Inside Carolina analyst Rob Harrington and former Tar Heel Dewey Burke join Tommy Ashley to break down North Carolina's 76-61 loss at Duke on Saturday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Cameron Boozer was too much for the Carolina defense and Duke's ability to extend offensive possessions with offensive rebounds eventually wore down Hubert Davis's team in the second half. Burke and Harrington discuss the Blue Devil defense - Duke turned 14 UNC turnovers into 24 points.
Derek Dixon's 17 points led the Heels while Henri Veesaar (11pts), Seth Trimble (10pts) and Jarin Stevenson (10pts) joined the freshman in double figures. Boozer's 26 points and 15 rebounds led the number one ranked Devils.
Up next for Carolina is the ACC Tournament. The Heels have a double bye and will open play Thursday at approximately 9:30pm in Charlotte.

Reggie, I just sold my car online.
Let's go, Grandpa.
Wait, you did?
Yep, on Carvana.
Just put in the license plate, answer a few questions,
got an offer in minutes.
Easier than setting up that new digital picture frame.
You don't say.
Yeah, they're even picking it up tomorrow.
Talk about fast.
Wow.
Way to go.
So, about that picture frame.
Oh, forget about it.
Until Carvana makes one, I'm not interested.
Car selling made easy.
On.
Carvana.
Pick up these nantly.
Yeah,
Oh,
Yeah,
yeah,
yeah,
yeah,
yeah.
Welcome into an insight call on a post game.
I'm Tommy Ashley.
That's Rob Harrington in middle.
Do we Burke on your screen as well Carolina falls about 15 at Duke if you're a betting person a lot of people
Probably made some money if you took Carolina to cover that line sort of a backdoor cover
But Rob overall thoughts here
Not an unexpected result really not an unexpected way it played out actually
Not not unexpected
It was hard not to come away with a little bit of what if you know, obviously what if Caleb Wilson were playing what if
The team had taken a better shot down one point. Yeah, I don't think that one shot like that makes you lose a game
Especially with the onslaught that happened afterward, but I thought I was happy with how they competed in the first half
I thought they showed a lot of
boys and
Competitiveness and then everything went off the rails in the second half
You know, I guess if you were looking for silver linings
I thought offensively they did some good things and their their numbers weren't bad
You two's and three is the shooting percentage is we're okay
And obviously the it's tough to win though when you get beaten up on the bat boards like that and
When you suffer such a turnover disparity
When you look at it do it well you're overall tight first and it would dig deeper into it
Well, what would you think watching that one?
Yeah, I grew up said we fought for 25 minutes and
You know, I have the ball down one Luca takes a really low percentage shot and then boom, you know
They they hit us with a couple grenades and we couldn't we couldn't stop the bleeding at that point
You know our crops that statistically you look offensively we shot a better percentage or shot a better percentage from three
We made all our free throws didn't get to the line enough
But where they killed us is points off turnovers
I mean for us to have 14 turnovers to lead to 24 points for them was brutal
I mean it I don't mean to pick on them
But it felt like Luca was you know effectively responsible for three or four pick sixes
And it's just devastated our ability to stay in that game
It was gonna be hard to win boozer's a load and he's really good and talented and poised and patient and just just darn solid
but
Yeah, you look at the stats and
You might have thought what it would have been a little bit closer, but we got also called what it is the talent gap is so significant
And without Caleb and that was always gonna be tough to win over there
Indeed, yeah, and you were knocking off some of the stats for folks watching that haven't
Really looked at the stats. I'll give you some to their point 45 42 shooting Carolina favor
35 dook shot 38 from three in Carolina
No, excuse me Carolina shot 38 from three and do 31% of them all over the place
But to your point Rob, let's talk about this a little bit
The pick six is Carolina's I thought they were worse on second chance points
But it was 14 to four it seemed like 30 to 10 on second chance points
But those points of turnovers just absolutely eight Carolina it seemed like almost every turnover Carolina had led to some sort of run out
That's right, and I the first thing I said when Caleb Wilson in news came out
Yesterday that he would be out for the year. I thought okay. I have to recalibrate obviously
But you my expectations for the team, but what I do expect in this due game
ACC tournament and NCAA tournament is for the guards to step up
Because they should be able to hold their own independently and not do another NC State performance where they get steamrolled
So it was real disappointing to see a lot of the
Carolest turnovers poor decision-making. I mean it's March
You just can't do that stuff anymore against a good team where you pay the price because you just read the stats and Carolina out shot them
You know they got Duke on a night where Duke was kind of cold from three
