Everyone saw the playoff run, but not everybody saw what Pete Golding was doing.
0:54
You are a Lockdown Ole Miss, your daily podcast on the Ole Miss Rebels, part of the
0:59
Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
1:06
Hello, I'm Stephen Willis.
1:07
On today's show, Pete Golding finally speaks to the media today after the playoff run
1:12
will explain why managing a leaked talent is critical to this season, but we will start
1:18
with the 4D Chess move from last season that might be still shaping Ole Miss.
1:23
All that and more on today's Lockdown Ole Miss podcast.
1:27
The 4D Chess that I am referring to is the role of John David Baker during the playoff
1:34
We did shows during that time frame of kind of guessing what Pete Golding might be thinking
1:41
about, and honestly, it might be more complex than even what we thought at that point.
1:48
John David Baker was hired just so you know at the very beginning of the December cycle,
1:55
somewhere before the first playoff game against the two-line green wave.
1:59
It was in the fallout when Lane Kiffin was pulling all of the shenanigans he could during
2:07
that time frame with his staff and stuff like that, pre-portaling, tampering, all of that
2:12
stuff was happening, but Pete Golding used that to his advantage.
2:18
He decided to play a little bit of 4D Chess, something that people assigned with Lane from
2:26
But the 4D Chess that I was thinking of is hey, let's retain as many of these offensive
2:31
coaches as possible, many of these offensive players as possible, and bring in a coach
2:37
to try to maximize that school skill set in case they come back.
2:42
At the same time that coach can be building a transfer of portal pre-portal roster before
2:48
the playoff run happens, and the longer Ole Miss goes, the better off that they will
2:54
Ole Miss of course played three playoff games, and John David Baker got more instrumental
2:59
as the playoffs went on.
3:02
We're not going to worry about the transfer of portal right now.
3:05
We will simply worry about the offense.
3:08
Now the co-offensive coordinator when Charlie Wise got to Ole Miss was John David Baker.
3:15
Now the play collar at the time was Charlie Wise Jr. because of photographic memory and
3:20
stuff that we talked all about.
3:22
But he was a good offensive coordinator that handled the bulk of the work when Lane
3:26
Kiffin wasn't Ole Miss.
3:28
It took a long time for people to realize that, but I'm glad they finally did.
3:32
Charlie Wise is a good dude.
3:34
As soon as it was decided that everything was going on, Charlie Wise gave his commitment
3:40
that he was going to coach the offense throughout the run of the playoffs.
3:44
It didn't matter what.
3:45
He was going to be there.
3:46
If you want proof of that happening, look at the contract extension that Charlie Wise
3:51
got to make sure that he stayed on the staff whenever they got worried that Charlie Wise
3:55
Jr. was going to stick around.
3:58
Pete Golding saw everything that was going on and realized the whole time that he wanted
4:05
Remember at that time frame, John David Baker was a very hot commodity for Virginia Tech
4:09
and for South Carolina, but John David Baker wanted the Ole Miss job.
4:14
I think it was pretty much in the cards from very early on that John David Baker was going
4:20
Pete Golding still needed to play a little bit of 40 chess as well.
4:24
We have Charlie Wise Jr. that said he was going to stay throughout the playoffs.
4:29
That became Iron Club.
4:32
John David Baker was coming in at the beginning of December.
4:35
He had to make sure that no shenanigans were going to happen from the very beginning
4:40
that could kind of throw a wrench into this whole play.
4:45
So John David Baker was sitting there and got to look at the roster throughout the playoffs.
4:51
Once everything got ironed out, he got to see everything.
4:54
He knows what plays that Trinidad Chambers is comfortable with.
4:58
He knows what plays that he's not comfortable with, all of that stuff.
5:02
It's like he had a preseason when it came to the playoff run having three games, having
5:09
a bigger influence in each and every one until the end.
5:13
So the point where they had to, by the end, they had a solid relationship.
5:16
Kiwan Lacey had a solid relationship with John David Baker.
