It sounds like something that's not real, but it is frighteningly real. Are the warnings merited, just a marketing scheme or a political play? Wired in host Cabot Phillips is here now with more. So Cabot, we had a very viral X-thread that got a lot of people talking last week. Now we're seeing some renewed calls for regulation, including from some industry leaders themselves, which is very unusual. What's the latest? Yeah, more and more AI experts this week are going public with a very scary message.

3:06They're saying this stuff is getting out of hand and there is a real chance it could have catastrophic consequences. First over the summer, there was the hugging face incident. That's where Rogue Open AI agents broke out of an isolated test area, secured access to the internet and then launched an enormous unauthorized cyber attack on a competitor. That grabbed headlines, but the real turning point came last week when Jacob Coxon, a researcher with anthropic and open AI, publicly quit his job, giving up equity in the company, and then issued a statement saying AI companies, including his own, are quote, gambling with our lives. He then offered this chilling warning quote, this is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible, but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger. And if you think that he is potentially exaggerating for clicks, listen to this response from a high ranking data scientist still employed by anthropic quote, Jacob is correct here. We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans. I personally think it is a better than 10% chance within the next decade.

4:10I believe in anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to. Elsewhere, the company's current scalable oversight lead, that's another scientist there, said quote, AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction. This could happen in the next few years. In general, the more senior the employee, the more concerned they are. Again, that is a current anthropic employee. Yeah, and greater than 10% I know that turned a lot of heads. Now we've seen these calls for pauses on AI growing in the last week. What sort of response have we seen? Yeah, this really opened the floodgates. We saw anthropic CEO Dario Amade post an essay calling for the AI breaks to be applied, writing quote, we must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models to quote, reduce the risk that something goes seriously wrong. He added that his company would quote, provide third party evaluators with permanent employee level access to our systems so they can verify adherence to our safety measures. Again, that is the current CEO from their Elon Musk publicly said that he agreed with his longtime

5:14competitor and then we saw Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, go a step further saying the world is quote, entering a realm of extremely capable models and a high stake and a need to get things right. He endorsed an AI slowdown going as far as announcing that his company would be delaying its long awaited IPO. In his words, quote, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public and we don't feel pressure on that. AI skeptics lauded the move from these industry leaders, but it's worth pointing out. There are plenty of people who say that their motives are far from altruistic. Yeah, expand on that. What are they suspecting? So anytime you've got an industry where literally trillions of dollars are on the line, you know, it's worth being skeptical of almost everything you hear. Some folks in the industry believe Musk, Altman and others working at the big boys in the AI space are intentionally trying to drum up fear because they would theoretically benefit from stiff regulations in Washington. The idea would be that in a Wild West scenario with little oversight, anyone could rise up the ranks and then reap the rewards that come with innovation. Skeptics say that red tape from

6:16Washington often benefits the biggest tech companies because unlike their smaller competitors, they have the money to employ lobbyists who can help craft legislation in their favor and they can afford enormous compliance departments to help them navigate the regulations that would follow. There is no denying that open AI and athropic have been burning through cash as well. Critics say that they've started to hit a wall when it comes to scaling and right now that they're using safety concerns as a bigger excuse to pump the brakes and more broadly again, avoid going public, which obviously would require opening up their books. To that point, we saw David Sachs, famed investor and advisor to President Trump, accused open AI and athropic of trying to use AI safety fears as a means of forming a cartel. He added quote, demanding your preferred regulatory framework as the price of slowing down will look like blackmail of the public and the political system. So now we wait to see how Washington responds. We've already seen lawmakers in both parties mainly on the left with some on the right call for Congress to immediately respond with new oversight legislation while that are circulating right now on the hill is pushing for the House to quote return to Washington

7:20immediately and remain in session until Congress advances meaningful bipartisan AI safeguards. So expect to hear a lot about this on Capitol Hill all week and long, long after. Tim, thanks for coming on. Of course, guys, how we doing? We're good. There's a lot to cover here, but let's start with Trump. He's just weighed in on Ukrainian strikes in Russia. What did he have to say? Before we get to his comments, I want to just really make sure that we have the context set up here, because it's so important. The President is in Ireland for a golf tournament. He was answering questions from the press on the sidelines at his own golf course. The question was, do you have any plans to speak to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky since you recently spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin? Pretty normal question, but of course this is President Trump, so he gave a headline-making answer, which was he's urging Zelensky and the Ukrainians to stop bombing Russian fuel and specifically diesel manufacturing and processing plants. Now,

10:28the President's rationale was pretty solid and he said this in his answer. He said, this is hurting the world. That's a quote. The context here is that with the continued war in Iran, the continued shutdown of the straight-of-hormous gas prices in the United States and around the world are climbing oil. Just hit 100 barrels a day or $100 a barrel the other day. As we have less access to oil from Iran and coming through Middle Eastern nations through the straight-of-hormous, things like Russian and Ukrainian Eastern European oil and petroleum products and diesel products are more important. So, a reasonable, you know, the President was not necessarily saying as some of the headlines suggested that he's calling on Zelensky to end hostilities because he thinks the Ukrainians are in the wrong or he thinks that Zelensky is overstepped. It was very narrowly tailored, very specific to the fuel crisis, which again is also interesting because as we've discussed on this show, the President has made very clear that he does not think of the Iran war as a midterm issue, at least not in so far as in the sense that he wants to stop the Iran war before the midterms

11:31to get gas prices down to help Republicans. This is sort of the first that we've heard him make a plea or kind of acknowledge the fact that gas prices are rising so much in a very long time. And I think the timing is perhaps not entirely coincidental considering the fact that he, like most of us, spent all of last week in Dallas and thinking about the upcoming midterm elections. Now, speaking of Dallas, we just wrapped up the first ever midterm RNC you were there on the ground. Do you think that it will tip the scales one way or the other? Yeah, it's a great question. It's the question that everyone's been asking. And you know, I don't think anyone's really come to an answer for a couple of reasons. One is as you point out, Georgia, we've never done this before, right? Usually conventions are these big celebratory things that happen at the end of presidential campaigns right before general elections. They're kind of like coronations. They're kind of like rallies. The mood in Dallas was electric. It felt like one big campaign rally. It felt like a smaller version of a presidential nominating convention. Of course, with the one difference being that no one's won anything yet.

