Alice Springs is facing a catastrophic flood risk, prompting urgent calls for better mitigation

from local leaders.

Independent lawmaker Robin Lamley, who was the Northern Territory government, must act

now as insurance premiums for homes are skyrocketing due to the dangers.

Back on February 12th, a flash flood struck after 100 millimeters of rain fell in just

two hours.

The Todd and Charles Rivers broke their banks, peaking at 3.45 meters and 3.85 meters levels

not seen since, 1988.

Residents had terrifying close calls, like one family swept back by rushing water while

rescuing kids and pets.

Now, folks are hit hard financially.

One homeowner's policy jumped from $1,410 with low excesses to over $5,000.

Lams with much higher out of pocket costs and quotes reached $24,000.

Lamley points to decades of government in action, despite a 2016 advisory committee urging

detention basins and raising the steward, highway through heavy tree gap to let water escape

faster.

Other priorities like health and crime have sideline flood fixes.

Insurance counsel head Andrew Hall agrees the lack of mitigation drives up costs nationwide,

calling for $30 billion in federal flood, defenses.

He says better mapping and risk reduction could slash premiums and urges tapping emergency

funds for real change.
