Donald Trump is threatening civilian targets in Iran over the closure of the
Strait of Hormuz. Hi, I'm Vergesh Dave. This is Big Headlines. Everything you
need to know to be in the know in just five minutes.
In a profanity-laced post on Easter Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump promised to
bomb Iran's electrical plants and bridges on Tuesday if the Strait of Hormuz isn't
opened. CNN's Paula Hancock says Iranian embassies around the world are mocking Trump's
threats.
The Iranian Embassy in India, for example, has posted quote, swearing and throwing insults
are how sore loser brats behave. Get a grip on yourself, old man.
Meanwhile, Iran is formally rejecting a draft proposal for a temporary ceasefire in
the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, even as U.S. officials weigh the proposal. The
plan was being pitched by mediators from Egypt, Pakistan, and Turkey. Iran is also confirming
the death of the head of intelligence for the revolutionary guard in a missile strike
in Tehran by Israel.
The Artemis II astronauts are performing a lunar flyby today. It's taking the ship almost
a half million kilometers from Earth. Canadian Jeremy Hansen and his American crewmates are
taking turns observing and photographing geological features on the moon. CNN's Hannah
Bata.
The astronauts will capture images of craters and lava flows, places never seen by the
naked eye. They'll also take photos of Earth and other planets visible in the distance.
They're capsule scheduled to land in the Pacific Ocean on Friday.
It's the final day of advance polling for the upcoming federal bi-elections. Voters
are electing MPs in three different writings, University Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest,
both in Toronto, as well as Terrebonne in Montreal. Election day is April 13. The bi-elections
will have significant consequences for the immediate future of the liberal government.
If the Liberals win two of the three bi-elections, they'll have a majority government, thanks
to several floor crossings in recent months. Both Toronto writings have regularly gone
to the Liberals in recent elections. Those seats were vacated when former cabinet ministers
Christian Freeland and Bill Blair stepped down. The bi-election in Tehrbonne is happening
because the liberal candidate there received just one more vote than her blockade qua counter
part in last year's election and a dispute over a mail-in ballot left the election result
up in the air.
Assomber anniversary is being marked in Saskatchewan. It's been eight years since the Humboldt Broncos
crash that claimed the lives of 16 players, coaches and staff. 13 others were injured when
a semi-truck collided with the junior hockey team's bus. The Humboldt Broncos Memorial
Committee says work continues to memorialize the site of the crash with a parking lot and
pathways expected to be completed this year. A monument will also be built to honor the
victims and the city is planning a future recreation facility that'll include tributes
to the team.
Savannah Guthrie is back to work on the today show.
Good morning. Welcome to today on this Monday morning. We are so glad you started your
week with us and it is good to be home. Yes, it is good to have you back at home.
Well here we go, ready or not. Let's do the news. Yes, so good to have you back.
This morning marked Guthrie's first time co-hosting the show in just over two months
after her mother's apparent abduction. Her former co-host, Hota Copy, has been filling
in for her. 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1st when police
believed she was taken against her will from her Arizona home. There's been no sign of
Nancy despite an intense search involving thousands of federal and local officers and
volunteers. No suspects have been named in the case either.
If you haven't listened yet, today on the big story podcast, is it time for Canada to
toughen up its social media laws for youth? host Karen Cielin speaks with Metta Whistleblower
Arturo Bayjar.
Is there anything in the interim like, you know, we can do to make social media safer
for young people? Does it just come down to, is the onus now just really on parents?
Yeah, I think the onus right now, tragically and sadly, is on parents, right? And it's
like, I mean, I get the question about like, well, what about like, aren't parents really
the responsible ones? I mean, I think a good metaphor in that context is, when it's
time for your team to learn to drive, whose job is it that the car that they use is engineered
to be safe enough? And that's what we're talking about here, right? So right now we know
the car is unsafe. And so then for the time being, the best thing we can do as parents
is to educate ourselves about the harms that all of our kids are experiencing. Like, I
promise you, what my daughter experienced, your kids are experiencing. If you ask them
and make it safe for them to tell you, which is absolutely essential, they will let
you know like the things that they're living with and then as parents, you can help them
navigate that. You can listen to the full episode wherever you get your podcasts. Now
you're in the know. Thanks for listening to Big Headlines. Make sure you follow, share and
review Big Headlines. Today's episode was produced by Felix Slu and Rika Emma Turo is our
lead producer. I'm Vergesh Dave. Have an amazing day. We'll talk to you tomorrow.