5:20
All of these offensive stars, there was a solid bond built during that playoff run because
5:26
it was over a month to where he was in that room.
5:30
I get that they had to decide things and all of that, but the relationship was there.
5:38
John David Baker took the, what he likes, what he doesn't like, the tempo of everything.
5:44
I think Chuck Roundsville was talking about on the, on three podcast with Ben Garrett today,
5:51
talking about realizing the flow that the tempo offense needs to be in and all of that.
5:58
He basically got about a month and a half of OJT, OJT that he didn't need because he
6:05
necessarily been on the staff for three years, but you got to see the play collar aspect
6:12
And he got to step away a little bit and see it from the outside, just kind of look what's
6:18
He knows what's work.
6:19
He knows the process.
6:20
He knows what is possible for an offensive coordinator.
6:24
Now, the question for me is going to be how does John David Baker take this information?
6:32
All of this stuff, this run that they had during the playoffs, he is perfectly in position
6:37
with the best quarterback and the best running back in college football.
6:40
We will talk about that in the next segment.
6:43
But how does he take the information that he got during the playoff run?
6:47
And I'm assuming it's going to be very good because he is an extremely bright guy.
6:54
He was the coach of Ole Miss in 2021, as a tight-ends coach, co-offensive coordinator
7:02
2024 and 2025, he was the offensive coordinator at East Carolina, where he took an offense
7:07
that was routinely in the 130s nationally and made them into a top 15 top 20 unit, even
7:14
though they had G6 players on their roster.
7:18
They were going to be outmatched at certain points of every game.
7:23
John David Baker wanted to come back, but he has basically the building blocks that has
7:32
already been attached through Jeff Levy.
7:35
Because if you remember correctly, Jeff Levy was the first offensive coordinator that
7:39
John David Baker worked under at Ole Miss.
7:43
The reason he became the co-offensive coordinator was because of a pay raise because he was
7:48
able to recruit Jackson Dart and Michael Trigg to Ole Miss.
7:54
But then you saw the fingerprints of the John David Baker offense all over what was going
8:00
on, especially in the passing game.
8:02
What you saw in the passing game in 2024 and 2025 and 2023, a lot of that was John David
8:11
Baker's fingerprints all over, especially the sale routes at the end of the game.
8:17
I give John David Baker 100% credit for realizing that Dayquan Wright was the mismatch,
8:25
for all mists against the Miami Hurricanes.
8:27
It was too little, too late.
8:30
But the touchdown at the end, John David Baker was coaching the tight ends that game because
8:35
Lane Kiffin had pulled coaches off of the Ole Miss staff.
8:39
Anybody that would go, you had to go back to Baton Rouge.
8:42
So John David Baker had to step in and coach this offense and is my belief that he saw the
8:48
tight end sale route from the HBAC position becoming the weapon.
8:53
That's a play that is comfortable for Trinidad Jamblis and Dayquan Wright is an absolute weapon
8:59
with the ball in his hands.
9:01
Down the field, I believe that he saw that coming in as the tight ends coach.
9:08
He saw the opening of the space.
9:10
John David Baker's passing offense has a lot of air raid type principles, but mainly
9:17
it's just the principles and concepts of what's going on.
9:21
The switch releases all of that stuff.
9:23
That is a John David Baker staple, the same stuff that he did at East Carolina, the same
9:28
stuff that he did at Ole Miss whenever he was here before.
9:33
Pete Golding seeing all of this and realizing, okay, we have a really good offensive coordinator
9:39
and we have an unknown number of games because this all started before the playoff run, an
9:45
unknown number of games to get him up to speed and comfortability because the reality of
9:52
the situation is when Charlie wise junior left to go to LSU, it should have taken a little
10:00
If Pete Golding fell for the trap that, hey, we need to hold off and try and get Charlie
10:05
wise junior and John David Baker goes away and you have another coach coming in.
10:09
He's starting him blind.
10:11
He has no relationship with these players.
10:13
He has nothing to lean back on as far as what he has seen with his own eyes.