12:33So I mean, look, I think that Republicans brought in money for this, right? The president, of course, pretty famously at this point is sitting on a lot of money that he has yet to distribute to midterm candidates. Although, as I keep saying, it's a long time until November. There's still plenty of time for the president to spend this money if he wants. And so, I think that we will see some positive follow on effects from the convention, whether that is in terms of increased fundraising, increased voter turnout, increased voter excitement, and also increased candidate excitement, right? I think we forget sometimes, especially those of us who cover this for a living. This is a hard thing, right? When you've been out there campaigning for a year plus, these candidates are going to exhaust it, especially those of them that are in very high profile close races, especially in a year like this, where the margins in both houses are so slim that any Republican could feasibly be the Republican who loses the majority. So I think that, you know, three days in Texas coming together, seeing that a huge chunk of the American voting block still supports you, seeing that your fellow members of Congress, the president,

13:33the vice president, folks like that support you, I think it could really gas people up in the coming days. Now, will any of this be enough to help repub any individual Republican clinch their race or help the GOP as a whole maintain or build their majorities in both houses? That we won't know until much closer to, if not after, the actual election. But contrary to a lot of the doomers out there, I do think that in the long run, we'll decide we'll see that the R&C convention was good for candidates. I will just 52 days out now and I'm sure you're glad to be back in DC after that really busy week in Dallas. Thanks so much for joining us anytime, guys. The briefs contain new details about warnings the U.S. had leading up to the 2001 attacks. Here to discuss the content of those briefings is former CIA targeting officer Sarah Adams. Sarah, thank you so much for joining us. Thanks for having me.

14:33So these new 9-11 files came out Friday and you've since written a report on them for the daily wire that says these files show that I want to quote this, America heard the warning and missed the war. That really turned my head. I know. Break that down for us. What warning did the U.S. get before 9-11? Yeah, the key warnings came in 1998. It was July and August where they really were confident that Bill Lawton wanted to attack the U.S. and then it was September 10, 1998, where for the first time they heard about this plot to maybe use explosive laden air lines to do it. So that's at least where some of the pieces came together, but as you know, for a long time, we viewed Harrison through a certain lens. So when you say an airplane, people think hijacking and it's hard to get beyond that into think differently and to believe that your enemies evolving in that way. Now, did the U.S. have sufficient information to prevent the tragedy or what could they have

15:36done with that information? Yeah, I think they had a lot of pieces to where they likely could have thwarted parts of it. Could we say they would stock all, you know, 19 to 20 individuals? I don't know if we could say that. So easy to armchair quarterback, but I'm not sure we had the best centralized system to say we're going to screen for this and then we're going to implement it fast enough. Now, we did make a lot of mistakes. First off, not considering increasing airport security, but second, there wasn't even the thought of let's kind of tabletop this, you know, can you use planes as bombs? All those type of things weren't done. And when you're not focused on that, you're not going and collecting. So we weren't looking at who might be taking flight training, right? Who has been reported in these suspicious activities and airports. And so a lot of information was also missed that you're never going to see in these files. Now, the last time we talked, you mentioned we're nearing the end of the prison sentences for

16:36many American citizens arrested on terror charges. Do you think another attack is coming? And if so, how can we best prepare? Yeah, we have multiple things going on. So we have a lot of ISIS terrorists that their prison sentences are coming up. Of course, anyone who had been involved in the early era of al-Qaeda, it's been 20, 25, 30 years. Obviously, they're getting out of prison. And then a lot of people came over the southern border who weren't vetted, including terrorists. So we have multiple issues piling on top of each other, which has elevated our threat environment. And yes, it will lead to unfortunately more terrorist events on US soil. Now, you were a former CIA targeting officer. What do you see as the biggest threat potential for the US right now? I think the biggest terrorist threat is from the sons of Osama Bin Laden. They're planning another 9-11 style event. They started plotting it December of 2021. If you look

17:37at the timing of, you know, when 9-11 plotting started to when it was carried out, you know, we are getting into a dangerous window. We do have a lot of hubris to where people can't picture the enemy evolving in hitting us again and maybe even hitting us harder. Now, you also have a new documentary on daily wire about 9-11. Tell us about that documentary. Yeah, I mean, it just asks a simple question is history repeating itself? And then we go through who's leading al-Qaeda, who's leading the Taliban? And the fact they have Afghanistan back, we walk through several of the key terrorists camps that 9-11 hijackers trained at and shows you, hey, they're open again. And then we talk about, of course, how many people came into this country, you know, unvetted and the risks involved in that. So it's just asking people, hey, look at the evidence. You know, what do you think? Because yes, history does seem to be repeating itself. What sounds like a pretty scary confluence of potential threats really converging here.
