Turns out, the company running the place, Waste Management, took down a section of the Wildlife Fence back in May for some construction project. They were supposed to have it all done by September 1st, but that didn't happen. This allowed bears to get pretty comfortable rummaging through the trash. Mid officials have been dealing with waste management to get this sorted. They seem a lot more bears hanging around the dump than usual. It's also worth noting that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game had to put down four bears this year because they were getting into trash and nearby. Neighborhoods While they can't say for sure it's directly linked to the open landfill, it's a pretty strong possibility when bears have easy access to food. Now, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation did give waste management permission to remove about 100 yards of fence for the expansion.

1:00But the project's time mine got pushed back. The latest word is, they might not finish until the end of October, though it's not official yet. The good news is, after a recent inspection, Waste Management put up a temporary electric fence and some game cameras. Officials didn't spot any bears inside during that inspection. They also need to fix up another part of the fence that has trees growing through it, making it easy for bears to climb over.
