Australian GP Qualifying Delivered Absolute Madness

About this episode

Well...that was quite wild. Not as bad as it could've been though!

After months of waiting, the first F1 qualifying of 2026 got started and...it felt like opposite day! At least in terms of Red Bull. Whilst Max Verstappen was thrust into the barrier by his car, his teammate Isack Hadjar flew the flag for the team and ALMOST got said car on the front row...not quite enough to best the Mercedes of George Russell or Kimi Antonelli, but still a valiant effort.

Meanwhile, Ferrari faded over the session whilst McLaren had a decent showing with Oscar Piastri leading the way. Audi overachieved despite a reliability issue and Racing Bulls showed that the Ford powertrain of theirs has legs after all! What else could we get from this Formula 1 outing before the big day?

It'll only get better from here Because even though the FIA was really all about safety, in fact going as far as taking out one of the straight modes In Fp3, the teams were able to lobby it back enough to get five straight modes back into the session But the very fact that we got this cripple between Oh, are we going to have a straight mode activation point at that back straight Tells you all you need to know that even the FIA is still a little bit like Oh, we're not exactly sure what's going to happen with these rules There's still a long ways to go But I can still say with confidence that this is not nearly as bad as 2014 There is something to work with and the crowd was plenty satisfied As we'll talk about in Q3 later But I know that you're going to want me to talk about this because Max the staff, but what was that? Because even though we're all quick to blame Max and thinking, oh, he's got a skill issue Or, oh, it was all about the Adrian UE Grand Effect car Well, no, as was pretty much disputed very quickly It was down to a mechanical issue where the rear just completely locked out on him

He had nowhere to go and there's even a little bit of a question mark As to whether or not he injured his hand in some shape or form Due to him gallantly not taking his hands off the steering wheel or at least his thumb So he was nursing them so hopefully he's not hurt himself But either way, this was not ideal But as his teammate was able to show later on, that can't have some pace Not quite as good as Mercedes, but certainly a lot more than Red Bull probably expected As well as its sister team So there's a lot to say about what Milton Keynes was able to do And as you can probably tell, I am still quite happy even though it was a bit bit of sweet But I think one of the other success stories as well was the fact that As to Martin did not suck as hard as all of the headlines painted them to be There's a big video in all of that And it wouldn't surprise me at all if Papastro in a fit of peak It's nice to drop Honda within the next year or two You thought was that brown and McLaren were angry at Honda Just you wait until the Canadian billionaire gets his hands on Koji Watanabe

And what on earth are you John Dewey team? Because as to Martin's all about image But the image of Fernando Alonso just getting out there anyway Not only getting through the 100% limit comfortably But almost getting into Q2 That was crazy under three seconds behind the fastest time The spread in terms of who actually got into Q2 Was not nearly as bad as expected So you really got to get points for Fernando Alonso here I don't know what this team would do without him Because he's just riding through the pain In fact, he's just saying Oh, it's not the big deal It's a phenomenon and we'll get me through As in like, he's got balls, man This team really needs him right now Because well, he's strolled it and even qualified And I mean, we'll get on to Alpine in a moment But they seriously dropped the ball Maybe it was not all about the power unit after all This might be a McCarran 2018 situation Which ironically, Renault did highlight for us all So that ended itself as weird Yes, the Mercedes did show off the pace And the McCarranians were certainly out there

And Ferrari did sort of fall off a little bit Although they did use a very interesting tactic Which would not surprise me if we see time and time again in Q1 At least with the big four Considering that we got the Cadillacs in the Aston Martin's at the moment Taking up four spaces in the Q1 drop zone There's only going to be really two Who's going to fall out? Well, I mean, with Colour Science Continuing to have problems There was only one spot Which was really up for grabs And that was taken up by Alonzo And then the sapon having his crash There wasn't really that much jeopardy So Ferrari just gave it a go I think it might actually hold out Because as the commentator was saying It might be more to do with the way you deploy your energy Rather than the small difference between the C5 and the C4 tyre That's going to be another strategic twist That we might be getting ourselves used to But okay, the Cadillacs points for trying They get on with it, they did drop out But they certainly just showed up And they qualified within the 107% limit So that's all we really can ask from Caddy really

