1:01With that being said, I wanted to get that announcement out of the way and let's break this down. They started going to Managing Madrid. Look wonderful. Lots of people create jobs here. Good reading about that. My name is David. That's my name is the rest of numbers. I've ended up almost looking like a six three once. I'm very good wanting about that only managing Madrid website. Great podcast as well. It was a very bad day was a huge part of the equation. All right, guys, welcome to the Managing Madrid podcast. I'm going to try to make sense of what just happened today because I thought it was one of the most bizarre, especially second half. I'd seen it in a long time. I didn't really know what was going on in the last 10, 15 minutes. I was dumbfounded about some of the things that were happening.

2:02And then on top of all that, in Bapet, misdependulty and then it was reviewed and then we thought for half a second, he'll get a second chance at it. We had this incredible Carlos S.B. goal, which was disallowed and it was devastating and it broke our hearts because we were also happy for not only ourselves and the team, but for him because he's been coming in on a mission every single second. He's been on the field. He comes in and he does something. He's basically averaging a goal per minute at this point. And he really scored a header off a corner shortly after his disallowed goal. Real Batis wins. This is to me the story of the game. And look, there are a lot of things to break down, but the story of the game essentially was this. Real Madrid created an XG of over two in the first half. They had a good first half, an incredible Art of Goulare performance, an incredible Dean House in performance, belling him, had a really, really strong first half. Goulare had seven key passes.

3:03We missed three big chances and Vinnie and Bapet were terrible in front of goal. And what happened was Real Batis rode that wave. They went into half time without considering a goal. Then they could lock up their defense. Then they scored from a set piece. And then they just doubled down on their defense and don't open it up at all. What should have happened in this game was that we should not have wasted that incredible Art of Goulare performance. We should have given Arda and Jude at least one assist each. And we should have gone into half time at least one no-up. We didn't do that. We wasted our chances. You fast-forward the 90 minutes, the second half. The team continues. Our second halves have been regression from our first halves. And then you have this situation where we can't put the ball on the back of the net. Real Batis score. They doubled down their defense. And then in Bapet, Mr. Pantal, the cherry on top. SP has a great goal. This allowed cherry on top.

4:05And then just a very, very bizarre end to the game. And here we are. So listen, Modenio said last week that at some point, think bad things would happen. And we'd have to react accordingly. I didn't think it would come this soon. But we haven't actually beaten Real Batis away in about six years. I'm not mistaken. And I'm going to be refreshing the managing Madrid Twitter account during this podcast just to see what quotes are tweeted out. Because they cover the quotes after each game. This is one that I think this is going to be the first one where we can kind of see Modenio probably losing his shit. But what a shame. Truly what a shame. Let's start from the top. I have a lot to go through. So you're going to have to bear with me as I'm going to go through all this. OK, guys, I'll be here for probably longer than usual in a solo podcast. I want to start with last week. I actually watched the Levante versus Real Batis game.

5:07And one of the things that I had noted from that game, because everyone was looking at that game like so confused, how did Real Batis lose five to the Levante and when they must be really bad. And they were really bad defensively. And I think one of the most interesting thing about that game was that they actually had a lot of neat touches offensively between Eastco and Anthony and Ricardo Ricalme who came in off the bench today. Didn't start against Real Madrid today. But their defense was just so bad. Me personally, I was looking my lips at that aspect of it that if they have to open up their defense, Betis are really poor. And they have two fullbacks. We didn't. We should have taken full advantage of Bayerin on the right. Vinnie had a terrible game again. And then Fran Garcia on the left, who obviously we are familiar with. Dumfries, I don't think was able to punish Fran Garcia. I don't think Dumfries had a good game either,

6:07apart from making overloads and creating space. But like on the ball, he was clumsy. And then of course, Ardo Guller is playing more narrow and he's not really going at Fran Garcia. So Betis also did a really good job of making sure Bayerin and Fran Garcia don't get isolated, one B1. And they sent a lot of help defense on both flanks and they plug the flanks. But where we messed up again to go back to it, that's going to be the theme of the podcast. We didn't take our chances. And then all of a sudden, we didn't get to experience this terrible Real Betis defense because Real Betis were almost going to be more careful against us. And on top of that, because we didn't take our chances, and then we wanted to halftime it, no, no, and then we considered a set piece in the second half. We really, really didn't get a chance to exploit Real Betis having to chase the game. Because if Real Betis had to chase the game, they're going to open up on their defensive support. But we never gave them that opportunity because our finishing was so bad in this game. Like, first half was solid. I mean, look, you look at this game, Eastgo, terrific player.

