Wake up! Come on, guess wake up, man. David Haw. David, huh? You muted in. Sorry about that. Hello, George. That was one of the best questions you've ever asked. Yeah, I'm sure it's going to get an answer just as good. This is Haw. Yeah. Okay, Haw, check me out, man. Jared Payton. Me, we want you to see this Jared Payton wearing his father's number number 34. And I hear my name again, and I'm like, who's calling me? So I look back at the people working and it's not them. It's this guy that's sitting down right by the door and he goes,

Jared, man, man, I love you on the score, man. I was like, I'm going to be off doing it. The hot and Peyton show. I'm going with the bears here, man. I don't care what anybody says. Bears are going to win this game 27 to 23. But I think what we're going to be talking about on Monday is how the run game was established early on. I have the bears winning, too. 31-27. Five receivers in the pattern. Williams. Plus to the left. And he's going to take off with eyes for the end zone. Touchdown Caleb Williams. They will win it. With sweat, patient run, bust throw in the bears. Take the lead. Another fake to my non-guy. Williams sets up. Goes into double coverage. It is Paul Komet holding on for the touchdown. Williams will perform the drive. Pumps. Pushing. Get your way from the traffic. Wide open space. There goes Caleb Williams. Tide zone.

He's emotion. It is swift. It is a touchdown. Okay, my non-guy breaks free. 61 yards to the house. Williams. The new green. Rod welcome, man. Touchdown Chicago. It's Johnny Walker. Swift breaks through. And breaks free. Icing. On a season opening, kick for Chicago. Would you say 89 total points? That's 64-10. 95 point ball game. 58 points. Well, the bears are getting the first place treatment. One of the toughest schedules in the NFL. They take a first step towards those lofty goals and expectations. A monster game 59-37 Chicago. Get up in the morning with the Haul and Peyton show. Mornings 5-32-10. On Chicago's sports radio.

103-3 this score. So I gotta get up in. Good morning, Chicago. Welcome to Haul and Peyton. Chicago sports radio. 103-3 is a score. It is Monday, the day after. And you are listening to a Plumber's 911 football Monday. Presented by Beauty Bank and Great Clips. I am David Haul along with Jared Peyton. We are here till 10 o'clock. Breaking down. Everything there is to be broken down about a game. That Jared in sports. Rarely do the results match the hype. But that's what happened Sunday in Charlotte. The bears often showed up. There was much said about the Ben Johnson scheme and the rival of Caleb Williams in year three. And the results exceeded the hype. We saw history. That was elite. And that's gonna be a lot of fun to talk about. How are you? I'm doing great. Good morning. What are we getting? What are we getting? Shout out to Dustin and Brandon behind the glass. I appreciate you boys.

Yeah. That wasn't your grandpa's bear's offense that you used to see in yesterday. High flying. And just an enjoy to watch. I know right out the gate a little nervous. Just by that first series. But then after that finding ways to be able to get your playmakers the ball. Caleb Williams seems to be on point early on. We played our predictions. When I said 3127 I meant the first half. No you did not. I meant the first half. Because it was 31 to 24 a half time wasn't it? I'm like okay that's a game. That is a game. And then they come out and like we have said about Ben Johnson the football maniac. He did not let up. He was not going to ever let up and he won't ever let up. This is a coach that said this past offseason. Over the summer he wanted to have the highest scoring offense in NFL history. And then he went out in game one and made history.

Set records. What happened yesterday was how could you have anticipated that? Maybe only one guy wasn't surprised. That was Ben Johnson. But everyone else was like oh my gosh. Miles is a gape. Looking at the Bears. It's a big story in the NFL yesterday. Who would have thought? Who would have thought? The Bears are when you look at Sunday night football and how they're going to present. What happened around the league? Yesterday Josh Allen in the bills coming back I guess that was because they are who they are. Joe Brady took a shirt off. Do you see that? That's when you know you've arrived as a head coach. Whenever everyone else mocking your behavior. But then it's about Caleb Williams. The Chicago Bears and the Ben Johnson offense. Well I think all eyes were were on Ben Johnson. Caleb Williams in this offense coming into game one. And with all the question marks on the defensive side of the ball coming into this game it was can this offense be elite and score in high volumes.

And what we saw yesterday was as they found a way to do it. And it's real real simple. They Brandon played it right out the gate. They ran the football yesterday. And this team is based on and this offense is based on running the football controlling the game on the ground and then taking the shots when you need to. Caleb Williams was efficient yesterday. Yes there are some plays that he probably missed that he talked about post game that we all saw. But still was efficient and was able to spread around the football and not just one running back yesterday getting off. You had two running backs. Mononga had a kind of speed. I did. You did not. Yes I did. You did not. Yes. Here's what we said about Kalmanonga coming in. Kalmanonga he's a downhill runner. Kalmanonga he will run over you. Kalmanonga boy his low center of gravity. Did you really think that it's a Kalmanonga he's capable of running away from the secondary and everybody else that guy showed a burst. I didn't know he had. Yeah I did know. Okay. You know you're the running back master. Both these guys the way that they did it with the outside zone.

I posted on X about it because it really jumped out to me with seeing Deandre Swift and how patient he was yesterday in getting to his spots and keeping the ball front side and trusting the front side. Especially on the right side of that offensive line. David it was that's what you want. If you need to get a yard or you need a play in the run game run it to the right side. They know they even know it's coming. That's the thing about this Bears offense right now. You can know what's coming. You can prepare for what's ahead and good luck stopping it. Because in your example you know what's going to the right side as Drew breeze who did a terrific job in the booth pointed out the Bears ran to the right more than any team in the NFL last year. And there's Darnell Wright earning his money his big money. And Jonah Jackson who's really very quietly a very dependable good right guard above average pro bowl caliber and they're just running right behind him. They're making the room.

