AP Washington correspondent Sagar Magani reports employers added a surprising 162,000 jobs in August. The report may boost chances the federal reserve will raise its key interest rate this month, since solid hiring signals current rates aren't not necessarily high enough to cool inflation. Fed share Kevin Wars said last week he wants more progress in lowering inflation. Otherwise, we have worked to do. Fed governor Christopher Waller says he's leaning toward keeping the rate unchanged, but would back a hike if next Friday's inflation reading remains high. Here at the White House, Vice President Van says President Trump's preference is clear. The Fed should be lowering interest rates.