7:10How many touches did he have in this game at halftime? I mean, I honestly, let me see, because I didn't really notice much. He had 32 touches, I believe, at halftime. And it's like, we didn't get much from, we controlled most of the run-up play. What a waste of an article, their game. You guys may have seen that episode I did with Faisal and Neil on Faisal's channel. We did a LaLiga predictions piece. And one of the things, one of the questions was, who will lead the league in assists? And I said La Minimale, but the only reason I didn't say article there was because I wasn't entirely 100% sure if Maurinho sees Gullere as a weekend week out starter,

8:10given that the 10 is built around Jude Bellingham. If I had a guarantee that article there would start out a game, I would say article will lead the league in assists. The only thing that would stop him from not leading the league in assists would be finishing like today, where he has seven key passes and not a single assist to show for, because his teammates cannot finish their chances. He is special, man. I think him in La Minimale are the two best and most prolific creators in the league. And it's not close. No other players in this league can generate chances out of thin air at such a high rate than those two. Article learn La Minimale. And there's part of me that wishes like, man, I wish we could get Carlos S.B. in sooner. The tricky thing with Carlos S.B. is that we can all see that he is a guy that comes in

9:10and just generates so much chaos. He's so hard to defend. He's a physical specimen. He's so clever with his off-ball movement. And he's just so good at latching onto the end of great goal-scoring positions. But we all see the struggle. The elephant in the room is that Mordinho can't take Venetius off or Mbappe off. And I think if you go through like the Vinnie experiences season, for example, the first game Mordinho didn't sub Venetius off after his really poor performance against Espanyol. The second game I'd like Mordinho's management in that he didn't take Venetius off until he got the goal in the sys. Which again, I think it's intelligent and wise thing to do because Mordinho knows that Realme did just sign Benicius for an extra six years. And if he's going to be your starting left-winger, you have to pump him with as much confidence as possible. Then I thought he was good against Malaga, the third game. And today, I mean, one of the themes with Vinnie, and this goes back to preseason where he looked

10:15really out of shape to start, he wasn't beating just, he wasn't able to beat like mediocre wingbacks. And today Hector Bayer in 2026 was picking his pocket. And just some of his, he just doesn't look physically right. And I don't, I don't know what it is because I physically he doesn't look right to me, but also his confidence is low. And the argument has always been with him, well, you keep him on, this is not my argument, this has been the argument that I've seen presented, is that well, you keep him on because you never moment a brilliance. And to be fair, yeah, I think that's true. I mean, was we weren't far away from that because he did have the Trebella assist to SB, which led to the disallowed goal. So it was almost there. But I do think one of the elephants in the room is clearly that we have a profile like SB on the bench. And to make room for him, we have to suboff like a fedeval verde or or artagulair who are not going to really complain or if they do, it's like not as dramatic

11:19is if you had to suboff any or a bapay. So I think that's an issue. That wasn't our main issue today to be clear, but it's an issue. But this, this entire conversation started because artagulair had yet another masterclass, him and Jude Bellingham have been our best players this season. And I think I'm bapay apart from this game and the espanyol game, you know, those two games in the middle, he was quite good. But we need better finishing. It's, it's crazy. Like we have a, we have all this firepower on paper. And yet the margin of error is way too low for the amount of firepower we have. That a team can just have one chance in one goal. That's all they need against us. Meanwhile, we need to have like 20 chances. Again, we generated over two XG in the first half alone over two XG. That's an insane amount of creation. Our problem was not creation. Our problem is not creating chances. We have incredible creative ability. But the fact that we just can't put these balls in the back of that consistently

