3:05some best team in the national football league. Patriots are the worst one of those might hold up over the course of the season. I doubt both will the Seahawks winners last night against the Patriots in the season. Openers they celebrated their super bowl 60 win and not a great performance. The Patriots and Drake may and also losing why the seahawks a Brown to what has been reported as a high ankle sprain almost certainly means he will not be in the lineup when the Steelers go to Foxboro and we too. So something to keep an eye on for sure in that regard. Today I want to talk about the Steelers defense and pattern Graham. Get a good question from say my name. Who want to know how defenses figure out. What personnel offenses are in and how they do it so quickly. And it ties back into Patrick Graham and his position on the field in the way he's going to be calling plays this year.

4:06So we're going to bring all that together and some of this is going to be a story I'm working on about Patrick Graham that I think is probably going to run. On Saturday so stay tuned for that. So the way it works at the NFL level and frankly I think probably the college level to is that there is a coach staff member but probably a coach of some sort who is in the press box. Who's job first and foremost before he does anything else is to determine what personnel the other team is in. So when they come off the sideline I'm in the huddle. What kind of people do they have? Do they have three wide receivers and one running back and one tight end which is pretty much the standard look across football these days. Do they have a full back? Do they have two tight ends? Do they have four wide receivers? Because the defense of coordinator or the defense of play call or if he's not the defense of coordinator needs to know that in order to call the right defense to get the right personnel on the field and has to be done quickly.

5:14By rule the offense has to give the defense time to substitute if they are substituting you can't just run guys on the field and go snap the ball but it is done all that much time. And so the defense needs to know what's going on quickly they can get a substitution get guys into the field and then get a play call. So one guy in the booth has binoculars on the offensive sideline and then he's going to say it's 12 it's 12 it's 12 personnel. You might even say which tight end because sometimes that matters you know if you're playing against the Steelers you may want to know if it's Robert Tanya and Pat Faranath. Or Donna Washington and Riley Noah Kanske those are both two tight end formations at least could be two tight information but that's two very different personalities of personnel. And so they may give each package that other teams use a nickname for that week where they might just go with the traditional 12 11 22 whatever it is and maybe just give some more specifics.

6:25At that time the defensive coordinator is going to start looking through his play sheet to determine what he wants the play call to be. While that's happening whoever the coach is who is in charge of substituting for the defense whoever's running the sideline for the defense is the first thing the defensive coordinator is going to do is say what package the defense is going to be in. Base nickel dime heavy nickel quarter dollar whatever you got. So that they can make a substitution because that is the thing that takes the longest to do and also usually although I don't necessarily always see this in the NFL level usually there is going to be some kind of signal made from the sideline to the field. That tells the guys that are staying on the field what kind of personnel it's going to be.

7:25So a lot of times it will just be like a card that gets held up sometimes at the signal a hand signal from the sideline. Maybe sometimes that I just be communicated through the helmet to Patrick Queen and then he'll have to tell everybody but a lot of times that'll be communicated and sometimes the sideline might even yell it. They may say nickel nickel nickel coming in. But that's going to be communicated one way or another to the team on the field what personnel the offense is in and then what personnel we're going to be. And then the terms of coordinate makes the play call that's radioed in and the play collar then realize that to the rest of the defense. That is to happen very quickly very very quickly you are right about that. And so like I said one guy on the but not killers watching the personnel come off the field and on the field. That signal to the guys on the field that then the defensive coordinator calls out a personnel package that is communicated to whoever's running the sideline to get the right guys under the field.

8:32And then the play call is made communicating through the communicator to Patrick Queen in the stairs case and then he realized that message to the rest of the defense and the other. They can also have and they do have set up backup hand signals if that communicator for whatever reason isn't working. Queen had to look at the hand signals on the side. So that's all that works now the reason I said this time is back to Patrick Queen is that for the first time in a long time the series defense coordinator is not going to be on the sideline this year Patrick Queen is going to be in the booth. And when the reasons Patrick Queen said he likes that is that he that that he can see just as well as the guy whose job it is that he's going to be in the lead. So that's what personnel is coming under the field from the booth. So while that person is still going to communicate that to the sideline so the sideline can communicate in the field and so they can get the substitute ready.

9:41Actually kind of gives him a jump on the play calling. So he knows right away what the offense is doing in fact a lot of times you can see who's coming under the field from the next play. Before the last place even snapped and so he can kind of be working ahead but you're not going to see from the opposite sideline. In between drives the coordinator is usually holding court with inside the ball over there on sideline going through the stills talking about what happened what they're going to change and how they're going to make it different. He doesn't have that ability. He has Joe wit on the staff who used to be a defense coordinator. He has Jason Simmons on the staff who is a you know a passing game coordinator and has been an assistant coach for a very long time is a guy would not surprise me at all if he's a coordinator in this league sometimes soon.

10:42And so Grimm said he is able to rely on those guys to do the between drives coaching which frees him up to be in the booth and call place from there. I think in general this sort of signifies like a slightly more analytical approach to the way the Steelers are doing things this year just from their coaching staff from top to bottom and I think it's about how Patrick Graham is wired. He's a person who thinks about the game a lot and I think that is a position where he'll be able to make a pretty big impact with his play calling. And so it's very different. It's very new to the Steelers. I think it's it fits Patrick Graham very well. But it was a good question because it ties all the things together and I have been working on this story on Graham. We had a long one on one conversation. I've talked about you had a people about him as well. So hoping to get that up on Saturday morning for you guys which should be a lot of fun.

11:44But yeah, good question. And I think an interesting answer. So hopefully guys enjoyed that at the time of the site right now, big story. I wrote on Jack Sawyer and the Steelers for the time of pick last year who I think doesn't it's not getting any hype for a guy who was national champion and a team captain at a higher state, which is just up the road. And a lot of over that between the Ohio State and Steelers fan bases, it really exceeded expectations last year. Should a real Mac for making big plays around the football with a couple of interceptions and sack and some time for loss and pass breakups and things like that. And you know, part of it is obviously that people recognize that he stuck at fourth on this deck chart. So the point that yesterday somebody asked Mike McCarty a question about the three ed rushers that he said, well, we have more than three. And I very happenstance that happened because I've been working on this story for a while. And I had to jack.

12:50And he said, yeah, I mean, one of the things I'm really focusing on is taking advantage of those opportunities when they come and make sure that offense knows when I'm out there, like, oh, they have four. And how he's really begun to appreciate the process of doing most of his work and most of his improvement behind the scenes right now. And how different that is than his previous experiences. And obviously the sort of frustration might not be the wrong word, but the adjustment to not playing nearly as much as you'd like as a competitor. And I think it's really good story to get your pet on as well.
