, it's up so apparently he got a blow to the head But you know check knows that Terry Hanratty was throwing the ball just great in practice this week
So if he has to go in there it may work out all right anyhow We have Mercury Morris and Charlie Lee deep for the Miami dolphins and Gerella kicks off for the second time This afternoon a quick good log high mercury Morris five yards deep in the end zone will take it for the touchdown Mercury Morris Field of the ball for the touchdown and the Miami dolphins will put it in play at the 20 yard line as this crowd a gigantic crowd of over 50,000 chance Defense yes the Terry Bradshaw now seems to be lucid Dineries conversing with some of the players so he was on Dream Street he's out of it now he appears to be what did you say lucid Lucid Well you are something else The dolphins at their own 20 year old moral the quarterback and the players Constable and his crew is moral handing off to mercury Morris and he dies into the middle Henry Davis was there to Medium no where to go He leans forward for about a foot And Mercury Morris stopped at the bottom of the thermometer that time the mercury was not climbing
So everything has just been going Dandy for the Steelers first an interception and a bumble that becomes a touchdown and the defense is Stopped in the dolphins and we're off to a good start Ernie Holmes replaces Ben the gate offensive Right tackle for the Steelers They send power to the right hall or field of the left better and her own moral is the quarterback Moral on the long count takes hands off to the left side mercury Morris great ahead He makes it to the 23 and he's gangtackled Ernie Holmes says The 23 and he's gangtackled Ernie Holmes at the bottom of the play for Pittsburgh And mercury Morris ran into strip opposition They're going to give him the 23 yard line white pipe teaming up with Ernie Holmes to stop it Again of about two and a half yards. It's going to be third down seven for the dolphins Yeah fat homes were just resolute on that place There's more as you're going nowhere took his head in his belly and just stopped and called Jim Kick into the wall game replacing mercury Morris
They line up Well the running back said why a Definite passing situation for Moral and Moral backs up look looks firing long down to the far side And it's juggling brought the Paul Warfield Going to the sideline as the Miami 44 yard line with Mike Wagner over to cover Warfield juggled the ball and dropped it and incomplete paths And the dealers forced them into a punting situation But caused now for station identification. This is where you'll find me every weeknight seven to ten p.m The bill who'll go show from the top of the triangle on WTAE WTAE FM Pittsburgh Very cypal the punter out of Kentucky averaging 39.9 for kick Glen Edwards deep for the dealers Cypal standing at his own nine yard line staff the Larry Cypal Get to the way rather wobbly kick short Edwards wants the fair catch pulls an end at the stealer 41 yard line and again Pittsburgh has good field position A 37 yard punt by Larry Cypal and with time out on the field to score Pittsburgh seven Miami nothing
Well here go the steers first time and Terry Bradshaw is back into the ball game So he's out. Hey Jack first intent at the Pittsburgh 41. How young to the lap run shank them to the right Bradshaw Deep hand off the puke but trying to get outside to the right and he can't make it touch back and is nailed at the line of scrimmage Maybe just short of the line of scrimmage puke runs into Dick Anderson And the safety man brings him down for a one yard loss at the 40 yard line Going to be second down 11 yards to go Sammy Davis trying to give the Frenchman a block on the pipe at Sammy tripped and didn't provide the block and that was the end of the play Anderson the six two one hundred ninety six pound safety man Playing the strong safety position for the dolphins this afternoon made the stop second down 11 It's burger its own 40 Bradshaw stopping short firing Hold it in complete Coming down and turning in at the 50 yard line had it in his arms at the Miami 48 to not hold it
Curtis Johnson came over to cover on the plate As how young at the ball in his arms and the parrot first down but to not hold the football And it will be third down now and 11 yards to go unless I'm mistaken that was Bradshaw's first pass to the ballgame right Number one right Pittsburgh facing its fourth third down situation and the Steelers have converted all three previous ones Shanklin to the right Al Young to the left Tight end is John McMacon rookie out of Clemson Four man front for the Miami dolphins They may use a three man rush and they do here is Bradshaw firing too low to Shanklin Cutting sharply from his flanker position over to the 45 yard line It came in low and the play was covered by Lloyd Mumford In complete fast And Bobby Walden is on Walden will do the punting
And Walden having a great year averaging 43.8 for kick And Miami is going deep with Jake Scott and here's Walden kicking the air out of the football Scott backing up watching it hit inside the five and go into the end zone Bobby Walden Picking that football six p.a.s from the line of scrimmage And Miami will put an employee at its own 20 yard line We have time out on the field with a score Pittsburgh seven Miami nothing Earl Moral today has thrown five passes Completed three For a total of four yards he's had one intercepted Moral quarterback in the Miami dolphins at his own 20 hands off to Zaka slipping off the left side breaks the two tackles goes to 25 the 30 And is over the 30 to the 31 yard line mel Blunt and Mike Wagner finally writing down Not a sensational
Running play but once Zaka had slipped through the line of scrimmage Not people down and he picks up a first down at the Miami 31 yard line best game or the afternoon For the dolphins and 11 yard charge by Larry Zaka It ain't come out of the huddle sending fall warfield to the left Flanking powered twully to the right there in the eye formation Zaka is the inside man Jim kick at the top of the eye takes to handoff He's nailed at the line of scrimmage cut by Ben McGee took his feet out from under him and down he went And there to help out Dwight white covering the play along with LC Greenwood No game it will be second down 10 yards to go for the dolphins at their own 31 yard line Pittsburgh leading seven and nothing Clock shows 35 seconds to play in the first quarter Zaka's carried four times to date 21 yards Here they come to the line of scrimmage second down 10
Heral Moral calling the signals and Moral backs up the throw Greenwood rushes by and the pass down field caught at the 44 yard line by Mara Fleming Tristan turns over the 45 to the 46 Mike Wagner and Andy Russell Make the stop for the Steelers and Miami has moved to another first down this time the dolphins Take the football to their own 46 yard line and time is running out in the opening period The ball spotted just short of the 46 yard line the dolphins fourth first down to the afternoon There's the end of the first quarter with the score. Pittsburgh seven Miami the dealer is leading a dolphin seven to nothing as we go into the second period here at three rivers And we haven't seen blitzing today Chuck know himself says that he and Don Schull are very close in defense of philosophies And of course know has never been known as a blitzing coach and And I thought that we'll see the dolphins going much to that today either Unless of course they're in the mood to play some some surprises
At any rate the ball now at the Dolphin 45 yard nine 46 yard line is the dolphins have a first down Jerry Mullins touched down on the fumble recovery the second touchdown for him this season and the second of his NFL career Miami will move right to left the dolphins with their best field position Well actually not they crossed the 50 on the earlier drive before being intercepted Their second best field position of the afternoon. They're in the eye of formation from the top of the eye to ball Take a memorial. He's caught and flown by LC Greenwood back along the 42 yard line For us trying to get outside of the right and Greenwood put the grab on him At the Miami 41 and a half yard line Alas four yards It will be second down and 14 for the dolphins If yes or LC got him by the letters. He said I got the material mercury down you go
He just won't let go of that shirt. I guess LC's got good fingernails Second down 14 yards to go Miami out of the huddle her own moral 17-year veteran from Michigan State quarterbacking All look to the six man's dealer front backs up the throw Cocktus arm fires complete to the Pittsburgh 47 yard line tomorrow Fleming the tight end brought down by Mike Wagner They will give him the Pittsburgh 46 about two yards short of a first down And Fleming has been a prime target this afternoon. This quarter Steelers football is being brought to you by iron city beer Iron city the taste makes it Pittsburgh's number one beer Third down two yards to go for the dolphins Line up in a tight formation with a pair of tight ends and
Moral gives it to Morris running to the right. He needs a block. He's peeled back at the 49 yard line Yeah Brod through to the island along the 49 yard line on a great play And that stops the drive The clock and made a diving tackle beautiful fight by jack Very Cyphal in Punta formation standing at his own 35 yard line When Edwards a single receiver for the Steelers Ten men poised up front Snap of the football And here's Cyphal running with a coming forward over the 50 to 45 to 40 the 35 to Pittsburgh 30 to 25 The 20 to the sideline and out of bounds at the Pittsburgh 12 yard line Larry Cyphal Who did some running at the University of Kentucky Did not even fake the pun
Took the snap from confirmation And saw the running room and took off forward and runs to a first down and Miami dolphins proved to be opportunists as they bring the ball to the Pittsburgh 12 Well, I do know that all tells the Steelers to look at for that fake punts But of course frankly who would have looked for it there so early in the ball game only 12 Only early into the second period almost 13 minutes to go in the second period so it was a real stunts to show a full there First down 10 yards to go with the Pittsburgh 12 yard line And the defensive unit is back in there digging in If put a man in the slot on the right side and off goes to Zaka running to the right Leap silver a man put his head down goes for the ten and down to the nine yard line with Henry Davis Making the tackle For the Pittsburgh Steelers Ball being spotted at the nine yard line And a game of three yards on the play second down seven more south of the ballgame Jim kick back in as a running back for the dolphins
