What is up, friends?
Welcome back to attacking.
We've got Lori Lindsay and Jen Beatty in the house.
I'm your host, Darian Jenkins,
and we are coming fresh off of the U.S. women's national team
win over Canada.
We have a very fun show for you today.
We are taking a look at the game,
talking about our individual performances that stood out
on both sides, as well as looking ahead
to the U.S. women's national team
against Colombia this Saturday.
Whether you're here with us live on YouTube,
what's up, jump in the comments,
watching on Gala's on network,
or listening as a podcast.
We appreciate it.
Okay, ladies, before we jump into the game,
fun fact, shout out to our producer,
Audrey, for putting this in our notes for us and our rundown.
I found out that Rose LaVelle,
she's playing at home in Ohio,
is known as Rose Skyline Messy LaVelle.
Now, I had to pause and think,
okay, she left footage.
She's an incredible player like Messy,
but Skyline Messy.
And it made me think,
do you guys have any fun nicknames
from when you were playing
from maybe your hometown,
or just from national team?
No, not Skyline Messy,
but something along the lines of that.
I'm gonna let Lori take the lead on that.
Yes, but I mean, it's nowhere near Skyline Messy.
The big joke with the national team was
I was Lori Lightning Lindsay
because I was not lightning fast,
so that was a joke.
It actually started when Amy Rodriguez
and a bunch of us played on
in the WPS in Philly.
And like, we do, you know,
the that announcer in the stadium
would do all of these like,
say our names right for the starting 11
and they would be like, Amy,
A. Rod Rodriguez.
And we were like, why is she have like the nickname
in the lineups and no one else did?
And so then it started becoming a joke
that I wanted it when I was like,
no, I don't.
Like, I just want to know what's the point.
And then it was already we're already on the national team
together and then it became lightning
and that was a big joke and LOL.
So I don't know about Skyline Messy,
but, you know, it was Lori Lightning Lindsay.
So it came, did it come up to a specific game
where they're like, we're gonna call you Lori Lightning Lindsay
or was it just like, where's the game
where you were just moving slow?
Maybe your legs were heavier.
Was this, oh, yeah, just in general.
Like, listen, everybody,
it was like, if I thought I was fast,
like, baby in club and then you get
to our national team, right?
And it was like the bottom of it was like,
there's 23 of us in KM.
I'm like, with the goalkeepers.
I mean, I can move quick in the midfield, right?
But if you go straight, I mean, listen,
we were, everybody was like, just like,
1% and less of like the top athletes
at this level, right?
And I'm like, scooting around trying to go last.
Yeah, the annoying thing about that
is you probably aren't really fast in normal life.
And then it became like, a self-deprecating joke,
which we love, by the way.
But you are still fast.
I mean, listen, no.
I can move, I can move, right?
I can be in the chair.
Anyway, I like Skyline Messi.
I'd never heard that one before too.
So, and then the joke between all of us was like,
is it because of Skyline Chilly from Cincinnati?
But who knows?
So if anybody in the chat knows, please.
Yeah, before we jumped on,
Lori gave us a little loadout on some Midwest
Chilly things.
So if anybody knows anything more to that,
please let us know.
But Jen, did you, did you have any nicknames like that?
You had to.
I mean, I had the classic.
I was five foot 10 from about 12 years old.
So I was automatically like,
Big Beats pretty quickly.
Big Beats was too easy.
I love these alliterations.
It was like, Lori, Lightning, Lindsay, and then Big Beats.
We're a really creative Osfitballer.
Just kids, you can do.
And I also had beatbox, but
they were from the cool kids.
And I didn't really fit it.
Can't confirm my cannot beatbox either.
So nothing really about it.
Really aligned with anything.
But I take it and
but Big Beats was way more common.
Begin Big Beats.
I like that.
I love beatbox too.
You both are good, right?
You both are.
If you just wanted that in general, we're out and about.
Go for it, mate.
I'll probably, I'll probably be like,
oh my god, someone's calling my name.
Straight away.
I'll reply to it.
I used to really want to be able to beatbox though.
And that was always the disappointment.
But, Darian, over to you,
you got some good names?
I really don't.
You know what?
When I was playing in Australia,
they would call me Dazza.
Okay.
And I love that.
And I was like, yeah, Lightning feet.
Yeah, I'm like, it really bad.
I was really fast.
So I loved that nickname,
but there was none like,
yeah, that are appropriate to say on a podcast.
Right.
That was also a lot.
It was a part of my engine, I think.
Same PG for the pod.
Yeah, keep it, keep it at PG,
even though Lori said ask earlier.
We're still sorry, everybody.
Okay, well, now that we've got Skyline,
Chilly rose the bell.
She makes her start in this game in her hometown.
Let's take a look at the lineup.
Because Emma Hayes comes out in a four four two once again.
