Well, Atlanta has of course become quite an active spot during the past several years with all of the sports features that have been eyeing the city and have gone there. We're

6:22talking about your team. We're talking about the coaches, all-amerity game that has gone down to your neck of the woods. But most specifically, I'd like to move rapidly if we may, Rankin. The last week's game against that rugged ball of war coach team and this certainly must be a great feeling to see your team come along and do so well against the team like ball of war. Well, last week, of course, we were really juiced up. Sky-high, there's no question about it. Maybe Baltimore was a little flat, but we gave a great account of ourselves. I think it's a half time. We were leading it to seven to six and the stands spontaneously got up and gave us a standing ovation. And, of course, this probably helped us a whole lot during the second half, although we lost the ball game in the second half. But it was a great feeling for us and a great feeling for the players and the farads of Atlanta's concern. I just can't say too much about it. It's a great sports town and they've really taken a foul for us to hard regardless of our record. I realize that you've followed, of course, say statistics mean nothing, but last week, I would

7:22like to mention to our listeners, Rankin, that last week against the coach, you had 17 first down to 13 for the coach and your rookie quarterback, Rady Johnson, was 14 for 27 while United was 10 for 25. And, of course, you have to use some yardstick and this is a yardstick to use on the progress that you're making, particularly when you think the team is tough as the coach. Now that's correct and we think we've come a long way. Certainly our defense has improved the measure, but we've been bombed and pretty bad a couple of times this year, but I think, perhaps last week, we might have become a football team. Obviously, it takes a good while to put a team together. They came from various outfits with various philosophers, various tactical situations, we've got to put them all together as a team. It may very well be that last week, we became a team. Of course, we've planned with a rookie quarterback and it takes time for them to develop, there's no question about it, but we think we've come a long way in the first nine games we play

Well, Rankin, not to die, I'd dress too much, but we know that your background was initially insurance, as a matter of fact, you helped found the life insurance company of Georgia, and we know that your avocational thoughts have been in sports throughout your entire life, but what do you think of professional footballers of business? Oh, I think it's great. We'll say this, you said I helped found the life of Georgia, it was founded 75 years ago. This is our 75th anniversary. I wasn't there at that particular time, I'm not sure. Well, I had a father was, yeah, that's right. And he, of course, was a great man, but as far as sports are concerned, professional football, this is probably the greatest event that's ever happened to me. He's certainly coming here to Yankee, stayed him on a beautiful day like today. With a great crowd that we have here today, and we just hope we can put on a real good show fight. And as we talked just a few minutes ago with Rankin Smith, president of the Atlanta Falcons, statistics don't usually mean too much in the final outcome. But the Atlanta Falcons did produce some good ones against the Baltimore Colts, showing 17 first downs to 13 for the Colts, and 152 yards in passing to 105 for Baltimore. And the rookie quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons, Randy Johnson, was 14 for 27. While Johnny United was 10 for 25. And those are the facts and figures of that game between the Baltimore Colts and the Atlanta Falcons. It's an indication of how close the ball game really was. Let's take a look at the starting offensive lineup while the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants respectively. Starting at left end for Atlanta from Oregon State who came to the

14:54Falcons from San Francisco, Burnburg, 6'4", 215 pounds. Had left tackle, number 72, 6'5", 255 pounds, Don Talbert, who arrived at Atlanta by way of Dallas. At center, will be Frank Marchaluski, who played with Los Angeles, number 53, 238 pounds, 6'2", he played his college football at Minnesota. The full back is someone who needs no introduction to New York Giants fans, number 30, Ernie Wheelwright, who played with a Giants last year, 6'3", 236 pounds. And the starting fliker back will be Bob Sherlock, who came by way of the waiver road to the Atlanta Falcons, he played his college football at Memphis State. Bob Sherlock will be the fliker back for the Atlanta Falcons. So much for the starting lineup, for the Falcons and now for the New York Giants. And as we mentioned a few minutes ago, there have been some noticeable revisions in the starting lineup for the Giants. Starting at Split-N will be number 45, Homer Jones. Willie Young will be at left tackle. Bookie Bowlin will be at left guard.

17:04Greg Larson, the starting center. Rookie Charlie Harper has moved into right guard. Pete Case will be at right tackle. And starting at tight end in place of Aaron Thomas, who moved to fliker back position, will be Bob Crispino. In the backfield, the starting quarterback will be Gary Wood. The running halfback will be the personal Joe Morrison, who moved over from the fliker back position for today's game on the benching of Ernie Coy. So Joe Morrison, who is the backup quarterback to Tom Kennedy, is now the running halfback for the Giants. In his place at fliker back, will be the speedy Aaron Thomas. And the fullback at last report was indicated to be Chuck Mercy. So there you have the starting lineup for the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants respectively. Kickoff will take place in just a few minutes from now. The Giants making their appearance, lining up in front of the goal to our left Atlanta in front of the goal to our right.