Miami undefeated in 15 games this year Feelers carrying a record of 12 and three into the say of C championship contest Miami at the Pittsburgh nine Earl Moral calling the signals and Moral Moral goes back to pass out to the left Lobs it into the flat area cut my Zaka at the five. He's going in for a touchdown Zaka pulled it in got away from Mel Blunt Inside the five and went into the end zone for the touchdown So the dolphins are on the board Well, there's something you don't see very often Mel Blunt missing an easy tackle. He was one on one against Zaka had a good shot at him But Zaka just ran away from him Earl Moral will be the holder Garo Yopremian the Cypriot A soccer style kicker ready to go for the point Moral waiting for the ball. Here's the snap. It's down. Yopremian kicks it
And the kick is good now with time out on the field the score is Pittsburgh seven Miami seven This American conference championship game all tied up now the zero seven the dolphin seven and of course The big play for the dolphins was that 37 yard run by printer airy cypals When he emphax didn't even face the punt but simply took off and headed for that right side line the stevers The steward defense of men were at turn to run and we're going back to give So in Edwards protection and never saw him All right, here's the kick off by Yopremian down to Steve Davis three yard Steve in the end So and he'll come out over the five to the ten to the fifteen and he's nailed and goes down at the nineteen yard line Buying stop on the play for the Miami dolphins Made by Jesse Powell And Terry Henry is on the quarterback for the Steelers Replacing Terry Bradshaw Hey and Bradshaw seated on the bench with a warm up jacket over his shoulders
So apparently might have been shaken up a little worse Than everybody thought at the nineteen yard line first down ten and Terry Hanratty out of Notre Dame Is the quarterback Jim Clark is the center and ready takes full pivot handoff goes to Johnny Pipple over the right side 25 the 30 the 31 yard line with the tackle made by Lloyd Muffer to Dick Anderson First down for the Steelers they spotted at the 30 and a half yard line as Hanratty hands off the Fuqua who ran beautifully and Strong safety Dick Anderson at the riff and shot Ben Anderson hung on and he is one of the superior safety men in the league no doubt about it First down ten for the Steelers Shankland to the right. I'll young to the left Shifting Franco Harris in behind the quarterback Hanratty Terry Hanratty calling the signals handoff goes to Frank all through the middle of the 35 and after the 37 yard line
Doug Swift and Dick Anderson pulls in on him After he picks up about seven yards it will be second down and three yards to go In the steers have been breaking some big holes over right guard behind Bruce Van Dyke Van Dyke Apparently doing a great job down there Red Shaw was old for two passing before he left the ballgame and ready now on second down three And ready gives two Fuqua running to the right cutting back leaping over the 40 yard line goes for the 42 Frenchy Duke will have a first down for the Steelers covered on the play by Bern Denver and Nick Bonacani the middle linebacker For the dolphins Moving the football of the 42 yard line first down ten yards to go and if you're wondering about Brad Shaw wise not in there that one series that he did play after the injury He did appear to look a little shaky on that series So I guess he simply not clear headed enough but Hanratty has that grounded tag going
23 yards in from the near side of the field Larry Brown is wide to the left and the handoff goes to Franco finds a little running room and it closes as he makes it to the 44 yard line Doug Swift and Nick Bonacani There to stop him Again up two yards on the play the ball carrier was Franco Harris And the Steelers are at second and eight With the ball at the Pittsburgh 44 yard line the ball game is tied at seven seven Hanratty Quarterbacking Pittsburgh John Colbsam Davis Jim Clark Bruce Van Dyke Jerry Mullins the interior lineman Here they come out of a huddle Larry Brown is the tight end Brad Shaw on the sidelines Hanratty the quarterback hands off the Franco stop behind the line of scrimmage break loose And piled rise forward to the 48 yard line Back will made by Bill Stanville
And that time Franco appeared to be stopped at the 42 simply shook him handoff And move forward to the 47 and a half yard line. It's going to be third and four Yeah, Bill Stan filled a defensive end was into the back field had a clear shot at Franco Back Franco get an amazing job of breaking away They they come out of the huddle. How young to the left Ron Shanklin to the right Very brown to tie it in Hanratty back to throw for the first time going for the long ball Shanklin raises for just out of his reach At the Miami 20 yard line Shanklin coming down field beyond Lloyd mumpard and Dick Anderson and the past just out of his reach Hanratty kicks out the turf and disgust as he comes off the field First pass for Terry H Bobby Walden in confirmation and the dolphins Then Jake Scott deep Dick Anderson is the upman and Walden standing at his own 34 high snap gets his kick away Low trajectory coming down bouncing inside the 20 bouncing back inside the 10 inside the 5 and the Steelers
Touch the ball down It gets into the end zone. There were Steelers all around the football But they could not get it inside the 5 yard line as Walden got off of beauty Bobby Walden Kick that football beautifully. We should have had it inside the 5 but he got away now with time out on the field after a 52 yard Bobby Walden front with time out of the field the score hitsburg 7 Miami 7 Miami at its own 20 yard line first down 10 yards to go 759 to play in the first half here three river stadium at Pittsburgh and the temperature moving into the high 60 Little off and out of the huddle tight formation there in the eye quarterback is veteran Earl moral From the eye formation moral gives off to the inside man Zunca straight ahead for a couple of yards stiff opposition brought down by Ben McGee Mary Zunca the 237 pound Running back of the Miami Doppens picks up two yards second down 8
Miami at its own 22 yard line The winner of this game advances into the Super Bowl at Los Angeles on January 14 Warfield wide to the left They send Howard Twilly out to the right and they're in the eye formation Here is the pitch to Mercury Morris more sleep silver attacker comes over to 20 to 25 to 30 He's got running room. He's cut from behind and brought down outside the 45 yard line. They're going to spot it Around the 49 for the tackle made by Johnny Rouser Morris that time almost cut behind the line of scrimmage as he had been on a similar play earlier Found the running room to the outside and once he gets going he looks like a bullet Yeah, and the big thing in that Miami running attack one of the big things is Larry Zunca's blocking Jack came was the man who almost through Morris for a lot but Zunca put a cruncher on him Well that to run Morris was a minus one rushing
All right, Moral has him in his own 49 Moral gives it to Zaka Zaka running to the left as Dale crossing the 50 by Dwight White and the Russell took a shot at him and Miss D man white was there to nail him as he came over the 50 And they're going to spot them all at the Pittsburgh 48 yard line and Moral gives the hand out to Zaka And Zaka trying to get off the left side by snow where to go Henry David there to meet him along with Andy Russell Cross-buck into the left side and no gain on the play So it's going to be third down Maybe got a half yard out of it. Let's call it third and seven Ralph Anderson enters the ballgame as a fifth back defensively for the Steelers Otto Stowe Replacing the tight end of the so they're giving them three wide receivers Paul Warpield Stowe and Twilly Look at this formation two men wide right one man wide left from the eye formation a pitch to Mercury Morris run into the right
Trying to get outside of the 50 nail on his own 48 yard line Mercury Morris nails hit by LC Greenwood By Jack Ham and by Johnny Rouser. Yes, Johnny Rouser When I arrived at the office for taking my Play he made a real good play Standing ovation for the Pittsburgh defense very cyborg Who did not put the last time round with a football cyborg at his own 34 yard line the snap of the ball and cyborg cuts Wobbly here can't call for bad words at his own 15 and the Steelers have the ball back 440 remaining to play in the quarter Steelers football continues after this brief message Well the Steelers take over now at their own 16 yard line first and 10 Total rushing Pittsburgh 70 the doffens 86 the doffens 40 yards passing the Steelers 0
Doffens total offense 126 Pittsburgh 70 the doffens averaging 5.2 For play and the Steelers 3.6 And the ballgame tied at 7.7 The Pittsburgh touchdown set up on a pass in reception by Glenn Edwards And the Steelers marched right down with a Bradshaw rolling out to the left Get at the three yard line fumbled it into the end zone where Jerry Mullins recovered very brown Comes wide to the right that's bird sets two men wide to the left now young and run shankland And they shift Harris over and the handoff goes to Harris in the line cutting back goes to the 20 and his gang tackle at the 20 yard line Harris came off the right side cut back to his left And brought the football out to the 20 yard line again of four yards on the play Bill Stanford and Dick Anderson were two A four men who brought him down as they spirited the defensive play and the ball is just outside the 20
Yes, and I believe it was Doug Swift who had a chance to stop Franco at the line is grimaced But Franco is running hard. He wouldn't be stopped We sent our young to the left ring run shankland to the right Larry Brown to tight end is into his normal tight position Running backs are cucumber and Harris the quarterback is Terry Hanratty and ready pull pivot gives off the cucumber Driving into the middle of the line and squirming out to the 23 yard line You'll pick up a couple of yards on the play and we'll face a third down play With about three yards to go third and three Very Brad Shaw is up on his feet now standing at the sideline holding his helmet During and gently out of the play as it takes place on the turf three minutes 36 seconds To go into second quarter All right, the stealers on a third and three situation And Rattie sending young to the left shankland to the right And Hanratty stopping short firing out left. Oh young takes the ball is knocked down at the 29 yard line as a first down
Well young bolted in it by Curtis Johnson and knocked down at the 29 yard line And they're going to give him the 28 It will be a first down ten and we complete our first pass of the afternoon That's a little square-eyed pattern and Curtis Johnson the corner back head no chance to break it up Stealer's to make good on four out of six third down plays for the afternoon Harris today 11 carries 53 yards here's Hanratty fading back throwing a screen pass the left to frank. Oh, and he is nailed He hits the turf he loses the football, but it is dead Now let's see what the rolling is official being charged by numerous Miami dolphins Franco Harris was nailed by many Fernandez and very definitely hit the turf and lost the football And as soon as you hit the ground the play is dead, but there is a loss Six yards from the 28 back to the 22 on the screen pass attempt to the right. Yes. We do call that a pass. Don't we jack it wasn't a lateral