Despite a lot of wide open looks
I like the defensive game plan actually. I mean under the circumstances. I thought it made sense
So Carolina got some of what they needed
And they were getting some good shots
But but that's when they weren't turning it over in those turnovers as you guys have said
You live all turnovers
Going the other way for easy buckets and you just can't do that
Do he give me a positive give me some positives from tonight and we'll
We'll talk about the rest of it
But I always try to do a good bad ugly like we've done in the past that we've sort of gotten away from it
But I felt like that was a positive something Dixon shot the ball fairly well
Yeah, would you see that that gave you encouragement here as now his tournament time
Yeah, I would have thought
For those 25 minutes Duke was you know well nervous especially Duke fans
With how we were playing just quickly before I continue that thought what I think Tommy the point you made about
If feeling like their second chance points were going to be vastly superior to ours
Those only 14 to 4 what you felt is that they had 18 offensive rebounds and we had five
So it felt like every time we got a got them to miss a shot that they rebounded even though it didn't lead as many second chance points
That is exceedingly demoralizing from a defensive standpoint to guard and and scrap and fight when you're your undersized and battling
Booser and and guarding them and they run really good stuff and then to get us get a stopper
Get a shot missed and then give up 18 offensive rebounds. I think that's what you felt and I agree. So
um
You know pause. Yeah, you know Dixon shot it really well. He's not afraid of the moment hasn't been and
As we talked about here. He's played like a freshman. He's had some great games. He's had some really poor games
But Evans is effectively in the tank. So
You give credit to Dixon for stepping up and not being afraid in the moment
um
Like I thought Stevenson played hard
I thought he battled and scrapped and Booser's a hell of a lot bigger and stronger than him
And I thought he he tried as hard as he could
So those two guys for me
I thought Seth played hard always does
Didn't shoot a grave from the perimeter
I don't mean to go back to the negative, but I thought Vsar wasn't great
I was frustrated that he didn't rise to the occasion a little bit more
We could have given him the ball and obviously he had to be the focus of the scouting report
But I would have liked to have seen a little more toughness out of him
Um, I don't know if he is going to the league or what his plan is but
Perhaps if that's his only game in a Carolina uniform and Cameron. I would like to see a little more from him
Yeah, I think he might I think he's still struggling a little bit
But to your point and they said a stat and I had to be honest. I didn't look up with look it up
But Vsar with Wilson out only was averaging two a little over two rebounds of game
Rob did I hear that correctly he had nine tonight? I believe and
And a lot of them were in garbage time later, but
To do his point
When you play in the team
This much more talented overall your stars have to star it's tough to have a bunch of row guys
And that's not a not a not but
The way Vsar has played some this year
He's got to be the star or the superstar in a game like this. It's got to get help but and he you know
11 points nine rebounds
And got pushed around quite frankly like everybody did a little bit
Yeah, I mean, I grew a duet on that you know, I was looking for him. I'm still looking for him to be
Option one a one b
And and hopefully now that they they know Wilson isn't going to come back. They will just
Sort of tailor the offense to him and have to leave some of what they were doing before that was working
But yeah, he has he's not a physical player and we talked about this in October
At times this year he has looked for like one. He's developed more of a postgame due because she's kind of a rough matchup for him
Because they have some brawny tough guys down there
So it'll be interesting to see I think matchups and the tournament are going to be important for him and the team
You know, we'll get into more of that later, but you sort of saw when
When Vsar gets taken out of the game, it just puts too much pressure on everyone else
Indeed, do we when you look at the game and then and we're let me reset it a little bit postgame Carolina loses to do not a surprise
Some good some bad some really bad
But shut out to Johnny t-shirt Johnny t-shirt.com for for sponsoring these shows and also almost the 700 people in the live chat
On a Saturday night. Appreciate you guys joining us. Do we what else? What else can we point to here in this game?
You mentioned Bogavats and
Look when he was hot the other night
It was a sight to see but
He he's either extremely hot or extremely cold
There's very little in the middle and you mentioned the turnovers four of them on there and most were picked sixes
I mean, we're what 30 games in or whatever it is and now it's losing go home
Tom in the ACC tournament against
assuming Lee Clemson
But how can he
Sort of find what he had last game and not what he had in this game and why do you think the inconsistencies there?
