AZ Wildcats Podcast — Arizona Can UPSET BYU In ENORMOUS Week 2 Matchup. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Happy victory Tuesday, Wildcat fans. Today we're doing our takeaways from NAU and a big BYU preview as well as some power rankings because Big 12 football is officially back. It's the AZ Wildcat podcast and it starts right now. Welcome, welcome, welcome on into the AZ Wildcat podcast coming to you. Vlog from Studio K presented by our friends over at Circle K. It is I your host, Damon Farrell, AKA Damon Dogg with my guy Kevin Thomas, AKA the 2026, also now with content creator of the year, AKA Kevaux Posts right here at pH next HQ, three in downtown Phoenix, AZ and Kevin Thomas. It is a victory Tuesday. As you said off the top and the cold open Arizona gets the W over NAU starts off the season in the wind column as we all predicted suspected and hoped would happen.
But now you have what is potentially the biggest matchup of the entire season already in week two as you take in a top 15 opponent at their house. We're going to be talking about Arizona versus BYU all week long. But first off, you know, appreciate everybody for being here already. Please drop a like on this video and let's let's hit this week with intensity. You know what I mean? I was watching a Joe Salvea video this morning, Kevin and yeah, and he was just talking about how it's all about the details. Every don't get bored about what you do love what you do. It's all about the details. And so that's what this podcast is all about this week. The details, the details, the details. You know, Damon speaking of details week zero. We did not play week one. You play NAU week two. You play BYU week three. You play N. I you. I mean, if you got a three letter acronym in your school name, we want the smoke with you NAU BYU and I it does not matter.
But yeah, no, it feels good on a victory Tuesday. WSW S. Yeah. WVU we we we can skip Cincinnati. We can just act like that doesn't happen. But yeah, I mean, we want the smoke with all these schools, Damon, but it's I'm very, very excited for this BYU matchup. We talked about it this past weekend and obviously we're excited for balls back. Obviously the team cannot overlook NAU. But as a fan, I would be remiss to not look ahead to that BYU matchup and be salivating looking at that two logos thinking about Arizona potentially upsetting BYU in provo. Yeah, it would be one of because Western Michigan's got scraped off the board. One of the biggest wins of the college football season in the young iteration of it. Obviously, the story is yet to be written. But you understand like this game is absolutely massive. If Arizona does pull off this upset, it really kind of upsets the apple cart in a in a great way for the for the Arizona Wildcats of the big 12 conference. It would kind of prove that Arizona is this is who they say they are. Right.
The has this quarterback that could be a Heisman hopeful that has this defensive coordinator that doesn't give a damn who is on his defense. They're going to play at a high level offensive coordinator. One of the most young up and coming offensive coordinators on the West Coast right now is Seth Deggy. And if Arizona is able to go into BYU and get this done, it would prove that all of that is exactly what they say it is. Right. And I think that that is they have a huge opportunity on their on their hands, their fingertips here, Damon. And last year was a very, very, very, very close loss. This year, can you maybe as Brent Brennan's preaching as well and his presser take care of some of the details. Do the extra in preparation this week that that's what the staff is is prepping and preaching. But yeah, very excited. It's a massive game cannot wait for it this Saturday, 12 30 7 and a half point spread right now in favor of the hosts in BYU. Plus 235 on the money line. I mean, obviously we knew Arizona was going to be underdogs. You're playing to top 15 team at their house. But I do think that that's a win a win a very winable game. That's I think you're being shown some respect there by the books given.
You know, you're probably adding about three, four points based off of whose home versus whose away. So they don't have Arizona as much of an underdog to BYU on a neutral field type of situation. I don't know. I mean, I think that that's respect to Arizona so far. I'm looking at our friends at draft Kings Kevin 96% of the bets placed on BYU. I mean, does that that does not surprise me at this point at this point in time on Tuesday. I don't think that surprises me. I think a lot of this a lot of Arizona fans are going to get their bets in on like Friday on Saturday and such. But I do think a lot of people are going to look at this match up and just instantly say, oh BYU is going to win Arizona might play decent in this one, but BYU is going to win. I think history tells you Arizona usually gets blown out of in this type of game early in a season when it's this pivotal of a match up and it really can set you up for success all year long. Like there's not a lot of times where I feel like Arizona just goes out there and gets the job done. I'm thinking about, you know, when Scooby right stripped the ball away from Marcus Marioda back in 2014.
I mean, that was early in the season and that was a really pivotal game that kind of sets you up for a lot of success. But outside of that, I can't really think of a like a time where Arizona had a ton of hype going into a really, really big time match up and especially if you start throwing in like road factor as well. When having to play a game on the road like we beat Oklahoma State, you know, way years years and years back under Mike Stoops. That was an early season W. But then when you played your road game against Oklahoma State, you got smoked in the home and home that you set up with them. So like every time you play it kind of a top tier competition team, especially on the road early in the year feels like Arizona is not really up for those type of environments and those type of games. So it'll be interesting to see if you can kind of rewrite history a little bit right here. I think it'd be one of the biggest early season wins in Arizona football history. No question about it. And you would automatically kind of put yourself. I think that certainly your number one in the big 12 in terms of other teams playing ketchup for against Arizona. But I do think that like that old you'll see that reflected in odds as well on sportsbooks when you look at like big 12 futures. If Arizona wins.
This game they're going to be first second third in big 12 futures to win the big 12 championship because they're going to have an automatic leg up. That's how pivotal of a game. This is right away right off the bat. Yeah, 100% like this is why it feels like. And I was when I was on the drive in today. I was thinking to myself like man. This game kind of feels like the whole season in so many ways, which is ridiculous to say in week two Arizona could lose this game and finish the season with one loss. I'm thinking man, what what what we have what can we have done to get that 12th win. But also like the season is not actually over if they do lose this game. However, the stakes feel so high. Right. That if you do win. It feels like you're setting yourself on a track that if you handle what you is in front of you, you can be the big 12 title game. And it feels like if you lose this game, then you do have to kind of prove that you're actually of the level of a team that can make that kind of a run. Right. It would kind of feel like, okay, well, we have our real title contenders. And then we have Arizona maybe right there at the top of that if you lose this game, which is not the worst place to be like I said, you could finish out with all wins. And it's all the sun, your 11 and one in this conversation is irrelevant.
But it does feel like a massive momentum building opportunity, not only for this year's team. But also for the program as a whole, right. I think you want to prove that like I remember last year, distinctly, I forget which game it was. I believe it was Cincinnati on the road last year. Where you and I were doing our predictions and I was predicting an Arizona win and you wanted to predict an Arizona win. But you were like, they got approved to me that they can go win a big road game. Yeah, I haven't seen it. This is not a game that Brent Brennan's team is usually win. Right. And I think that this is an opportunity for this staff to kind of start to show that. Hey, we might not have no for feet of past this year, but we're building a culture here that is a hard working detail oriented process focused culture and it got us this result. Right. And I think it's obviously the team should be focused on just this objective. But I do think it's a much bigger opportunity than just. Oh, you can go to Provo and oh, give it your gosh darn best guys. No, like this is an opportunity to set your team on a track for a big 12 title.