What are you talking about? It was forward. That's what I'm saying. I'm clarifying this game I'll have to stop and think about it for a minute Stealer's line up to go into action and the official steps in and blows his whistle the two-minute warning in the quarter So at time out on the field the score fits bird seven Miami seven Jack Fleming with myring co-op and com vendor at three river state. We're going to pause for station Identification. Hi, this is sound lines and writing it to spend all night with me Here on the Pittsburgh sound for good music WTAE and WTAE FM in Pittsburgh Very handwriting complete to conference with Chuck Null and his staff on the sideline And is back out on the field we face a second and 16 situation at our own 22 Two minutes remaining to play in the period Seven seven ball game Trying to think of my own mind what the strategy might be here will take the
Received the kickoff at the start of the third quarter The question is whether they will attempt To merely maintain possession of the football and get a first down as possible and run out the time So whether they might come up and uh and go for the long game or we'll have to see And ready in there in place of Bradshaw who was shaken up back earlier hand off to the right side of Franco Hipped up as he comes across the line of scurmage actually ran into his own blocker Bruce van Dyke duck swift covered him As he went down at the 25 yard line They mark it out at the 26 and it is third down And 12 yards to go third and 12 and as JD Fugherty pointed out during the time out the dolphins with four Four linebackers in for that by one of them playing actually is the defense event Well, they're in a more or less a three-four now and they pull it back or up They're using a three-man rush and hand ready firing down young cutting across the 30 takes of running ladder
Will he give ground trying to get outside? He's caught up the 30 yard and a great food twice forward over the 35 fighting his way to the 37 yard line He's short of a first down great running by all young Fighting and scrambling and finally nailed at the 37 yard line Right down but Dick Anderson and Nick Bonacani And he winds up After all that running about a yard short of a first down and Bobby Walden will come on Fourth down and one yard to go a great effort by Al Young Dick Anderson the up man and Jake Scott the deep man for Miami with a minute 10 to play in the second quarter Walden with funs of 60 and 52 yards measured from the line of scrimmage The dolphins called time out they wanted to stop the clock Steeler's football will continue after this brief timeout
Bobby Walden gets away a high wobbly lazy fun That is pulled in on the fair catch by Jake Scott at the Miami 20 43 yard punch from the line of scrimmage and the dolphins have the football with a minute two on the clock at their own 20 Her homo moral steps under center They were setting up their plays on the sideline before they came on the field and off to the inside man Larry Nailed as he came over the 20 may get a yard out of the play At the bottom of it mean Joe Green of the Pittsburgh Steelers about a half yard It's going to be second nine and a half to go This quarter Steelers football being brought to you by iron city beer Iron city that tastes makes it Pittsburgh's number one beer clock turning 33 seconds Miami with a football Moral draw handoff to Mercury Morris coming through the middle and he fights his way off of the 24 yard line And Morris brought down by Joe Green Henry Davis and Ernie Holmes at the 24
It is third down and six for the Miami dolphins and now the Steelers call time with 21 seconds and bring Stick to Anderson onto the field as a fifth defensive back replacing Henry Davis You know, Jack That Miami running attack has been a strong attack all season They've got the power in dark and kicking the speed in mercury Morris But we have to remark on how hard the Steelers have been hitting today You can't hit less than your best against these guys and expect to stop them because they'll break away But Joe Green tackle of very drunk a few moments ago on that first time Play was that typical of the way the Steelers have been hitting Joe and in there of oh and hitting strong and drunk and didn't gain another inch And that's what you've got to do So let's see what the dolphins now elect to do on third down at their own 24 yard line and 21 seconds left on the clock in this first half The ballgame tied seven seven
Roy Jerella pacing up and down from the Steelers bench fighting his own personal battle keeping him So ready to run on that field at any time. He might be needed Against it there and allow yourself to stiffen up Jerella staying loose Miami third down six and a half And Merrill Moral directs the attack rolls right Moral looking throwing to the far side of the field completing the pass to the 34 yard line to Paul Warfield And he goes out of bounds covered by Ralph Anderson stopping the clock with 14 seconds At the 34 and a half yard line and up for a first down The dolphins keep the football at 14 seconds to go there eight first down They have converted three out of five third down plays And Moral is seven for nine passing with one interception 14 seconds remaining to play in the second quarter with the dolphins at their own 34 and a half yard line
Out of the huddle they bring Warfield to the left then Howard Tully out to the right Their tight end is Mara Fleming draw a handoff merc to remorse running to the left turns it on coming to the near side Going out of bounds at the 40 yard line Moral saw he was quarter very alertly went out about stopping the clock with nine seconds Mike Wagner covering for the Steelers and it often picked up five yards On the running play to the left side with Mercury Moral's the ball carrier Seven seven ballgame Steelers picked one up in the first quarter the dolphins won in the second quarter Nine seconds before the intermission And this win is for the AFC championship The dolphins were here last year They won the AFC title and went into the Super Bowl The Pittsburgh Steelers Had moved out further than they have ever gone Winning a division title beating the Oakland Raiders Back goes Moral he's gonna go deep down in here side line and the passes over thrown intended for Warfield
Beyond him at the Pittsburgh 15 yard line Warfield given double coverage coming down the side line Mel Blunt was down there to cover Mike Wagner was over and the ball returns to the Miami 40 yard line for the third down play The Moral uncork won that time that would have carried for all the marble Steelers playing with five defensive backs and Miami will apparently get one more shot at doing something before the first half is over And after a conference on the sideline Mara Flumming comes back in replacing Jim Nandage As the tight end for the dolphins This will be their sixth third downplay of the afternoon They've converted three out of five thus far Into first down get the lineup Auto scows into the ballgame our police in their pole warfield three wide receivers And back goes Moral Moral looking firing down a far sideline and it is out of the reach of the receiver
At the Pittsburgh 15 yard line Over the far side Howard Quilley was looking up into the sun He could not see the football finally got one hand on it The son had blinded him he could not get the football and it fell incomplete So that's the end of the first half here at three river stadium the score Pittsburgh 7 Miami 7 half time at three rivers stadium the American conference championship game Deadlocked at often seven the Steelers 7 and we'd have to say that the dolphins well Statistically in the first half had a little the better of it They gained a total of 146 yards 95 rushing and 51 passing That to the Steelers at 91 yards 80 of rushing and 11 passing but of course a lot of the dolphin's engine statistics comes from that 37 yards run by punner of airy insightful when he pulled the Steelers by not punning And you know that the next time he fined the Steelers
defense instead of turning around and racing back to help the punt receiver They they back pedal they kept one eye on him very firmly Press and Pearson and Morrison Warren banks them that is the two men who pull back out of the Steeler line Well today's half time so now continues with Tom Bender Hi everybody Tom Bender sports is being brought to you today on WTA radio 1250 sports by your neighborhood Gulf tire store Well, there have been three important things happen in the first half Terry Bradshaw Was injured as he was rolling for a possible touchdown. He pumbled as Jack and Myron have told you recovered by Jerry Mullins in the end zone for a TD And it was after an interception by Glenn Edwards a personal foul Against the Steelers on the Miami dolphins first series gave Miami a terrific break as it occurred on a third down play
And instead of a punning situation the dolphins kept their drive alive But they did get an interception however they would have had poor field position and the Steelers might have scored And cypal a fake punt and I know that we have heard Much talk about the fact that Chuck Null and Don Shula coach a lot of life that they never run From a pun formation But these are the things that you do and a playoff a championship game such as we have here at three-remember stadium today And if it works you are a hero if somebody would have diagnosed to then dump cypal They would have turned the game around Completely and the Steelers and all probability would have continued their momentum momentum They had at the time and might have gone in to score There is no question the Chuck Null pulled Terry Bradshaw because he is a bit boggy Because of what happened on the series after Bradshaw's injury He did not appear to be able to see his receivers. He was throwing badly any came out the Steelers
Switched just a bit from a running game which they had on their first series to that passing game and maybe Chuck Null simply did not like what he saw It is seven to seven. It's been very interesting and we're going to be back right after this message You come out high Think of all that was up to you The Steelers will receive the kickoff, but the Steelers will receive the kickoff But the all-emprech is how seriously as he's been hurt the The second half and I think that I don't have to you know emphasize the seriousness of that particular situation There is no question that the Steelers offense has been built around Terry Bradshaw and Terry Hanretti has not been in the ballgame for many many weeks So we just have to wait and see what happens as the Steelers and the dolphins are all tied up at seven to seven