Yeah
30 games into your point you should be used to the physicality you should be ready for the moment
We play big-grow games, but for me it he has
Has still yet to adapt or or tighten up his his handling in the basketball?
I feel like he's on the verge of a turnover almost every time he dribbles it as a catching shoot guy and when we run him off stuff
I really love those looks
But when he he tries to create
I get very nervous. That's just the feeling I get because the ball is loose. It's just not tight enough and
I don't know if but you know, we still point to the difference in style of play from where he came to
How it is here, but the physicality
And getting bumped off the ball and he left his feet several times with no plan and just turned it over
Stuff that a experienced player just can't do. So that look I was frustrating, you know
It's funny. He made his he made a couple early and you know on on my thread with some of my friends. We were saying
Just core mac it Luca like just shoot 14 threes and make six or eight of them and maybe we got a shot here
But it was too much of off the balance and I'm jumping and throwing it. I just
You know, you're your superpowers being a shooter be that and I think over over emphasis on trying to create lead to those pick sixes
Which was brutal. So
Hopefully bounces back. I like we said he was obviously great the other night
And then I just want to go back to one stat again
They shot 29 for 69 so they missed 40 shots and they offensive rebound at 18 of them
That's an astounding stat. I would have to go back and study
But like when you when do half of their misses get offensive rebounded
That's that's bananas to me. So that that killed us even though the second chance points weren't it
That's just
That is a lot to take mentally on the defensive end
Yeah, you you went back to it and I was gonna go there because while you were talking I was looking through
40 miss shots. That is an astounding number Rob
Um, what else in this game that we're missing. I mean it was pretty obvious that nobody had much for boozer
I'm not sure how you defend the guy. You know, if you're seven feet tall
um
He's gonna bully you and go around you if you try to get out on him
He can drive. I mean, he absolutely eights eight and high up. That's no
Disrespected save but good gracious that that was not a fair fight and then he'll step out and shoot a three
I mean just a great college basketball player that Carolina
You know, and you people say they have to be tough you have to be physical with him
I don't know if it matters at times
Um, but your thoughts on that then what else in this game stands out for you
Yeah, I don't I mean Carolina doesn't have a match up for him. I certainly without Wilson
I think that
the 230 pound seven footer with an
eight five reach would be
The best match up for boozer because then you then you would turn him exclusively into a perimeter player
What what you can't do is allow him to operate inside and wheel and deal like that
He's he's too skilled a scorer too skilled a passer
And he'll eat you up inside and out
Impressive passor impressive passor like he's
He's good
Which is why I don't understand the doubling early in the game because it was just anyway go ahead Rob
I thought that was okay
Because they were trying to protect the front court from fouls and they they probably thought
After the second half foul tally and chapel hill the officials might be trying to subconsciously or consciously even that up
And so they wanted to say okay, you've gotten these more minor guys
Let's see if they can beat us and so it was it wasn't a great strategy, but I don't think they had a great strategy
I just don't think they have the person. No, I mean thing to keep in mind
Duke was without two guys and you wouldn't have known
You know that they have such such an army of talent
You know even guys who don't play that much for them can come in and they're
They can easily compete with the Carolina guys
I think what stood out to me in this game me other than the things that we've discussed
Is how much the back court especially needs an upgrade in the wing
You know that the heels going into the out in the portal season here very soon
Have have got to make it happen with that type of talent because it you can't get a cable Wilson every year
And even if you do have one will they have a booster?
You know there's a pretty big gap between the two teams right now and that you know these next few weeks is their job to close it
Reggie, I just sold my car online. Let's go grandpa wait you did yep on Carvana
Just put in the license plate answered a few questions. Got an offer in minutes
Easier than setting up that new digital picture frame. You don't say yeah
They're even picking it up tomorrow talk about fast wow way to go
So about that picture frame. I forgot about it until Carvana makes one. I'm not interested
Car selling made easy on
Pick up these maplight
Yeah, it's a year after year is and it's a new bunch. It's not like
You're getting the guys and they develop and you've got them for two and three and four years
Even though Malik Brown stayed in college has stayed, you know, he took Syracuse and to it dude
He had 40 cells today by the way. I mean
Malik Brown had 40 files that they didn't call. I'm not if I'm not you know, I'm not a ref guy what I but like
Go back and watch like he had 40 files
You will appease the people in the chat talking about officiate and I agree. Yeah, I mean
It was it was a beat the heck out of each other game with uh
With a lot of interesting stuff there, but
To the point. I mean, and then Dame saw good gracious. I mean he uh
He just frustrated Carolina all night as well. Anyway, do we final thoughts on Duke Carolina because I'm gonna ask y'all both about
What are the expectations from here after your final thoughts on this one, Dewey?