That was an impressive display by a Bears offensive line. We came into the season. Let's face it doubting a little bit because Drew Daumann was gone. Replacement guy maybe Garrett Bradbury not up to snuff. And I get in Bratz and Jones. I think that people wondered if he was just the winner by default of that job. Yeah. I mean people we had those question marks about both of those two positions. But when you looked at guard and then to write tackle you knew you felt comfortable with what you had there. So if they could find a way to gel over time and what thing that we never really saw Dave was he get really see the unit together and with all the attachments you know there with the running back. So now we're starting to see it. Can you imagine over time how much better they're going to get once they become like a really cohesive group and have games underneath their belt if they can stay healthy? Well, I'm not sure they can get much better than that. No, no, no, I'm just saying. I know what you mean. And the running game is what timing but in timing and all that stuff it's hard.

You almost used and we talked about it last week as these first like three games is almost like preseason games because you're not getting a lot of that work together. You're getting it and joint practices and also in the summertime. But game like experience when you're out there in the lights are on. You're not getting that. So there it's a custom but give credit though to the wide receivers yesterday. Man, a running back dream to have wide receivers want to block for you down the field. You know what they say. Dustin knows what they say. Dustin Johnson offense. You know what the wide receivers live by the mantra that's probably on every book every wall in that meeting room. No block. No rock. No block. No block. The rock. We need you to get out there. It goes to show how unselfish these guys are on the offense. Well, it's at some point in time. It also becomes fun for these wide receivers to get the biggest hit maybe of the day. Johnny Walker was hunting people.

The clean Freeman was knocking over linebackers. Roman Dunes was so focused on blocking. He got called for holding wasn't at the first run of the day. Correct. That was an emphasis. You knew that they were being coached to. All right. You need you need to establish yourself as a blocker. And then we can think of you as a receiver. No block. No block. No rock. You got you got to. That's a must. Everybody on their offense understands their role. His specific role on every play. This is an offense that already in week one. Now I get it is the Panthers. Julius Peppers was running out that door. Luke Keekley was in the booth and not in the huddle. Okay, this is not the Panthers defense of days of the yesterday. But it's still an NFL defense and the Bears rolled on him. 59 points. It would get together. 96 points was the most ever in a week one. NFL game. And as far as the Bears franchise records for points in an opener. It shattered the mark from 1948.

Yeah, go all the way back there. History. History. And I think also. So we'll get to the running game. We'll talk about the receivers. Roll in that because I think it was huge as well as you point out. And the offensive line. What can you say? But the biggest takeaway. I think league wide and the thing that people are nodding their heads and agreement about Caleb Williams. Caleb Williams is even better than it was last year. And is this is the beginning of an ascent toward super stardom. What he did yesterday. As I wrote in a column on six 70s score. com, the word that I used to describe what Caleb Williams did yesterday was Mahomsian. Wow. When you have a quarterback like that, do those types of things on a team that has deficiencies. Yeah. The best defense. Well, we'll get to that. It's a long show. We're going to be until 10 o'clock. But the defense is a liability. There are some flaws that obviously we'll discuss and they'll address.

But when you have a quarterback and a head coach together like that, collaborating the way that Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams did yesterday. It can be a giant eraser and they elevate everyone else around them. And that's what Caleb Williams did yesterday. What I love is that he was efficient in the pocket and really dangerous when he left it. That's what makes it so hard for defenses to try to figure out how to be able to stop you. Pick your poison or what you want to do. Because even when you feel like you have him, he finds ways his feet are so good in keeping his eyes down the field, whether that's to throw the ball or to take it off and run. And what did I tell you, David? I said, if he can give you around, I don't know, 50 yards, not on design runs, but just 50 to 60 yards, but taking off and getting out of bounds, getting first downs, this dude was scoring touchdowns. Tell me this. Does he look faster? Yes. Does he look faster to you to these? He's looking quicker because the next gen stats and he's 20.8 miles per hour or whatever the case is.

He's as fast as he was last year, maybe faster when being chased as everyone tends to be. When you're looking at Jared around the league, he's maybe the fastest quarterback in the NFL. I mean, the way he takes off it runs, I'm watching it right now on the TV screen. It is this ability to feel comfortable when things are breaking down around you. That's that iceman mentality that he has. I don't know what it is because some people we've watched other games in the NFL yesterday, when things were breaking down, quarterbacks getting nervous and then taking sex. He has this ability to say, you know what, I'm going to take off and use my legs and still being a young pup. Menals, legs are still fresh. Ted carries for 65 yards, two touchdowns. I think what you're referring to, I think there are two elements here. Number one is the speed and the athleticism, which I think he clearly has worked at.

He's just maturing as a man and he's getting bigger and stronger and faster as a quarterback. That happens in the course of the NFL, you know, running back or quarterbacks career. That's that's the physical, those are the physical traits that I think people have noticed. Oh boy, he's he's leaner. He looks quicker, right? But what you're describing, I think, is also what is the most obvious thing about yesterday and Caleb Williams. He has this innate pocket presence that the great ones have. And you don't always see that in quarterbacks, even starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Guys who have had success throughout college and high school and just maybe were born to play the position. Caleb Williams is at a different level when it comes to sensing pressure, knowing how to escape it and then keeping his eyes down the field and what to do and where to throw once he's clear. Understanding this offense a little bit more as well year two with Ben. I think also two gives him that comfortability to be to say, you know, I can do this, but also I know where everybody's

going to be. And I mean, you have this way to be able to sense his eyes or what is special to me. His eyes and his feet because having that ability with all that stuff going wrong around you to say, Oh, you know what? Let me keep calm here and I'm going to take off. I'm going to use my feet to extend this play, whether that's to throw the ball or to get up field. Now defense has got to figure out what are we going to do? How do we bring do we bring enough pressure? Do we not bring pressure? So now you got them on their toes, which makes him kind of the guy saying he's like the puppet master. Hey, what you want to do? And he's in control. And that's what I think that's what scares people around the league about him. What's scary because when the plays do break down, he can still make something out of nothing. Yeah. But what was I think even what showed most progress yesterday was when there was a clean pocket and maybe good coverage, he was not afraid to settle for the check down. I love it. He was very efficient in the first half especially the first three quarters. He didn't need herrokes in the fourth because of the decisions

that he made that were maybe safe and simple. And then he was still able to win necessary place the ball and provide the special like that throw to Colcomat, which oh my goodness, shakes. You could not have wanted that to be any more accurate. And it was it was one of those throws just that's an oh, while moment, David. He couldn't have walked over there and placed it in his hands better than he threw it. It was crazy. And we're I don't know. It's it's something special about this young man in his game where I think he's starting to understand too that I can do I have all the tools in my toolbox. I can I can do it all. This is what I mean. You're three. This is coming together. It's and and that's that one. In the relationship with Ben over this off season, I think is paying off in a big way because he those two are collaborating. You know, he was talking about how he felt like, Oh, Ben didn't really like me that first. Yeah,

