Colorado Rockies fans finally have a spark of hope after Ezekiel Tovar’s breakout World Baseball Classic performance. Can Tovar’s fiery leadership and elite bat turn around one of MLB’s worst teams? Sully and Paul Holden unpack Tovar’s rising star, Michael Lorenzen’s arrival, and whether new manager Warren Schaefer can modernize the Rockies' approach.
Roster shakeups, an influx of young talent, and aggressive base-stealing signal a shift for Colorado. The hosts debate improvements in the starting rotation and how veterans like Kyle Freeland support a lineup anchored by Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Hunter Goodman. Will prospects like Charlie Condon accelerate the rebuild, and could Mickey Moniac become valuable trade bait? The Rockies’ uphill battle in a stacked NL West sets the stage for bold moves—and fans won’t want to miss what comes next.

We're going to be doing our MLB top 100 highlight.
Now I mentioned this is a crossover episode, which means I am not flying solo today.
I am Paul Francis Sullivan, I said, I need another Paul Francis here.
So I went to the highest peak in our country, and I said, give me another Paul Francis.
And they said, here's Paul Francis holding of Lockdown Rockies, how you doing, buddy?
I'm good.
Hello, Sally.
Always a pleasure to be talking ball with you here.
All right.
By the way, before we're going to be talking a little bit about the Colorado Rockies who
last year had a, let's call it a down year, they avoided 120 losses.
So let's, that, that's seen the glasses, one eighth full, and there is talent on this
team, and I actually think, look, do I think they're going to win the world series this
year?
I think I'm not going to go to Fand will put much money down on that.
But when you hit bottom, sometimes the trip up isn't as long as you'd think.
And I think there are some pieces that I think look forward to.
Like I got a quick question to ask you, though, Paul, before we move on, we're going to
talk about the Rockies in this episode, we're going to talk about the NL West in general
where the Rockies fit in that.
And what teams that they think that they could try to pass, it's kind of like that movie
F1, where they're just, they're in the back.
Well, let's start passing a few of the cars and see how far we can get those, we're
moving forward.
But quick question, did you watch the World Baseball Classic Final last night?
I absolutely did.
You mentioned an exciting young talent and Team Venezuela shortstop, Ezekiel Tovar.
That's right.
That's the reason I brought it up because, and I brought this up a couple of times during
the World Baseball Classic that one of the reasons why Team Venezuela won, and we talked
about this with Justin Lotten on a couple of the early shows, is they had a bunch of hitters
who may not have been the Superstars, may not have been Judge or Bryce Harper or Carl
Schwarber, but they were annoying.
They're smart.
They go first to third.
And Tovar of the Rockies got a terrific showcase in this year's World Baseball Classic and was
a big, big part of Venezuela's victory.
Maybe not always with, you know, the overall stats, but whenever there was a rally, whenever
there was a comeback, whenever there was something going on, Tovar was always in the middle
of it.
Yeah.
The, the stage, the moment wasn't too big for him.
This is a guy that's been, that's very young when you're looking at it.
The Rockies handed him the keys when I believe in, in 2021, I think, or very recently, and
he was only like 20 years old.
He's, he's still very young, and he batted 500 in the tournament.
His OPS was like almost 1.5.
He's, he is Yamamoto's kryptonite.
No one can hit Yamamoto, but Ezekiel Tovar picks up a couple of hits and is eight for
11 against him all time.
It was amazing, actually.
It was so great to see not only, I loved the World Baseball Classic.
I thought it was just such tremendous baseball and such an awesome viewing experience.
But for the Rockies to have a guy play a significant role, it wasn't home runs.
It wasn't that, but two for four in a final.
That's exactly what you're hoping for for a guy at that part of the lineup.
He snagged it.
He had some great defense, stole a base as well, I believe, in the tournament for, for,
you know, in a line, yes, whole two bases.
Yeah.
For you to be in a lineup that's got Salvador Perez, Ronald Acunio Jr.
Some of these Luis Arayas for Ezekiel Tovar to be the name that stands out amongst those.
That's for a Rockies fan.