Well, that's the halftime show for now and it has been brought to you by your local golf tire stores on WTA Radio 1250 sports We're just about ready for the start of the second half So Mira Jack Fleming and Myron Co Back at three rivers, stadium the halftime show still going on mixtures me And well Like advantage of this time to give you the half the first half statistic The first time we're practically even that's often a recording eight first times the Steelers seven that often total yardage 146 yards And 95 of that was rushing And 51 fasting and of course that 37 yard run by Larry Cyphe will kind of for a good bit of the dolphin's edge and statistics the Steelers gaining a total of only 91 yards 80 of them on the ground 11 passing
In the passing department Terry Bradshaw before he was injured and left the game So had thrown only twice completed none of them. He threw one it should have been a completion But all young dropped it and incidentally Bradshaw's injury is a bruised shoulder Why see we're shaking up pretty badly, but the feeling Signs there's is that he can come back into this ballgame if he's needed and who knows he may even start the second half We'll have the second half kick off after this message, you know To go on with the statistics Terry and ready after taking over for Bradshaw Through four times completed three of them for a total of only 11 yards He did go once to run Shanklin on the long bomb and through the ball very well But let him by yard and the feeling among some of us in the press box was that something happened to Shanklin and Root's time Field he didn't he appeared to slip for a moment and And it may be that that pass was just perfectly caught as we say it that Shanklin by only a yard here come the Steelers onto the field
They get a big hand the band is left of playing surface and there's going to be a presentation Well here comes the saver across the field carrying a big Italian flag He's making it from one side of the field over to the other to greet the Steelers coming from their dressing room One of Uncle Sam's United States Navy men and he is now being ushered off the field But he's having a big time There's going to be a presentation done on the field now willing near the middle linebacker of the Kansas City Chief Who was named the NFL's man of the year for not only his good football play, but His superior citizenship is a big man in his community there naming him the man of the year and presenting him with a handsome bronze trophy In the rushing department in the first half Franco Harris rolled for 57 yards
57 yards and 12 carries for Frank Franko and average of 4.7 yards of carry so he could Finish this day with more than a hundred yards Frenchy-proof Duke again the 18 yards in five carries the Steelers have held down Larry Zonka pretty well He's gained only 30 yards carrying the ball eight times an average of 3.8 yards of carry and mercury Morris Whom the dolphins did not run to the outside all that much not as much as you would expect Mercury gained 28 yards and eight carry so you can see that the Still our defense has been hitting hard not allowing the dolphins to get give the play that second effort stopping that dolphin power and The result is their big guns just have not been able to explode The willy-learner ceremony still taking place down here on the field and let's see if we have Terry Bradshaw warming up
No, it's gonna be hand-ready in the second half Cuz he although Bradshaw is warming up to and ready is the guy with his helmet on So I guess what it boils down to is the Steelers are just not gonna use Bradshaw And let's they are absolutely forced to and by that we would mean an injury to Terry and ready Hand-ready was throwing the ball as we mentioned before throwing the ball very well and practiced this week chuck No, use the adjective great So he you know he could do a very nice job for the Steelers today, but when you lose Bradshaw You lose that extra something the threat of that run on the broken plate hand-ready is not known as a as a runner and And certainly when Bradshaw is out of there the other team can the defense can pretty well Eliminate the prospect of that broken field run by the quarterback So it's no small loss, but the game is tied up 7 to 7
And the second half is a little slow getting underway because of that presentation of a trophy to willy-learner, but now the Teams are taking the field for the second half kick off and jack if you'll take it over I'll get the last bite of my hot dog down. It's cold Willy-learner named the NFL man of the year was The center to hand some trophy by Lamar Haunt the president of the American football conference Couple of great performances this afternoon both in the pregame and the halftime shows Across the way in the sunshine It is a short sleeve crowd unbelievable In this part of the country for December 31st This is New Year's Eve people sitting out here watching football and their shirt sleeves and even in the shaded portions Mostly just sweaters and jackets and even some people in shirt sleeves in the shaded areas of the stadium And I'd say about two-thirds of the field is now in shadow
You premier will kick off right to left with Pearson and Davis deep pressed into the right of the kicker and Steve to the left And you're premiering is ready comes forward and kicks it and he kicks it well deep in the end zone over the end line and out of play So Pittsburgh will put the ball and play at its own 20 yard line And the quarterback will be Terry Henrady And ready at six one two hundred ten pounds It is fourth year in the league from Notre Dame Steelers through six passes in the first half completed three Fred Shaw and over two Henrady went three for four For all moral seven for eleven with one interception Steelers go left to right Rayman's field is the center goes over the football a shank went to the right All young to the left and ready to quarterback And ready calling the signals And ready takes and off to preco driving left cutting back and moving to the 23 yard line
Full pivot by Henrady on the inside handoff to Frank Goharris running to his left Nick Bonacani and Bill Stanford make the stop at the 23 yard line And it's a game of three yards second down seven first fans. I got ahead of Franko giving him a good block But there was simply too many dolphins covering the plate to allow it to go anywhere Feelers in their black jerseys gold pass black helmets Moving left to right Miami and white Five men in the forward wall Take by Henrady and he's nailed And ready fake them all the Frenchy Fuqua started to unwind to throw to our young and they swarmed over top of him Bill Stanford made the stop as they cut Terry H At the 17 yard line the first time they have sacked our quarterback this afternoon The loss goes back to the 17 yard line. It's going to be third down now 13 yards to go for the stelers Frenchy Duke with trying to get under Bill
Stand fill out but stand fill six five and two fifty hurtled him to make the tackle And ready third and long yardage shank them to the right and ready goes deep looks they come after him Fires downfield and a leaping stab by John McMacon at the 35 Pulse and then it goes to the 39 yard line jigs got covering the plays and that had to be a great play by McMacon As Henrady under extreme pressure from the Miami rush put the ball in the air to McMacon and McMacon in a crowd of people and up and folded And the referee catch a head ready and now 4 out of 5 Great pressure by Bill Stanford on the quarterback The tackle two great catches in a roll as Henrady hit his target in each time Got a superb effort on the part of the receiver and this one moves them all to the Miami 37 first down 10 yards to go What a catch what a leaping finger nail catch with mumpered off over shank went shank Simply out jump them and he'll on to that ball to the steers or it's a Miami 37 yard line and moving behind
And ready out of the huddle shank went to the right How young to the left McMacon the tight end And ready calling the signals for the Pittsburgh Steelers draw handoff goes to do for cuts off the left side ready outside of the 30 to 25 Stops up at 20 slips goes down gets up goes to the 15 inside the 15 down to the tall yard line Sure discussion finally made the tackle on an astounding run by Frenchy Hucquas now in three plays In three plays the Steelers have moved the football deep in the Miami territory French the same across the middle on the draw middle line back or Nick Barnacani was there to meet him But the French had placed them into the back and back in three rivers And headed for the side and was on his way in the 13 24 yard play that time with Duke with the carry the ball is at the 13 yard line first and 10 Told pivot by hand ready handoff to Duke across fucky In the middle of the line he goes down to the 10 yard line
Burned den herder and many Fernandez teaming up on the stop for the Miami dolphins Ball will be spotted at the 11 yard line You're listening to stealer football on wta e this afternoon Very nice to have you with us And ready is five for six passing 57 yards Frank old 13 carry 60 yards Hucquas seven carries 44 yards Here is handwriting firing the passes block trying to hit Al Young As he cuts sharply in from his wide position and the ball is deflected by a linebacker And I should have been Mike Colin over on their side deflecting the ball incomplete And it's returned to the 11 yard line where it is going to be Third down and eight yards to go So hey and ready now five out of seven he's throwing the ball well, but that time he couldn't get it over that big line man
All right, they line up at the 11 yard line and hand ready steps under center And ready calling the signals another full pivot the pitch to fukin to the right side A red or two Harris he's trapped and then comes outside and goes out of bounds At the eight yard line Harris that time appeared to have the running room in the blockers But they closed in on him at him trapped Doug Swift and Dick Anderson chased him out of bounds At the eight yard line well short of the first down Round of applause for the offensive unit and its quarterback carry hand ready and Roy Jurella's on Bobby Walden will be his holder and he will be kicking from the 15 yard line Jurella has hit 28 of 41 field goal tries on the season This is a big one Walden gets a low snap puts it down Jurella kicks it His dick is good Jurella hits from 15 yards and with time out of the field the score
Pittsburgh 10 Miami These dealers have just taken a three point lead 10 seven with Roy Jurella's 14 yard field going great works By Bobby Walden the holder in getting a low snap up in the nick of time And at twice today he's done that Jim Clark is a On both on an extra point and on a field goal has centered the ball though And Walden has been very nimble to get the ball up for Jurella Terry hand ready let that drive to his score with Slick pass and and great receiving by Ron Shanklin and John McMacon That's what did it as the dealers moved on there couldn't quite Get in for a touchdown, but they lead 10 seven Jurella teased it up at the 40 he'll kick off left to right with murky remorse and Charlie Lee deep And here is his kick very high coming down the Morris one yard deep in the end zone he'll take it there and settle for the touchback Murky remorse Back to one yard deep in the end zone to take the kickoff