18:07The Giants will kickoff, the Atlanta Falcons will receive. And as we prepare for kickoff, here for the play by play description, Ted Brown. It's a cold day here at the stadium, but things should be kind of warm out in that field. We're waiting for the kickoff. Both teams lined up. There's the whistle. Gogolack approaches that ball and boasts it. And over end, not too long coming out the 10 yard line, Didal takes it there, goes to 20, 25, and he's hit hard by two Giants with knocked down on the 30 yard line. With Joe Wellborne in on that kickoff team to make the tackle. It'll be first on 10 for the Falcons on their own 30 yard line. And I guess if they've ever pointed toward a ball game for their first win, this could be it. Up front, Cytcavich, Moran, Davis and Condron. There's a snap from center, a quick hand off to Ernie Will Wright goes up the middle to about three, four yards, and then that's where he's hit by Freeman White and Jim Cytcavich. And they spot the ball down the 35. He picked up five, so second and five on the 35. Ernie Will Wright, former New York Giants, talked to Ernie before the game and he enjoys living down there in the land of as a television show, plays as a guitar and sings, and he also runs that ball pretty good. All right, they break it, second and five on the 35. Randy Johnson's looking right and left waiting for it. Just the early minutes, takes the snap from center again. The big man, Ernie Will Wright, doesn't go anywhere. No gain in the play right up the middle. Mike Cicollello gives him a big shoulder and brings him down. It'll be third and five with that ball still on the 35 yard line. The Giants and the Falcons. And after last week's foreshowing by the Giants, a big shake up. And they'll be Giants playing new positions, Aaron Thomas and Flanker, Joe Martin in the back field.

He looks like he's going to pass a short one over the center. We'll run the edge up ball the 45 yard line. He's not down at the 47. And that's where he's hit by Henry Carb. It looks like enough for the first down. Ernie Wheelwright, who would like to put together one of his best games here in the stadium. And so far he's doing it. Another first down for the Falcon. First in 10, and that balled in the 36-yard line. Now, Ted, they say when you come back to the giant to play against the giant after having been a giant and you arrive in Yankee Stadium, you have an awful lot of pep and Ernie Wheelwright has it today. First in 10, on the 36th of the giant, both teams ready. Birk out of the left side.

24:46Sherlock, flank to the right. Long call. Randy Johnson takes it, goes back, throws out to the left side. Duke Birk, he has that ball and he's not got a bounce at just about the 30-yard line. And so he picked up six on the play. Clarence Child gave him a show to get him out. It should be second and four on the 30. Well, you know, Ted, we mentioned that this team led the Baltimore coach just last week at half-time, seven to six. And when you can move the ball against Baltimore, you're capable of moving a ball. It's second and six on the 32. Sherlock, flanked out to the right side. Randy Johnson, the quarterback, waiting for that snap from Marshal Uski, the center for the Falcon. Ernie Wheelwright moons two steps to the right. There's a quick hand off the coffee. He finds a hole, goes over the 30 to about the 28. We'll see just about where, not too many yards, maybe two. 25:47Jeff Smith coming out to the sideline. Looks like an equipment change, a thumb sort. Ted, that may be interesting to note at this point, with the ball and field goal position, that the place-kicking specialist is another ex-giant, Luke Kiroak. Jeff Smith came off, but Woody and Stan Zurak went in it. The left spot, left linebacker. Now they're lined up again. Third and three, a big third down for the Falcon. Third and three on the giant, 29. There's the snap from center. Here comes Wheelwright. He tries to pick up the three and does he? He's hit one by two giants and then falls forward and could possibly have picked up that first down. It's going to be close. Lawrence Charles, once again, came up to make that tackle with Don Davis. Looks like he has it. He has it, enough for the first down. Until they put three first downs back to back here at the stadium with nine minutes and fifty-eight to go in the first quarter. 55:09how tall are you Ed I'm six foot one and I played a 200 pounds and I'm two five today so about that and well last week as you may or may not know uh Roman Gabriel was a Los Angeles quarterback now he's six four and a half and he weighs 228 pounds and that's a giant and this is a man that's executing that's right Ed uh uh it's down through the years and we saw you walking around down on the field with Ken strong and Ken of course played with you in those years yes you did Woody that's right two really great ones on the field and I'm I'm thinking that as you fell as reflect and you think about football as it exists today and I I noticed that you're a athletic director of high school on on the island is that true Woody yeah so I think that's one of the nicest jobs I've ever had I met the Meta brok junior high at East Meta long island and I worked for the age group of 14 to 15 year old boys and it's just great are we going to expect

56:11even bigger boys coming along here Ed well it seems that way I don't know what the trend is but they at that age I coach a ninth grade team and we have a lot of boys at a hundred and sixty hundred and eighty pounds and kind of an update a hundred forty pound of year big one so they are getting bigger and taller we notice you're a fishling with Ken strong and Jim Lee howl the fun pass and kick contest how about what these young fellas accomplished down there well it's marvelous they do so much of course I try to think back in my own day I was born raised on a farm and I didn't see a football and I got to high school and here these boys nine ten eleven years old and they are working with a football all are getting good coaching and they're constantly playing with it so I think it's got to get better they have the advantages they have the great equipment of the day specialize they have good coaching and the boys are willing to play somehow the parents today have the means to let the boys play they don't have to work they go out and play

Ed what about your athletic programs in high school now are the youngsters geared towards the fact that the sports has become a much more sophisticated thing than it was back in the thirties.