So I was hyped.
I love being right twice.
I love that she's trying something new,
as we can always expect.
She has fell until it's Joyce,
holding it down in the back with Emily Fox,
Naomi Gurma and we saw it.
And Jacelle Thompson on the left.
And in front of her,
her sister, we got Thompson sisters on the left side.
Alyssa Thompson's damn coffee,
Claire Hutton and Rose Laveau,
with Trinity Robin and Ali Centenoart up top.
Now, Lori, I want to get your take on this
when you see the four four two with this US women's national team.
Because I think when people think of US soccer,
it's four three three down.
Never change.
We're going to be a four three three.
Do you like it?
Do you think it's good enough?
Is this actually a series formation
for this women's national team going forward?
Well, I would say knowing Emma Hayes
and working of having worked with her
when she was at Chelsea and came over to the US
and worked the Euros and within the commentating world,
that for Emma, one of the big talking points for her is,
okay, this is just starting positions.
So really, she's not wedded to systems
or the actual, like, how does it look on the paper?
And even when she was giving us information
for the broadcast, she was like, okay,
this is, you can put it down as a four four two,
but listen, there's going to be a lot of fluidity.
And I think we typically saw,
obviously in this game,
Rodin was drifting out to her preferred right side.
Laveau was drifting in.
That allows Fox to get forward, right?
So essentially, and then Elizabeth Thompson and Giselle Thompson
were aggressive in their play as well.
So I think a lot of times you could look at this
and it was a four three three in the run of play.
All of that, to be said,
I think these are just kind of starting positions
and it gives players and sometimes opposition,
something to think about, right?
Like, how are they going to line up?
But also, okay, what is the movement going to look like
where their strengths coming from?
What are the tendencies of these players?
But I think it also gives within the structure,
Emma's team to be able to just, yeah, okay,
these are, this is where you can move.
This is where we want to find the overloads.
This is where we want to stretch Canada.
I would imagine one of the things they knew
is that there wasn't a ton in the way of an attack
in the first game either for Canada.
We didn't see much in this game.
So they knew, even though it's a staple of ours to press
and they've clearly been working on that consistently
under MAs,
that was a goal, right?
And that was when our best opportunities came
was when we were pressed, we were aggressive.
But yeah, I think this is something
that we've seen regardless of these tendencies
and that we've been fox before, she likes to get forward.
She's going to attack out of that right back position.
And if Rodney pinches in or doesn't,
still allows her to get forward.
I think the only thing I would add to that is,
because I agree with what you were saying
and I totally resonates with Emma Hayes
in the way she works and starting positions
I kind of love that, I would love that as a player.
But when you're a four in midfield or two,
I should say with coffee and hot.
I think if it was difficult for them
always to be up against three from Canada's midfield.
I felt like in the first half, I was thinking,
right, Alissa Thompson's not quiet,
but just starting a little bit deeper,
but it's because either side had to over cover
in those wide areas because coffee and hot
and we're always three V2.
That's always the difficulty from playing 442.
If you're overloaded in the midfield,
you're always having to drag someone back
and it's who do you do,
send their coming central level a little bit more narrower.
Someone always had to be narrower
and that would for me took a little bit away
from Alissa Thompson going forward.
But how aggressive they were in the press
was absolutely phenomenal for me.
That was the one thing that stood out from the structure.
They just had great starting positions
like what you were saying, Laurie, to the end press,
was just aggressive every single time.
Yeah, I completely agree.
I think they were aggressive in their press,
but I wanted more from Canada
because there were still so many vulnerabilities
from the US and Canada had opportunities
early in each half as well,
but don't have the X factor putting them away
of being lethal.
I think Julie Fowdy said on the broadcast,
she's waiting for you're never worried
that someone's gonna kind of put the team
on their back and score.
Like you expected the US to recover
and make something happen.
And I will say US defense looked strong.
The second phase recovery when something broke down
whether it's Giselle Thompson, Emily Sauna was standing out.
Emily Fox made some really great important recoveries.
Like the amount of times that that shut down Canada's chances
was good.
And I actually love this back line.
What did we think of Giselle Thompson on the left side
between the two Thompson sisters over there?
Oh, Laurie, what's your facing?
You're all the people you know, I love it.
I think she could play a little bit.
Yeah, I love it.
I mean, when I saw this starting lineup,
I was pumped.
I was very excited to see also knowing that Canada,
I mean, it's kind of what we've been waiting for
in terms of since the Olympics, right?
You have a tournament where the games mean something.
Not that they haven't all last year,
but obviously loads of plays.
Yeah, exactly.
There's trophy, there's money on the line.
And Canada, everybody's gearing up to be
putting themselves in the best position
to qualify next year for the Women's World Cup.
So in Jeddah, I'm not thinking about beatboxing all the times.