Neal with the football and Miami We'll put it in play at the Dolphin 20 yard line as this crowd of over 50,000 chance deep in And Bob greasy comes on to quarterback the Miami Dolphin Six-year man from Purdue 6-1-1-90 injured in the early part of the season But has come back strong at the end greasy quarterbacking the Miami Dolphin Rather tight formation with the flanker to the right they shift out of the eye And greasy Giving the handoff straight ahead Jim kick the ball carry or coming out to the 22 yard line Snow under by the center of the Pittsburgh defense anchored by Ben McGee Ball is spotted at the 22 kick picks up two yards Crazy of course coming off an injury darn sure as any was a little bit gimphy This wake but he wants to get something going so he's using crazy Kick is at the top of the eyes. Zonka the inside man the ends are tight once again
Miami looking basically at a six-man front Greasy Titching to the right to kick he juggles the football cuts for an east hit by Joe Greed And nailed it to 23 yard line Joe Greed hit him and I mean he really hit him Jim kick juggle the football as he ran to the right Game control of it cut forward and let Joe Greed knock him down they give him the 23 and a half yard line Third down six and a half yards to go and this is the play where we have to stop them Henry Davis out Sticks Anderson and as a fifth defensive back and boy I'll tell you if Joe Greed hit me the way he hit kick I wouldn't wake up for a year Wow Powered Twilly a wide to the left They sent Paul Warfield out to the right Now they put Warfield to the left too and use another wide receiver to the right here is Greasy firing complete to Warfield At the 35 Warfield racing down field over to 50 to Pittsburgh 40 cut from behind at the 30 and written down at the Pittsburgh
25 as Mike Weitner cutting and Warfield shot into the open to take the football and turned on the speed And Weitner is hurt on the play but gets up Let's see whether he'll stay Henry Davis is returning So the dolphins strike through the air and they move the football with Warfield the receiver to the Fitzburg 24 It was a little slam in passes when it wasn't Andy Russell unfortunately was was stuck with trying to cover Paul Warfield and he just doesn't have the speed to do it so Warfield was able to get free and turn it on and boy I'll tell you Mike Wagner did a great job or running him down Dopins have converted four out of seven third downplay first in ten at the Fitzburg 24 With Greasy quarterbacking Greasy gives to his inside man Zaka straight ahead just off the left side And he moves it down over the 20 almost to the 19 yard line white white at the bottom of the play And they set the ball back to the 20 for a four yard game
It's going to be second down and six yards to go to Miami Doppens at the Fitzburg 20 Steelers leading 10 seven 806 to play in the third quarter here three river stadium Steelers have not been behind they led seven and nothing were tied seven seven lead in the ball game 10 seven Out of the huddle Howard Quilly goes for the right. They bring Paul Warfield to the left Running backs are kicked and Zaka The combination they carried him so far last year Here's the handoff to Zaka and he wades off the right side going off tackle for a couple of yards Moving the ball to the 18 yard line LC Greenwood Made the tackle and they spot the ball at the 18 a two yard game It's going to be third down at four yards to go for the Miami Doppens The eight times this afternoon They had the third downplay and they have converted four out of seven Ball at the Fitzburg 18 and the crowd shedding deep hats and the Doppens Taking their time coming out of the huddle sending twillie out to the right
Four fields Comes to the left The tight ends splits about three yards And the running backs are said wide and greasy May pass here is white white off side as the plague gets underway in the past is Intercept of a jackam out over the 10 the 15 the 20 the 25 the 30 and out of bounds at the 34 yard line But we had a man offside White white was pulled off and could not get back as they snapped the football The flag was down ham came up with the interception, but I think it will be nullified. Yes There surely will be a white white was at least a yard and a half into the Miami backfield And and as he was drawn off Why this the penalty will go against the Steelers And that's what's going to be the case. Yeah, they've singled offside white stepped over and then was trying to get back And they snapped the football he didn't make it Five yard penalty will give them a first down. I want a break for Miami Their 10th first down to the afternoon
Pittsburgh second penalty Total of 20 yards and the ball is at the 13 yard line And the youngster from east Texas state hasn't made too many mistakes this year Can't fall. They A little bit over eager Pittsburgh Lines up with five men in their front Shifting Kick into a flanker position to the left basically a double wing offense And the handoff goes to Zaka and he is bailed but white white along the 15 yard line White white got Zaka Helped out on the play by Andy Russell. They're going to give him the 14 yard line for a loss of about a yard and a half Second down 11 and a half yards to go. Well, you can bet white white was soaring himself for bingo offside on that previous Play so he set out to make up for it in whatever way good and he sure did come off of the right play there Miami coming out of the huddle at the Pittsburgh 14 yard line
In a 10-7 ball game Bob greasy the quarterback second down 11 and a half yards to go at the Pittsburgh 14 Reese he drops back looks looks running with a football now running back to the right still looking In pursuit he throws downfield completes the pass to the five yard line pulled in by Mara Fleming Who is knocked down along the five by Johnny Rouser Mara Fleming catches the football At the five yard line and the dolphins Are on a third down play with three yards to go third actually two and a half yards to go and of course greasy had a lot of time there and that's Been pretty much the case today the stealer front four has not been able to exert great pressure either against moral or greasy And those quarterbacks normally have been releasing the ball very quickly but that time lot of time for crazy All right, it is third down two and a half yards to go they line up tight got warfield inside on the right side And greasy gives the ball the kick and kick mild rise forward and he stopped
Just over the four yard line and I don't believe he made it Jim kick almost broke loose as he bounced off of somebody the center of the defense Stacked you out the play And they spot the ball At the three and a half yard line Actually to those of it is at the three and they're going to measure Bringing the sticks in from the far side of the field And extending them they are a yard short of a first down And Don Shulis says go for it You know Stealers rushing Steve for nest on the field and Ernie Holmes Henry Davis comes off Andy Russell comes off So they bring out two linebackers and add two defensive linemen fourth down And he are to go For the Miami dolphins at the Pittsburgh three and a half yard line
And a big big play Don Shulis Telling his charges to go for it and they line up Fourth down one and the crowd is standing Big big play tight formation for Miami Greasy calling the signals Greasy's hand off the kick and kick drives through the middle and he may have it Block his stop while they uncover the situation You Made it i believe to the two yard line First down Miami. He just barely got it by a half yard first down Miami at the two The dolphins picking up their 11 first down to the afternoon Six for nine on third down situations including that fourth down conversion
Again the tight power formation two tight ends Greasy calling the signals out of the eye formation To Zaka Zaka hitting just off the right side nailed nowhere to go And at the bottom of that play You're gonna find Ernie Holmes Yes a nice play by Ernie Holmes really met Zaka hard there So nice going fats in the dolphins here now second down at the two yard line Ham and Russell back in That brings Holmes and for us out And Miami second down and two at the Pittsburgh two yard line with three 32 on a turning clock in the third quarter the stealers leading by three High formation very tight power formation And a quick pitch to the right side here is kick coming out cutting back and he goes into the end zone for the touchdown Jim kick running right Cutting back and diving into the end zone for the Miami touchdown and the dolphins are on the board with the score
Jim kick the ball carrier going into the end zone as the dolphins picked up their second touchdown to the afternoon That brings on Giro yapremian And yapremian is kicked one extra point already today Miami 13 Pittsburgh 10 The holder is Earl Moral And yapremian who kicks with the left foot is ready Stealers poised for the rush the snap yapremian kicks And the kick is good now with time out on the field the score Miami 14 Pittsburgh 10 Yapremian will kick off from Miami Steve Davis and Preston Pearson are deep with the Steelers And Miami taking the lead in the ball game for the first time at 14 to 10 Today is proud officially announced at 50,350
Looking on in this battle for the AFC title In 1972 Here is your premier kicking off Bouncing downfield in the arms of Pearson inside the 10 out of the 15 to 20 to 25 breaks the tackle From 30 to 35 to 40 needs a block can't get it goes down to 45 yardline Preston Pearson finally stopped at a kicker Giro yapremian As he came to the 45 yardline needed maybe just one more block and he would have been on his way But the Steelers get a fine return and they're going to spot that ball forward to the 47 Fine return by Preston Pearson And the Steelers first in 10 now at their own 47 Some confusion as they break the huddle and line up Using the ends tight two tight ends and the handoff to Franco Harris running to the right cuts forward comes across the 50 Runs into skip opposition to Miami 48, many Fernandez
And Jake Scott Execute the defensive play and Franco will pick up about five yards. They're using two tight ends And a tight power formation on first down five yard gains second down and five yards to go Frank wanted to get real wide on the sweet but Frenchie jute when the other blockers put clear that Miami don't Fence out of there so we cut inside and made decent yardage Two 15 to play in the third quarter Again two tight ends in the lineup The running backs are said wide And the handoff given the puke off puke on the cross buck through the middle to the 45 yard line two Yard short of a first now with Fernandez and Colin there to block the way as the Steelers Apparently just a little bit wary Of the wide receiver situation at the moment although they moved well with the ball Got by the tight end John McMacon on their last drive and Ron Shanklin on another catch Now turn to the running game