10:20
John David Baker got three playoff games, got to treat it like a preseason for the 2026
10:25
season and now this team is in a position to absolutely explode offensively.
10:33
This is a team that averaged over 30 points a game against everybody.
10:37
With the exception of the Miami Hurricanes and the playoffs and I think they got 27 in
10:42
that game, but they scored on everybody.
10:45
They went over 30 points twice against the Georgia Bulldogs.
10:49
Charlie wise did a fantastic job with the team a year ago.
10:54
This team with John David Baker, with the best quarterback in the country, with the best
10:59
running back in the country, with wide receivers that are going to be dynamic.
11:04
With the offensive line that is going to be dynamic, although you don't need it to be great
11:11
because of what Trinidad Champles can do.
11:15
I think this is an offense that can routinely score above 40 points against absolutely anybody.
11:20
I don't know if there's a defense out there that can completely shut down this offense the way I sit right now.
11:26
And John David Baker is a large part of that and being able to have access to this team during the game.
11:32
To have access to this team during the playoff run is a huge part of that.
11:37
Pete Golding absolutely played 40 chess because this team has something that previous Ole Miss teams did not have.
11:50

15:48
So we'll see how that goes now.
15:50
We talked about keeping the Ferrari on the road for John David Baker.
15:55
Keep it between the lies.
15:56
Just don't wreck it.
15:57
Because the reality of what's going on.
16:00
You've got the best quarterback in all of college football.
16:03
He finished eight in the Heisman trophy with a coach that did not promote him at all.
16:08
He did not mention the thing.
16:10
Just tried to keep the value of that player down and suppressed enough to where he could transfer to wherever he was going.
16:17
Because at that point, I think it was either for the LSU.
16:20
The only thing that was for certain as he wasn't staying at all miss.
16:25
Last year 294, 445, 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns, three interceptions.
16:33
And that was in 13 games, I think, because he didn't play the first two.
16:39
But Trinidad Chambers really, really good player.
16:42
And listen, that game against Georgia was, was special, man.
16:46
That game was unreal.
16:48
And the sugarball he completely took over that game and became a superstar.
16:52
He is somebody that has Ole Miss fans that completely ready to go.
16:56
Now, if you look at running backs, Kiwan Lacey, 306 carries.
17:00
I know that they don't want to give him 306 carries this year.
17:04
He had 1567 yards, which is a tie for the school record, by the way.
17:09
24 touchdowns for this player.
17:12
He reminds me a lot of Derek McFadden.
17:15
And the new number one is Duce Alexander.
17:18
Had a diving catch in the very first practice.
17:21
He is going to be a star.
17:23
Had an 88 yard touchdown for Ole Miss against Mississippi State.
17:26
Our catch is 684 yards, two touchdowns.
17:29
And add that with the transfers that came in.
17:32
This Ole Miss team is going to be pretty good.
17:34
So that's what I mean by keep the Ferrari between the lives.
17:38
If you can just do it, you have the talent to beat everybody on your schedule.
17:43
The only way that you lose to people on your schedule is if A,
17:47
you don't take them seriously or don't prepare well,
17:50
or do any of the little things that can get you beat.
17:54
We talked about yesterday him adopting the Sabin like culture of attention to detail
18:00
and all of that stuff to where players thinking about that is going to win close games.
18:06
That's how you get from a 10 win a year average to an 11 or 12 win per year average.
18:12
And Kurt Signetti is an example of a coach that has taken the Nick Sabin model up to the next level.
18:18
And now he has Indiana winning national titles.
18:21
Absolutely crazy. Good football coach.
18:24
So he is really good.
18:27
So John David Baker has to keep these players rolling.
18:32
And we mentioned in the first segment him being able to work with them for about a month and a half.
18:37
It seemed like of seeing what was going on and building up that rapport handed up being able to land.
18:44
I'm trying to dodge Hambliss and Kiwan Lacey and all of these guys came back.