I mean, I was trying to you have to prove yourself to your head coach. I got that that that has that's going to hold you accountable that that wants you to be the best too. But then now I think they're starting to join together. Yes. And when he could be his coach on the football field. Oh, man. And he knows when he has to pick his coach up on the football field like when he makes really misguided decisions like, Oh, maybe to go for it on fourth and one at your own 21 early in the game when really that was just hubris. That was a coach Ben Johnson, whether he wanted to acknowledge it or not after the game after his offense did score 59 points and nobody's going to position to quibble about much. That was the worst call he made all day long. And you can two things can be true. He's a football genius. He is the right man for the moment. This offense is historic and going for it in that position was wrong. Said Dan Campbell. Yes. But that's who that's who that's

our that's the coach. We all know that in him. My issue my issue is not from where going for it. I know he's going to go for it. It's just the play call for it. It's like it was about the sneak. Caleb has some issues with this quarterback sneak. So the one thing that we know that we've talked about already the right side of your offensive line spread him out a little bit. So go that run run with your running back. Okay. Come on man. If that's what you really want to do. Jerry, it was there were 10 minutes and 35 seconds left to go in the second quarter. The Bears are leading 21 to 14. Fourth and one at the 21 yard line. Hey, the 21 yard line. Go. You don't do that. Just go get it. And he was on a polygetic out. He was he was not here in any of it. No, he was not here in any of it. I have time. He had time. He said to Bears radio though. Well, you know what? They picked me up. And okay, I thought that was a moment of clarity. After the game, he was defined. I agree. It was

one of the things where he didn't want to talk about it. We scored 59 points. What he want. So they picked him up. Caleb Williams was asked after the game on the field to Fox coming, coming into before he went to the locker room to celebrate. This was Caleb Williams after scoring 59 points in the opener. You know, we expected this offense to be good, but could you have predicted 59 points? Good. Yeah, I think I think that's our expectation each week is to come out here and do our part next you to please. And you know, a part of that is it's been the best offense and you know, and then a foul. You know, it starts with this starts with the first game. It starts with how we start and how we finish and I mean, Kudos tried defense for it. You know, I think they came out with 24 in the first half and then they put up a touchdown at the end, but you know, it was it was they did a great job kind of shutting them down at the end. And so, you know, without them, we wouldn't be able to have this many points. So we're excited for this win. And we, you know, we're going to focus on this next week coming up. You guys had nearly 300 yards on the ground.

That was your backs, but that was you as well. How are you able to make plays with your legs today? Yeah. Just knowing that I got I got a weapon with my legs and coach always tells me that is, you know, it's it's going benefit the team. And you know, that's that's all I care about. All right. You told us how comfortable you are in year two and Ben's offense. What is your expectation of what this offense can do? Yeah, I think I think we'll be exactly what our identity is when we when we created in the offseason is as a smash smash mouth football team. And then we're we're on the cutting edge of of exposure plays and passes and all of that. And so, I think we're going to keep trying to chug along and find ways to get better. Obviously, we, you know, we had penalties and all these different things. I almost threw a pick down here trying to close them out and you know, things like that. So, you know, we're going to focus on getting better and find ways to to to be better than we were and put up more points. Hopefully. Congrats. Love the stash. Awesome. Thank you. Love the stash. Caleb Williams to Fox after the game. Couple good textures. Waiting in already. 262. 100 degrees couldn't melt the iceman.

630. 59 points is amazing. But did you guys notice in the good better best after the game? How locked in they are on Ben Johnson? We got something big here, fellas. They're always locked in on Ben Johnson after the game. Were you surprised they did good better best? I was wondering if it was coming back. I thought that was so 2025. I did too. You wanted to move on from 2025. But it's it's hard because it works. There's something there's something to body. He's getting it. He gets airtime when he does a good better best. Good better best. You're listening to a plumber's 9-1-1 football Monday presented by Beauty Bank in great clips. This is the hot patent show. We're here all morning long. We're going to get your phone calls at 7 o'clock just to let you know what we have coming up today. Owen Cruz is going to join us at 7 o'clock. TJ Edwards. He was a linebacker on the field for every single snap. One of two defensive players have played every one of the 68 snaps and defense. So he was lit through it all. Jared,

he joined us at 8 o'clock. Brad Biggs, Biggs time is 9 o'clock. Your calls throughout the morning. There's a lot to get to. We need to get dressed the defense. We didn't even get to that yet. But there's plenty of time for that. Yeah. That's because it's a big job. It's a struggle right now. You can't just say, well, you know what they gave up 37 points and they're going to get ready for the Vikings. No, but we kind of knew what the issues were and they were a little bit glaring. But there were some positives though. We got to we got to tap into some of the positives. Dilettineman gets a game ball. I was surprised he got a game ball. Ten tackles led the team. He was active. He was involved in that force fumble. I thought Jalen Johnson didn't get enough credit for that play when he forced the fumble. Theoneman was in on the ball with his helmet. So he played it. He played it for his first NFL start. I think he can be very happy with that. I think you have something to build on. And I think a lot of eyes were on him going into this game just being a rookie and being tested a little bit. But he answered the questions and he's going to get better as time goes on. There was college football to discuss. We'll get to that because it was a very