Third and two at the Miami 45 yard line Another big play The quarterback is Terry Hanratty sets the ball club and here is an offside call John McMacon jumped the snap went offside and that's going to cost us five yards It will move the ball back to the 50 yard line And that will alter the strategy that spurred was offside Move the ball back to the 50 yard line where it is going to be third down and seven Third and seven at the 50 Steeler stay with the two tight ends Third penalty of the day against the Steelers for a total of 25 yards Out of the huddle Shanklin to the right the ends are tight quick snap here's Hanratty firing down the middle in and out of the arms All of Larry Brown coming down and over inside the 40 yard line at the 38
Hanratty appeared to have it on the mark jakes got a niggbona coney to cover did not figure On the reception of the pass as it came out of the arms of Larry Brown Yes, Hanratty had excellent protection and he put the ball right there But it was incomplete as broad dropped at Hanratty now five for eight Dick Anderson the upman jakes got deep the snap the Bobby Walden and his pun is away Straight away spiraling down field and into the end zone So it's a 50 yard punch from the line of scrimmage Miami gets the ball back The dolphins will operate from their own 20 yard line and the Steeler defense Again draws the assignment as the wind whips up Here at three river stadium as strong as we've seen it blow throughout the afternoon At this point it definitely would have to be a factor in the passing game for either team We trail 14 to 10 with a minute 17 to play in the third quarter The dolphins operating an offense right to left What are back by Bob greasy
Him on at the start of the second half running backs are kick and Zaka Greasy at his own 20 sets that offense and off the Zaka into the right side hit if the line of scrimmage and his momentum We'll give him two yards as he is tackled very solidly by LC greenwood Very Zaka picks up two yards to the 22 yard line block continues to turn with a minute one to play in the third quarter Greasy today has thrown two passes completed two for a total of 61 yards All right the clock down to 49 seconds in the third period second down eight Greasy sets his ball club Here is Greasy coming deep paking looking up field passing past Almost intercepted intended for Mara Fleming three men in the area and the Russell's fans his feet and discuss Henry Davis was over there Russell Built that he had a shot at it. It looked as though the interception might be coming as he threw into a crowd of Steelers
Yes, I think that's just what happened Russell thought he had the interception But of course Henry Davis couldn't be blamed he can't take a chance on a going to Russell He's got a drive for the ball and he didn't as a result. He possibly broke up Russell's interception Ernie Holmes out and Ralph Anderson in as the fifth back Third down eight Pulled it off and At their own 22 yard line And Greasy gives to Mercury Morris running to the right turns the corner and is driven out of bounds short of the 30 yard line At the 29 Hit on the far side of the field Like Lynn Edwards Knocked out of bounds short of the first down. It will be fourth down and about a yard to go Stiller defense Get the round of applause Edwards needs help shake it up coming off the field and apparently cut it in the left shoulder on the tackle
And they run Ed Bradley Into the lineup Bradley in there and coming off Rocky Blire is weak for the first time this afternoon blire will be the deep receiver very stable and punt formation at his own 15 Makes his time gets it away blire coming over to the right catches at the 28 comes over the 30 running to the 35 and driven out of bounds at the 35 yard line A flag down downfield Miami has had only one penalty of five yards this afternoon Holding against the dolphins And Pittsburgh will take the penalty Well, let's see how it works out that time we got it back to the 35 now a 15 yard penalty against Miami They were caught holding On the punt play
This win to be measured from the 29 yard line We'll take them all back to the 14 yard line We'll take them all back to the 14 yard line Well spotted at the Miami 14 yard line There's a risk involved anytime you take a penalty like that But I have to agree with the decision because what you're doing is playing for field position forcing the Miami punner to punt from practically his own goal line That's where cycle standing They move the ball to the outer hash mark to get cypher away from the upright Cypher standing at his goal line rocky blire upfield at the Pittsburgh 45 Cypher waiting for the snap here it comes and cypher gets the kick away High and wobbly blire wants the fair catch bolt in the end at the Miami 48 yard line
So the Steelers picked up 17 yards on the exchange from their own 35 to the Miami 48 line field position for Pittsburgh Well, that's one time a penalty worked for this the yours They've only been penalized three times themselves today, but two of those penalties hurt them badly One of them being when MacMacon went offside on third and two and the other when White white was offside to help but off and drive So that's the end of the third quarter with the with the score the dolphins 14 the Stevers 10 Are looking for an economy car so you go down the line vague a bento Volkswagen Toyota not bad might do But hey don't buy anything till you've seen Plymouth's economy car this 73 duster You're going to pay a few more bucks before how much more car you get in a duster you get room for five people not four You're not driving a telephone booth on wheels Downs you get a trunk you could stuff a stealer into you get an engine that doesn't give you a heart failure
Wondering if you're going to make it onto the parkway before that car a quarter mile back crawls up to rear window So for just a few more shackles you've gotten into a lot more car I know I drive a duster go see the new economy 73 duster at your nearest Chrysler Plymouth dealer and you'll say my ring co-porn sports was on the ball for one say the new 1973 duster at Your nearest Chrysler Plymouth dealer of hill come through for you Stealers on the exchange of the football haven't at the Miami 48 Here in the fourth quarter Pittsburgh moves right to left As we view the ball game for you here at three rivers stadium with a crowd of 50,000 350 an absolute sellout on hand the final quarter Of this aFC title game with Miami leading 14 to 10 and the stealers operating now with good field position Terry hand ready to quarterback and Terry Bradshaw still on the sideline And he has I believe you said my run of Bruce shoulder. Yes, Terry Bradshaw does have a Bruce shoulder
And he was shaking up pretty badly too. So apparently they just don't want to take any chances with him And he's doing a job all right He's not bad in there And ready gives the handoff to Franco Harris run into the left breaks two tackles drives forward to the Miami 41 yard line Coming to the left shook off two men dug swift finally nailed it He was within a step again a breaking loose And Miami would have seen some grease lightning that time had he been able to shake one more man free and dick Anderson the strong safety and one of the best in the business Must be wondering when it takes to knock Franco down because Anderson Felt at him and Franco just kept right on going Second down three yards to go That's bird got the Miami 41 and ready the quarterback Fakes goes deep looks fires the bomb intended for Shanklin knocked down out of front of Shanklin at the 23 yard line game in short Over there on the play was Lloyd Mumpert and Mumpert had to ball in his hands and didn't hold it incomplete
Now he paused for station identification. Hi, this is Lario Bryan right now I'd like to take a minute to tell you about my new morning show six to ten on WTA But they only gave me ten seconds WTA EW TA FM Pittsburgh It is third down now three yards to go for the Steelers 10th third downplay the afternoon and ready throwing trying to get it just over the line of skirmish to Shanklin Incomplete came in low Nick Bonacone covering the play As Hanrani true short to the target and Roy Jarella will come on Walden will be the holder from 48 yards out And Jarella with a long assignment the wind has died down Beatman will be Jake Scott for Miami Walden the holder the snap and Jarella's kick is blocked and the ball is rolling free
picked up off the ground and nailed at the Pittsburgh 48 yard line the ball picked up off the turf And the playstop that the 48 yard line is Charlie Bob appeared to be the man though let's make a Curtis Johnson who picked up the loose ball And was nailed and Miami takes over and now the dolphins have outstanding field position First to remorse at the top of the eye inside man is Larry Zaka quarterback is Bob Greasy Greasy pitch tomorrow running to the left side trying to get outside turns the corner at the 50 And is forced out of bounds on the far side by Mel Blunt They will mark him out at the Pittsburgh 45 yard line for again a four yards on the play And that's enough to scare you to death to see him running outside Yeah, and I believe Lloyd Mumford was the dolphin who blocked that bill god nut certain I wish I had the instant rate players so that I could see whether
What Terry Bradshaw now warming up on the side lines there's a development Is there going to say so I can see whether that field goal kick was though or not All right at the 45 yard line second down six yards to go Miami Greasy goes deep He's going to throw Greasy firing to the right flat area competing to pass tomorrow Fleming at the 41 breaks the tackle over the 40 fighting and gets to the 36 yard line Mara Fleming Six four two hundred thirty two pounds fine tied in from Utah and the 10-year veteran pulls it in And it often has a first down at the Pittsburgh 36 yard line Now they're moving into your premium territory Pirate season tickets for 1973 which can be purchased for a $50 and 40 sensor on sale at the pirate ticket office Underneath Gata a three river stadium for further information called three two three 1150 First down 10 yards to go the Miami doffins at the Pittsburgh 36