They gave it a good effort, they showed up They didn't embarrass themselves It can only be uphill from here Not that, Caddy, good job And Fernando, man, my goodness That was just a spirited recovery drive After all the stuff that we'd been privy to the last few days Then it gets into Q2 And as I touched upon, Alpine I don't know what to do here Something tells me that we probably might get Christian Horn As swooping in to try and recover this Well, I don't even know what this is Because we all thought that in terms of development Alpine might have stumbled upon something When it came to their trick-rear wing Going a very different direction In regards to deploying the active error mode at the back But as it goes to show They still got a long ways to go to recover Their entire structure from within In terms of the error and chassis department Because, well, they've got plenty more cash Coming in from Renault to be able to do that Davi Sonshaz's effort seemed to be not really doing much And even though Colin Pinter did give many fans a stare

And not getting into Q2 He did at least give it a try And Gassley gave it a try But it was really not much cop there And it really just makes me think that Flabio Is going to be spitting feathers right now He'll be wanting to find somebody to blame here But at least neither of them crashed That is something But this is not the fifth best team at the moment I mean, that's easily being contested By racing balls, my goodness those two Especially Arvid Limblad But as we will touch upon He is not a stranger to controversy As we saw him for me the two He did get into a fair few scrapes As Curacy enough last year in his rookie year Propping rookie year did all of the better men Because coming into the pit lane My other boy, Gaby Having gotten into Q3 Which for Audi is fantastic One step higher than what Gaby was able to do in the summer Last year His car conked out For reasons as of yet unknown as a recording If I do find out I'll add it to the screen But he conked out in the pit lane Lawson spotted it

But according to Limblad and racing balls There was a communication issue As in, it wasn't Lawson backing Arvid up Because I know many will be quick to Just point at Liam and say It's your full Liam Because yeah, previous According to sources Was not told about what happened with Gaby I mean, I think it just shocked the world I mean, it certainly gave me pause for thought I saw plenty of memes I was celebrating How are you getting into Q3 and then Hold your horse's law Yeah, that happened Yeah, that was gutting After all of the solid reliability From the Bahrain testing And FP1s through 3 That was a bit of a time down But just so you know Limblad almost colliding with a teammate Was down to the pit wall Not informing him in time And when you take that into account with what Call up Pinto had to deal with In regards with Hamilton It's simply down to communication issues You need to tell these drivers a lot sooner About what's going on ahead of them I think the teams are discovering that for themselves Because if you look at Colin Pinto's report from practice It was simply down to the fact, Colin Pinto

He was told to stay on the line by his own team Because if he had moved outside of the racing line He probably would have been considered a dangerous driving It would have been even worse He wasn't formed by his crew To remain where he was And in the case of Limblad He simply wasn't told anything at all So that is a very important chestnut in regards to Who are you going to blame? In this case Hi, this is Pablo Torei from Pablo Torei finds out And today I want to talk to you about boost mobile Because we spent a lot of time analyzing inefficiencies in sports Overvalued contracts, money tied up in the wrong places And so on But those inefficiencies aren't just on a roster Sometimes they're in your own monthly expenses Boost mobile says switching to their $25 unlimited forever plan Can unlock up to $600 in savings a year That's $25 a month for unlimited data, talk and text When you bring your own phone If that money is trapped in a pricey phone bill It might be worth a second look Visit boostmobile.com to learn more

After 30 gigabytes, customers may experience slower speeds Customers pay $25 per month as long as they remain active On the boost mobile unlimited plan Savings claim based on January 2026 Boost mobile survey of 1,000 Americans with single line on limited plans Comparing average annual payments of major carriers To 12 months on the boost mobile unlimited plan For full offer details, visit boostmobile.com The hustle doesn't have to hurt If performance pressure is making it hard to breathe Growth therapy helps you navigate stress, set boundaries And actually feel like yourself again Whether it's your first time in therapy or your 50th Grow makes it easier to find a therapist who fits you Not the other way around You can search by what matters Like insurance, specialty, identity or availability And get started in as little as two days There are no subscriptions, no long term commitments You just pay per session Grow helps you find therapy on your time Whatever challenges you're facing, growth therapy is here to help Grow accepts over 100 insurance plans Including Medicaid in some states