I'm just going to get randomite, Will.
Exactly.
But I do feel like the only question I had about this starting lineup
was Claire Hutton and Sam Coffee in the midfield together
because they do have similar tendencies.
They're not the exact same player,
but they have the desire to both get on the ball
from the initial, from the back line.
They're the first ones to drop back.
And so I was curious if they were going to be kind of
occupying some of the same spaces.
And I felt like the first 15 minutes or so
when the game, when everything was kind of getting sorted out
before it felt like, OK, the US is really now
starting to establish much more control of this game.
There were times when those two were occupying
or at least initially trying to go pick up the ball
and start play.
But overall, I knew that there was going
to be someone on the line in Canada too.
Even though they didn't pose a threat,
and I think we all wish they had posed more of a threat,
I should say, they match us like in a physical aspect.
There's a lot of history.
And so I think that is always something
to keep in mind, especially when you think about, OK,
we rushed a lot of opportunities, right?
Because the pressure's coming quicker.
It's coming differently against Canada.
And those are all little things that you put in your back pocket
to continue to learn and grow as things
start to shake out even more in your Emma Hayes.
For me, that definitely felt like a factor.
I think that's really interesting though
that the pace of it.
I think that was definitely a narrative that you could see,
because it was a million miles an hour from minute one.
And that just didn't really ever tape or any point.
It was just like a brush kind of the entire time.
Oh, sorry, if I lose my voice at any point by the way,
someone please take over because my...
He'd been beatboxing all day?
Yeah, just like me.
Took my throat cold and everything.
But I think Julie Fowdy made a really interesting comment
as well.
She said the same thing.
She said it's a million miles an hour.
Someone needs to put their foot on it at some point.
But I do think that was a...
Because US and Canada do match themselves physically.
It's almost like who can do one better.
And it was at one point and I was like,
OK, someone just needs to have a little bit of composure
in the final third, because the transitions were phenomenal.
They were getting up the pitch so quick
when Lovelle was breaking through
or was Thompson on the left hand side.
But it was just that final pass that again wasn't quite
there or the pace was kind of the head of themselves.
But that was one thing that massively stood out to me
that the physicality of it.
Me too.
One of the notes I had from watching was,
I love watching games where a team is equal
in pace and physicality.
And it's not just, oh, it's going to be an ugly game.
They're going to hit hard.
And the dark arts are going to come out when you're playing.
No, it was pace for pace, step for step
with seven of the quickest players on the US and US national team.
Canada was able to keep up.
Same with the recoveries, the last ditch tackling,
the saves, even set pieces.
Both were had questionable moments at times.
When looking at this, what the women's national team
for US had, close to a dozen corner kicks,
are we surprised it more weren't put away?
Because I'm even surprised that Canada
weren't, wasn't better on those.
Like the Ellie set North, first of all,
let's talk about her goal.
You had two touches, got a toe poke on it,
puts it in the back and that.
But I'm also like, this seems unlike Canada
to give up set piece goals.
She had an identical one in the first half.
So yeah.
I think at any time, and Jen, you can speak to this too,
but I think sometimes when you zone,
you're zone and marking to an extreme like they were.
It takes the onus off the individual.
And I felt like, OK, there was one prime prior
where Sydney was able to take a great first touch
right in the middle of the box and wasn't able to put it away.
And then also on the goal, right?
And now that one was a lower free kick.
But I'm thinking in those instances, if you're Canada,
I feel like they will look back on this game and say, OK,
we need to clean things up in defensive set pieces
and defensive corner kicks because,
sorry, somebody's going to put their foot through that.
There's no way it should be getting through that amount
of traffic to sit and work again.
And she's able to take a touch and then shoot and score.
I would say, though, and Julie Fattie did say this, too,
or they talked about it on the broadcast about,
that's been a point of emphasis for MA or coaching staff,
because we have been known as a US women's national team
to be just dominant on set pieces.
And I felt like that was a little bit of a still underwhelming
with the service consistently.
I mean, we had the low free kick from the foreman for the goal.
But then there's some few high arching ones
that I feel like those are always difficult
when they're in the air, hanging in the air
for so long.
So I feel like that's going to have to continue
to be an evolving factor, because it's still a assault tonight.
That's going to, those are some of our best chances, right?
We created them from the press, and then
we're able to get opportunities.
But we created those set pieces because of the press
and putting Canada under pressure.
So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that evolves.
I think someone, I'd look at the team,
and even when we go back to the lineup,
I kind of thought, OK, who's the target on set pieces
when that happens?
If Iran's out, the fair, that's fair.
Do you have on it, right?
Yeah, I still would say name Igurma as well.
But yeah, in Claire Hutton, in that particular group.
I guess I just look at this, and I'm like,
who's the lethal player on set pieces for the US
when Lindsey Hurran isn't there?