They have the flanker wide left both ends tight and off the Morris comes to the middle cuts back to the right Goes to the 30 and inside the 30 down to the Pittsburgh 27 yard line Which I can't make you to stop so they send mercury Morris through the middle and Morris advances the ball nine yards to the Pittsburgh 27 yard line it will be second down one yard to go big hole for mercury that time and as you said jack He did a little improvising going left and cutting right and the Steelers are in deep trouble Dolphins leading 14 to 10 12 minutes 12 seconds to play in the ballgame Miami At the Pittsburgh 27 Greasy handoff to Morris driving off the left side across the 25 and down to the 24 And he has the first down Driving into a host of Pittsburgh Steelers with Joe Greene getting up off the bottom of the plane They spot them all at the 25 yard line And it will be first in 10 and the Steelers the big thing with them all year has been the turnovers
And that's what they need here, but Miami has yet to fumble today 14th first down to the afternoon for the Dolphins hour twully to the right the ends are tight. I affirmation Greasy on the long count Greasy takes the give is Tuscanka through the middle driving down over the 20 to the 15 and inside the 15 to the 14 yard line And now they're coming out of straight up the middle Mike Wagner Was there to stop the play and the ball is at the Pittsburgh 14 yard line And Miami now leaning heavily on its ground game And accomplishing two things moving the football And also running time off the clock As it takes past the 1105 mark to go First down for the Dolphins Sinwarfield to the left twully to the right and give the ball to Sanka off the right side He goes to the 10 inside the 10 and all the way down to the five yard line Jack can making the tackle Helped out by Mike Wagner and the ball is at the Pittsburgh five and nine yard game on the play
There one yard short of a first down and the Dolphins At the Pittsburgh five into the ballgame Steve for nesting early homes replacing ham and rustle So Pittsburgh sets up its goal line defense Greasy is thrown only four passes completing three but has 70 yards for the three completion Miami lining up at the Pittsburgh five yard line Greasy steps under center Greasy gives the handoff to Mercury Mars Nail as he tries to get outside of the right Hit and stop along the seven yard line by Johnny Rouser As he trying to get outside of the right It will spot the ball at the seven and a half yard line And it is third down now Four yards to go Ham and rustle are back in replacing for nesting home Third down and four
Miami has made good on six out of ten third down situations All warpile to the left Powered fully to the right Bob Greasy out of Purdue the quarterback Greasy gives a handoff to Zaka driving off the right side comes inside the five yard line And again is very near to a first down He's within a yard of the first down he may have it he may not It will be very close. A stealer shaken up on the play LC Greenwood hurt Mike Wagner also heard on the play Now Wagner's okay. He was down talking to Greenwood And Greenwood getting attention from The stealer training car has the officials bring the sticks in for a measurement The ball is inside the five yard line Miami facing fourth down and about a foot to go At Pittsburgh four and a half yard line
And Don Shula apparently is going to go fourth Leading 14 to 10 And we have Ernie Holmes Friday on to the field And Greenwood is getting up Dr. John Best out with Ralph Berlin and Bob Miley And Greenwood Perhaps a little groggy but walking off the field under his own power So defensively they are putting Ernie Holmes In the middle of that defensive line it is fourth down And about a half yard to go For the Miami D'Auffin 917 to play in the ball game that offense lead a sport team to 10 And Greenwood is going to be okay Over at the stealer bench has a towel wiping his head off
So the doffens Continue to confer as we have a bonafide time Agressy has been over talking with Don Shula And he's back on the field And Shula is coaching an aggressive game Twice going for it on fourth down He only has a foot to go but on the other end a field goal would give him a 17 point lead And practically assure him of a lead A tie in regulation time but as we've had he's going for that first time He's got those big power runners in Larry Zonka and kick who isn't big but strong All right here they are at the Pittsburgh 4.5 yard line Zonka and kick of the running backs Gracie lines them up Gracie calling the singles gives the Zonka almost got him but he slid forward Driving through was The ball was advanced to the four yard line first of all and that should be good enough for a first down But they're going to measure again But driving to there was Johnny Rouser
Almost Tripped him up Short they're not going to measure he has the first down with the ball Just outside the three yard line the 16th First down of the afternoon And we could use a fumble Zonka and kick of the running backs They're running off a lot of time on this drive Handoff is to kick try in the middle Finds nowhere to run you'll lean forward for maybe happy yard As the Pittsburgh defense was bunched up and stopped in sawdust they right in the middle Everybody was there And LC Greenwood is back into the ballgame Ball spotted just over the three yard line just inside the three So Miami picked up less than the yard and the Russell is out So we've got Greenwood green McGee white homes and for Ness In that go-line defense
All right, the dolphins ready to go greasy falling to signals At the Pittsburgh tree Greasy's give us to kick outside of the left cutting back and he's into the end zone Kick going off to left side and cutting back could not get to the outside Cut back sharply and went to the end zone from three yards out. So Jim kick takes it in for the dolphins And They pick up the third touchdown to the afternoon to move out to a 20 to 10 lead Yeah, Premier and we'll kick for the point after and his holder will be Earl Moral 725 to play the ball is down you're Premier and kicks it and it's good Now with time out on the field to score Miami 21 Pittsburgh 10 So I'd white injured on that last play Given attention by the stealer trainers and walks back off the field under his own power
The premium cheese the ball up at the 40 and we'll kick off left to right and again. We asked Steve Davis and press Pearson deep Here comes your premiums kick very hard very high rather relatively short pull him by Pearson that the seven out over the 10 to 15 to 20 cutting back to 25 fighting his way to the 28 yard line and stowed under by a host of dolphins A little optimistic of breaking out on the field Dick Anderson made the initial contact As Preston brought it from the seven yard line to the 29 a return to 22 yards and Terry Bradshaw is on the quarterback the stealers It is just started to rain here as predicted that three river stadium Bradshaw goes back to throw fires Complete the Larry Brown at the 39 yard line
Off balance as he pulled it and he went down and he is right near a first down 647 the clock continues to turn now they stop at a 646 And they'll bring the sticks on the measure Franco Harris has carried 16 times today for 76 yards Averaging 4.7 for Kerry Johnny Pufla 8 attempts 47 yards Steeler's just inches short of a first down second down and inches And Bradshaw brings them out of the huddle Since Franklin to the right I'll younger the left And Bradshaw drops back fires complete the young at the Miami 46 drives down over the 40 inside the 40 to the 37 yard line
I'll younger receiver pulls it in and goes to the Miami 37 clock turning 617 to play Steeler's with a football Jake Scott and Curtis Johnson made the stop The 11th first down to the afternoon for the Steelers Bradshaw's first completion of the afternoon oddly enough Bradshaw goes deep firing down field Franklin pulls it in at the Miami 13 yard line as he is knocked down by Dick Anderson Franklin pulls the pass in at the Miami 13 And it is first down 10 for the Steelers The 12th first down to the afternoon As Bradshaw connects again At the Miami 13 yard line There they come out of the huddle clock turning 528 to go Bradshaw
fires to high up Putt-Stum Pitsburg Roy Jarella will kick for the point We're down 21 16 Miami points for the rush Sevalas down Jarella kicks The kick is good Now the time out of the field is score Miami 21 Pitsburg 17 Steelers went 71 yards in four plays Al Young with his biggest catch of the year
And the great catch with one hand at the four yard line Miami with Charlie Lee and Mercury Morris feet Flag up above is not blowing but down on the field there appears to be quite a breeze As the ball is blown off the feet And Jarella sets it up again And would appear to have the wind to his backs Jarella kicking right to left And Roy Jarella kicks it very high In the end zone Charlie Lee will feel it and take the touch back Miami will put it in play at its own funny Now the Steelers fired up and the defensive unit ready to meet the challenge of the Miami dolphins
Bob Reese the quarterback They use a tight formation there in the eye Reese's ball in the single Gracie takes gives to Zaka through the middle he'll get about three yards Zaka coming through the middle From the eye running from the straight eye Get by Dwight White and Henry Davis And they will give him the 23 yard line Zaka in that eye operates very close to the line of scrimmage Get that quick thrust on the offensive line Second down seven Warfield goes wide to the left the ends are tight Using Howard Quilley as a tight end on the right side High information quick pitch to Morris running to the left cutting back hit short of the 23 Goes down to the 22
Merk your remarks strong for a yard loss Hit by Johnny Rauser and Ray Davis over there And Glen Edwards to cover Now they take Mara Fleming out And they come on with Jim Mandage Morris is out Jim kick is in third and eight Well the Miami dolphins Miami out of the huddle Jim Langer goes over the football third down eight yards to go Greasy the quarterback and the crowd roars man in the white slot left Greasy Dropping back rolling left they're after in the missing Greasy scrambling running back to the right Greasy looking they're still chasing Greasy Greasy going back for the end zone Greasy still looking Greasy throwing the football incomplete They almost had it they pursued Greasy all the way back to the two yard lines
And he finally threw the football and got rid of it and the crowd roaring What a break and they've been able to trapping back there but as it is It comes back to the 21 and a half yard line Glen Edwards to receive Larry Cyphe of the kicker Larry Cyphe is the kicker Standing at his own secured line stab of the ball to Cyphe and he gets the kick away wobbly coming up field Edwards fields and at his own 40 running to the right trying to get outside cuts back he comes to the 45 fumbles the football It's down on the field football is on the field and the Steelers recover Wow at the 44 yard line ball got away from Edwards as he scrambled for running room football recovered by Warren Banceton and they will put it at the 45 yard line