eventful weekend again and a big night down in Texas on Saturday when the Longhorns came back to beat Ohio State. The Cubs, one, two out of three against the pirates. They are tied with the Phillies with the Padres charge and hard in the wild card race and the White Sox begin the series of the season tonight in Cleveland after losing two out of three winning the biggest game of the year on Saturday night. Randall Gritchock with the Homer of the season salvaged one game down in St. Louis, but they are reeling. They fired their director of scouting Mike Shirley. They have a lot of distraction. They have a lot of issues that they need to address and the season is over in two weeks. They're clinging to a half game lead over the Guardians. There is a lot to get to this morning, Jared. And we're going to start it all with the pick six. When we come back, it's Han Payton Chicago sports radio 104 through the score. Let's clear the air about hybrids with Kia. How do you explain the Bears offense? He rupting for 59 points on a day they didn't complete a past at Colston Loveland. Do you still think Ben Johnson was exaggerating and wanting to set the NFL record for points? I don't think he was exaggerating at all. I think he wanted to set that as a standard in the goal. When he told the athletic in the off season during training camp that he wanted to preside over the highest scoring offense in NFL history and he referenced the Broncos and he looked at the history they made and what his team was capable of that was not accidental. Ben Johnson doesn't do anything without intention and we saw the results of that yesterday. As we talked about early, rarely do the results match or exceed the hype, especially Chicago. We will build people up and teams up and we will talk about them and then often to often

what we see is now what we expected and what we had hoped for. That was not the case yesterday. You could point to a lot of factors. Boy it was 120 degrees on the field according to Fox and boy it was the Panthers and they're rebuilding their defense and they have a lot of holes in this and that. But I believe that the Bears are just going to be one of those offensive units this year that have an array of weaponry and ways to execute that you're not going to be able to shut off one thing. They did this without any contributions statistically from a guy we expect to be the leading, they're leading receiver this year. Colston Loveland had you ask anybody as we did talk about the biggest breakout of offensive player of 2026. He didn't catch a pass and it didn't matter in the squad 59 points anyway. Yes around the league we saw a week one record for point scored.

Yes there were 10 teams to score 30 more points but the Bears were at the top of the pack and that's exactly where Ben Johnson expects them to be and I think that maybe we should expect them to stay. We want to be the highest scoring we want to have the most wins. We want to win Super Balls. We want to like that's what we do. We didn't get into this profession to be media ochre or average Ben Johnson after the game about you know reflecting on scoring all those points and why he went forward on fourth and two. We didn't get into this profession to be media ochre or average. There's another t-shirt in my opinion. That's from Ben T-shirt. That's the next act. We did not get into this profession trying to be media ochre or average and everybody should take that approach as we start a new work week. Don't be media ochre don't be average as we start a new work week together right. I mean that is a great way to think about it and Colston Loveland not having a reception and putting up that kind of offense is pretty amazing. Now I think somebody might have said if you're the panthers

what do you do you take Colston Loveland out of the game and you make everybody else try and beat you but it was the run game it was the right side of that line that ground and pound. So 59 points. Listen it and think about the fourth down that they didn't convert you know think about penalties that negated things. Think about if they don't you know would they have scored on the very first possession of the game had they not put the ball on the ground and turned it over. They could have they could have put up 60 if they had really wanted sloppy. There's things to clean up. Sloppy early. There's things to clean up. Early on it was sloppy all the way around for for both offense and defense. Dustin you done I'm sorry. All done. Okay. I feel your vibe. I'm feeling like this work week is starting out on a good note. I appreciate you for getting me hyped up. Dustin's telling us to like to get our act together. He was like you guys are slacking. Let's go. Let's go. I'm going to say I was surprised yesterday because I was one that came into

you know the offseason going into the summer and high expectations for Colson Loveland. I know that's going to happen. He's going to still have a big time year but I think this speaks more to what Ben Johnson off his offense is all about. It's about doesn't need to be one guy and we heard Caleb Williams talk about that last week of saying that he wants to be able to hit the guy who's open just make sure if you get open I'm going to get you the ball and I think that's what's so special about this is that that could have been the game plan for the Panthers. We're going to take away Loveland and we're going to figure you guys figure out another way to beat us. That's not going to be every single week. That's going to change and at some point you're going to take away somebody else that's hot. Maybe now a guy like Khalif Raymond gets a little more eyes on him and you got to figure out well he's he's killing us here in a slot which is going to open up for Colston Loveland. So I'm proud of them for being able to show it's not just about one person on on the offense. When I look at this this offense though they got a lot of playmakers and it starts

with the run game and shouts out to Kyle Menungai, Deandre Swift kind of set in the tone on the ground and giving this Bears team an opportunity to make some history and when Ben Johnson's talking about chasing that Bronco squad from 2013 he wasn't lying. Yesterday was a was a mission statement like this is what we're all about. Now they got to be able to keep it up especially with the defense that we see that has a lot of holes and question marks. Amen. I don't even know if I need to answer the question. I'm pretty sure you just hit it right there. All right. What concerns you most about the Bears defense? They gave up 37 points to a Panthers offense led by Bryce Young. Bryce Young were there any bright spots amid all the yards and the TDs being given up? Yeah there were some bright spots. I wanted to kind of get to I know I know it's doom and gloom. When you were looking at giving up 37 to Bryce Young but we all knew coming into this game that he got better as the season went on last year and that he was going to approve and make adjustments

going into this year. What I saw was a defense still trying to find ways to get after the quarterback. They don't have consistent pass rush and when you give quarterbacks time in the NFL they will dice you up. I don't care who it is but if you give them time they will dice you up and a pass rush definitely helps out those guys on the back end those guys on the outside as well that are covering these wide receivers. They had listen the Panthers got some ballers too on offense that you got to be able to you knew you're going to have to slow down but Dylan Thaneman bright spot got the game ball after the game yesterday. Give him a lot of credit because there was a lot of talk about was he ready and all this other stuff. Listen he's a rookie it's going to take time. He is not coming out and he's not a finished product at all. He is only only going to get better and so to see what he was able to do yesterday to me was was huge. Malik Muhammad another bright spot. I give him credit so we were talking about two rookies that that made place that intercept. He was he would have to start

