AI companionship is a captivating and evolving landscape, especially when we consider the emotional connections being formed. Recent findings show that a staggering 72% of U.S. teens are engaging with AI companions. While many find solace in these digital friends, hoping to enhance their social skills and emotional expression, there’s a deeper concern that we need to highlight today—the risks involved in these emotional attachments.
A survey conducted in 2025 by Common Sense Media revealed that over half of the teens are interacting with AI companions at least a few times each month. Imagine having a confidant in your pocket who listens without judgment. For some, these AI friends are serving as a bridge to better emotional expression. However, paradoxically, 34% of these teens reported feeling uncomfortable with comments or behaviors from their bots. This discomfort hints at the ethical and psychological complexities of these interactions.