Yeah, I mean, but that's when I guess you get creative with it.
And like there was a, you know, you see them,
we used to call it the train going towards the front post
altogether, kind of trying to find space
where it was possible or lower deliveries.
We saw that that's kind of what led to the goal.
You're not aiming for an out and out header.
When you don't have that on the pitch,
you kind of do have to be a little bit more creative,
which I thought, when you have that many,
I'm a men some finally going against you.
But no, I do think Canada is one thing
they will be looking at 100%.
You cannot give away that many set pieces
against a team like the US,
and not expect to continue at some point,
regardless of he's on the pitch.
Yeah.
Yeah, listen, we lost the 2011 World Cup
because Japan was amazing on set pieces.
And it started with the delivery.
They, we dominated, we should have won in the first half,
and then they came back in Sawa,
Umar Sawa, just like delivery near post run,
it was like so clinical.
So, and we dominated in terms of height against them.
So, I'll bring it up legend.
Barf over here in the corner, thinking about that game.
Bringing up legends in the games.
I know, yeah, she was.
She was, she was.
Legend, yeah.
But I'm looking at this game and thinking,
how good of a test with this was this
for the US women's national team?
I think this was top tiered.
This is exactly what was needed.
A match in physicality, a match in transitions,
and threats that they composed,
maybe not as nearly as threatening as they should be
in the final third, but I think they poked enough holes
in what should be one of our best lineups
for the US women's national team.
So, when we're looking ahead,
Laurie, what do you think the biggest takeaways are
for the US that they're going to want to pull in
for the next game against Columbia?
What were some of the biggest lessons
that they got from this match?
I think it's probably what we would all say
was just a little bit more patience, right?
Or diversity in the speed of play.
And again, one of the biggest strengths of always
with this team, but also even under Emma Hayes
as you can tell the commitment to just suffocate teams,
everybody stepping in and you get Emily Sonnet
stepping up, dispossessing.
I mean, that was one of the reasons why I felt like
Canada didn't have a ton,
especially I would say after the 20th minute mark
of the game.
But then if it's not on to go quickly
or you feel like, okay, hey, we've rushed to me passes
and we're trying to play a final pass.
Like I felt like there was times
we tried to play the through pass instead of,
hey, just peel your run a little bit wider,
play to feet and then I want to take on one V1
and create combination then or just go one V1, right?
And said so much was like a through ball
that was easily read from Canada.
So I think those moments where it's just like,
hey, what is the game needed this?
We've pressed, we've forced the issue a bit too much now.
This next, this next play, you know,
let's see if we can swing it around
and really force Canada to have to work
in this moment to defend us side to side.
But the last thing I'll say about that is I do feel like
it does show that there's, you know,
a group that's in preseason and there's a group
that's currently very much that showed a little bit
of, you know, where everybody is or yeah,
in terms of where they're played in.
Jen, what about for you?
Were you kind of feel the same?
Yeah, I think what's, you know,
the beauty of the Sheeblies Cup,
you're going to get so many of these different games.
This was clearly the very one that highlight the one
that highlighted physicality.
One prior Argentina was about possessing the ball
and I feel like we saw again another different side,
the almost lack of urgency,
which was so rare to see from the US team
kind of a lot more passes backwards
being conscious of a very patient game that they had to play.
This felt like the complete opposite
and I completely, just the backup Laurie's point,
I think it's now, it's combining all of that,
when to step up the gears, when to slow it down,
when to possess the ball, when to release someone,
knowing our counterattacks on.
And then, I mean, it was one of my favorite things
to practice, there's waves of attack
when you just have half a pitch to go into
and you have to pick the right pass
or the balls or you've lost it.
So no, it's combining that match awareness.
But online, this was the strongest living we've seen
in such a long time and we're getting closer
to that sort of competitive fast paced edge
that we're used to seeing.
So for me, it's 100% combining those, I guess,
the tactical awareness of what a game needs at what point.
Yeah, biggest takeaway for me was just decision making.
I think it was a night and day quicker than the game
against Argentina.
I think that was the biggest issue.
But it's interesting that Melissa said at halftime,
Emma Hayes' biggest takeaway was,
you know, we're playing some passes around the backline
like it's a preseason pass or like it's too slow.
And you know, the Valentine's Choice had one
that I was like, my god, a quicker team is gonna pounce on that.
And I think those are just the little things
that you don't ever, it should feel like second nature
almost building out those quick passes,
how you're breaking teams down, switching the point of the attack
that I think are gonna come.
But we're talking this really early on.
This team has a lot of time to roll out.
This is the first time we've seen this team play
against heavy competition that really, really,
truly tested them.
And we can't wait for more of it
because it's gonna happen this Saturday.