because they were woods didn't play. Yeah they were woods I mean it's it's these are these are huge things and I think over time as you get these these young guys into the game more lathered up a little bit and and getting accustomed to the game it gives them more confidence moving forward and hopefully that helps your defense down the line. 353 passing yards allowed now I know that the Panthers had to throw the ball to make the comeback right but it was 31 31 and third quarter so I mean it was a it was a video game. We were watching we were watching Madden you know with Caleb Williams leading the way the cover boy leading leading the way the pass rushes is not really there I did you know I love the Montess wet sack that was great. We talked about that you know the quarterback for the Panthers they picked up the fifth year option but he's playing for his NFL future well that that looked pretty darn good yeah that's a pretty good resume builder right there. That was a pretty good resume builder right there. Four for nine on third down you got to you know fifth almost 50 you

can't allow 50% on third down expect to win a lot of game. Well what was the Montess wet celebration over the face yeah what's that I don't know what that means I don't either maybe it was because it's how it was strictly that may so no he's done it before okay so I didn't have enough sacks to you know it. I don't know it. I don't know it. I don't know it's a great man. Brandon Brandon you left it. Brandon left it pretty hard back there Montess wet had a sack that was a pretty nice sack it was a nice sack I sat down but I think I don't know his I don't know his his post sack routines because they don't have enough of them to stick out. If the Bears wanted to go into the season and believe that they needed to coach up the defense I think the only bright spot coming out yesterday is at Denys Allen will have a captive audience because this is a group that needs coached up. This is a group that needs some help. I don't know how they get it. I don't know how getting healthy is going to help it necessarily. When you saw Xavier Woods working out before the game

reports that he was working on a front of Ryan Poles and then we found him on the inactive list. It thrust Malik Muhammad into the spotlight and I think he handled himself pretty well. The rookie played the nickel corners role. He was he was physical. He had a great interception. He got beat a couple times but who didn't in that secondary. Jalen Johnson had some weak moments and some good ones. It was up it was down Tyrick Stevenson had a forgettable day. Yeah. But that's part of being on a defense where you really look at that defense position by position. It's hard to find a spot where they are better than they were a year ago. So what does that mean? That means you have to have some really meaningful growth from three rookies who they're they're depending on. Theonamon, Muhammad, Vanburg in the rotation. Contavius Street had a sack. That was nice. You saw Lynch making some plays but they gave up 37 points. They were beatable on third downs. They were not anywhere near acceptable. So this Bears team has bold big ambition after week one because of

its offense. It's defense right now is an anchor weighing them down. So you have to fix that. And I think Dennis Allen is committed to doing that. Ben Johnson realizes that but it was hard to find a bright spot in the Bears defense yesterday. I understand the question. Moving over to the Cubs and White Sox for a moment here. The Cubs feel good about winning two or three from the Pirates as they sit here tied with the Phillies for that number one wild card spot. What was the biggest reason for confidence or doubt in this team? Sweet would have been nice. Absolutely. I don't know that you can expect to do that unless it's the last weekend of the season and it's due or die. The Cubs aren't in that position. They aren't in a bad position. They're in a position of heading into the stretch run and eyeing the playoffs with what is the most productive offense in Major League Baseball one through nine in the batting order. You look at what they're capable of doing and getting hot. We've said it before and we'll repeat

it again but they can get on a roll if Breggman gets hot and PCA maintains and all these things that happen to long deep dangerous lineup. The best thing that happened over the weekend was that Jacob Webb got out of his own way and he was back and he pitched in a high leverage situation and came through. It would have been nice to get the sweep on Sunday but the bullpen mini resurgence was something that they can build on. I don't know where Justin Steele is. He's in town through a bullpen yesterday that'll be curious to see the results of that and reports on that. You don't know if Edward Cabrera is going to be able to come out of the bullpen the way he did. Maybe that was a nice little cameo debut but the bullpen has to come through. The braves are going to be difficult because they are the braves but the good news is the Cubs as they sit here tied with the fillies for the number one in the wildcard spot. Own the tie breaker over the fillies as well as the Padres and the Diamondbacks. So they need to hold serve and it begins tonight at Riggly.

Yeah I mean being able to win the game the way they did on Saturday against Paul Schienes. You had a bases loaded walk to tie the game and then a batter hit by a pitch right to have your the go ahead score. They stole that one. And then Zeffer John comes in in the ninth and locks it down. So that was and then you know to the same point they kind of they stole Saturday and then they kind of gave away Sunday if you want to look at it that way. But when you win Siri if you continue to win series at home and the pirates came in red hot. Now we're talking about the socks in a second but they went they were in town and they were scoring a bunch of runs. Pirates were and they didn't score a bunch of runs in in this series overall. So it was a good weekend but the break you know listen the braves are in town that they're coming to town. That is a playoff caliber team without a shadow of a doubt and they have a five game lead over the fillies. So they're not ready to just let the foot off the gas and let you go ahead and beat them. That's

not that's not how it's going to work. So you better be ready you better be ready to go. This is this is far this is far from over and it's a big start I think for David Peterson tonight. That's a big it's a big start for him and we'll see we'll see how it goes. Confidence in the bullpen not not super high David not super high. You see who started for the braves? Tonight. Right now the low pass. Yeah back in low P back in Chicago low P. It would have been nice to be able to get a sweep but I'm with Dustin you find a way to keep winning series you old you have to own this right now for the Norseiders own it I think the confidence for me comes with what David was talking about. It's the lineup they got a lot of pop this lineup can get hot at any time when they need to it just needs to be right now it has to be with Atlanta this series is going to be huge and can you find a way to be able to manufacture runs and can you get hot in the middle of that order.