Sessions average about $21 with insurance And some pay as little as $0 depending on their plan Visit growththerapy.com Start now to get started That's growtherapy.com Start now Growtherapy.com Start now Availability and coverage vary by state and insurance plan It's the pet wall Limblad, it was very, very lucky Not to have caused any damage or hurt himself In the very point, pit lane entry I mean, you gotta give Albon points for trying He wasn't able to get into Q3 He did get into Q2 though It just shows that Williams got a lot of things to try and solve in the next few months To try and get some weight off that car Even though I think they did bring some parts to Melbourne They have to really get that car lighter and lighter and lighter Like they did throughout 2024 Only then will they be able to find hand over fist when it comes to actual pace And they might get themselves back in the equation

To within me be getting in within as much of P7 or P6 or something like that I don't think right now P5 is really something that you can hope for Which I remember James saying that For after 20, 25, P5 was the bare minimum P5 now is looking a bit of a distant dream at the moment And that is very unfortunate This is going to be a very slow burner period for Williams and I'm just sorry But Audi fans Oh wow I'm sorry, I'm showing my buyers here And you might be thinking you're a McCarran Turnclaw But come on Audi, I've really been standing for the last couple of years And this was proof that they are going to be a really big force to be reckoned with And they're not too distant in future Already getting a car into Q3, Q2 comfortably And just showing that they can easily throw it in amongst the main pack That have been around for a much longer time With a brand new power unit With a vitally refreshed Salber team And much more resources coming in from Moiburg, the Audi HQ

And I think soon or maybe right now their headquarter is in Bister Around motorsport valley But yeah, I'm not going to lie, the reliability issue And not being able to get it to the white line in time Meaning that it was dragged away by marshals So Audi couldn't even try and repair it to give at least Gabi one running Q3 Maint that that must end of their day for them There is still a point to be had But then again, their starts according to testing statistics Are one of the worst on the grid So it wouldn't surprise me if they did fall back in terms of the order But if Gabi can remain in the top 10 or Holcombberg Rise up the order actually actually getting into Q2 Unlike last year and many times last year There might be some points afforded to Audi and if that did happen That would be a huge achievement for them I would just be happy for them to even finish the race quite frankly So a cheeky P10 I'll take that But now we must get into Q3 Because that's the real bread and butter here And yes, sure enough Mercedes did look dominant

However, that's not the main story here Because as of recording this very video Things are not looking so smooth but total squad Because even though I must give them a huge amount of kuda So getting Kimi Antonelli to Q1 at all After his shunt in FP3 Photo giving him a very much needed pep talk Yes, Kimi did ascend to the front row alongside George Russell Within I think 2 to 3 tents After the matter is that not only did I think one of the pit crew Put a literal foot or toe out of line To trigger an FIA stewards inquiry after the session But then also leading two cooling fans And that probably would have been a hefty fine on its own But the back that Lando Norris hit that luckily Primarily with his front left tire And only clipping the front wing just a little bit I really do think on the grounds of safety Mercedes will be docked a grid place Or maybe 2 or I think according to the rules a maximum of 3 Even if they don't get that

It's going to be a very A very shoddy impression in terms of overall competence That's what you were really trying to bank on this season This was a wookie error This was a really big glaring oversight Two fans, one of them actually landing on the track And being obliterated into smitheroos That's just bad form there What that might entail Is the other standout story of Q3 Was that Isaac Hajar, Max Verstappen's teammate Got into the top three Very very close but he still did He bested the Ferrari, he bested the McLaren There's potential in that Red Bull car just yet And it didn't come from the Dutchman So maybe, just maybe The second seat curse might be on its way out Isaac might have been able to help Red Bull crack it Or at least he's much closer to Max It doesn't make you wonder where Max might have been Had he actually not had that mechanical issue And crashed out of Q1 But the other story is that Ferrari Were just simply not there