That's exactly what you were hoping to see out of the World Baseball Classic and really
cool to see new, you know, kind of World Baseball Classic legend, quote unquote, Michael
Lorenzen there for team Italy and him and Tovar go and head to head as Lorenzen's now a member
of the Rockies.
But I'm over the moon for the baseball world to meet Ezekiel Tovar.
He is a special player and he wasn't healthy last year.
And that was a big reason why the Rockies were in the situation they were in.
Yeah.
I filled in for you a few years ago when you were, I think you were getting married, right?
Yep.
For my wedding.
Yep.
So I filled in locked down Rockies for about like a week and a half or two weeks.
And I think that was in 2024.
And I got to see, I got to, I watched a lot of Rocks that year.
And Tovar really just impressed me.
He's got, you know, he doesn't have like blazing Ricky Henderson speed, but he's got good
speed.
He's got first to third speed.
He's got good power.
Of course, everyone's power numbers are going to be a little bit increase if you start
a course field.
But I loved, I had a really great time because that was, you know, he was still, I think it
was his second year, if I did before it was his second year in Denver.
And so he hasn't played a lot of meaningful games in Denver, we know, with the Rocks.
But you got to see him play meaningful games.
You got to see him play at a high level.
And you can't help but think for the players, for the hitters who are involved in World
Baseball Classic, to be able to amp up your adrenaline a little bit, other than doing
a split squad game in Winter Haven or wherever you're, you know, wherever you're, you know,
minor league football, sprung training facility is his, by the way, he just, he just came
up so big.
And this is why this is what he's slashed, okay?
His final in the, in the World Baseball Classic of 2026, his batting average was 471.
His on Bains percentage was 500.
So every of the, the old cliche of well, even the best players fail two thirds of the
time.
Like, no, no, he succeeded half the time.
He's slugged 647.
So his OPS, now granted, it's a microscopic sample size.
But so is the World Series, the playoff series.
And while playing, getting the same number of at bats if they gone through a wildcard series
and a, in a division series, his OPS was 1.147.
Yeah.
Was huge in the games, came a big time in the Japan game.
I thought Japan was going to, to give him a forearm shiver to the face.
Mm-hmm.
So Var was right in the middle of that.
Yes.
Set in the tone.
I mean, this is a guy that I think, I mean, like I said, to have that moment, to have
no experience on the, I'm playing at this level of baseball, to be successful against
Team Japan, to be successful against Team USA.
These are some of the best in the business here that that he's gone up against.
And it's just, that is something that's encouraging because this is a guy that I believe
tied or led the league in doubles two seasons ago.
This is a guy that can, that can hit you home runs, play gold glove caliber defense.
This is an all star and a guy that can be the face of your franchise.
And one of my main takeaways to, I love seeing the emotion of Ezekiel Tovar.
We got to, obviously, that, we got to see the emotions of a lot of players and we know
how important it was for them to represent their countries.
But Ezekiel Tovar has kind of been an under the, he's not a big, loud, you know, in your
face type of guy, but to see the energy, to see him.
I saw that as I think he's going to come back and obviously you're going from the highest,
you know, peak of winning a championship, whether it, you know, matter what, that's still
winning a big tournament to returning to the Rockies.
But I think he's going to take away from that being around a euhenio Suarez and some
of these guys.
I think he's going to return as a stronger leader for the Rockies here in a season where
if he's healthy, he has a, he has a real good shot at being the Rockies best player.
Yeah.
And by the way, I want to, and by the way, if I, if I put you your name, I, I humbly, humbly
apologize.
Martin, uh, C, C, Cairo's, I'm going to say C, Cairo's said, unless you live in Venezuela,
um, you don't understand the meaning of the win last night.
And he goes on, he says, a country that's been so broken, this was a moment of hope and
happiness for the rebuilding of a country.
They love baseball more than anyone.
And look at the main thing, you know, I'm an American.
I was pulling for Team USA.
But by the end, what I really was rooting for was a good game.
And we certainly got that.
We got some really terrific games.
And I did not feel badly when they won, I didn't say, um, because you saw what it meant
to everybody.
