I'm Marcelo Sanchez with an AP News Minute. At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, President Trump made this promise if the GOP holds both the House and Senate majorities come November. I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000. It's a dubious gambit with Republican fortune sagging. It will be called the Trump dividend. It is both financially and politically implausible, and would cost the nation a lot, likely more than a trillion dollars. It reflects the president's apparent calculation that he needs something bold to boost GOP chances. He lamented during last night's Republican convention that in modern times, a president's party usually loses midterm seats. We've got to change that. And I'm Marcelo Sanchez.