This is an opportunity to prove that the program under Brent Brennan is not only moving in the right direction, but is where it needs to be in this current state. It's a big opportunity for Arizona. And I think it's it's honestly hard to understate or overstate. It's hard to overstate how important. Yeah, because it's easy to understate hard to overstate how important this game is for Arizona. Because it does feel like the season goes one way if we win one way if we lose, which obviously not the reality, but it certainly feels that way. I do think it would definitely be a little bit debilitating towards the ultimate goal of making and winning a big 12 championship going to the college football playoff. You're almost shooting yourself in the foot. If you lose this game in week two, and I don't want to make it out to be that it's this. I'm impactful on the entire Brent Brennan coaching tenure because I do think that, you know, obviously there's a world where you lose this game and he can still have a very sustainable coaching tenure at Arizona that being said though, I do think that it is like a trajectory kind of defining game as well.
Like again, I don't think that there's as much downside to potentially losing this game for Brent Brennan overall as like it would be for this 2026 season in a vacuum. Yeah. But at the same time, if you win, I think the upside of that is extremely high. If you're Brent Brennan, you win that game. I mean, don't you just feel kind of like the man in the recruiting cycle when you're hosting visits guys are coming to come watch your team play. You know that that would actually get people in Tucson hyped up a little bit. If you beat BYU, I think that's going to be the true kind of marketer of this program this season is can you win this football game? It will more than likely impact your ticket sales the entire rest of the way after a disappointing week one when it comes to the amount of money that you know you made in tickets that you sold just over 40,000 reported. But that not to cut you off. Yeah, but like that is why I do feel like it is slightly bigger than just like I know that like you said I do not disagree with this point that Brent Brennan colludes this game and be fine.
Yeah, in terms of Arizona history and his place in it and where his career goes after this and all that doesn't actually like put his career on that kind of course. The upside is just so high if you were able to win this game. Yes. And the downside as you already touched on is kind of the fan belief that like, okay, well, we've built up to this point. Can we get over this hurdle? And if we don't get over this hurdle, I think it we know it takes Arizona fans a while to kind of get back to the point where you feel confident. Hey, we're going to go to beat this BYU team, right? Like a couple weeks from now when you play Texas tech. If you lose this game, I feel like fans are not going to be as confident in you obviously. And I think that that is kind of where it is bigger than just this season, right? Like do the fans believe that Brent Brennan's team can go win this game going forward in a different context that maybe isn't BYU on the road. Maybe it's Texas tech on the road. Maybe it's I don't know a different tough Utah on the road, right in a big scenario, for example, right? Like I think it is bigger than that in the sense that it kind of affects fan morale and affects fan belief in a program that specifically has to kind of keep fans attentive has to kind of keep fans locked in and full belief or else we will see lower attendance and all these things that we don't really want to talk about, but it's true.
And I think that this game if we talked about it on Saturday, if you win this game, no doubt in my mind, and I you is packed, right? Because people are like, man, you just crushed BYU on the road. No, if you look great, everybody looked good. Excited for the rest of the season. And you're in the AP poll at that point as opposed to like cautious about the rest of the season. It's crazy how much that number next year, your team name can really impact how much your fans care about the program. I mean, Arizona is what effectively 29th in the ranking or something like that. When you look at the other teams receiving votes, puts you inside the top 30. You're one of the five first teams out of the top 25. And yet it does feel like if Arizona was 24th, all of a sudden the hype would just be that much higher in Tucson. So yeah, I mean, it's disappointing the lack of support to start this season. And that's I do, I do think that that is probably the biggest downside of losing this game is that you, you don't have opportunities to win a section of your fan base back like this very often.
And right now, I think with kind of the perfect storm of senior, you're know of a FIDA, the team's pretty good. You had a good season last year. You're playing against the top 15 team this next week. And you're going to be on national television doing so. It's one of the marquee games in all of college football. A lot of people are going to be paying attention, especially at 12 30 PM, right where you're not just tucked away in the middle of the night where people are trying to go to bed. Like this is going to be a game that people have on their televisions. Can you find a way to make an impact on people's minds and, you know, kind of just for people that are a little bit maybe more on the fence about brand brand in our Arizona football that live in Tucson. Can you get those people to buy in because of a really, really big performance this week. I do think that the domino effect of that is very impactful Kevin. So I agree with you in that respect. It's probably not, you know, debilitating towards Brent Brennan overall. It would be huge for, of course, the end goal of this season where you want to go as a team.
But from a more long term standpoint, probably this week really as a big determiner of whether or not Brent Brennan is going to be able to get some buy in from the fans versus, you know, is it going to look a lot more like last week again. Well, how do we make sure that Arizona improves on this NAU performance and actually pulls off the upset of which they are about to touch down and a half underdog or into our friends over at draft kings me and Damon will be right back previewing this BYU matchup and talking a whole lot more big 12 football after our first break on the AZ Wildcats podcast. Find out all the ways that you do you visit play at hella.com for more details. Shout out to hella river Damon, but let's talk about this BYU matchup in terms of the on field side of things. Let's do it when I say Arizona versus BYU Damon, where does your mind go initially in the context of keys to the game so to speak or like what are some things are going to be very important in this match up against BYU on either way. It could be hey BYU is going to have to stop Arizona from doing this or whatnot. Where does your mind go first? Yeah, I think that the the run game for me is going to be a huge indicator of who ends up winning this football game. I know a lot's been made about Arizona's performance against NAU. You can see it right there above Kevin on our beautiful new scoreboard score bug that we've been debuting 35 seven. Right, like not a close game by any stretch. You didn't cover the spread though. It's a blowout, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily like a style points type of blowout like I was asking for on the free game show.
At least not in my opinion. Now here's kind of where maybe this statistic would disagree with that Kevin negative seven rushing yards allowed for NAU in week one. Negative seven rushing yards and again, NAU is you know definitely does not belong in a football game with Arizona, but they're ranked FCS team. They're not a bad football team. They won their week one match up despite being down multiple possessions. They had a phenomenal comeback. Like they're a team with expectations this year and Arizona is giving a negative seven rushing yards. It's stuff you see in a video game when you're playing college football 26 or whatever BYU. When you're talking about West Coast teams here because this is via super West sports. They're only showing West Coast programs BYU second to last on that list. Kevin and they went up against Utah Tech who is not as good as NAU is, but 49 rushing yards allowed less than 50 to schools that allowed under 50 rushing yards.
Jay Martin was the big 12 offensive player of the year last year. We know how good bear mock my raise on the ground as well. They have a phenomenal rushing attack. They also have a phenomenal rushing defense Arizona. Now I think we didn't expect our rushing defense to be that good. I think that we thought that they could improve upon last season where they were pretty solid on that side of things. But the past defense was really more of this team's bread and butter last year. I think that this this season like if you can make this run defense of true strength of yours, that's going to be massive in a game like this where BYU wants to run the football 100% they want to run the football. So can you go out there can you stop the run and then conversely against a really good rushing defense in their own right can Arizona go out there and move the football on the ground with Kendrick recent. So you know, Quincy Craig Antoine Roberts Jr. And just burn some clock and give no if a fetus imbalance to his offense. So it's not just going to have to be. Fafita Kiro ball getting you 25 plus points to get the W while your defense has a pretty good game in their own right I think that that's going to be very pivotal for me in this matchup is who wins the running offense versus running defense bad on both sides.