Well, everybody stick with us
because we are gonna talk about some individual performances
that stood out.
So please let us know while we're in this quick break
and we'll talk to you on the other side.
Monster Energy.
Everybody knows white monster, zero ultra.
That's the OG.
It kicked off this whole zero sugar energy drink thing.
But ultra is a whole lineup now.
You've got strawberry dreams, blue Hawaiian, sunrise,
in vice guava.
And they all bring the monster energy punch.
So if you've been living in the white can, branch out.
Ultra's got a flavor for every vibe.
And every single one is zero sugar.

Welcome back to attacking third.
All right, let's jump into individual performances
that stood out.
Number one for me, the goal score, the young book.
Allie, this is the North.
I just thought there's so many questions coming in as to,
who's going to fill in the number nine spot?
Is there competition there?
Does the team totally have to change the way they play?
Because we don't have the utmost depth.
To me, Allie sent nor approved it.
Not just because she got the goal tonight,
but her hold up play, her runs in behind.
She's dynamic, she turns on a dime.
She can also thread a ball through a backline
and find feet with pace.
To me, she's total package.
But maybe the last piece I want to see
is how well she can do in the air.
Against competition, can she be threatening off of set pieces
and be more of a target in that way?
And she ended up getting a goal.
I think more so due to Canada's board defending.
But to me, she solidified her spot
that she's in competition for that number nine.
She doesn't have to play in a 10.
She's a nine.
She definitely should have had a brace.
Yeah.
She should have got the first, got the part
of her press the first and foremost.
We talked about the press so much.
And she cut, she won it off.
She won it off the set, but one of the set back
and then was won on the goalkeeper.
And you know those ones that you almost have too much time.
And then you go and score that even harder,
one up the other end later on,
because you're probably so annoyed that you've just missed it.
But no, talk about a player stepping up
for a role that, you know, in a pressure moment.
I think she was leading the line of a press
that was really intensely entire time.
So to get this sort of defining goal in a moment,
I think you're spot on.
I think she was for sure to stand it.
Mm-hmm.
You know, you and I have, we talked,
I think it was in the January games,
where she just has this desire
to get on the end of everything.
Yes.
And so a lot of that movement
and that desire opens up space for others.
And that's why I say I feel like as in the nine position,
even if she's making little runs,
she's dragging players with her
and then that's gonna allow for Rose
or whoever's coming in underneath.
She sees it.
Yeah.
Exactly.
So just feel that I am with Jen, though.
I mean, you do at this point in time now,
I mean, this is what we're talking about.
With so much competition,
how the game has evolved on the women's side so much,
you're held now because of the level of play
that she is at consistently in the club and country.
She's gonna be accepted and she knows this,
put those chances away, right?
Because it's like it's gonna be so much more pressure
on that player to say, nope, you gotta put those away,
when it matters most.
And these are the games that you look back on
and it's like, did you finish the simple chances?
Did you create chaos?
Were you hungry enough from front of goal?
And I think she proven,
I think especially for a young player
in a moment of all of that pressure
with thinking ahead to next year,
she was able to overcome maybe the mistake
that she should have scored earlier on in the game
and still put one away.
So that's off to Alyssa.
Yeah, she keeps my stand out.
We'll be curious, too, to see if that's where she plays
with Corbythune coming into Kansas City.
Do they play next to each other
or do they play more up top as the nine
and then those two are playing off of one another.
That's a good one.
I know you loved them.
So I'll let you try a bit of so on it, Laurie,
but another, I'll jump in.
But coffee for me was a standout as well.
I think talk about someone.
When you have a player like sent or ahead of you
and you have to match that energy,
who can you always guarantee is going to do that?
And Sam Koffier of me did it from the get-go.
I feel like she's, she looked like someone
who's also fighting for a club position
who's not necessarily getting the minutes that she deserves
from a player standpoint.
So she was, is always full of energy,
but looked like she had another gear in her yet again.
And not just that, her dropping to the backline,
combining through the midfield,
she had some really nice passes to release
in the final third.
And yeah, for me, it was just a big standout
in a midfield that was overloaded as well at some point.
And what do you need?
Someone who reads the game very, very well.
What space is to cover?
When to jump and when to sit in that six row?
So that sort of matched intelligence
to kind of over the course of the entire game.
I thought it was spot on.
Also, I love seeing her make a run up top
and send some crosses in.
Yeah.
Yeah, she is.
Do you know some set in honor?
Lightning, some might say.
It's so light on.
It was great.
Lightning Lindsay.
Because we know our foot race.
Give me on that team.
Yeah, as you mentioned, beatbox and Jen.
Emily Sonner, I just enjoyed how she played.
I mean, obviously, if we're going to press,
the backline has to step up too.
It was clear that was going to be the center back
that they were going to release.