And obviously one of the nice things about the Olympics, one of the nice things about, um,
the World Baseball Classic and hopefully the World Cup when it's here this year, um,
is that the tensions between countries are being played out on the field and not in a
political arena.
You know, this has not been the best year for American Venezuelan, uh, uh, relations.
And we saw USA versus Venezuela and it didn't turn into something ugly.
It was two teams with legit major league players going at it, both wanting it, both wanting
to win.
You saw the American team was desperate to win that game.
Um, and that was, uh, but I did feel when you saw just the outpouring of emotion at the
end of that, uh, you know, I was like, okay, I'm, I'm okay with this, you know,
it was, it was one of those, yeah, it was just a moment where I was just, this is why
baseball rules.
This is why we love the sport.
This is when baseball is at its peak, when baseball is, is, is played at that level and
you have the intensity and the, and the, and the, and the buy-in from the players that
we see in the playoffs and the World Baseball Classic, that, that's what makes it special
and that is such a special moment for, for the, the entire country of Venezuela and,
and the team that, uh, that, that that represented them and, and you could see how disappointed
and devastated it was for the players for the United States.
They, they, they went in there with, with a lot of expectations and hopes as well.
Well, going from baseball as good as it gets, let's switch gears a little bit and talk
about the Colorado Rockies when we come back.
Sorry, buddy.

And Paul, I know I'm holding you hostage here, but let's just do the trivia question briefly.
Okay.
Okay.
Let's go see it.
It was what team?
Let's see if you know it.
What team eliminated Team USA in the first ever World Baseball Classic?
That was back in 2006.
That was the one where Dice came out to Zaka went to judging.
Hmm.
I'm going to go Puerto Rico.
All right.
You're going Puerto Rico.
We're Harry Edelman, the 9922 said Team Mexico eliminated Team USA in the 2006 WBC by
score two to one.
He's in every day's selling.
I believe that was a series where there was a disputed call of a home run that was done.
Maybe get my WBCs crossed up, but Mexico was playing in a game.
There was a disputed call in a home run that they claim went foul and somehow estup on
Luisa, who at the time was a pitcher for the Oakland A's, got a hold of the ball that
they called foul and he was holding it up showing it had a yellow smear from the foul
pole.
Wow.
And he was holding it up like that.
I, some of please look that up.
Those please look that up.
Folks, we have avoided talking about the Rockies as long as we possibly can.
It was tough last year.
It was tough and you know, they obviously had 119 loss season, which I don't care what
metric you're using.
I don't care what you use for your stats.
That's that that could be better, but are you going to the worst team of all time, Sully?
I mean, worst starter, ERA, they have the worst run differential of all time.
Sure, they narrowly avoided the White Sox record, but if you compare those squads, that
Rockies team was on par for being one of the worst baseball teams, that's seen the major
league field.
I was trying to be positive.
It's that that light air, there's other stuff people do in Denver to relax, but I tell
you one thing, one thing impressed me about the Rocks going into this year was this.
They let go of Bud Black and again, Bud Black's a good baseball man and had some success as
a manager of the Rockies.
It was time to move on.
It was time to move on.
Yeah, it was absolutely time to move on.
They brought in Warren Schaefer, who I wouldn't be able to pick out in the lineup of one
before he was handed in.
I thought it was just a sort of like, all right, we're handing this guy, yeah, you, you
manage while we try to get a real manager in here, and they they kept them in.
They decided to say, hey, look it.
Which makes me think they kind of maybe saw something that said, all right, maybe we
shouldn't have chaos.
Maybe we shouldn't always be turning things over.
Let's hand the car keys over to him for us to give him a chance to have a season, give
him a chance to have some familiarity for some of the players, acknowledge that there
were terrible injuries and everything that were on the team, and give this guy a real
shot.
That kind of impressed me that that's one of the first things they did to try to turn
the page.
Yeah, I think this was actually the right move.
I think Warren Schaefer came up last year and he came from within the Rockies organization.
So familiar with the Rockies players, the younger ones, especially, and the Rockies played
a lot of young guys last year.