Yeah, I mean it also extends to the situational side of things right like you cannot have a situation where bearbock my arjus all right third and two we're just going at the middle QB power you can't stop it like that cannot be the situation in this weekend's game. They mean you bring up the running attack from BYU in last year's game the double overtime loss there is on a suffered 33 to 17 258 total yards for BYU in that one to Arizona is 164. But the thing I really wanted to point out is that in this game right you had a recent no go for 90 Craig go for 36 yards, modigo for 21 yards and then Fafita six carries for 15 yards. On the BYU side of things however 162 yards for 6.5 a pop to LJ Martin and then 89 yards at four yards a pop for bearbock my to touchdowns as well added in there I agree with you Damon I think stopping BYU's rushing attack forcing bearbock my to be more of a traditional quarterback in that sense I think it's going to be huge for Arizona especially when we know.
Danny Gonzalez in this secondary they they are going to be effective this season and I think this could be a good opportunity to showcase their their ball hockey abilities to showcase right there lock down abilities if Arizona is able to shut down the run I would love to see what bearbock Meyer has passing I'm not saying he cannot pass but I'm saying that is Arizona's route to winning this game is slowing down that rushing attack as much as possible because as Danny Gonzalez said in his presser today LJ Martin is as good maybe the best running back Arizona will face all season long so slowing that guy down is a lot easier said than done but can you hold them to less than 162 and if he hits 162 can you make sure bearbock my is also not gassing you every single time writing that that is something that I also want to see Damon in. You know, like the rushing attack is gonna be huge. It really is the trenches, I think, that's kind of where it takes me next.
I feel like Arizona is going to have to win the line of scrimmage battle in this game, right? You look at BYU's line. Seven other eight O line D line starters are seniors, right? Arizona has a lot of experience and size on the O line D line as well, right? I think this year, more so even than last year, Arizona has beefed up, bulked up, has a little bit more continuity, size and experience on both sides of the line. And I think this is an opportunity for Arizona to win the line of scrimmage battle with, I mean, toughness is key in this game. Like, what is it, Danny Gensal? Let me pull up the exact quote, because it had me fired up. I saw Justin Spears put it out there earlier today. Danny Gensal is just an absolute madman. He said, quote, philosopher, I hope the referees keep their flags in their pockets and let them kill each other. Keep us monetized. Arizona defensive coordinator, Danny Gensal is on the Arizona BYU game. On the children playing the fun children's game on the football field. Yeah, so I think this one's going to be physical.
This one's going to be nasty. Arizona's going to have to be the tougher team. And I do think that that starts with the trenches. I think it starts with the line. When you look at the O line D line match up in this one, Damon, what kind of stands out to you? I mean, BYU always has great trench play. Some of the best in the country. And I do think that they have, there's a couple of reasons for that, right? A lot of the guys that are LDS on the team, they go on mission for a year. So a lot of these guys, if they are LDS or a year older, then your typical college sophomore, college junior, college senior. And when you get, when you talk about O line men, being like prime age is incredibly important. There's a reason that freshman, underclassmen, hardly play on your offensive line. That's why when there's a guy like Jonah Savoniah, where he comes in right away, true freshman, he's starting, he's really good. You sit there and you raise your eyes and you go, that's an NFL football player, because he's able to do that from moment one, right?
Where he's going up against grown ass men at 18 and he fits the part. And so when BYU has that advantage, that's massive. I also think that Utah is a great pipeline when it comes to Polynesian players. And obviously that goes hand in hand with size a lot of the time, a lot of the big guys that you're going to get for O line D line play are Polly. So yeah, I mean, I think that BYU, because of probably those factors and maybe some lesser stuff as well, they always are going to have good line play. And so it's a true barometer for Arizona to test themselves at. I don't think that we really know what Arizona's trench play is going to look like this season quite yet. That's always seems to be like one of the big question marks about this program is because we're not the greatest recruiters in the world. And oftentimes size is so easily translated that like your top recruits are the guys who are the biggest, fastest, strongest. And Arizona has to work a little bit more underneath the surface
and find some gems that people maybe aren't all that heavy on in the recruiting process. And so we don't know exactly where we stand yet. I don't think on the trench place side of things great start and week one, especially on the D line when it comes to controlling the line of scrimmage there. But I do think that this is a real like first test for Arizona because we know BYU's lines on both sides of the ball are going to be at least above average, more likely bordering on great. And so what does Arizona look like when they go toe to toe with that? I mean, speaking of the lines here specifically BYU's D line in Arizona's O line, it brings me to another thing that I think is going to be absolutely massive in this game. Damon is exactly what Deborah brought up here. He got to keep Nofafita clean. You got to protect Nofafita in this matchup. You cannot let BYU's edge writers get to Nofafita in this matchup. It is absolutely huge. And I feel like protecting him in this matchup uniquely against BYU, it matters a ton. Right? We talk about how much he matters, not only the offense, but the team performance in general.
And I do believe that if you do keep him safe, it will allow him to be a lot more accurate, feel a lot more safe, and I have not have to scramble as much. Damon, do you think that Arizona's O line will be able to handle the challenge this week in Provo against BYU? I mean, it's kind of the question here, in my opinion. Can you keep Nofafita protected? And can your run game sustain decent enough yards per carry that you're able to have a free flowing offense, a balanced offense, Nofafita isn't having to, again, like I said, play a bunch of hero ball. So yeah, I mean, it's going to be certainly, I think one of the big key factors of this game is how your run game looks in relation to their run game as I set off the top. That was kind of my, my number one thing is the rushing attacks of both teams, the rushing defenses of both teams, and a lot of that comes down to your offensive line. Yeah, I mean, as that MFR in the chat says, kiss, keep it simple, stupid, run the ball, protect the ball,
make them beat you over the top. And I think when you have a game that's going to be as physical as this game, and like protecting your quarterback, winning in the trenches, playing with great toughness, it really, it does kind of come down to keeping it simple. When, I feel like we've seen this many different times, when the two teams are so kind of, obviously BYU is maybe of a different quality in terms of roster construction and these things. But I think the ideas behind the roster are built very similarly, I think, and you're going to have to be the tougher team to be the team like a BYU, especially in their house, right? I mean, I'll say this much. It's a raucous environment. It might not be the most negative environment. Bob Rock and Erratton were asking me earlier, do you think the chance are going to get kind of crazy? I'm like, no, it's improvo. So I think the chance are going to be quite tame, actually. You don't think that they get nasty? I do. That was more so like, aha, like, you know, it will be safe. It's improvo. They're not going to get mean. They can't kind of will get mean though, in my opinion.
Everybody gets mean. That's, I mean, I was just being facetious. But either way, right? Like I think it's going to be a raucous environment. It might not be nasty, but it's going to be raucous. I think it will. And I think that Erratton is going to have to be the tougher team in this matchup, damn protecting Noah, if Fafita is going to be crucial. We don't see fervor from BYU fans all that often when it comes to different college fan bases. When we have a week two game, this important, this pivotal, this early in the season, and they know the crowd is going to play a role. I think it's going to be maybe the craziest environment you play in all season long. And again, it's week two. And like we're talking about how pivotal this game is going to be, how difficult to win it's going to be, how it's going to set you up for success, or maybe failure for the rest of the season. I do think that like the crowd is like another just thinking the belt there of like, yeah, it might be the most rockest environment you face all season long as well, which is just, it's wild. It's a truly pivotal matchup at the beginning of your season.
