Annette's Story: Early Detection Saves Life

On March 31st, a 39-year-old mom from Manchester named Annette Illing signed up for a breast cancer

wrist trial without a second thought. No family history, just figured why not check it out.

Turns out, in June 2025, that mammogram caught her early-stage breast cancer,

giving her a real shot at beating it. The trial, called BCAN-Ray, targets women aged 30 to 39

at the Christie Cancer Center. It kicked off in May 2023, funded by over 1 million pounds,

raised through the Sarah Harding breast cancer appeal backed by cancer. Research UK. Sarah Harding,

the girl's allowed singer, who passed that 39 in 2021, pushed for earlier detection right up to

the end. Annette, mom to daughter's age 13, 11, and 8, credits Sarah's legacy with saving her life.

She even met Sarah's bandmate, Kimberly Walsh there, and emotions hit hard. Annette went through

two surgeries, radiotherapy, and now five years of hormone therapy, plus annual scans.

She's cancer-free and grateful, saying she'd rather know early and have options.

This shows how spotting risks decades before standard screening can change everything,

especially for women flying under the radar with no history. Sarah's wish lives on, cutting short

those tough stories.