Even though we all thought at testing That they were going to be the stars of the show They were very much within the middle of the Q3 roster But granted, given their race starts as we've seen From practice at Melbourne and at Bahrain They are very much going to be thinking Before P7, bad fine I mean, it might be P3, former Claire If Kimmy gets a three-place grip drop This might throw a cat amongst the pigeons Just because George Russell got on to pole Doesn't necessarily mean he'll remain in P1 Even though he is a dynamite when it comes to race starts himself, George And as for the McLaren's Even though they were punching much above their weight They were still in the running in maybe making a case of being the third best team right now But PS3 was able to use the hometown hero advantage To be able to pick himself ahead of Lando And throughout the entire session He just looked more planted, whereas Lando It was just one thing after another for him, quite frankly Him not being quite as settled with the MCL40 As is Australian teammate How that will translate throughout the season

It remains to be seen It might be just a case of Lando getting himself up to speed Whereas PS3 was just worried on it Things might start to converge as the season progresses Or maybe we might see, like last year, a sudden surge If a certain mechanical part is afforded to Lando And it just transforms his feeling and vides with the car So it's too early to say who has the exact advantage But first blood goes to PS3 in that regard And then the two racing bulls I mean Lawson just about out qualifying Limblad at the 11th hour Or be a bite over a second But the fact that Limblad was even the equation at all Should give Liam Lawson the PBGBs Because we've all got Nikola Solo in our minds in F2 And if he wins the F2 Championship this year I would very much be concerned for the Kiwi Even though Red Bull is not nearly as cutthroat As it was just six months ago or something The fact remains is, though, is that I really did enjoy this qualifying session It was quite tense, there were mistakes along the way There are going to be with a brand new regulation cycle

But given my experience with previous regulation changes Sure, it wasn't as cut and dry as 2022 as far as I recall But it's certainly nowhere near as bad as 2014 It's something that will take some getting used to There will be many who are railing and raging against the system for the fact that In this era formula one, as of now You have to slow down going into high speed corners To try and get enough recharge for the remaining sector of the lap But this is all just binding their feet right here The regulations will be modified over time They will be afforded means to upgrade their systems The race starts, I think the teams will be able to patch it Or make better use of the turbos or the MGUK they've already got The FIA might be able to provide some development tokens To improve the race starts and the spectacle And if we do see a reduction of 350 kilowatts to 250 We might no longer see situations where teams and cars are compromised In terms of having to slow down lifting and coasting

Just going to take time to get some real world data But it's nowhere close to the disaster many were fearing The teams being so paranoid it was going to be 2014 They commissioned Barcelona, the second to Catalonia To have that shake down in the first place May I remind you that was organised by the teams That's why the private security was intense And then for me the one was just like Can I get in on this please? Can I show some coverage? And the teams were like Fine I suppose But they were very much limited in what they can do As we saw in Bahrain And Australia, even though the optics are very much from the FIA and for me the one management too Really show that everything is fine I genuinely believe as I saw in qualifying Everything is not looking that ropey It's looking okay This is a good baseline And even though Mercedes are showing themselves to be the favourites It's not as imposing as I thought it would be I thought it was going to be over a second or something like that The actual spread for seconds, not that terrible Or it's actually under three If you take Cadillac out of the equation

Then just getting up to speed So I'll just bear that in mind as we go into the race itself I'll be producing the winners and losers video Not that long after the race itself It might be a little bit limited Things might have developed as I've been editing this video I'll try and make sure I put a capture on it But there you go I would say as an Audi fan I'm quite pleased And I say for the show Yes Ferrari did very much Drop the ball in comparison to what they showed in testing But it might not matter that much qualifying Because Ferrari are not afraid to try different things as we've seen And with Toto, I'm sorry You wanted to look bulletproof Well, there was plenty of strength No, I'll give you that Hi, this is Pablo Torei From Pablo Torei finds out And today I want to talk to you about boost mobile Because we spent a lot of time analysing inefficiencies in sports Overvalued contracts, money tied up in the wrong places And so on But those inefficiencies aren't just on a roster Sometimes they're in your own monthly expenses Boost mobile says switching to their $25 unlimited forever plan