It truly is. They're more some other things that you think Erratton is going to have to kind of involve in this game in terms of their attack against BYU. Not really certain as of right now. I kind of unloaded the clip for you, Kevin. I think I'll say I have one more, right? There's three T's in this one, right? Trenches, we talked about toughness, we talked about. We touched on this one, but I feel like, if you want to just talk, you can do that. You don't got to ask me first so that you can say something. There. But turnover is as well. Someone in the chat brought it up. You're going to have to win the turnover battle in this one, something that Damon brought up on our post game show. Against NAU is that we would have loved to see Erratton to turn NAU over a little bit more, make it look a little more easy to turn a team like NAU over because you're going to have to, as Ernesto says, you're going to have to take more. Thank you. Yeah, you're going to have to turn the team over, right? Ernesto says that if they can win the turnover battle, they can take more chances in running the ball. And I agree, it is absolutely, you cannot give BYU additional opportunities to 2 o'clock,
to have a 60-yard drive that takes eight minutes of the game, right? You cannot give them those opportunities, especially if, let's say Erratton does not score first in this game, right? Let's say BYU takes the kickoff and they end up scoring on their first drive. And now Erratton is behind the eight ball. You cannot lose the turnover battle. I would love to see no fee to make it out of here with zero picks. I'll tell you that much. For sure. Yeah, I'd love to see that. I think the turnover battle, certainly, it's for our more astute listeners and hosts of this show. That's a great point. The turnovers were not good enough in week one. We knew that that was going to be a big factor about this whole season because you were first in the country, you're second in the country, and turnover margin last year behind only Indiana. And they wanted all, and you had a great season, and had come out of nowhere, come from behind type of season, underdog story season. Can you replicate that type of success on the turnover margin? More than likely, no, but I'll tell you what doesn't help that,
starting off in the negative against NAU. Can't have that in week two against BYU. You turn the ball over three times, it's over. It's game over. Just hand BYU the win. Let's fly back to Tucson before anyone gets hurt. But again, I think that you have an opportunity to get in Bearbock Myers head a little bit. I mean, he hasn't faced a team that's this good on defense. Obviously this season, Utah Tech, nowhere close. Stay Arizona. And last season, Arizona's defense did give Bearbock a little bit of trouble until they started just running quarterback power every fricking play. And there was nothing that we could do to stop it. That's going to be probably a big point of emphasis this week. You would imagine by Danny Gonzalez. But yeah, I do think that you're probably going to have to win that turnover battle, at least draw even in it if you want to win this football game. On the road in a ranked matchup against a really good team that knows how to run the football and has a good defense. You just the recipe for losing those games
is turning the football over because they will control clock. They will cipher your offense. Those things are almost certain to happen. You can't be giving them free opportunities as well by handing them over the ball. Yeah, no, I completely agree with that, Damon. I do want to say we're going to talk about what the coaches are saying ahead of this matchup, including maybe referencing what Jared is bringing up there in the chat about Brent Brennan's comments as they relates to the crowd. And more, we also have our big 12 power rankings coming up as well to wrap up today's show. It is the AZ Wildcats podcast. And you should leave a like before we get back from our second outbreak. If you've been involved in an accident that resulted in serious injury or wrongful death, there's only one thing you can do. And that is your research. And upon doing your research, you will find out that the husband and wife law team employed a specialist to get the job done for you. They're about their business at the end of the day.
They stand on their business. Is what they say. They say they said their business on the table. They're about to stand on their business at the husband and wife law team. But they bring hundreds of years of combined trial experience to the table so you know that if your case dictates you need to go to trial, they will be ready for that smoke. And they cannot guarantee the outcome of a given legal case. But they can guarantee that you can reach them at any time. Talk about your case for any reason. You can cancel your fee agreement at any time for any reason. And you will receive as much in your pocket as they do for their attorney's fee. Even if they have to reduce their attorney's fee to make that happen for you. But the most crucial part about this is a transparency. I heard that somehow it gets back to us and we'll know, comically, that you don't like our show. But leave a like anyway on the AZ Wow Cats podcast. Sean saying dream scenario, Damon, cats win, horns win, snakes win. I'm indifferent towards the middle one, but the two ends there, I would love that as well. But Sean not doing much in the way of my, and I know he puts cats win first. So that does displace this a little bit. But today I had one of my,
one of my favorite ASU trolls, Marta Parta, respond to me with a reply to my tweet about talking about, does that say Michigan above Arizona on the others receiving votes? Cause that's funny. I could have sworn that they just lost to a Mac team. I mean, at least that's what I thought happened. Maybe not, who knows. But the response was number one, go big red. And my response was, why is it that every ASU fan has another college football team that they also for just as more, if not the same as ASU? Well, one interesting discussion point, question of the day. Why does, why do 90% of ASU fans like another college football team more than their own? It's actually fair. It's actually kind of fair. But again, Sean not helping my case there with his Texas love. No, but it's okay. We love Sean. We do love Sean. But Damon, we do have some things to talk about in terms of what the coaches
had to say. I will start with what Jared brought up in the chat since it is brought up in the chat here. Thank you for tapping in with us. Jared saying, Brent Brennan already pissed off to be why you crowd. They're not a factor is what Brent Brennan had to say. Damon, any feelings on that comment or just kind of some coach speaky stuff? Yeah, I mean, that's a little bit out of context. The way that Jared writes it there in the chat, which, you know, I think he knows that as well. Like Brent Brennan was asked specifically about the game in, what was it? Two seasons ago in 2024 and the disaster season that was 2024, where Arizona ends up losing 4119. May I add though, if you watch that game, a little bit closer than that scoreline suggested. I think that Arizona was in that game. There was like a, wasn't there a flea flicker Kevin that happened and Marquis Scroves killabrew like overran it by 10 yards when he like easily could have picked it off before half time. And that pretty much was like the nail in the coffin. But before that, I believe it was a pretty fairly close game.
Brent Brennan was asked about the home environment in Probo. Did he think that they had a big impact on that game in particular? And he said, you know, we turn the ball over too many times. That's a very separate issue. They have a great crowd though. If you let that be an excuse, it will be. So I think he was, I think his point was more that they have a great crowd. But the reason that Arizona lost that game was because they were turning the football over. And then I think that that almost goes hand in hand. You get the crowd into it more so when you give free opportunities at the football and those big momentum swinging plays happen, right? But I don't think that he's trying to like intentionally give bolts in board material for BYU and their fans here. But if BYU is smart about it, that's how they'll market it because that will improve the nastiness that we were talking about earlier in the show of that crowd in Probo. If if everybody in that crowd believes that Brent Brennan genuinely like thinks that their crowd is a non factor, they're going to show up in like
droves and be about as loud as possible. So it's probably the smart move from the BYU perspective to try to market it as like he's disrespecting you guys, even though I don't think that's what he was trying to do at all. Yeah, I mean, I think this is classic like we have a big matchup coming up. Why not try to just get all the the bulletin board material we can to try to get it all in there. But yeah, I mean, I think Brent Brennan is right, right? Like this is not a situation where like if we're walking away from this game thinking, man, Arizona could have won if the BYU crowd was just a little bit more tame. I think that that is a situation where we've lost the game three other different ways. Other than the crowd being a big factor, but like you know, you were saying there. I think that the crowd is going to be nuts. It is going to be very, very lively there. Did you see what what's his name? Jamal, is it Jamal Williams? The former BYU running back really into anime? Yeah, Jamal Williams. Yeah. What a crazy headshot that guy has when he was on the Saints looking like on purpose. Crazy, but really funny guy.