And then the other three, depending on who was back,
would just squeeze in and essentially be a three back
to give a little bit of cover in behind.
And I thought the timing of Emily Sonner's press
stank connected to the midfield when they would go really
limited Canada to any sort of, unless they
were able to break out a different way.
But in those moments, I thought
she did an incredibly good job.
And I just think in general, because we went to UVA.
I'm older than her.
But I've known Emily Sonner for so many years
in just to see the evolution and consistently get more mature
and consistent as a player and step up.
And then, obviously, give her a shout out for this being.
She's the only player I play in every she believes, which
is just bananas to make crazy.
But yeah, I think we just continue to see her mature.
And help lead this team, right?
Before she would be putting in wild tackles
that you'd like, oh, God, she's a big red ball.
And she's still doing that, but with the more mature,
like a summer restraint.
Yeah.
And I think it's exceptional.
It's just fun to see that evolution.
I love when you highlight the timing of that,
because stepping into midfield, I mean, I was a center back
because that was always the hardest thing
if you're on a team that's pressing really high at the pitch.
If you're late, that striker is turning and going the other way.
Or if you go all the way in too early
and it's played over the top, the gap's massive behind you.
But she just crushed it every single time
that was one of my spots as well.
I was like, she's in there.
And even if she's not winning it, she's forcing
to play all the way backwards, almost to Canada
having to force it back to their center back.
So for me, that was a huge standout as well.
And I love how you said the timing.
I actually think if Sonnet were not in the game,
that would have been a far worse game for the US.
Just energy-wise, because it was not the cleanest,
I think a lot of players that we expect to have better games
didn't stand out that much.
And to me, the energy that she brings,
when you see a teammate with veins pulsing, screaming at the referee,
just like the most kind of theatrical movements on the pitch,
that makes you want to overcome anything that's going on.
Maybe it's a lackluster performance.
And to me, she's just one of those players
that even I've only played against Sonnet
for in college and professionally.
And she makes the opponent feel that energy, too.
And I think it's a very contagious one.
That's your teammate, as well.
I do feel like this should be on a social media clips
if you look, but after the goal,
the way that they shot the replay,
she's doing like the double movements.
And like, you always use a scene of it every time.
And just like, it feels even more dramatic with Sonnet.
So I'm just like, for you.
I call me.
I had a little gig old to myself.
I didn't go to kept going in slow motion, too.
I was still here for it.
You would have thought she scored,
which that's what you wanted in a teammate.
Our chat is shouting out,
Dizel Thompson, like crazy.
So we have to give her some flowers,
because left back with the national team,
paired up with her sister in front of her,
to be that's one of the best performances
I've seen from Dizel Thompson on the national team.
Yeah, I can't agree more.
I'm watching two sisters collaborate
for a national team.
I just also want to highlight how phenomenal that is.
And not just any national team, the US national team.
It's just incredible.
But it was like, they just balance each other out so well.
I think that's when Alissa was going on the inside,
you just all of you,
all you could see was Dizel going on the outside,
just in that space, creating that for Alissa.
And then every single defensive run was just on the mark
every single time.
So both attributes offensively and defensively,
I thought she was absolutely phenomenal as well today.
Yeah, I love what shout out to a funky old man,
who said not sure what would vote.
Dizel Thompson, player of the month,
but I wrote her as the player that elevated her standing
to be considered for the World Cup.
She played really far ahead of her norm.
I completely agree.
I think she scored major points,
looking ahead, especially being versatile,
not just on the right, but on the left.
And getting played with her sister is just like,
that can give you more nerves
or you can just enjoy the moment.
Like what only two other sisters that's happened to
on the US national team?
Incredible.
Amazing.
I do want to give some team Canada love
to my former teammate, Vanessa Giel,
because I just thought she was standout defensively.
Like US could have had three, four goals
without her and her last ditch tackling.
And Jenna, I kind of want to hear from you like,
what goes into that?
Because to me, she's one of the best last ditch
tacklers in the world.
Like the amount of time she does that for Bayern,
for Canada, no matter what team she's on,
she's just a wall to get through.
Yeah, I mean, don't know why you're asking me,
you have no idea, but I'm never that great at it.
No, I think it has to be a classic.
Defenders have to love defending.
And I know that sounds ridiculous,
but there are some games where you just have to sacrifice,
especially if you're coming up against a team
that is pressing the absolute life at you,
that you just know you're in for 90 minutes
and every tackle matters.
Every time you play at the back,
you're not really sure if it's going to be successful
because the team is pressing so well.
But you just have to stay in it.
And I think that's what she did so well.
And does it weaken, weak out,
but knowing you have to go to ground
is never something a center back wants to do either.
But if that's what your team needs
and those last tackles that are stopping a striker
getting extra yard on you or stopping a shot on target
or gaining that little bit deflection,
it might be a set piece considered,
but you stopped the goal going in.
