Berrios' Injury: Jays Have Rotation Depth

The Toronto Blue Jays face an early setback with starting pitcher Jose Barrios sidelined

by a stress fracture in his right elbow.

The two-time all-star got the diagnosis on Wednesday and won't be ready for opening

day.

He was pulled from a spring training start last week due to elbow inflammation but has

no current symptoms.

Doctors plan for him to rest a few days, then resume throwing.

Barrios, a 31-year-old right-hander, has been a workhorse since his 2016 debut with

the Minnesota Twins.

He locked 30 or more starts in seven of the last 10 years and posted a 4.17 ERA with

138 strikeouts over one.

166 innings last season.

Manager John Schneider has options to fill the gap, including Max Sherzer, Eric Lauer,

Trey Yessivich and Cody Ponce.

The team boasts a surplus of capable starters ready to step up.

This injury shakes off the rotation but leaves room for optimism as Barrios eyes a quick

return while the Jays gear up for the season ahead.