He I didn't know he went to BYU, but he went to BYU and he was on the sideline for one of these sideline interviews this past weekend when they were playing tech and he was looking at the crowd. And they were going absolutely crazy. And he goes, man, I just can't believe that they're having so much fun and they're all sober. This is, this is awesome. This is why I love BYU so much. You know what? I will be I will be charitable and say that I do believe the majority of those BYU faithful in the crowd. Sober. Are we really going to think that all these college football fans are just showing up to the game like with waters? They're well hydrated with waters, Jamal. They got no way to sneak nothing. No way. I don't believe it, but it is going to be a crazy crowd. I agree. And it is going to impact the game and hopefully Arizona can kind of do their part in the first half to quiet that crowd as much as possible. But another thing that was pretty interesting in my opinion that was said by the coaches, Damon obviously was Danny Gonzalez hoping he sees. Maybe somebody packs away out there.
The way that the refs hopefully are going to hold their whistle. But said Degy was saying that he felt like a lot of Arizona's offensive issues and offensive struggles against NAU or just some of the inconsistencies was a lack of attention to detail from some of the offensive players. And I thought that that was very interesting to hear, especially after so much lead up to this season talking about like trace by B for example. I don't know if that's who he was talking about, but that is a consistent, you know, theme and trace by B's time at Arizona. Of like, hey, we need to unlock in on the attention to detail. Those kind of small things there. But it was kind of, I don't want to say like concerning. I don't think it quite reached a level of concern. But it was like an eyebrow razor for me. To after week one, we've had all summer to kind of nail down these things. We got a big match up with BYU coming up right after this. And maybe they were looking ahead to it, kind of not all locked in on weapon NAU to their best ability. But it feels like we shouldn't be having attention to detail problems just before the BYU game.
If Arizona's offense is going to produce anything close to what we know that they can against BYU, attention to detail cannot be an issue. I saw our guy, Mo Paine, a shot to Mo Paine on Twitter. And he was saying like, dude, forget that attention to attention to detail bench the guys that are having attention to detail issues. And obviously, I don't know who it is. I don't know if you really can bench them is still trying to be BYU. But Damon, does that raise any alarms to you? See instead that you kind of call out attention, paying attention and attention to detail after that kind of performance in week one. I mean, it's not the best thing to hear in the entire world. But I also do think that that's what week one is for. That's why you play teams like NAU typically at the beginning of the season is because it's a dress rehearsal. It's a tune up type of game. And no, you don't expect things to necessarily look perfect after one in game opportunity. I'm a little bit more concerned about the idea that people are freelancing out there and doing what they want rather than doing what they're told and coach to do.
I think that's a lot different than not being fine tuned on offense or having maybe some issues with knowing all the plays or whatnot. That's more understandable to me than being like, I know what I'm supposed to do, but I'm going to go out there and choose superstar status instead. That's that like I don't love to hear. So I think that those two things are we can conflate them as different because they are different in my opinion. Again, you don't expect perfection in week one. You probably never expect perfection overall because almost damn near impossible to truly be perfect. But I think that week two like you want to see those things get changed. Look at the film. Find out what people were doing incorrectly. And yeah, know that going into this week, it's going to be a lot more difficult because you're not playing in front of your crowd. You're not playing in front of a pretty tame environment and Tucson to be fair and, you know, not that many people all that much in the stands. You're going to be playing in front of one of the craziest stadiums in all of college football.
And that will impact your communication and getting plays wrong and all that stuff. So yeah, let's attack what we got wrong this week and fine tune it as much as possible for next week because it's going to be the losing or winning is going to happen so much on the margins in this game. Like if you're the team that's going out there and delay of games are happening or illegal motions, things that are very easily avoidable. That's going to be in large part because of the crowd, but also going to be a real impact in this game in my opinion. I totally agree with you, Damon. And I do have one more thing on the what the coaches had to say side of the show today is that who is starting at the safeties position for Arizona. This is another tidbit from Justin Spears saying that Arizona defensive coordinator, Danny Gonzalez says free safety, Quint Olsen and slot corner Malcolm, hard dog are sure fire starters in the secondary. As for strong safety Gavin Hunter, Lee Molet the third and Daly Austin could start depending on the matchup if those guys want to start quote they had better practice their asses off says Danny G.
I love that guy. I love Danny Gonzalez, but we do a little bit of update in regards to how our secondary is shaking out this season. Love to see Quint Olsen, get some national shiny NCAA kind of tweeting about his story, which is pretty cool. Malcolm, hard dog. Obviously very productive in his time in the big 10 and now obviously coming over to Arizona already making an impact. So it's nice to see the secondary not taking too long to start to kind of see people claim their spot on the hierarchy. So to speak of the death chart, I'm glad the heading in to be why you were not thinking, oh man, who's going to step up and play. You know what I mean? Like it's nice to see guys like Quint Olsen and such really step up early on in the season, Damon. Shall we get to our power rankings after our final break? Yeah, let's do it. I do want to say on Quint Olsen though big big game in week two here. I do think that you know Quint Olsen looking like he belongs on the football field versus NAU is a lot different than looking like you belong on the football field versus BYU. And those are big time athletes, big time recruits. We know they have a lot of NIL resources there like they brought in a lot of good football players and I would expect Quint Olsen to look like he like belongs versus a big sky team.
But if he's truly the trading stuicks, Chuck Cecil level walk on which I think you know a lot of people have floated out. Hand up. I'm a part of that now because I made a piece of content that compared them to those two guys. I think you need to see that happen in week two as well. I want to see that Quint Olsen belongs. I love it very well said for my guy Damon dog and we're going to wrap up today show with our big 12 power rankings. We are so back football is so back and we'll be right back after our final break on the easy Wildcats podcast. Leave a like stick around. Don't go anywhere. It's hard to find stuff like that for any product genuinely like hey if you lost broke it replace it easy money no questions asked but speaking of lots of questions asked big 12 power rankings are so back. Damon and shall we kind of have this overarching conversation after just a week and a half of football of course yeah we know everything about the big 12 which is truly the easiest conference to predict in the country and I think all of us every year are. Right on the money with what teams we think will be good and what teams we think will be bad yeah no one's ever been wrong power rankings incorrect based on vibes never never ever ever I do I do want to address one thing though before we get into power rankings Damon Jared saying Arizona fans do not sound confident and I feel like Arizona fans this time around I feel like our sounding logical I think we're just trying to be reasonable yeah I think we're sure like yeah good I would I would say I think we're looking at a lot of things like that.