I believe they were the second youngest roster in baseball last year.
And you know, I think as they did so much other change, the new pitching coaches, new
hitting coaches, every other coach basically got changed because the Rockies moved on from
that area.
Blood Black, no more a Bill Schmidt fired, let go, however you want to talk about it.
New GM, new president of baseball, there's a whole bunch of change that happened.
So when it came to manager, were you going to go find the next big, great name and managing
to come fix this thing in Colorado?
No, I like sticking with Schaefer in this situation, familiarity with the team.
And this spring, he's gotten to, he's gotten to do things his way.
Blood Black, again, like he said, it was fine, but Blood Black wasn't doing anything to
develop talent.
He wasn't changing the game for the Rockies.
He wasn't getting the most out of his players.
So now Warren Schaefer this spring is they have an individualized training schedule that
works with the players.
They do things differently.
They're embracing a lot more analytics underneath Paul D. Podesta at least so far.
There's a lot of modernizing the game.
And I think Warren Schaefer is, it was a good guy to help bring the Rockies to the modern
game while also having a lot more familiarity with the roster and the players as you brought
in a bunch of people finally from outside of the organization that don't probably have
a very, very little experience or knowledge of some of these guys.
By the way, there was one thing before we go to break here.
I'm going to break down a little bit of the roster and some thoughts going in, but the
Rockies did one thing last year that I always loved one, a team that is, that has low
expectation that they do.
And that is they gave a shot to someone who was a top prospect elsewhere, didn't work
out, but is still young enough to contribute and say, hey, obviously you are someone who
has some ability.
Otherwise you wouldn't have been the first overall pick.
And this is, and Mickey Moniac was the number one overall pick in 2016 and he did not
fare well in what, two and a half seasons in Philadelphia.
And he did, he had half a good season in Anaheim, but then in 2024 he just was bad.
And he wound up with the Rockies and he was just cut, he was just up and up cut by the
angels.
Now granted, course field, I hit four home runs in course last year, and he didn't have
a year that would make anyone forget Larry Walker.
But, you know, he slashed 273 06 518 in an OPS of 824, hit some bombs.
He didn't, you know, he wasn't a terrific player, but he had, he had some production and
he was something they just picked up from the scrap heap and say, hey, you must have some
ability, try us out.
And I like when teams do that.
I like when teams say, we're even shot because they don't pick people with number one overall
because they're, you know, because they're stupid, they did that because they thought
you were talent.
Yeah, and it worked out great.
And I think, you know, the, the one thing we didn't get to see the, a good version of
a Mickey Moniak with the Rockies was defensively.
He was a bit of a, it was a mess, yes, he was a mess.
Good news is the D.H. is in the National League.
So the Rockies now have a guy that is going that fits perfectly in that D.H. role for them.
It frees up an option for their outfield log jam as they go with some other things.
And Mickey Moniak can hit 25 plus has hit the most home runs in his career last year and
can be a guy that will be a power impact bat there for the Rockies.
And if he's got a good enough thing, might be an interesting trade candidate for the Rockies
when it comes to that, the middle of the season.
But I know we got to get to the break here, but going with giving these guys a new chance,
that's what the Rockies did a lot this, this off season.
They're bringing in guys, TJ Rumfield, they trade for a guy that wasn't going to see
time in the Yankee system.
They're bringing in Willie Castro to say, establish himself Jake McCarthy, they're giving
these guys, hey, you guys have potential.
We're giving you an opportunity, a chance now to shine, show something, prove us something,
show us that you can be an everyday starter and help our team win some ball games.
All right.
When we come back, we're going to take a look at that roster and see how far above 50 games
they can pull off this year.
All right.
I am now going to be going over the MLB top 100 highlight, which is brought to you by
MLB the show, 26, the latest of that beloved video game franchise.
Each week we're highlighting the stars of the MLB top 100 players list, the elite names
you'll be controlling, building around and going head to head with an MLB the show.
Now for the player spotlight, at number 11 on the list of top 100, drumroll Paul Holden,
Austin Ace, Garrett Crochet.
He had a Sai Young caliber season in 2025.