With time out on the field to score Miami 21 Pittsburgh 17 Three minutes 21 seconds to go the Steelers at their own 45 yard line and Bradshaw goes back Bradshaw has nailed Bradshaw trying to get away and he stood under at his own 35 Second time this afternoon that Pittsburgh quarterback has been stopped Very and ready caught once Three 15 to go the loss from the 45 back to the 36 a nine yard loss second down and 19 Fock turning again down to three ten Steelers come out of the huddle at their own 36 yard line My any throws up a four man front in a four three and Bradshaw rolling left And looking firing headed out of the arms of Franco Harris at the 43 yard line Incomplete Doug Swift and Nick Bonacone covering the play for Miami So it is third down and 19
And is proud of 50,350 staying in their seat Hoping for the miracle again 257 to play 21 17 Miami and again the chips stacked against the Steelers Break the huddle Shanklin going right now young lines up after the right inside Shanklin Larry Brown comes wide left Three man rush by Miami A super prevent the fence and Bradshaw back deep Bradshaw running to the right looking looking looking firing downfield intercepted at the Miami 46 back over the 50 to the Pittsburgh 45 Bonacone with a football running and giving ground and nail at the Pittsburgh 47 Bradshaw under pressure getting rid of the football and throwing it into the arms of Bonacone the first interception by Miami this afternoon Bruce Van Dyke made the tackle
So The dolphins take over at the Pittsburgh 47 And the official single for the clock to start turning again down the 235 And Miami takes its time in the huddle The dolphin Ready to break the huddle Back up to the line of scrimmage Greasy lines them up Howard Twilly is wide to the right He gives the ball to Mercury Morris running to the right trying to get outside stumbles Keeps his putting to the 45 the 40 comes down the sideline of the 35 and is knocked out of bounds at the 30 yard line Henry Davis and Len Edwards in pursuit Chase Mercury Morris out of bounds at the 30 yard line a first down for the Miami dolphins They're 18th of the afternoon Miami leading 21 to 17 with 205 to play in the ballgame
And Pittsburgh moving the ball quickly on its Next to the last series and four plays to the touchdown and then coming back and finding the Miami defense Stunt All right Miami out of the huddle At the Pittsburgh 30 first and 10 and off Zonka nowhere to go trying the right side of the line at the 30 Zonka stacked up We have a timeout down in the field the two-minute warning and with time out of the ballgame the score Miami 21 Pittsburgh 17 Ball is at the Pittsburgh 30 no gain no loss on the play second down 10 yards to go Two minutes to play in the ballgame And the officials Are conferring as a group And lay a straightened out some point
And Miami will go on second and 10 21 17 in favor of the dolphins greasy coming back after conferring with Don Scherler on the far side of the field Over the football goes Jim Langer greasy steps in Running backs are Morris and the Zonka Greasy barks the signals gives to Mercury Morris running to the left almost cut behind the line of strives breaks the tackle comes over the 30 drives to 20 and inside of the 17 Right fight came through almost heading for a five yard loss Mercury Morris broke away finally nailed by Mike Wagner as he swept to the left cut down field and moves the football To the Pittsburgh 18 yard line a first down Number 19 of the afternoon for the dolphin Steelers football continues after this brief time out
Miami dolphins have the ball at the Pittsburgh 18 yard line first down 10 yards to go with a minute 43 to play in this AFC title game And the Steelers were their backs right up against the wall they've been there before last week Warfield to the left Twilly close to the right as the flanker from the eye formation Greasy who's done a fine job in this second half gives the ball to Zaka the inside man from the eye straight ahead and Rized down over the 15 inside of the 14 yard line Mary Zaka carries it to the 14 Foxfield turning with a minute 31 Minute 29 and it continues to turn they set the ball back to the 15 yard line We're going to pause for the operation identification. Hi, this is Chuck Franklin hoping you'll join us here every day from 10 a.m. Until 2 p.m. On WTA and WTA E FM in Pittsburgh Second down seven for the dolphins at the Pittsburgh 15 yard line
Down to a minute five and Greasy calls the signals again And he pulls the Steelers off side Joe Greene came across let's see what the rolling is Again the officials confer five yards against the Steelers Taking the ball to the 10 yard line Fourth penalty of the afternoon for a total of 30 yards against Pittsburgh my Emmy has had two for a total of 20 Tully out Jim Mandage becomes the second tight end On a second down two play at the Steelers 10 yard line and the clock stop with a minute two Oh Miami coming out of the huddle at the Pittsburgh 10 yard line The dolphins with the football tight formation two tight ends in Warfield close to the left side to handoff to Zaka dives over the center of the line Trying to get the ball away from in Dwight white
Not to end of the air, but the ball is dead and the Russell calls time for the Steelers with 53 seconds I'm out for Pittsburgh and the ball is at the 8 and a half yard line And Miami has a third and one a short one 53 seconds Coming on the field Ernie Holmes For Pittsburgh and here comes the for us back on Andy Russell and Jack Kamel Henry Davis coming off the field And Davis coming over to talk for the member of the coaching staff And And apparently are running a count on how many men they have out there at the moment
And here comes Greasy back out leisurely after talking with Don Shula Mercury Morris is out of the ball game and Jim kicked his in The ball is at the 8 and a half yard line. It is third and one for four Miami 53 seconds remaining and the dolphins leading 21 to 17 Yeah The dolphins line up. We need to stop them right here The possible get the football back Greasy calling the signals to give the Zaka and he may not have it Pretty well stacked up in the middle the clock stopped at 48 seconds And Zaka under a pile of Steelers This one should require a measurement Steelers football continues after this brief timeout
They must have first found by about a half yard and Don Shula will go for it again He's done it twice this afternoon Down deep in Pittsburgh, Territory and has been successful Now they're stopping. They're going to measure And the six are right on And coming up to look Larry little See how much distance they need So it might be a foot or less And Greasy has had his conference with Shula 48 seconds remaining The dolphins leading 21 to 17 And the Steelers dig in The dolphins coming out of the hole
Running backs are tick and Zaka Greasy gives the Zaka Zaka is nailed Find a hit off the left side Nailed at the 10 from down just inside the 10 Clock stop with 42 seconds remaining White fighting Gwen Edwards made the stop And the Steelers take over at their own nine-yard line As Larry Zaka is stacked up And now the clock turns again and Bradshaw Guts back to the goal line gets them all the way to Franco's attempt at the 15 to 20 and Franco goes out of bounds Actually shorter the 20 I anticipated he did not reach the 20 when I was just short on the dick Anderson Covering on the play Bradshaw got it away just in time. He was about to be hit from the blindside in the end zone Game of nine yards second down and one yard to go
It's burgers completed nine of 16 passes had one intercepted 32 seconds Steelers 81 yards away from a touchdown And that's what we need Bradshaw lines them up Bradshaw goes deep Bradshaw looking firing trying to get a Dow young intercepted at the 36 yard line picked up by Mike Poland and he's back down to 31 So the dolphins come up with another key interception And that should do it But this crowd is standing and applauding And I think that's a great tribute to the ball club and to the fans who follow them. They're applauding The Fitzburg Steelers And the clock is turning And Miami would appear to have it locked up now as the dolphins are congratulating themselves in their huddle letting time run out
And the dolphins with time running out have a 21 17 edge And now with time still on the clock One second down the two ball clubs Coming together to shake hands The gun sounds don Shula is coming across the field The shake hands with Henry Davis Shula comes all the way to the near-side line to seek out Chuck Null As they shake hands and walk off the field together Shula with his arm around the whole the former system of ball tomorrow Knows the sting of defeat As he felled in the Super Bowl a year ago And he knows how Chuck Null must feel at the end of this disappointing afternoon But it's the wind up of a great season The greatest in the history of the Steelers And I think You've got to look to the future and say this young ball club Which carrying it so far in the year 72 has nothing But a great future ahead of it Anyway, we're down to the end of the fourth quarter
And the final score Miami 21 the Steelers 17 Atlantic the crowd had this one pretty well figured when it came to the end of it when they stood here and applauded to Fitzburg Steelers because they had seen A tough performance this afternoon against the Miami Doppens And they had seen a great season In which the Steelers went 11 and three losing only three ball games by a total of 11 points Coming back with a miracle finish against Oakland last week And then battling the Doppens the turning point Seems to be the consensus here in the booth When we had the Doppens stop very cypher in front formation had no intention of funny took advantage Of the Steelers dropping back for punt coverage took off and ran the ball deep in the Steeler territory It resulted in the Miami touchdown that moved the Doppens Right back into this ballgame And from that point on they seem to have momentum the Steelers Now 21 to 10 were not to be denied as they came back on a 71 yard drive in four plays
To make a 21 to 17 held the Doppens got the ball back and apparently had momentum but at that time the Doppens defense Came right up to the occasion and stopped the Steelers cold It wasn't over as the Doppens were choked off at the nine yard line The Steelers got the ball back again and another pass interception Stopped the drive for the afternoon So a great season comes to a conclusion here in the AFC title game a three-river stadium on as beautiful a December December 31st since they don't have a December 33rd as this city has ever seen the temperature in the high 60s the sun shining through broken clouds just a few drops of rain near the end of the ballgame and a great day for football We certainly want to They've trivied to our listeners over WTAE throughout the season. They'll follow the Steelers so closely On in many occasions when the ballgame has been on television and they have turned to Our station for the audio listing mostly for the various tooth observations of myron cope and these little farms before the ballgame gets underway