I would say I think we're looking at it like hey we're underdogs going on the road this would be a huge game for us to win there are some things we need to do in order to win this game the crowd is going to be crazy I just think we're not sounding over confident I think we have the right amount of confident where it's like I believe in my quarterback I believe in my coordinators I believe in my coach right now. That's good enough for us to have a chance on the road again as a touchdown underdog I think it's more just respect to be why you you know if I think that we all think that BYU is a very good football team. I'm not sure that that's really debatable. Bear Bachmeier is a great talent and LJ Martin was the reigning offensive player of the year for a reason right like that they just they have so many pieces the defense is is really good so many pieces up and down the entire roster that just leads you to believe that their floor is extremely high. I don't know quite what they're ceiling looks like can they make the college football play up can they win a game there that's up for debate but I do think that the floor is that I think we're going to be able to do that. I think that the floor is that pretty much no matter what even in a season where things don't really go their way there's still going to be a contender for the big 12 title game pretty much no matter what and so I just think it's more so respect factor for what BYU is bringing to the table here that being said I don't necessarily agree with Jared's take that if bear wins this game then he's automatically best cubic in the conference that's to me that's that's not how football works it's never been how football works it's never will be how football works.
Football is above I think every sport essentially like the ultimate team sport where you really need every single key cog in the system to be working properly for your team to be successful you can't you know I think the most glaring example of this is you can't have a bad offensive line and a good quarterback and expect your offense to be good because who's blocking for the quarterback who's blocking for the running back like that's you know that's going to impact how good your team is going to be and I think that BYU has the most or second most complete roster in the conference and that Texas Tech and BYU are running away with that superlative like if you're if you're putting together the most complete rosters BYU and tech are easily one and two so in my opinion you put no if a feet on Texas Tech they're the best team in the conference you put no if a feet on BYU they're the best team in the conference right like that's because I think that he's the best team in the world. I think that's the best quarterback and I think that those are the best teams right and so that's for me that's a I don't I do push back on that sentiment but at the same time I think that me and you and most Arizona fans here have a lot of respect for what BYU as a team is is you know potentially going to be able to accomplish this year.
100% Damon last year last year against like Iowa State which Sean brought up in the chat which was a great point you go into that game and you you're like man if we win this game we're going to get a lot of respect for you. We're going to get a lot of respect around around nationally for Arizona and then you go out there and you just get dog walk from the moment the game starts I think that there's all a world where I think with a big expectations type of game on the line we're envisioning like just a disaster start to the game so I do think that the first quarter how that goes is going to be pretty much telling of how the game is going to go in general if Arizona can keep it close I feel good that this game is going to be close and could go either way but I do think that there's a world that's going to be a great deal. I do think that there's a world where BYU can get off to 14 nothing lead and all of a sudden it's it's scary hours for the cats. Yeah indeed and Damon let's do well I want to make the transition it might be scary hours for our mentions after we bring back big 12 power rankings you know obviously it's early right we cannot make any to crazy declarations nothing cemented in stonia it's just the first iteration of our power rankings.
So we can kind of make this more of an overarching conversational addition of big 12 power rankings we should we start from the top of the bottom here Damon yeah let's go ahead and stop start from the bottom I would say right yeah yeah let's get the trash out the way first. I feel differently than you I see in the back end here a team for your 16 that is not in my 16 slot I have Oklahoma state at 16 I think it's fair. I was again they were the goats of football in general yeah and here we are I mean Drew Mestemaker he's the quarterback captaining the worst team in Kevin's opinion in the conference. Better than for feet of the don't forget better than for feet don't forget this guy is the greatest court of back at North Texas last season great is quarterback big 12 ever seen Drew Mestemaker truly check down Charlie versus Tulsa this weekend I mean I'm not again I'm not sure I mean I'm not again I know I said this on the post game or maybe it was the pregame Kevin I don't know if I saw one pass go beyond the sticks from Drew Mestemaker all game I watched about half of the football game and all he did and the team was down multiple scores he's not even trying to press the ball downfield I take that back there was one I remember the game ceiling interception that he threw was more than beyond the sticks so he tried he at least tried it once and he turned the football over I get it completely you know I'm not sure if I can do it.
Completely you know you know I do these things a little bit different in from the standpoint of I I kind of do my power rankings based off of who I think would be favored on a neutral site game versus each other that week and so from my standpoint I think that Oklahoma state is not the worst team in the conference Kevin but I completely understand and respect anybody putting them at 16th and their week one big 12 power rankings because I'm not sure if I can do it. We're not sure if he's not going to throw the ball power rankings because they earned that with their embarrassing two years in a row lost at Olsa two years in a row and then last year was just such a disaster too and then like they have to be like so much different Kevin. Yeah. I mean we're talking with Pete Mundo and this is like no shot at him because he's not the only guy who thought this take but he's talking about Oklahoma state being back he's talking about this conference is just better when Oklahoma state is back and relevant the big 12 needs Oklahoma state to be relevant and it was almost being like celebrated as like we did it Eric Morris Droom estimator we did it guys the Cowboys are back the pokes are back.
And then you watch one football game of them and you're like oh my god it's the exact same as last year it's a disaster. It really is a disaster Eric Morris the 10 year that they really never got off the ground at Oklahoma state after one week what do you got at 15 I got Iowa state at 15 or in six at 16 Kevin I did yeah I'm I'm starting right here at at 16 with Iowa state they beat southeast Missouri state. By 28 points shout out. Southeast Missouri state is not a real school in my opinion. Seam old you that's like I think the debatable even a university truthfully so only beating them by four touchdowns not that great and yeah I'm not they have zane Flores at QB right like I'm just not the biggest believer in Iowa state that was last year's last place quarter back I expect I expect that to continue this season I think Iowa states the worst team the conference I know Rocco Beck's not like the goat right like I know he's not like one of the greatest players ever but going from a guy who didn't really make a ton of mistakes in Rocco Beck to Zane Flores tough dude I feel bad for I feel I truly feel bad for Iowa state.
Dude prime ribbon link we need to be flavored ramen like that's that's how Iowa state fans mostly feeling right now but yeah that is brutal at 15 another team that underwhelmed as in relative to their expectations I got TCU at 15. Bill Belichick B.J. in 2026 that's all I got to say again I totally understand that line of thinking I like I can't disagree with it I can't argue with it I think you know it's the it's it's probably honestly truthfully the right way to do these power rankings but that's just not the way that I do them yeah and so I have Kansas at 15. They beat Long Island who I didn't know how to football team heated Arizona rival Long Island by the way I just don't think Kansas is going to be very good this year I think you're going to have a down year after you lose Jalen Daniels so I'm going Kansas 15.
I am just going to keep a trend here if you lost you're at the bottom yeah. Baylor number 14 wow that's a that's not fair no I don't think so but and I'll wait actually I kind of make a switch because we didn't do a graphic so I can do this verbally Baylor's going to get mentioned later I think I think I'm going to go Iowa state here at 14 here and we're just going to kind of move teams up but you can't see that I can't see my end but yeah I think I'm going to go Iowa state here at 13. And then yeah I just copy paste what you said but Iowa state to hear for me but above all in bold the heading says Zane Flores is our quarterback. I expect Iowa state to be here in this quadrant of 13 to 16 bottom four the whole way through correct Zane Flores their quarterback all the way through all right 13 to 16 that's where I expect y'all to be Iowa state 14 for me. This is the number one Zane Flores podcast in America for a reason Kevin Oklahoma states 14 for me I got Oklahoma state 14 I think that they would beat Iowa state and Kansas if they played Iowa state and Kansas that's why I have them above those two teams.