12:22is concerning, especially with the amount of firepower we have on paper. So again, you hope this was an outlier. And again, it's too soon to judge it the way it's September 4th. But that second half was concerning for different reasons. That first half was concerning because we didn't capitalize. What I thought was this really strong, strong half. It was strong from Art of Guler. It was strong from Jude Bellingham and it was strong from Dean House. And I thought those guys were really standouts. And we'll circle back to those guys in a second. But Art of Guler, he had seven key passes at half time. And the, what people always say with people like him who have seven key passes, the point to like they did this with Cruz to the point to set pieces like, Oh, yeah, well, he takes corners and set pieces like, Well, yeah, then please tell me the long list of players who take corners and set pieces that can have that many key passes in the game. It's a testament to how well he hits those set pieces. Like he connected with Bellingham's head again twice in the first half alone on those set pieces. The other conversation that that kind of ties into Art of Guler in Internet of

13:26itself is, is Denzel Dumfries. Because Maurinho by all accounts based on what we've seen so far is that he doesn't want to pair Trent and Art of Guler on the wing together. And so it has to be either Trent and Dumfries or, or sorry, Art of Dumfries or either Brahim or probably in the future Dio Monde and Trent. And the reason for that is pretty clear because there's an element of the defense on it, although I think Art is an underrated defender. But the other side of it is that both Brahim and Dio Monde are more, are more wide players. So you saw when Trent and Dio Monde came in, right? Trent would take on an inverted right back row, which means he's more central. And then Dio Monde is providing the width. Whereas when it's Dumfries, Dumfries is the one providing those overlotes, providing the width. And then Art of Hedges a little bit more central. So he takes on more

14:27in the left half space. So he doesn't provide you with that width. So Maurinho will have to figure that out because Trent is our best right back. And Art of Guler cannot be benched. That's the way I see it. So I understand tactically speaking why Maurinho has opted for Dumfries plus Trent. As Dumfries plus Art, I don't know why I keep making that mistake. The logic is sound to me, but I also think that we have to kind of look at the other side of this too is that to be fair, I don't think Dumfries looks right yet either. I believe in Dumfries. I think he's going to be good. I don't think he's been good so far. I think that first game he was solid. He doesn't look quite there yet. I don't think he's hit his stride at Reumjord yet. It's still early, but I think it's also fair to point out he's been poor overall. I didn't like his performance today. I thought again, positionally he was fine in that he made really good overlotes and created space for his teammates. And he made those correct off ball runs, but his touches were

15:32not good and his balls were not good and this passing wasn't great. And he looked at like uncharacteristically weak on the ball at times too. So I don't know if that's a fitness thing or match-financing. I don't know what that is. To be fair to him, I think it's still early, but I also think Trent is arguing with the greatest, probably the greatest passing right back in the history of football. And I think you have to factor that in. It's all about pairings, right? I mean, like, it's nice to see that when we had SPN, we had Trent in as well. But then we lost Artegoulers final ball as well. And I think that part of it had to do with that, it was two-fold. Artegoulers was on a yellow card and on the verge of a second yellow, but also Morty and you just doesn't want to pair him with Trent. So those are all things that he's considering, but either way that has to be figured out and Dumpreeze needs to improve. Back to the starting lineup, I was a little bit surprised that Bernardo didn't start this game. One, given that he can't play against Inter, but you know, you could say that about

16:37Kamma Vingo too, who can't play against Inter, so we started this game. So what are you going to do both of them, unless you're going to play both of them? But one of the things that I've been saying the last few days, and we've had three members only shows the past three days, so I've said this a couple times in the past couple of days, excuse me if you have already heard me say this, but if you're not a member, you probably haven't heard me say it. I think the double, any double pivot that does not involve Bernardo Silva is going to struggle under pressure, unless it's at Malaga at home. You had Fetty and Kamma Vingo and double pivot against Malaga at home, that's fine. Malaga are not going to threaten you. They're not going to make you feel uncomfortable. I thought there were moments in this game where Betis died up the intensity and the aggressive press. They weren't doing it all game to be clear, but they were phases, and it struggled to escape. You basically have, if you're not going to play Bernardo, your only other option is to put