I also think about pitching in that bullpen down the stretch here this is going to this right here you should not feel comfortable but you have you still have an opportunity it's in your hands you have to take advantage of that opportunity and to be that's winning games you got to win series and so it's not going to be easy but I think what gives me the confidence is that this this lineup can get hot at any time that's another really good question I'm moving over to the white socks after losing another series to the Cardinals the socks head to Cleveland clinging to that half game lead over the Guardians what do you think happens in this series and is it the biggest series of the year and who needs to step up. It's the biggest series of the year for the South side as you better A but I asked somebody we've been talking about it and everybody else been texting in talking about even last week we knew it was going to get to this moment now I'm even knowing the outcome of what was going to happen over the weekend that this series against the Guardians was going to be huge and to me it could be some some real just messy baseball not a

lot of scoring is going to come down to can your starting rotation get past five eighties can your starters get past five if they can do that in that middle of the order also can start getting some hits and and driving it to runs then anything is possible but they have they they have it in their hands it is going to be a big one this weekend I mean this week starting off and trying to figure out David do you think you think guys like Mooney can get hot I don't know I don't don't want to because that that to me is one of the guys that definitely miss the up as they get into this Cleveland series yeah have my doubts it's Mooney more a comedy by a mile yes struck out nine times in his last five games he's just over 200 he's hitting 206 right now he's one of the worst hitters in baseball since August 1st so I don't know if it's become like too many games

it maybe they don't play they didn't play as many games when he was overseas were he played over a thousand games as a professional not a rookie by the way um nine case in his last five I think the white socks win one and so that if my master right if they win if they win one it's still be at a half game right they leave Cleveland with the half game lead um this is going to go right down to the stretch right down to the stretch they've got some of their quote unquote better starters going in this series from a starting standpoint um but if they want to win this series when it's a comedy is a wake up let's understand where they are and why they're here they would be in second place if not for what happened Saturday night two outs two strikes Randall Gritchick's on the at the plate they're down five to four here's what happened after that the pitch to Gritchick fly ball into right back goes Scott to the wall it's gone Gritchick got it a two run shot

and the white socks have believed Gritchick got it kind of ignite on it nice job CHSN that was the biggest home run of the season because it avoided a sweep as it turned out but the the socks need every bit of help they can get and that was dramatic it was timely and it was referred to on white socks dot com Scott Merkin the Gritch who saves Christmas maybe I love that though I love Merck but they have to they have to have a sense of urgency that I think they feel maybe if they feel too much this is not a team that is experienced at winning or pennant races and it's obvious they if Hagen Smith could pitch every night that'd be great he can't but the stakes cannot be higher they need to come out of here with two out of three my fear is that they lose tonight and they'll let go of the rope you don't want to see that happen starting pitching's out of gas your offense needs a boost from Mune I think Colson Montgomery unfortunate error you don't know if they are

pressing you sense that they are they've had a bad weekend they lose two out of three to the Cardinals Mike Shirley the director of scouting resigned Saturday night and there's a disturbing story in the New York Times about harassment accusations that led to this in an investigation internally that created this vacancy Mike Shirley was at the forefront of a lot of these draft picks that have put the socks in the position they're in it's a critical week on the south side socks need to take care of business in Cleveland so they can continue this hope that they can get to the playoffs and maybe even still hold on to that by which comes with the number two overall seating all right that's the white socks we're going to keep it back to football because the bears opened with a bang Sunday in Charlotte who on the offense maybe surprised you and was there a defensive player that stood out the picks X continues it's on page the Colson sports radio 104 3 the score it's David offer draft kings the weight is over football is here so was draft

Khalif Raymond is the guy who I think emerged as a dependable safety valve more than just a return guy remember a year ago though a lot of days a kiss we thought okay early on boys got a good chemistry with Caleb Williams oh boy he's he's he's coming through in third downs oh boy I think that's a similar reaction to Khalif Raymond with maybe a little bit more certainty Khalif Raymond has a history in Ben Johnson's offense so you think that will help him continue to find those holes and be trusted by Caleb Williams so you could say with nine targets four more than the next most targeted receiver Luther Burton had five Khalif Raymond had nine that would be somebody who emerged the other one would be a receiver jade walker being involved as many snaps as he was and also making his presence felt I'm glad he got a touchdown pass but I think the block was the big moment for him and that was something that

yeah that's what he does and that's why he's there and his special teams prowess speaks for itself so that would be offensively defense what defense player performance surprised me I think welcome back to pick six with high and pain on 104 three the score you know David's a good question what offensive player gave the bearers more than you expected and what defensive players performance surprised you I'll start with the offense as the question asked maybe I shouldn't have been surprised maybe it was just reaffirming to see Khalif Raymond is that guy Khalif Raymond is the guy who I think emerged as a dependable safety valve more than just a return guy remember a year ago though a lot of days a kiss we thought okay early on boy he's got to get chemistry with Caleb Williams oh boy he's he's coming through in third downs oh boy I think that's a similar reaction to Khalif Raymond with maybe a little bit more certainty Khalif Raymond has a history in Ben

Johnson's offense so you think that will help him continue to find those holes and be trusted by Caleb Williams so you could say with nine targets four more than the next most targeted receiver Luther Burton had five Khalif Raymond had nine that would be somebody who emerged the other one would be a receiver jade walker being involved as many snaps as he was and also making his presence felt I'm glad he got a touchdown pass but I think the block was the big moment for him and that was something that that's what he does and that's why he's there and his special teams prowess speaks for itself so that would be offensively defense what defensive player performance surprised me I think that it's hard to find a bright spot on a team it gives up 37 points but I was pleasantly surprised that Montess wet had a sack and that regardless of how

he may look on tape when the final analysis and all the things that we'll find out later from profile focus after they grade the tape and tell us how good or bad each player played Montess wet has one game started and one sack so that's a good start that's a good point David that is a good that is a good start I know we had a little bit of fun not knowing exactly what his sack celebration was because not having no enough of them it was the bane is that like a pro wrestling thing yeah I think it's either that or or no face maybe one of the textures knows from the other I've been seeing I've been seeing that okay on the text line yeah thank you for that well stay so he started defense let's stay defense they went after the amendment in the beginning of that game they they tested they they tested the rookie and he responded well it it looked like oh boy this is a little faster than the preseason was oh boy this is a lot faster than it was in Oregon and in West Lafayette oh boy like it was it was it was

a lot faster so he he seemed to rebound well so I was happy for him about that on offense I have to go with Khalif Raymond as well it was like who he's a 10 year guy the other guy and I'm very curious to talk to all encroots about this very curious to see how he grades out pf but overall I thought for the first Garrett Bradbury started a little bit slow but as that game went on thought he did an overall pretty nice job and there was a lot of eyes on him so I like Garrett Bradbury was pretty good from what I saw it only got to watch this game once because of Vikings Packers usually I'd watch it rewatch it right away again so that'll be my Tuesday afternoon all right you guys since you went with Khalif Raymond which is I love it I love the fact that you have a guy that's a vet that comes in Caleb feels comfortable with but I'm gonna flip it since you guys both went that direction I'm gonna go with Kalmanunga only only reason why I'm not surprised by the speed David