But I also think that they had the most despicable performance by far and that they deserve all the slack for it so or all the flack I should say for it so yeah Oklahoma state 14 for me. You know 13 Damon we're going to go ahead and put Baylor here they did lose was it against an SEC opponent. Yeah they only lose by a point. Yeah could they have won that game also yeah and I have to be fan side of five with four plates. Yeah I can only put them above with so many teams that caught a dub in their first opening game and if they win they could go right back up to where maybe they are belong in this conference wherever you feel that that is but for me they're coming in at 13 just above Iowa state. I got West Virginia at 13 they almost lost to coastal Carolina it was a disaster second half. I mean you go up like 21 nothing and you still almost find a way to lose that football game to me I value almost beating a team like Auburn more than I value barely beating a team like coastal Carolina.
So that's why despite the O and one versus one and no I have West Virginia at 13 I got TCU at 12 though Kevin who you already mentioned on your list that might be a little bit high for TCU honestly they might they might deserve to be lower in my rankings but as I stated like I'm truthfully just going with TCU do I think they would beat these teams that are underneath them I do but what a terrible loss against UNC this week. And yeah I mean you just you can't have any confidence about what that team's going to look like this season because there's such a hot and cold program as is and then they go out there and they lay a complete egg in Ireland and now you have the whole like we went to Ireland is that going to ruin our season. Thing on the back as well despite the loss to a bad team like it's just all of it is a complete nutter disaster if you're a TCU fan. My buddies I got I got a couple friends that are big time TCU fans they went to TCU they they love TCU football I got the text this weekend basically saying sitting here at work all week thinking about how my football season is over before Labor Day.
That's tough. That's terrific. That's a tough spot to be in. Yeah it's actually horrific. 12 spot I'm going Cincinnati here. Okay. Be one of the worst power for teams in Boston college. Maybe the worst. Yeah. And I honestly just not to impress from that performance but they did get a W so they come in 12 for me 11 though. I have a team that you just mentioned. I have West Virginia here in the 11 spot barely beating coastal Carolina but I think they're worse than promising things specifically from their backfield. That were shown in that one so give me a West Virginia mountain mama at 11. Yeah I think that we're pretty much in the same neck of the woods here. I got Baylor at 11 for their loss to Auburn this weekend where they almost won and if you win that game you're probably like I probably would have had you above where I have Colorado because I think that would have been a more impressive win than beating Georgia Tech beating Auburn but DJ Lagoa has marbles in his brains when it comes to making winning play.
It's the three words like if you put his brain in a bird the bird would fly backwards. Correct. Yeah. Like he literally has no brain cells when the game is on the line and it's going to impact the win versus the loss and unfortunately it reared its ugly head at the final moments of that game against Auburn. At 10 I got Cincinnati who like we said beat the dog crap out of Boston College I think that maybe goes to show that they're not as bad as maybe I thought that they were going to be going into this season because if you can beat another power for team that handle I do think that you're at least an okay football team you know what I mean and yeah something that totary mentioned to me and I think maybe goes a little bit under the radar when you're talking about teams that you know maybe don't have as much media juice as like a Cincinnati. They have one of the best if not the best online in the conference they did last season they brought almost all of those same offensive lineman back. Do you remember like how little Brennan towards me was getting sack last season we were bringing it up like oh my god they have like twice allowed the half the sacks of the second place team big part of the reason Brennan towards me even looked good in my opinion last year and they bring back a lot of those guys I mean that can go a long way in terms of getting your team to be successful if you have a top 10 online in college football.
So maybe they deserve a little bit more respect I got them at number 10 though. Do you think so as we sit in the home like damn I should say that Cincinnati damn yeah damn I could have been playing none of this would have happened damn I could have been playing my 10 spot Kansas no no jalen Daniels figured out a way to get some good rushing are thought there as well yeah 10 Kansas from me. I got him affairs nine though this is a lot higher things started interesting yeah right around here literally right here in my in my list 9 10 7 those were all the bad teams that beat awful teams or bad teams that lost in week one and boy did you see that beat up on a bad team I think it was 73 to 6 but the one cookman got whoop done yeah UCF at nine for me. I got UCF also at nine Kevin I think but then cookman not a program that I am in the least bit impressed by you beating by that margin basketball map at yeah they were okay they were like a tournament contender last year for basketball but yeah not in football UCF they do what they need to do I think a lawns of Barnett could be a decent little quarterback.
The guy comes in from James Madison he was a you know good player at James Madison they were top 25 with with him under center so I do think that Scott Frost might have found a decent quarterback there and if that offense looks good that's not going to be an easy matchup for any team I think UCF could be decent this year for sure at number eight Kevin I have Colorado. Okay same same same spot for you same colorado at number eight great win one of the wins of the conference this week I had them bottom three so that's a huge jump from what I did last week to now I think I had them 14th now I have them 8th that's top half of the conference Colorado maybe you deserve a little bit more respect maybe the crazy internet trolls were right Kevin and we should have you know apologized. He's got a guy's hat in hand to our friend Scott Proctor inside of Scott we are so so sorry that we ever made fun of or made any jokes about the Colorado buffs.
That's too many jokes maybe they're maybe they're a good team who knows they could be all right that was a their defense was impressive I'll say that much defense impressive offense not so much right and I think that we were all kind of curious as to what they would look like with the American as OC not saying it's done or like he can't figure it out a little bit more so but didn't expect that defensive performance from Colorado holding Georgia Tech to just what 14 points and yet like you had the worst defense in the conference far in a way last season so yeah shout it to them. Yeah shout to Colorado I feel like they could probably hang in that like eight ish range this year and that would be a very good if their defense is legit and you know I expect you to and Brennan Mary and to figure things out a little bit I think that they could be a you know middle of the pack type of team in this conference tough schedule though yeah yeah seven for me I got Houston here I just seven I wasn't that impressed yeah I mean it wasn't the most impressive of winds but Oregon states not bad no Oregon states not
bad I will say like this specifically seven through four for me I feel like I have different tiers here one through three I feel like is what it is right I think four through seven for me arguable for any team to be in any spot there I would listen to any argument we'll get to those teams here in a second and then you have like the car right out UCF and then you have 10 through 12 and then you have the bottom four that's kind of how I see this week one tier going and so I feel like Houston you can make argument for them to be higher but I think this is kind of their floor as wasn't that impressed I was more impressed with some of the other things above Houston not necessarily kind of putting down their performance but not bad I mean you got a dub we'll see what you can do next week I'm not mad at it seven are ready for my number seven Kevin I am I don't even remember what you had on the list I looked and I remember Arizona State wow how dare you you scumbag what not number two or number one what is wrong with boo I have to say I am not buying in on the Rose Bowl in the making that is being talked about in Tempe because they beat one of the worst teams in all of division one 70 to seven or whatever it was I did say to TOTRI on our on our our week one big 12 reactions video that we didn't if you want a little bit more big 12 talk we're going to be doing that every single week but TOTRI asked me about the score line for obvious reasons and I sat there and I said
you know what it does put it into perspective a little bit because that Morgan State team was about as bad of a football team as I've ever seen play a high level college football game and yet we really lost by that score line like it's just it's just unthinkable how did that happen it is I'll tell you what happened a team one team quit and the other team was paying their players but still should never ever ever look like that at the end of the day that being said I got a sc seven to about where I had him before somewhere in that range upper half kind of on the bordering on on midway point of the conference looked good great offense a lot of good skill players I just I don't care about what you do against Morgan State we'll find out about ASU and what type of team they are this week when they play Texas saying I'm on the road I got ASU at six on my list right here after Houston and honestly like the reason that they're even above Houston like you said you whoop up on Morgan State like I'm not necessarily like it's