17:37Bellingham or Arda deeper, but Bellingham and Arda are playing higher off the pitch, and they can play 10 positions at once. So the options of Fetty and Kamma Vingo and eventually true, many of these guys need to step up. I thought Kamma Vingo was fine to an extent on the ball, in the sense that he was the primary ball progress. He was dropping as a third center back in the build up phase. His distribution was for the large part good. He was a bit panicky at times, but also he is going to play it safe for the most part. I don't think Betis truly put pressure on him, and I think teams who do are going to make that double pivot struggle. I was surprised to see Bernardo on the bench for that reason, because I circled this game as a difficult game on the calendar. You know, it's Betis away, and they have talented players, and it's going to be difficult game. I don't know, I just looked at that. I'm not saying that the double pivot was why we lost, of course. I think I already discussed the reasons why Rihamja lost this game, but I did

18:37take note of that. I just don't like the double pivot that doesn't involve Bernardo, which is problematic in itself, because Bernardo can play every game. We haven't seen any signs yet of modding your playing Gullair deeper or bellingham deeper, although maybe against Inter will see something like bellingham deeper and then Brahim as the 10, because we really don't have many options unless he plays the sterile. It'll be interesting to see what he does there. Here are... I'm going to share some stuff on my screen. Oh, let's take a break, because Managing Mutual is tweeting up more in your post game quotes. We'll read these all together. More or you just says, I haven't seen the incidents back. I haven't seen them, so I can't comment. The team played a great game. Sometimes you lose and you don't know why, you don't know how to explain it. We were dominant, Imperial defenders. So much positional playing attack. We would have left frustrated with a draw. Imagine a loss. Carlos SB did good work. We didn't get points from it,

19:40but he did good work. He's humble. He wants to learn. I couldn't be happier with him. It was difficult to take Arda off. Betis players are clever like that. Clever than Realme Jouplers. Realme Jouplers are pure naive. Realme Jouplers get up after a foul. Betis players are more clever. I like that. There's a little bit of more in you in there. I had to take Arda off because I felt that he was in a situation where he was at risk. That was kind of a question I had earlier. Was it because of his upbringing and trend or was it the yellow card thing? More or you seem to say was the yellow card and not a tactical decision. He also says the team was good. They had a few counterattacks maybe, but we created so much. 10, 15, 18 shots on target. Three or four clear chances. Three or four impressive saves. More or you also says, look, I don't know why I got a yellow card, but I accepted the Betis players in front of me, acted as if he were dead. The other incidents, I can't say I haven't seen it. I like that the referee let the game flow, but the yellow cards I accept mine. Maybe I'll change my opinion watching it back tomorrow. I actually pretty much

20:46agree with most of Morrino's assessment. I do think we, I mean, you replayed this game nine times out of 10. You probably win this two, three, no. That's the reality of it. That's not an excuse. That's not a moral victory at all. It's just kind of the reality that this came down to bad finishing. The second half was poor and conceding that go on the set piece was the death bell because Betis just completely closed up shop. He's still, he's still talking or at least managing, which is still tweeting stuff out. So he continues to say, I'm naive. In the sense that with little, the Betis players make a lot out of it for the referee. First minute step on the foot to Valverde. He steps on his feet with dignity as Ream, the captain, the same in front of me. And I thought that they wouldn't need an ambulance. When one player steps forward to take a penalty, we all do as a team it together. Okay, so actually before we get to some stats, I wanted to save

21:50this for the end, but since Morrino's talking about it, I'm going to bring it up now too, because I took notes of this. So one of my biggest gripes with, and I'm not going to get into some of the kind of more weird stuff that was happening late in the game. From just from a referee standpoint, personally, I didn't understand why SB's goal was this lot until I realized, okay, it was actually earlier in the play. SB was an offside. That's fine. Obviously, it's a correct call. I'm still confused about the penalty. I didn't really understand how we earned that penalty. I guess it was a handball, I think. I mean, it looked harsh to me if I'm being objective. What else? Should and backpaste penalty have been replayed? I guess the argument that my commentator made was that, although it looked like there was infringement into the box, I think it was Bartra. I could be mistaken.