He led all of baseball with 255 strikeouts, over 205 into thirds and he's pitched.
He has four scene fastballs, one of the best pitches of the game.
He's got a devastating slider, but guess what?
He could even be better this year.
He's added a new splitter to his repertoire.
So look out, AL Batters, you are going to be in big trouble face of Garrett Crochet.
He is looking to be elite, maybe win that elusive Sai Young award.
He didn't win in Chicago, he didn't win in Boston.
He's may use that splitter to get it now.
And he's looking to be elite, just as MLB the show, 26, is elite with improved and upgraded
ratings, new animations and better gameplay feel.
If you're a baseball fan, look at Crochet is one of your building blocks for your future.
And in the show, you could do exactly that.
And with the WBC, freshen our minds, you could take on World Baseball Classic teams, look
out for Tovar.
And what will your legacy be in the road to the show, MLB the show's career mode?
Will you make it to Cooperstown?
I went to Cooperstown a few years ago, bought a ticket.
That is this week's MLB top 100 highlight presented by MLB the show where you can play,

Yukon and the women's Duke in the men's boy, you're really brave, Sully.
Go bold.
Go Santa Clara or ride with the team you've been following all season.
It's your parlay, your style and now with more upside behind it.
Head to fandual.com to get started.
That's fandual.com.
And do play your game.
All right, the Rockies, they're playing in a division where the, I don't know if you're
where there's a team called the Dodgers.
And I think I'm going to pick the Dodgers ahead of the Rockies this year.
I think they they there's a couple spots that go there.
The Padres are also pretty darn good.
I think they're a high 80 low 90 win team.
The Giants who knows the Giants, you know, and as a clue what the Giants are, not a soul.
They could have a terrific season.
They have a lot of talent on that team.
They've got a manager as much as experience as I do.
This guy makes were in shape or look like Earl Weaver in terms of his experience.
But you don't know how you don't know how things you don't have the Rubik's Cube is going
to turn.
Arizona narrowly missed the playoffs a couple of years ago after going to the World Series.
They were disappointed last year.
It was still a lot of talent.
I think the Rocks are in a situation where they can comfortably say, yeah, we're in fifth.
So let's, let's aim for, let's, let's start to build something here.
So you're the architect and I'm now appointed you GM.
How do you look at this?
I mean, I look at this lineup that includes tovar that includes Hunter Goodman, who's,
was a good player.
You know, Willie Castro plays Good D, Brent and Doyle plays great D.
Jordan Beck has talent, you know, Jake McCarthy has, is going to be great.
It defensively in that outfield.
And their, their starting staff is Freelin and Cantana and Sugano and the Italian Michael
Lorenzon and the, the prospect Chase Dolander.
How many would you think about this lineup and, and the, the staff going forward?
I think it's a better lineup than last year.
It's more, the, I think it's important the Rockies win out and added veteran pitcher.
I obviously, these guys aren't side youngs.
These aren't the most, they weren't the most sought after names and free agency when
you're talking about veteran pitchers to add to your staff.
But statistically, every pitcher they added to their rotation was better than their pitchers
last year with the exception of Kyle Freeland, who gets his fifth opening day, start in
a row.
I think the Rockies will be, again, another team that's going to have a team ERA in the
mid force, close to five, they're, it's not going to be, but I think they're veterans
enough that are going to keep them in games and keep things from getting out of hand early.
That's at least the goal.
So I think these guys with that are excited for the, these guys chose to come to Colorado.
King Kong Lorenzon, these are guys that have pitched in the big leagues for a long, long
time.
And Sugano, he's only had the one year of Major League Baseball experience, but he's
a legend over there in Japan.
These are guys that have studied, breathed, lived baseball, pitch mixes, a whole variety
of tools in the tool belt.
So I think I hope the rotation's improved.
It won't be, it take a lot for it to be better than arguably the worst starting rotation
of all time statistically.
And like we mentioned before, with a healthy Ezekiel Tovar, the Rockies offense is in a much
better spot because I think Ezekiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle and Hunter Goodman all can play,
I'll start caliber baseball.
