Alaska Voters to Decide on Citizen Voting

to strengthen the state's ban on non-citizen voting.

Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom announced Tuesday that the initiative qualified after

organizers turned in more than 34,000 valid. Signatures surpassing the needed 34,098 from

at least 30 house districts. The group behind it, Alaskans for Citizen Voting, includes three

former Republican state lawmakers. They want to tweak existing law by adding one word,

changing it from allowing citizens to vote, to saying only citizens may vote. Supporters

argue this clears up any confusion in the current wording. Opponents worry the change might

mislead people into thinking non-citizens can vote now, which they cannot under Alaska

law. There's no proof of widespread non-citizen voting problems here, or nationwide, despite

claims from some Republicans. Funding comes mainly from billionaire donor, Dick Uileen,

through his groups. The measure heads to the November 3rd ballot, or the August 20th

primary, if lawmakers wrap up early. Meanwhile, a federal bill in the Senate pushes proof
