Austin Watson signed...then waived?

Austin Watson, as expected, signed a 1-year, 2-way contract with the Detroit Red Wings today.  But the confusion came minutes after the news that Justin Holl cleared waivers came across the wire. The Red Wings had waived newly signed forward -- Austin Watson? If Detroit was always going to waive Watson, why waive Holl? Better yet, why waive Holl when later that same day it was announced he was staying in Detroit? What could this mean for Kasper? Well, the answer is probably more boring than you were hoping.