Brenton Doyle is a gold glove elite defender who, when he, when he, if he can get the consistency
with the bat is a great center fielder, Ezekiel Tovar, like we mentioned, he's got, he can,
he can lead the league in doubles.
And Jordan Beck and Mickey Moniak could be some guys that provide some power and some
thumb there.
And who knows, one thing that I love to see about some of the acquisitions and some of
the stuff in spring, Rockies are going to steal a lot more bases this year.
They want a lot more aggressive on the base path.
So they brought in speed.
They want to use utility players and, and swap out their lineups to take advantage of
the base paths.
So that's going to be something that, that I think will, will help the Rockies.
And the bullpen, hope, you know, young bullpen, but now a bullpen that's got a lot of guys
that have a year, year and change of some experience.
They've pitched at the big league level.
They've had some big moments.
So hopefully they take a step forward.
Now the ceiling for the Rockies is still a great season for this year's Rockies team avoids
100 losses.
If this team wins 65 games, that's a massive success.
You're talking about for the Rockies there to do it.
That's, that's like a, that's near 20 plus, you know, around a 20 game improvement.
So I, it's, they're not going to be the best in the NOS.
They're not going to be the one of the best lineups, but it's full of some interesting
games and some interesting pieces.
And I like the acquisitions the Rockies did to raise the floor of the Rockies from being
as low as it was last year to hopefully a more competitive team with some more veteran
presence there in the starting rotation and some guys hopefully taken some step forwards
and getting some breakout performances from some new names like TJ Rumpfield, who is
probably going to be the first baseman for the Rockies and Kyle Carroll set third base.
You got a little bit of time with the Rockies, but young, exciting guys, hopefully going
to pair with, I think, and exciting three players in Tovar Doyle and Goodman.
And then I'm going to bring up one of their prospects who's played for two teams that
in cities that have emotional connection to me, and that's Charlie Condon, who was their
first round pick a few years ago.
My time at Washington State meant I went to several Spokane Indians games.
And so there you go there.
And I was born in Central Connecticut.
So he played for the Hartford Yard Goats as well.
He really played well in Spokane.
He did not have a good year or a couple of years ago is first year as a pro, but he lit
up Spokane and he has shown some serious pop in Hartford and this spring training.
He's been, he is, he is, he's slashing 389 552 722.
Now that's not, he's going to wind up in either Hartford AA for a full season there
or at least start there or he's going to wind up in AAA.
I'm not saying he's going to be the starting first baseman of the team, but if he continues
to play, this was the guy who's the number three overall pick just a couple of years ago.
And when you, when you are always trying to build pitching and you burn that on, you know,
and there was only one picture picked at that point, they saw something Charlie Condon,
he was picked ahead of Nick Kurtz, by the way.
Um, they saw something in him and he's showing it in spring training.
Yeah, absolutely.
I mean, he was, there was, there was a conversation.
Is he going to win the spot here from the performance?
But from the reports that I've seen from Rocky's media, they want to make sure
that they're not rushing things too much with Charlie Condon.
But what's great about him is he had an injury that, that was a tough for in the bounce back.
He had a great fall league takes a great fall league and that translates to a great spring.
Now we just got to take that great spring, translated into a great season that starts
at the minor league level.
I'm going to say AAA, I, I think the Rockies will put him down there in Albuquerque
and make sure that he's ready to go.
But I think the, the, the, there is a very real chance that Charlie Condon is playing
first base for the Colorado Rockies, come post trade deadline.
I, I, I think the Rockies, if they, if I think the Rockies, if it plays out the way
we think the Rockies sell a couple of pieces at the deadline, they go in the second half
of the season and they, and they can, and give the Charlie Condon a shot.
Because Condon plays a couple other positions.
Yeah, he might not just play first base.
He, he might see some time in the outfield.
He might, he'll probably get some time deaching there as well.
But he is, he has been on enough of a streak where it's time, I think it's, it's exciting
for exciting times for Charlie Condon.
And I think we'll see him in purple at some point this year.
And that'll be after they trade Moniaque, which the, it's essentially
would be found money, which anything can get for him.
