I have an interesting story that we've expected, some of us have expected now what Maliki Martin called the simple right. There have been whispers about this in Rome for a long time, decades upon decades, and so I'm Maliki Martin who passed away in 1999, talked about this. The simple right would be to a version of the mass, a liturgical reform that would strip about the consecration. It would be the ultimate acceptable to anybody who wants to come and participate, liturgy. And one of the warning signs that we're heading that way is you now have bishops saying that after 60 years of the new mass, none of us knows how to celebrate it properly. That's a stunning admission to put it mildly. And it's also not true. There are clearly bishops who, and priests who know how to offer the new mass, the way the
general destruction of the Roman Missile tells them to, because they're the ones who offer your so-called unicorn masses. You're very rare, reverent, no facortos. But we have a bishop going on the, just going public and saying it's admitting that it's all a hot mess and they don't know what they're doing. It's from Infovata Khanah, headline, or the 60 years after Vatican II, the head of liturgy at the Italian Episcopal Conference admits, we still don't know how to celebrate. So to make this a little more clear, you have a bishop who is, who runs the Italian bishops conference office of the liturgy, saying we still don't know how to celebrate the new mass. It's wonderful. Part of the crisis in the church isn't just a crisis of heresy and a crisis of an all out assault on Catholic morality and all these other really high-profile, extremely important things.
There's also a crisis of competency. How can they not know how to offer the mass, the normative mass, the sole expression of the Roman right, as they said in traditionalist custodous? After 60 years, how was that even possible? From the article, more than six decades after the approval of sacrosanctum, Consilium, and the liturgical reform that followed the Second Vatican Council, the Archbishop of Conzara, Skelus, Claudio Managio, president of the Episcopal Commission for the liturgy of the Italian bishops conference, as acknowledged that quote, we still do not know how to celebrate in a way that brings out the splendor of the liturgy. Like I said, there are plenty of bishops and priests who know how to actually offer the new mass in a way that actually looks like they believe what they say and believe what the church teaches about the real presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, because
everything in the how you offer the mass should point to that. Managio made this observation at the conclusion of the 76th National liturgical week, over August 24th, the 2017 Catania Sicily of the theme, a church that generates liturgy and Christian initiation. The preletto also heads the center for liturgical action was responsible for closing four days of work, dedicated to examining the relationship between liturgy and the transmission of faith. In as concluding remarks, Managio placed the balance of the conference under the category of wonder, taking up one of the central concepts of Francis' apostolic letter, Desiderivho Desideravi. I believe that the reflection and also the evaluation of this week should be done in light of an important category for the liturgy, which is wonder, which consists of realizing and becoming aware and thus being able, with greater reason, to get involved and participate he stated, according to the chronicle published by the Archdiocese of Catania. It was in his reflection on the way to celebrate that Managiano acknowledged that there is
still a long way to go. We still don't know how to celebrate in a way that brings out the liturgy. Huh, this statement takes on particular significance given the preleth's position and the context in which it was made. Managio not only directs the center for liturgical action, which organizes the National Liturgical Week but also chairs the CEI Commission specifically responsible for this matter. How does he not know how to offer the mass to the new mass in a way that offers, that looks Catholic? How does he not know how to do that? There is a dangerous admission here. After 60 years, if they do not know how to offer the new mass in a way that presents the wonders of the faith and the reality of Jesus Christ and all the rest of the things that the Church proclaims to be true. And the admitting that it is not possible with the new mass.
I am going to play doubles advocate on this question because I am one of the very few people who does not have overtostility to the new mass the way many of my, uh, will say, appears to do. It is true that, um, I am my family and not attended a new mass in many years for a lot of reasons that are very similar to others for other traditional Catholics. But I do not integrate those who still attend the new mass. I even admit that you, that the new mass is fully valid and all the rest. I just asked that if you are going to defend the new mass, you don't start by saying, well, it is valid because then I am going to ask how your marriage is. And if you say it is valid, I hope your spouse isn't listening because they are going to be pretty upset. It is not a good defense of the liturgy by saying, well, it is valid. Come over to the better defense. I focus more on ecclesiology. The changes to the theology of the church because it changes the identity of the church. And from there you get the liturgical question. But to play devil's advocate, I have known a great number of traditional Catholics who
the breaking point for them for abandoning the new mass entirely was not a clown mass. It was not James Martin types getting up at the Ambo and preaching heresy. It was the Reverend Novosordo, the unicorn mass that finally broke them and made them never come back to a TLM or never come back to a Novosordo to be TLM only. And if you are like that, if you are seeing this and you are one of those, in the comments explain it. And if you are going to have any conversation about this with each other, please do so with respect. Is the bishop here admitting it is not possible? No, not necessarily. You will never get into admit explicitly that it is not possible because if they started admitting that their liturgical reform project collapses. I fully endorse bringing back the TLM as the normative mass of the West. To do it peacefully in a way that doesn't cause mass exodus from your parishes, it is going to require it to be done, dealt will be required to have it done delicately.
Clearly we are not in a position for that to happen anytime soon. That's why I don't spend much time advocating for it. But is this bishop admitting that the critics of the new mass have said all along that it cannot be offered in a way that emphasizes the wonder of the faith as he called it, which is the supernatural, the mystery of faith essentially. It's a hard question. Not one I particularly like asking people, but people get very touchy about it as they should as you should on questions of the liturgy. You should get very touchy about it because the liturgy is where the rubber meets the road on what we proclaim with our lips to believe. It is where everything is funneled into the act of worship itself. It's very deadly serious and it's why having this bishop here, this bishop right here, is Bishop Claudio Maniaggio, who is the head of the liturgy office for the Italian
Bishop's conference. Saying that after 60 years they don't know how to offer the new mass in a way that reflects the Catholic faith. I'm going to leave you with this thought here. I have met Protestants who were feeling drawn to Catholicism and came to a new mass that was not offered in a clownish way. It was offered with respect. The priest was one you would trust to hear your confessions and teach the faith. And the reaction to the new mass was this. Oh, I recognize this. This is what we had in my Presbyterian church or this is what we had in my Lutheran church. And then you never see them again. Because they're, they're, they're, they're, they will tell you what's the point of converting. I got this already. I have seen this personally numerous times. Maybe there's something breaking this Bishop's conscience on this.
But he's married to the reform. To Vatican II. All of them are. Go look at your very best of your conservative cardinals who, who get denigrated by the Michael Lewises of the world and all the rest of them. When they defend the TLM, they still do it from the position of Vatican II was not been done right. Instead of the reforms of the church having been the source of the problem in the first place. So pray for this Bishop and all the bishops like him who are tackling this because if he's aware of this, he's not the only one. He's aware that there's a problem. He is not the only one. So pray for them for God to illuminate their consciences for them to see clearly. Then have the courage to do whatever it is God wills of them to do. We can all opine on what God wills on this. But pray that they open themselves up to whatever guidance the Holy Spirit gives them on
this. And please pray for the church. I'm Anthony Stein.