I was I know you were I wasn't that man gets downhill fast it runs with a passion and violence which I love but it was the fact that I I thought he would get burned but I didn't know he was gonna get over a hundred yards I know he hit the hundred yard mark and then I know he would get a touchdown at some point if they're down by the goal line but this dude took one 61 to the crib and had some blocking by his wide receiver so I'm gonna give him credit for I knew what Swift was going to do because just got a got a contract and everybody's been talking about him and how locked in he's been but to see the ground game locked in on the other side with Monungay I give him a lot of credit on the defensive side of the ball I was surprised that Dylan Theaneman would end up with the game ball that's not that wasn't on my bingo card yesterday before the game and yes he was tested yes the game is fast like Dustin was talking about and it is it's going to get it's gonna take

some time for him to get used to but that young man he was tested yesterday and I love the fact that he battled let the team tackles love that from him has a young guy and a lot on his plate he's only gonna get better from it yeah I'm not talking necessarily about a pick six or something like that that is the voice of Brad Biggs Biggs time 9 a.m this morning with Haw and Jared Payton on another college football weekend full of newsworthy events what stood out to you the most you agree Texas should have jumped from fourth to one after beating the Ohio State yeah they deserve it I mean you were tripped what 23 three at one point and going into the fourth like that's crazy to come back and win shots out to archon and and that Texas team for for battling down and trying to figure out we're gonna we're gonna make this work we're gonna make this work against an Ohio State team that offensively is super gifted but don't couldn't finish it off so yes I think they

definitely deserve that my canes though we'll talk about that maybe at some point being disrespect but it doesn't matter they got dumped in there yeah that's all good though but I think also too with what watching what would be right behind that game because it was it was such a it was such a good game and it was you saw Texas start out so slow and then to finish strong and get the dub is huge I think Oregon losing the Oklahoma State was that was another big one that would tally right behind that that's another good game but college football isn't a good place right now I enjoyed all weekend on Saturday watching college football it's Oregon it's Oregon they were the preseason number two they got votes as a preseason number one they're not good in the front no they're not they're not they're not tough they're not tough enough they're big big boys but they don't put their hand in the dirt and getting a real three point stance it's more like I'm kind of like lazy I stand up and I move my it's like I get in the way that that that was it that's a terrible that's a terrible

terrible loss from working and we also have to we don't we have to after Friday show with Ruthie in here is a Michigan grad kind of have to shout out the Marines I need to give a pro Oklahoma was 10th Oklahoma was 10th in that game and that was an ugly it was an ugly game that was like that was an old school big 10 Justin at Oklahoma team ain't good man but they were 10th in the late that's my problem they can be ranked 10th but we were sitting there watching and I'm going this team should not be in the top 10 I don't think you'll see him anywhere near the top 20 moving forward but I do give Michigan credit though I you have to but man I mean they're out of there they're 24th in the AP and they're 21st in the coaches Oklahoma 10th 20th and 21st with the loss Oregon down to 21 and 18 well Oregon had no business losing to Oklahoma stay after Oklahoma state lost in the opener to Tulsa how does that happen Dan landing Dan landing very good at a press

conference need to spend more time reviewing film for his defense or getting offensive lineman that can't put their hand in the dirt they're soft that's that's exactly right and I picked them to get to the college football playoff in the preseason but now all bets are off it doesn't look like that's the case how do you predict college football anymore though because every team has at least 25 transfers it's all about free agency college free agency that's why Michigan to me what happened Saturday in an arbor was confirmation they got the right coach not a lot of coaches would have handled what happened against western Michigan in the way that Kyle Wittie hinted and I think when you look at that history of being in charge at Utah and that experience of gently calling out his quarterback publicly motivating him the way that he did and not letting those distractions consume his football team Kyle Wittie him kept Michigan on the right track able to

be an Oklahoma team that was overrated but it's still a big time program it is big time coming into your place and you took care of business Notre Dame Routed Rice archmanning arrived I think in a way Saturday night against Ohio State that the nation was waiting for yes he actually cracked a smile look at you saw him celebrating with KD Kevin Durant on the sideline he probably high five Matthew McConaughey he did a lot of things that young men in college that have archmannings kind of reach and should be doing I just want to know what the party was like after the game you know what the party was like I know what it was like Texas deserve that Ryan Day deserved that as well if you watch that game early on Texas kept turning the ball over making mistakes but they also were winning at the line of scrimmage and the receivers were getting open and the little things were showing that this game was not going to be over until Texas had a bigger say in it and it did I don't know how Ohio State lost that game except for they just were we're not executing and I just felt like

Texas took care of business at home the way they needed to what happened after the game that's created a lot of conversation what was what was start doing with how they wrote did you see that little so a little bit of background on that please so at half time they tried to talk to him and they ESPN truck or whatever had technical issues yeah lower it was like it was delayed it was I'm so I think that was just it was like you know you guys held me up and now hey sorry hey sorry you know why you just won a game come on the biggest game in college football your fan base loves this they want to hear from you the ESPN didn't do it on purpose come on man I'm just giving a reason why he might have done I know I think he was wrong I don't agree with Sark after dark I don't agree with Sark after dark because he's a notably nicknamed but yeah that was a big win for the mannings that was big win for for Texas that was a great win for Sark even so they deserved to be number one right now you got to stop and talk though after a big game like that I

wouldn't want to because you know how many recruits are watching that game it was a bad look for him and he deserved the eye roll the Hollywood gave him I think he deserved that more all right we come back it's time for the extra point and we will get back to the Bears because what happened on Sunday was historic house seismic was it did it change the way that you view this season and what your expectations are for the 2026 Chicago Bears will talk about it next it's Haun Peyton Chicago Sports Radio 104 3 the score in with the extra point painting it's time for the extra point with Haun Peyton come out for the extra point on 104 3 the score set at this extra point after winning the opener with a historic offensive performance of the Bears change your perception of them for the season were your expectations at all affected by the 59 point outburst now let's go back to our predictions I predict the Bears would win 10 games and they would play in the NFC championship game and had them winning the NFC