And for 90 minutes, she was just absolutely relentless
doing that for Canada.
So I love the shout out.
And I think the group chat definitely needed it
because she's a stalwart defender,
not just a club, but for her country as well.
So yeah, I'm glad we've highlighted her actually.
And then even on the ball,
to be defending for a lot of the game,
just the other confidence to step up.
And because I thought they were actually really good
playing out in combinations at some point.
But at the end of the day,
you just have to give credit to the press,
which we have done this entire chat.
But no, she was, she was another really, really great performer
for Canada.
Mm-hmm.
Well, and provided such a good test.
And we're going to see another test for the US
this Saturday against Columbia.
So let's take a look ahead at what that competition
could bring, stick with us after.
Start your day with Quaker protein insinote meal.
The insinote meal, ready to help you tackle
whatever your day brings,
like wrinkling your toddler into their car seat.
That was fun.
Coaching your six-graders soccer team.
Double girls!
And carrying all the groceries in one trip.
Try Quaker protein, insinote meal, granola, and bars.
Great taste and a good source of protein.
Quaker, bring out the good.
Just quick break.
Welcome back to attacking third friends.
Last seg, best seg.
Let's take a look ahead.
Because today Argentina lost to Columbia
after a goal from Linda Kaisato in the 64th minute.
And the US and the national team
are going to be taking on Columbia this Saturday.
And of course, attacking third will be recapping it
right after the game.
But there's a lot of history here
between this matchup of USAverse Columbia.
And if we can take a little walk down memory lane,
you remember the match where Alex Morgan and Trinity
Rodman in the W. Gold Cup kind of got into it.
This is where we saw spicy Trinity.
Alex Morgan stepping up.
It's just a game of feistyness.
And then also, there's another match
where Abby Womback gets a black eye
thanks to Andrade.
Lori, you're giggling.
Do you remember this game?
Yeah, I do remember this.
And also, this is why I love this, she believes
because it is, there's three completely different opponents.
So it's fun to have.
And I would imagine, and we were even
talking about this prior, that Columbia,
even know they have said that these
haven't been the best two best games that they played.
Imagine they're going to be ready and put out
whatever they, their best game on Saturday
versus the US.
I don't know, I mean, listen, who knows?
I don't know if I expect to have the same
wildness that we've had in some of the previous games,
but it's going to be fun.
It's going to, obviously, a trophy, as we mentioned,
is on the line.
So in Columbia, regardless of how they're playing,
maybe as a unit, the individual players
that they have are exceptional.
So you always have to be aware of those players,
like the Santos that we're all familiar with, Linda Casado.
I mean, keep naming them.
And there's such quality.
So yeah, I'm going to be really curious to see what this game looks
like on Saturday.
And I feel like I have a filmo big time.
I feel like I've really just got potential to be exactly
what we're talking about, though, because the games have been
this word I keep here in Chippy.
Yes, the game has been so far.
I've been, you know, we've seen some things that
pulling here and all sorts than previously.
So hopefully it doesn't get to that in that route.
But I don't know.
Hopefully we don't see black eyes again, Laurie.
I don't know what happened in that game.
But from what I've seen sort of, the games have been
really physical and very much down that right in different ways.
So I'm, I'm expecting the same.
And Columbia have all the quality that exactly what you just said,
might be a little less structured defensively,
which is where you ask him can really open, open them out.
But yeah, if they can just be disciplined,
but then that structure for across an entire game,
they've why not?
I think it's there in first shot.
I'm here for some of the trash talking.
We even got Lily Johan as the young and getting into it
in the Argentina match.
And she's one of those players I'm looking,
I'm hoping that we see get more minutes in this game against Columbia.
And when you guys look at, you know, the first two matches,
she, Emma Hayes, went very, very young in the first game.
And then this game, I think we can all agree.
We saw more of a, this is the team she's most confident in putting out.
This probably the strongest team line for line that we've seen so far.
Do you think we'll see a combination on Saturday
or maybe we'll see something very similar
to what we got today, Lori?
Yeah, that's a, you know, I was thinking about that during the match tonight,
how that she would rotate.
But I do think it will be a combination.
I think she might mix the two teams just to see, to continue.
And I think it's going to be based on,
potentially, obviously, it'll be a week then or less,
depending on who's playing that Friday night for into BSL.
So I think it's one, how players are feeling,
what kind of minutes do you have under your belt
and quick succession of these games that plus traveled knowing that?
Okay, this is still tail end of preseason for a lot of these players.
So I do think we're going to see more of a mix of the group though,
which, I mean, right now, that is the thing that is wildly exciting.
I think we all know that is, it's like, okay,
what is going to be the best mix of players?
And it's not always the best individual 11,
as we all know as well.