22:50Actually, didn't land his second foot on the ground, and his other foot was still behind the line, technically, according to rules, according to the commentator, is that that's not an infringement. I don't know. One of my biggest gripes with referring in La Liga is that they do a terrible job of protecting their stars. In fact, they punish their stars. We saw this a lot, especially with Vinesias over the years. I thought, basically, they have free license to kick the shit out of him, break him in half. We've all seen the stats that it takes 16,000 on him before Yellow Card is brandished, which is not the case for Laminia Mal, who I think has to concede three or four before Yellow Card is brandished to the opponent. I think one of my biggest concerns, apart from how stupid it is not to protect your stars, is that one day someone's going to get injured. The play where in the first half where there was a knee on the back of Bellingham's calf

23:56was so dangerous, and the referee was right there staring at it and said, all ball. And it was a clear, not only foul, but Yellow Card. It was a dangerous, dangerous tackle that went through his back and didn't touch the ball. And you keep letting that shit go. It's going to embole in opposing players to just keep getting away with it until it's going to be too late. One day someone's going to get injured really bad. This league doesn't give it two shits about protecting its stars. I've always hated about this because on top of the terrible job they do at marketing and the stuff that they spend so much time on with regards to copywriting and banning people on Twitter, whereas you see like NBA doing revenue sharing models with people who post videos of their league because they're promoting it. It's so backwards, but on top of being backwards they also have a do a terrible job protecting their stars. You, Morin, you brought up the first minute. That was Kucho Fernandez stopping on FedEx' feet

25:00allowed. Then a knee through Bellingham's calf, absolutely crazy allowed. 61st minute, Goulare does a roulette outside of Betis's box, clearly hacked. Great fricking position, no call. 72nd minute, an elbow through Jude Bellingham's back outside the box. Great fricking position, no foul. That stuff, it's just it adds up. I mean like this is not why we lost the game. It's more the reason I even brought this up in the first place is because one day one of these stars is going to get injured because opponents know that it's free reign. It's licensed to kill out there. That's what it is. So here's what I want to go circle back to the theme of finishing and bad finishing and all that stuff, which has been the theme most of the theme today. Hold on, I got to change this background too. That's not it either, whatever it doesn't matter. Okay, so

26:01I actually wonder if they even have this up yet understat they do beautiful look at this. I mean you can't like more than yours not wrong in his assessment. What is going on here? This is real Betis. One incredible opportunity and I didn't mention this but Bellingham needed to be more aware and react better because he let Troy Parrot beat him on that rebound. That's a big chance. 80th minute. Data side. What the hell is going on here guys? Come on. XG up 3.38, which includes obviously the penalty of which is 0.76. Vinicius Jr. hits the post from here and I know the angle was tight but it was a wide open goal and he just kind of looked clumsy and the lead up off the ball and he could have made the angle better for himself. What the hell is this? Embape. Left footed shot block. He didn't catch it cleanly.

27:06Embape. Miss penalty. Embape. I believe this is the same sequence. 42nd minute. Yeah, it's the double chance. Block shot again. What's this? Vinicius. Art of Goulier sets him up beautifully. And I'm just counting the bigger ones. What's this? Dean Housen. That was a good one. I don't I think that might have been offside to be fair but I can't remember. Dean Housen is the last person I'm going to blame today. He was terrific and it's not his job to score and did a really good job of getting on the ends of corners and stuff. And then there's just a bunch of these other half-ass chances. One thing we've generally been good at, which you weren't good at today, was that if we miss clear chances, we at least make up for it by scoring impossible goals. Embape is very good at that at missing easy chances but then he scores a goal last so that only he can score fine. We just didn't get that today. This is the theme. This is the story of the game guys. It was a terrible second half. Yes, but this game was lost in the first half where it should have been put to bed.