18:50
Because when you looked at the transfer portal when it came open the next day,
18:54
now granted the NCAA work like crazy to keep trying to that out the field,
18:58
but that wasn't happening because Trinidad deserved to be on the field.
19:03
But Trinidad staying at Ole Miss Kiwan staying at Ole Miss.
19:07
And honestly, if the NCAA wouldn't have pulled the crap that they pulled,
19:11
I think Kaden Lee would have stayed at Ole Miss.
19:13
But the way it sits right now, you're like, okay, these are the holes that we need to fill.
19:18
And they went out and got unbelievably talented wide receivers.
19:22
Ole Miss has a niche that they hit in the wide receiver transfer portal market.
19:29
You don't get Eric Singleton, who everybody wants that's going to cost two million.
19:33
You go out and get Darryl Gill and not any disrespect against Darryl Gill,
19:38
but he is an extremely talented wide receiver that had horrible quarterback play.
19:44
The same thing with Deshaun Stribling, the same thing has happened over and over again.
19:48
Ole Miss gets wide receivers that are extremely talented that just have bad quarterbacks.
19:54
And they did that with Darryl Gill and John Tay Cook.
19:58
John Tay Cook is somebody that I think has a chance to be very special.
20:02
Elijah, more level if he breaks out.
20:05
I have a theory about him.
20:07
We will talk about it as it gets closer.
20:10
It's going to be on John David Baker to figure out how to make these elite players work together.
20:16
We talked about the relationship that he had back in the season,
20:19
but it's going to be how he deals with those elite players.
20:23
And if he can make it work, they're going to score a lot of points.
20:27
They're going to be crazy explosive because this is the reality, okay?
20:31
Everybody that's watching and listening is podcast that doesn't agree with me.
20:36
This is what I have to say about that.
20:39
You have the best quarterback in the country, bar none.
20:43
But we're not even going to talk about that.
20:45
But that's the point where it starts.
20:47
When you're playing defensively against teams,
20:50
they're going to immediately focus on Trinidad Chambers.
20:53
Well, next to him is the best running back in the country,
20:56
who ran for 1,500 yards in the year before and 24 touchdowns.
21:01
So you've got to at least split your focus and now it's run pass and all of this.
21:05
You've got a couple of jets on the outside.
21:07
Darryl, you can absolutely fly.
21:10
Duce Alexander can absolutely fly.
21:13
John T. Cook was an electric factory at DeSoto, high in Texas.
21:18
If he puts it all together,
21:20
which he started to do at Syracuse last year with what was it?
21:26
Let's see with the number.
21:27
45 catches, 549 yards, two touchdowns with no quarterback play.
21:34
If you keep that between the tracks,
21:36
this is an offense that's going to score and score a lot.
21:40
The question that you have going into spring practice
21:44
are the tackle positions.
21:46
Tres Davis, in my opinion, is going to start at left tackle.
21:49
That's going to happen.
21:50
You have the middle of your offensive line, Patrick Kutus,
21:53
Bryson Sanders, Delano Townsend, that taking care of.
21:56
Four out of the five, I think are done.
22:01
Comes down to the right tackle position.
22:03
This is a very serious turn.
22:05
The Tommy Kinsler, the Conner Halls, those type players.
22:09
If they can make it work,
22:12
you're going to see a very good football team offensively for Ole Miss.
22:17
We haven't even talked about what happened on the defensive side of the ball.
22:21
For the first time, in about a half a decade,
22:24
and in the first time in the NIL era,
22:27
the defensive side of the ball may have gotten preferential treatment.
22:32
So we will talk about them as we move on towards summer.
22:37
Remember, we're free and available in all the podcast apps
22:39
and on YouTube and a special low to the everydayers
22:43
who make this show what it is, your team every day.
22:47
Peek-olding meets the media today.
22:50
That's pretty good, right?
22:52
But what will we actually learn about this Ole Miss team?
22:56
That's coming up next.
22:58
Welcome to the five-hour energy flavor draft
23:04
with 18 different flavors to choose from,
23:06
including new options like confetti craze,
23:09
fruity rainbow, and cotton candy.