So it's actually, what's the group that's going to work really well together
and bring out the best in one another?
Yeah, I very much imagine Lindsey Heaps will be back in
and they'll just be some rotation of some different players.
But similar, similar names on the team sheet as well that was held tonight.
Yeah, I think a blend as well.
I would see Shaw back in there from a hold the ball up standpoint.
I want the nine.
Potentially, yeah, just from a standpoint of
Columbia will sit a little bit lower.
You need someone with a bit more physical similar as Heaps
from a technical standpoint when the spaces are much tighter,
who can hold the ball up in those kind of situations.
I thought a goal against Argentina was absolutely brilliant.
One, two, touching it, it's back of the net.
Same as Heaps.
So from that standpoint, I think a bit more of a blend,
but we're definitely starting to see the strongest 11 of the US,
which is probably the most exciting point.
Yeah, well, after all this time,
we're seeing finally what Heaps is really trying to do.
But when I think about Columbia and the tests that they can provide
the US to me, it's they're going to come in by Steve.
They're going to be very physical.
I think in a different way than Canada was,
because I don't think they match necessarily the athleticism
that the US has, but technically,
tactically, they do, and they have such talented,
especially attackers that can hurt the US.
If they're on, they're on.
And I don't think that the US in this tournament so far
has faced a frontline that's as threatening as Columbia.
So I'm actually really looking forward to seeing
I hope a very similar backline to what we saw today
get tested against good competition
that can actually punish in moments
where there are vulnerabilities and there are mistakes.
But I'm like, it's Valentine's choice going to start this match?
Or do we switch back to Claudia Dickey?
That's kind of a question that I'm thinking who deserves this game
after both were just kind of tested
in the first two matches of this she believes cup?
Jen, who do you think?
That one I have no idea.
That one, I think, is so you can see it.
Tell his choice has been working on our feet so much
and trying to aid the backline with building out more
from the back and decision making of when to go long
and take the pressure off our backline.
I think it was really apparent tonight,
especially when Canada were coming after it.
So I think US are actually blessed with goalkeepers
and it's hard to define between them.
And when it's neither have been overly tested
in the past two games,
but I can't see a reason to not have
tell his choice back in the net.
But predicting Emma Hayes starting living
has become one of the hardest things to do.
Like a game now.
Yeah.
But I, yeah, I would, for argument sake,
I would keep tell his choice back in for consistency.
Yeah, I think it is.
That's been the toughest one.
And again, it's been an ongoing conversation
that Emma Hayes has been very transparent about
is that waiting for somebody to grab that position
and she's been talked about how good Fallon,
Fallon to his choice has been.
They referenced it tonight about consistently improving
with the ball at her feet and in possession.
But I mean, rarely is she giving up shots or goals,
excuse me.
And that's the most important thing.
I think when you think of a goalkeeper
as you're not picking the ball out of the back of the net.
But yeah, I don't, it's been, it feels now
she's still like rotating and just giving these goalkeepers
and there could be more to it.
But it does feel like she's just,
she's giving them experience, right?
Even if they aren't being tested at the time.
And it's not quite as clear on how they're making
those decisions for each game.
So to me, it just feels like a little bit of like a toss up
in terms of, okay, who are they going with?
And what are they seeing in training
that is standing out to them or sometimes in these,
in the games like Fallon to be playing right now with Manu?
Yeah, this is true.
Oh, well, never know, we'll see.
But I'm also saying that Fallon's choice
because why change it?
Let her get more of a chance for you to show up
to make some saves and we get to see her take over the goal.
Okay, last but not least,
my least favorite part of this, actually, score predictions.
I can kick us off.
I'm going to say USM's national team
is going to beat Columbia three to one.
What was his name as me?
Oh, really?
Come on.
Come on.
I promise you had the exact same score in my head.
Three to one.
Three to one.
Well, I was going to zero the US.
So clean sheet, we love it.
We love it.
Yeah, I'm going for a clean sheet.
I think that would be huge.
And then against Columbia in this game, yeah.
All right.
For important winners all around basically.
Yeah, US sweep, I'm here for it.
I just want to see them.
The reason I have put them conceding
is that I want other teams to be so proficient in their attack
that it tests the US, that there are things to fix,
that there are problems that they can build on.
Because we don't actually really get to see it
because teams aren't taking advantage of the mistakes
that are there.
Like, look, I should have put that goal away.
Yes.
That should have been interesting just
to see that reaction and what do you do when things break down?
Yeah, that's the next iteration we need to see.
Well, we'll be talking about it right after the game.
On Saturday at Sports Illustrated Stadium, don't forget,
we will be recapping it as soon as the final whistle blows,
just like we did tonight.
Everybody, we appreciate you listening
or watching here on YouTube or watching on Galazza Network.
Thank you all so much.