28:15Embape had seven shots today. And four of them on target and then Vinnie had four shots, belling him at three shots. Yeah. I'm just flipping to the numbers, see what I also missed that looks interesting. We really didn't have that much to do defensively. We really didn't. And that's what annoys me. So like it's not, it sounds like loser quotes from what are you going to say that we were dominant in stuff but looking at everything, he's not wrong. We didn't put our chances away. That's what I came down to. Okay. What's going on in what are you going to press or any other quotes and I got to look at the chat too. Okay, let me see. And also is there anything else from my notebook that I want to address? The subs. 64th minute Dio Monday comes in for Arda Guller who was on the verge of a second yellow.

29:20Bernardo came in for Kamavinga and Trent came in for Dumfries which led to Dio Monday providing more width and Trent going a bit inverted. Yeah, I think we discussed that part quite a bit. Yeah. I think I got the important stuff out of the way. I just want to reiterate that I think the standouts for me today were definitely Arda Guller and Dean Housen and I thought Jude was great too but Jude should have been reacting better on the goal we conceded. What's going on the chat guys? I'm so sorry I haven't had a chance to look at the chat today. I'm assuming it's all civilized and everybody's happy. Kumpai, great stuff. Okay, we'll flip to the super chats to see what we got. Johann Juarez says I wasn't bad by his biggest defender. Not anymore. Well, okay, I mean it was a bad game from him but I mean hopefully he'll just bounce back and score buckets of goals after this.

Blada vibes only says only giving SP the last eight minutes when we need a goal is negligible and Bappé and Vinny were awful today but Houset deserves smoke for that SP decision. Yeah, I um that's I think you may have joined late but this was something that I addressed early that the elephant in the room is that we can all see SB needs to play more. The elephant in the room is that he can't be subbed on for anyone. This is a struggle. So we're in this situation where like when we had Houset it was different because you could stop people off like because we didn't have Benzema. So you essentially what usually what would happen is Rodrigo would come up if I'm if I'm remembering correctly. We just don't have someone we can't stop off in your own Bappé or I would say even Jude. So this is a this is a this is basically an eternal struggle that will not go away anywhere and by the way those of you guys who think Andrew's gonna get playing time I mean good luck. I don't really understand why we kept him

31:24I know what I know for sure is that Maurinho himself wanted Andrew to stay but I think it's insurance for Mbappé and Dio Monday to an extent on the right wing. I don't know man he should have gone out on loan probably and even if he did the problem doesn't get solved at the end of the season. So I really don't know what's going to happen to him. Femme B. M. he says the subs came too late the game especially SB needs to play yeah I think we're all in agreement about SB it's a struggle because you want him to play more but you have to be able to the other thing I will say this is this one of the things I didn't mention today because I mentioned earlier that the counter argument is always like okay well Venetius is a moment of brilliance right so you keep him in the game are we sure that Vinnie has is more likely to have a moment of brilliance other than you know over these guys over Arda over SB who literally nearly scores our scores the goal every minute he plays in you know I and I think we have to look at that you know it's really it's really

32:25difficult having meritocracy at this club when it's built around superstars and I'm not criticizing the model necessarily because the model has work we have more champions in trophies than anyone and all of those came on the back of superstars you know so I'm not criticizing the model but I think there are there are times that why I think we we take it to we over correct almost like we almost take that too far in that direction and then we're stuck in that situation where we can't take these guys off and that kind of handcuffs us a little bit tactically. Blada says SB and Trent should have been on sooner SB should have come in for Kamma Vinga and Shaxfu says I felt like this reminded me of Mordynos first in we wasted so many chances and he said this quote one day some poor rival is going to pay for all the chances we are missing. God willing my friend God willing listen September 4th we have no idea how the rest of the season is panning out and this was a setback and you just got to come back and come back stronger each game
