This fun Steve Ben, obviously we've been working off season together and obviously David Peterson played with him this year is good to see him. There's a lot of guys I've seen around and heard and know through friends. They're just kind of me the guys and they see what the vibes are here so it's been great so far. That's Clay Holmes right when he got here the fine picture for the Chicago Cubs is talking about among other people Ben Brown who he had been a tremendous mentee for or mentor for I should say Clay Holmes in the off season Ben Brown sought him out and they worked out together learned some pitching stuff specifically but also workout stuff and life stuff the very close have seen them interacting and laughing and talking in the Cubs clubhouse since Clay Holmes has gotten here the Ben Brown story took a very sad turn on the 26th of August when it was announced he had suffered a setback he had pitched a couple innings and a
rehab started it had gone well but then the pain in the neck returned and they kind of threw up their hands and said we don't have a timeline right now well today they got an official timeline he's out for the season is Ben Brown here's the manager Craig council before Cubs and Brewers announcing to the media that Ben Brown is out for the year Ben is going to be out for the remainder of the season and really just after consulting with with doctors it's just more rest it's nothing you just got to rest more you know this is a this is a bone injury and you know this is it's just been a it's there's healing but just not enough to allow the discomfort to go away and so we just need to heal we just need to spend more time healing yeah I mean I think the frustrating thing for Ben is just this is the multiple times where this was knocked him out for a long period of time and you know that that obviously is what
with this is the most frustrating part so you know I think and this is and the answers are rest which is which is a good answer but sometimes a frustrating answer because it involves athletes want to do something to fix things right and and there's there's just not much to do but in the case of bones you just you need to let them rest and they at some some bones can just heal slower and then yet you have to sit with that and it's frustrating for sure and then so you feel for Ben from that perspective this is a more imaging yeah yeah and so it's it's the imaging you know that's with bone it's it's healing but there's you can still see signs of an injury and so that you know the original thing was we're gonna go when we're gonna rest for a bit and then we're gonna go when we're not recreating symptoms it worked until you know what I mean
yeah yeah that's your level and you're doing really part of it and giving that it has some function right it's just no I don't know I think you know these guys throw hard because their body moves a certain way you can't invent another way to do that wow that's Craig counsel trying to wrap his head around Ben Brown's injury and explain it as best he can and it is incredibly frustrating to Ben and I can tell you it is very frustrating for the cubs as well because this is the same kind of injury that shut him down in 24 and he missed almost all of that season and then here he is in 26 shut down in June and he gets a chance to go back and go and they think he's structurally okay but it's discomfort dude's in a lot of pain it just freaking hurts do some people pitch
through that discomfort and pain yes because it's not oh my tendons oh you see you can see they're afraid oh it's not my muscle oh it's not this it's bone pain but for Benny cannot pitch through it he can't it's it's just too uncomfortable and so you've lost him and the team is frustrated and Ben is extremely frustrated you hear it you hear it and you feel bad not only for Ben Brown but the cubs Craig counsel is staff this is an individual that was you know when you're I think the reason why Ben Brown hurts so much speaks is because you can't help but go back and look at the season and the arms that you've lost and so Ben Brown isn't just Ben Brown in a vacuum it's Ben Brown and Kate Horton it's Ben Brown and Justin Steele it's Ben Brown and fill in the blank and so Ben Brown is part of the group of arms that you we're holding out hope for right just like you're like okay Steele supposed to be back at the all star break he's not but is there a chance
maybe I don't know Ben Brown all right he had the neck issue he's having a rehab start can he come back and be a guy that can get it inning for you in the playoffs no gone to you know there's a lot there I think you said a lot of very apt things Gabe I think it feels like one of a massive batch of pitching injuries but think about the guys that you related it to Justin Steele Tommy John surgery Kate Horton Tommy John surgery Ben Brown weird bone thing we can't figure out fair it seemed like it seemed like a little bit more survivable rest he even said it in there just rest you'll feel better not happening rest and then he did feel better then he threw and then it hurt again okay well can you pitch no you can't damn it damn it they were counting on them absolutely and and Kate I wish I could remember when Craig said it it was in one of our appearances maybe like a month ago or six weeks ago maybe it was right after the deadline I think it was right after the
deadline and we had asked him like boy you might have an embarrassment of riches you might have all these guys back remember that conversation like all you'll have everything you need for a playoff series and he tried to poo poo but he also said do we expect to have Ben Brown back in October yes like they they expected to have him as a weapon and what a malleable weapon he would be right now and now they're not going to have it well you look at big hit big hit big hit you look at the the blowup of you know Tim Thornton yesterday in the dugout and those that's an inning where maybe you might have a Ben Brown there right you you that's what you're really ultimately thinking if you're Craig Columso and the adjustments you have to make in real time as a result yeah I mean that that middle relief whether it's Trent Thornton or Caleb Ferguson right now it's a little bit of Colin Ray it's not Javier Assad and it needs to be Javier Assad I think they're late to put Javier Assad back on the active roster in my opinion anyway I think I think Craig was just felt
burned by so many arms right whether whether it was wicks whether it was Assad there were just guys that you put in certain situations that you felt you couldn't depend on them or rely on them I don't know what the issue for them with Assad is I think it's like the way his stuff plays according to you know the models and and the charts and graphs and the idea of the swing and miss like maybe there's not enough swing and miss there that dude gets out he's a freaking bulldog he gets bad contact and maybe that's hard to believe in in like a high leverage relief situation I assume that has to be the reason why that that they want so little more swing and miss a little more velocity Javier Assad gets out man he should be the last three times Trent Thornton's been out there I'm like where's Javier Assad well I think I'm sure they're thinking about high leverage situations where individuals are on base and you can't afford the actual contact right and so you although Javier Assad who I I think is great at the I'll let just think back to the world baseball classic
how well he pitched for team Mexico how well you pitched when he first got back to Chicago when you're doing that those were great moments but I think I mean speaks we know what it is you're trying to find those margins where you're better and where you can have a hodgepodge of individuals pitching for you and can kind of give you the same result you're seeking out the one that can be different and for whatever reason Kurt Consul is obviously putting Javier Assad in the bulk group of individuals that are going to give them the same and I think that's what you're seeing it's unfortunate Hodgepodge thank you for that got you yeah um you're making me wonder where the phrase comes from don't don't don't but I like words I like knowing where stuff came from if only there was a website that I could go to that would tell me people will no longer be googling in six years I don't want to be very clear what will they be doing come on you can't be serious what AI yeah yeah no one will be googling anymore so but so what are they going to call it search it up
no just like there was no chat GPC it for googling yeah now you know we have to ever for you they will create one so just be saying it into the ether I mean I know we already are hey Siri what is blank me or whatever or Alexa what does blank mean you know but what I don't understand what you're saying so what will be the verb that we use I search I'll say it again the same way we didn't know Google will be googling I don't know what the word is going to be it's going to it's going to come out of nothing some GPT 12 year to 12 year old kid will come up with it but yeah hey come you come on speed yeah do you use it do you say I of course yeah you have successful things I've been I've been I've been using chaggbc for three years now really yeah so I I've you know early adaptor just now where you get your takes where do you get your ports takes no now chaggbc is necessarily a great sports fan so I don't know if it has that but I'll tell you what I do are there I'll tell you when I do quickly I tell you to quickly please please yes I coach a soccer team I four year old kid yeah and so I go to chaggbc because it's connected to my gmail brilliant and then