championship game so I don't think I'm changing my expectations as much as maybe feeling a little bit better about being over my skis a little bit this is a team with an offense that could be and Ben Johnson would say should be the best in the league and think about that for a second we're in Chicago and this is a franchise so proud of its defense that was the reason it won it's only Super Bowl and we haven't really we don't really know until recently what a franchise quarterback looks like because one's never taken a snap here and scoring a scoring outburst would qualify as getting into the 20s in most seasons so this is new territory uncharted ground and it looks like it's going to be the new normal around town Ben Johnson wasn't messing around or exaggerating when he said he wanted to make history by being the best offensive NFL history and I I giggle when I say

that because it seems ridiculous but 59 points is quite a statement quite an opening statement but I don't think you have to adjust if you were thinking high and big before you don't have to limit yourself now if you were expecting little before and now you want to cling to the defensive shortcomings and say I'm gonna be right they're gonna be bad you might be right but you might be wrong the Bears everything is still on the table after yesterday and it seems even a little closer if you look very closely right everything is still on the table David it's a great way to say that they've got to be able to limit the turnovers because right now you have to say that the defense is suspect I didn't think much of the Panthers offense going in but but maybe I was wrong about that maybe the Panthers are going to be the class of their division perhaps maybe but you know look what the Saints did yesterday and I think the Saints were gonna be worth a darn this year they play in the same division so we'll have to wait and see but you know

and to score that many points and basically doing it on the ground I mean of course that we're passing plays and Caleb threw for over 200 y'all but you know when you see 50 if you said the Bears we're gonna score 59 points you would have expected I was I would I don't want to put words in your mouth I would have expected that Caleb Williams went for about oh three and a quarter and four touchdown passes and that Lovland was definitely on the receiving end of one of them he didn't even have a damn catch so it's the way they scored 59 despite the penalties despite the turnover early they left some points on the field as well there was there was there was more opportunity for them to even have a bigger a bigger day and and that's what jumped out to me was after the game and listening to Ben Johnson and Caleb talk about well we still feel like we can be better this doesn't rewrite anything that I was thinking about the season and how the season's

going to go it just reaffirmed that like this offense can play with anyone and they can score on anyone at any time but that's gonna have to be the case when you look at the other side of the football this defense is going to give up points so they're going to have to score but I think I think we all kind of knew that we were just trying to wait to see how this first game was going to go and it just showed us Ben Johnson's not messing around he wants to be the highest scoring offense ever in the NFL I get it it showed that this is this this was a statement yesterday of we're here this is what we're going to do and it's not always going to be like this but it does give me a good feeling that they're on the right track early on the season and they found a way to be able to get a dumbbell with Dustin said I would have thought that you really that he would have threw for 3 30 had a bunch of passing touchdowns they did their damage

on the ground we're relatively modest yes for an offense at scored 59 points yes the ground game was it was was the bread and run love about the bear offense so as much as Ben Johnson receives praise and compliments for how innovative and how aggressive and and how the trick plays in the Wizardry he's an old school football coach thank you thank you run the ball run the ball and then run it some more when you got two backs over a hundred and your quarterback runs for 65 on a designed run how about maybe we can stay away from those you want to nitpick no more design runs for Caleb not after he's maybe run the ball that much but think about what you said to Jared they left points on the field yes they scored 59 points and you say they left points on the field and that I know what you mean early on it was like well Luther Burton turn over oh boy here we go that's going to be bad but they made that defense look like the coastal Carolina Panthers defense

that was like what happens when you're Miami Hurricanes schedules again schedules a patty or a season family yes that's what it looked like a time but guess what better take you better take advantage of it better take advantage of it do what you need to do no we're just supposed to score that many points but now you're on everybody's radar and I think you were already coming into the season people who were focused on this bears on you took your shirt off as a rookie head coach you are already on everybody's radar I know I know started a trend how about Joe Brady taking a shirt off after Ben Johnson did last year Joe Brady taking a shirt off is that a thing now we don't want to ask coaches taking the shirts I don't like it I don't like it you better let's see if you would have shouted out Ben Johnson you got to give credit to the dude they started it and now they getting free food by the way I do want to say this I don't know if we talked about it to the Wiener Circle you know we talked about them before when Ben Johnson takes a short shirt off they actually has some new stuff going on they said one they'll give out free hot dogs if Kevin Warren

or George McCasky takes their shirt off after a win we don't need that and then I think they say something like Dennis Allen has to like do a dance or something like that I think I saw something that the Wiener Circle for free hot dogs so just Dennis Allen out there Dennis Allen dancing is something that probably would happen okay maybe so Kevin Warren or George taking off their shirt not gonna I want to feed the hungry as much as everybody but do we really need a shirtless Kevin Warren walk around the Bears locker room I mean I'll do it okay now we're talking for for hot dogs for the city yeah I know I'll definitely do it would you do a David no that's the Jared Peyton me pop by four arms oh wait man let's start that let's not go down that road we have someone crazy enough to offer it you can do it whenever you want JP that's good all right this is fun you're awesome now it's your turn out there 312 64 44 67 67 312 64 467 67 what did you think of what you

saw how far did your jaw drop when you saw them score 59 points what did you think about the fourth and one call at the 21 yard line and the quarterback sneak and then the defense I'm sure there'll be people want to weigh in on the defense we are here for you all morning long it's a hot Peyton show you're listening to a plumbers 911 football Monday presented by Beauty Bank and Great Clips line him up we're gonna talk to Olen Krueger when we come back then at 720 we're gonna talk to you the Bears fan about what you thought about yesterday eight o'clock is TJ Edwards nine o'clock is Brad Biggs don't go anywhere we're here all morning long the Bears are one and oh they're making history we're here to talk about it it's on Peyton Chicago sports radio 104 3 the score compact capable surprisingly roomy always forward with Kia my apartment garage in Los Feliz was clearly designed by someone who never had to open a car door that's where my Kia Salto's just fits with room for work bags yoga mats groceries and whatever I accidentally buy at the Rose Bowl flea market