to put you in the top five for this one but the reason that they're higher than you know Colorado they're higher than Houston for me on this list is because you did lose Sam Levitt and I know that you and I maybe not the best Sam Levitt fans out there but he is a starting quality quarterback for them I would take him probably over cutter bully at least today yeah right you did lose Jordan Tyson you did have to retool and you did that and clearly whether that continues is yet to be seen but for one week week one a 70 to seven that is a hell of an offensive performance to put out in defensive but it wasn't against Morgan State so number six for me I think it's totally fair I mean listen I you know I'm not trying to disrespect ASU here and I do think a lot of these schools as you said kind of in this like four through seven range probably could go in a lot of different scenarios number six I got Kansas State who whoopped up on Nichols very similar type of performance 71 to three I think was the final score of that game
and I mean I just don't really care what you do against Nichols there's been a lot of hype about Kansas State right now though I'll tell you that much Kevin did you know that they closed number three to win the big 12 title I had no clue I saw a big 12 preseason title odds and it had Kansas State above Arizona Houston Utah and I was like really shocked by it to be completely honest with you I don't really necessarily know where or the hype saw coming from but I do think that you know Avery Johnson another year under his belt like he's a as much as he gets flack he's a good quarterback yeah he's not a great quarterback but he's a good one great hair sure and I think that Kansas State good program so I got them at six I think for them or for me them in ASU's weeks very similar I had them rank neck and neck before the season I have them rank neck and neck as we've gotten one week into the year number five on my list is also Kansas State it is we have the same in that sense Damon I am more impressed by their win over
why am I blanking on their name right Nichols Nichols then I am Morgan State maybe that's actually indicative that I don't feel that way I can't even remember the team's name but yeah I'm more impressed with that performance that I am over ASU's but it's close like you said comparable performances there moving into number five though yeah or sorry number four rather got Arizona at number four uh this is mostly because I think you could argue that like you know ASU did you do number five yeah Kansas State oh Kansas State was number five okay because I think we might have skipped over me I got Arizona number five but we can talk about this in relation here I got Arizona just outside that top four you have Arizona yeah I have Kansas State of five where you have Arizona and I have Arizona F four the only reason I have Arizona F four is because the bottom and the top of this list right the middle is kind of determined by the the results you put out there into the week one or week zero whatever you put in my opinion relative to expectations that's where I find the top and bottom teams and I think Arizona my expectations for them were to
be really damn good this year in the big 12 right and they kind of were good they were very good on defense maybe didn't turn the team over as much as we maybe wanted to see but they got the win they allowed negative seven rushing yards technically shut out NAU so you're Anderson thank you for the seven points that NAU got and I think that relative expectations and making sure this bread didn't cash true maybe there's a little bit anyway but you know what I mean like I think that Arizona relative to expectations kind of came through for me a little bit in that sense on defense offensively they did underwhelmed based on what I expected them to do that's why they're not like any higher than where they are or also they didn't lose so I'm not gonna drop them crazy so this is kind of like in that four five six ranges where I would have expected Arizona to be answering this without a game and they win and they look great on defense offense we know it's gonna be better so I got Arizona at four maybe a little bit biased there but Damon who is your four spot yeah I I'm gonna go ahead and go
with Houston in the four spot who I didn't think looked all that impressive as you said Kevin but Oregon State is a decent football program and you know what I think that they have a really good coach and I like what they're building over there not enough for of a downside for me this week watching them play to move them or bump them below teams that I already really had them above that being said I do have Utah at number three who I had below Houston before the season I believe I had Utah three or I had Houston three Utah four but now I'm gonna go ahead and flip those schools I think Utah just looked a little bit more impressive and their week one performance where they get the blowout they get the job done and yeah I'm just I'm not I would say that I I definitely wanted to see a little bit more from the Houston side of things like if they're truly a big 12 title contender but again not enough downside in the past week to for me to like truly bump them down Utah beats the crap out of Idaho though yeah I mean this is where I have my shake up I got tech at three dang
I got Utah at two and I got BYU at one okay I mean tech I was told that it didn't matter who you had a quarterback you're the greatest team since sliced bread yeah you were oils gift to the game and I feel like for that you got to do better than 23 points against I will be increasing at home you got to do better than that yeah I said the same thing about Arizona in terms of well offensive you got to do a little bit better than that against any you but I was also not told that Arizona's football team was the greatest gift that the sport has ever seen so with the greatest money or greatest roster money could buy you know and I mean in terms of Texas tech minus the QB I'm dropping them to three I got Utah at two and I got BYU at one I just feel like this BYU team is the best mix of talent maturity and I think continuity that the conference has to offer I think BYU is your best team in the conference and it also maybe it's the pro wrestling in me but I think it sets up for you know a king to be slayed by Arizona right like it definitely is nicer for Arizona to
take down the number one team of the conference than the number three team the conference but I can say honestly that did not play into my rankings I have Texas Tech at three Utah to BYU at one how did your top three shake out yeah I got Utah three you know they do play Idaho it's again not I'm not going to like yeah lose my mind about them beating Idaho by 50 but good win Utah looks solid again I I said it on our reaction big 12 reaction episode that we did me in touch tree and if you're looking at who's winning the Kyle waiting him divorce right now Utah is up early right 52 point win against Idaho man and Michigan like has to cheat their way out of losing to a max school winning hand probably think I'm like dude I just could have stayed for tired I could have been on a lake and not one of the great ones yeah so Utah I mean good start the season for them and then as kind of you similarly have I got BYU in that one spot I think that they just looked more impressive I think that they're more complete I expected to see more out of Texas Tech again I wanted
style points out of Arizona I think you need style points out of Texas Tech that's what I'm saying you guys have a hundred million dollar roster what why are you why are you in a close game with Abelene Christian man yeah I know Abelene had 70 million to throw around and making a tough tough matchup what what conference did they play in Abelene yeah I don't know the American they play in the whack let's look at the whack preseason pole for football Kevin and see where Abelene Christian is was supposed to to finish here okay okay so there they are the preseason number one in the pole um the coaches pull they're tied so I guess at least that's the saving grace there is that they're they they might be a pretty solid football team Abelene Christian I still think that BYU deserves to take that top spot from you um and I'm not gonna move Texas Tech down to three like my good pal Kevin here is but by the way that's at Kevaux Post on Twitter if you want to yell at him about
it but definitely we'll get a response I I think BYU deserves that that crown for now those are our big 12 power rankings after week one lock in next Monday for a week to edition of power rankings Damon and a whole lot more on the easy wildcast podcast we are off tomorrow though because a weird week with Labor Day we're off Monday off Wednesday but we're back Thursday Friday Saturday it's a big game day on Saturday Damon we're gonna be previewing that all week long got anything else for us before we get out of here today no I think that's gonna do it for the easy wildcast podcast today on a victory Tuesday which we don't get too many victory Tuesdays Kevin though we really don't no unless like cherish them yeah unless like basketball plays on a Monday or something yeah no we could get a victory victory two day in that circumstance it's rare it's rare it's rare yeah no certainly uh we will be talking previewing and of course uh predicting what's gonna happen in Arizona versus BYU top 15 matchup in Provo all week long can't wait to get into