23:11
There's something for everyone.
23:13
The flavors are ready, and I have my number one pick
23:16
for the five-hour energy draft.
23:18
Now, I'm going to do this to the chagrin
23:21
of Chris Margler of Lockdown Gamecocks.
23:23
He is of the opinion you cannot have great or berry
23:27
as your number one flavor draft pick.
23:34
To be a number one draft pick, you need availability.
23:38
No matter which grocery store, which drug store,
23:41
which convenient store you walk into,
23:43
you can walk out with a grape, five-hour energy.
23:46
That alone gets them to the top of the pack.
23:49
Now, if taken to the fact is delicious as well,
23:52
and you have a number one draft pick as well.
23:55
So that is my top flavor.
23:57
Now, I do have sleepers.
23:59
I think pomegranate has the chance to be really good
24:02
with their tangy kick of what's going on.
24:06
And if you have a sweet tooth, of course, confetti craze,
24:09
fruity rainbow, cotton candy.
24:12
They're all delicious, honestly.
24:15
But, you know, we talked about grapes,
24:17
so berry would be available as well.
24:19
So maybe that one goes up the list.
24:21
I see there's so many flavors.
24:23
I'm a little bit confused of what can happen.
24:26
I think that one of the flavors you need to look at
24:29
that they need to make is cherry lime.
24:32
It's absolutely fantastic.
24:34
Maybe bring that over into the five-hour family.
24:38
So find your new flavor or five-hour energy shots available online
24:42
at fivehourenergy.com or at Amazon.
24:49
All right, so Pete Golding meets the media today
24:53
for the first time since.
24:56
I guess it was the post-game press conference
24:58
after the Miami lost back in January.
25:01
We're like January 8th or something like that.
25:04
There wasn't a signing day press conference,
25:06
which I get that there's not a need
25:09
for a February signing day press conference.
25:11
The only reason you go out and do those
25:13
is just to his brand recognition.
25:16
But you know, you're signing four players
25:19
in these spring transfer portal
25:21
or spring signing period.
25:25
Those aren't exactly dudes,
25:29
You can be in front of the media and have all that thing.
25:31
And with all of the state that I guess Debo
25:36
put with his tamper tantrum that he had,
25:39
I that might have played a role in it as well.
25:42
But this will be the first time
25:44
that Pete Golding has met the media.
25:47
I'm curious to see what he thinks
25:49
about this team moving forward.
25:51
He's a guy that kind of says what's on his mind.
25:54
Unlike what we had the last five years
25:56
where it sounds like he says something
25:59
but he actually didn't say anything.
26:02
So I'm curious to see how Pete Golding reacts
26:05
to this team moving forward.
26:08
We're getting ready to start putting pads on.
26:10
Contacts going to happen.
26:12
We're going to see players rise.
26:13
You're going to see players fall.
26:15
But the important thing whenever that happens
26:18
before the next time that we talk to Pete Golding
26:25
Because you will finish your acclimation days
26:28
and be out there with the shoulder pad.
26:30
Who's the offensive tackle that we talked about earlier?
26:33
The carrier's current Tommy Kinsler, counterhauls,
26:36
How does they look with the defensive line?
26:38
How does Blake purchase look like?
26:40
The transfer portal additions that they got in.
26:45
Jahim Otis coming in, Luke Forelli,
26:48
Keaton Thomas, Taj Butler,
26:50
those are going to be major or mainstay type players.
26:54
who's playing free safety?
26:56
These are all questions that I am interested
27:01
I don't know that we're going to hear anything
27:03
like that from Pete Golding today.
27:05
Whenever he addresses because they block that stuff down
27:09
and we saw from the early part of spring practice,
27:12
there's a Sabin-like culture he's taking cues
27:16
from the Nick Sabin system for what he does.
27:19
And a lot of that is kind of quiet when dealing with the media.
27:24
So we'll see what happens.
27:26
I'm curious to find out exactly how it works out.
27:31