I hate saying this, but you just used the word expectations
My expectation was we were gonna lose by doubt figures. I just
Didn't think that we had enough firepower and the unfortunate part is what wraps it earlier is we actually caught them on a really
mediocre shooting night
percentage-wise and offensively they weren't that good
And I just would have loved to have seen us take the lead just what would have happened if we had gotten
To the line or a quality shot on that one possession when we were down by one
We came out at halftime really strong made a couple shots and I just think the psyche of the game could have really changed
If they look up and they're down
They like they know kale wasn't and worth losing at home in the second half to these guys
I just think that would have been their thought process and that possession. I hate to focus on one
I just thought that was such a key because I believe they came down after that and made a three and then it was just floodgates. So
but
Didn't have my expectations
All right, let's talk about expectations talking with Rob Harrington
Dewey Burke and then side Carolina post game show again shout out to Johnny t-shirt
Do me a favor to like this video go to the qr code and sign up for insect kennel on a premium if you have not
Rob mentioned portal season
Well, when it kicks off you're going to want to be an insect kennel on a premium subscriber for sure
Expectations in the ACC tournament. I'll start with you Dewey
And I'll flip it back and forth in the ACC tournament alone
What are your expectations for this carolina team? Obviously a Duke semi-final match up looms
Should they get past whoever they play in the first round?
Yeah, I mean the
Neutral site makes it a little bit easier in terms of an environment than it was today and
assume you get past the first game
Yeah, you look maybe you get hot and and keep it close and have a chance to steal one from the
At the end like we did at our place
um
That that would be my expectation is
So what we would we have we think Clemson or Louisville is that how it's shaking out
It clipsens the five in their right Rob clipsens the five and then they play
I don't even know
Who is it Davis? He didn't know either
Yeah, anyway
Yeah, so they should win and and get another match up and
It's always it's always nice to have another opportunity to play them, but the talent gap is is significant without Caleb
so
Again, we'd have to shoot it great
We'd have to clean up the the defensive glass on our side and hope to catch him on a poor shooting night again
And then just keep it close at the end because I think
If it was close at the end and the ACC tournament we would be able to play a little bit more free
Than them because their expectation would be that we shouldn't be in the game
So that's that would be what I would hope for
Rob you about you to same there it would be interesting to see them play on a neutral court
But they did that they've done that before um and the talent ultimately wins out
But your thoughts here on what Carolina
And what quite frankly what he but Davis needs to get his team to do in this ACC tournament in Charlotte
Well, I'm concerned in a way
Because now that Wilson is out the NCAA the selection committee could say well
You're not the same team that you were even though even if we think they were tracking as a five seed or maybe a six seed at worst
I could see them saying
If you lose three games in a row, you know Duke or two in a row of Duke and and on the Clemson game
Then you could fall to a seven or eight, you know
I could see them doing that
So I think that first game is actually more important than it might appear
Even though I know some portion of the fan base
Doesn't want to see Duke again in this condition
I don't want to have losing five out of six to these guys, you know
Nobody wants to streak like that
At the same time I do think from a seeding perspective
I think even this version of Carolina could beat a three seed
I think if they slip
Lower than that beating a one or two is going to be real challenging possible
But I but I think the threes are are somewhat worse than the two's just but it's just casually watching teams
And so I'd love for them to stick as a six seed
So I'm looking for them to win that first game and then you take your shot at
presumably Duke
And see what happens
I don't expect them to beat them now
But I would like to see certainly as do he said to clean up some of the
The turnovers and the rebound he at least do better there
Even if Duke has a better shooting night in that game
Play a little bit more sound and take some momentum and confidence in the big tournament
Do he since I don't know when I'll talk to you again
I guess maybe in one of these tournament games
But let me ask you your overall thoughts on the season
So far the regular season given all the injuries
I mean you've been a part of teams injuries happen
I don't care. I was had a lot of them this year
We've we've heard about it even though tonight. It was interesting. I heard more about
um
Caleb Foster and Dongba being out
Then I did about Wilson being out which I thought was interesting. Maybe that's just my biased ears
But your thought on the regular season and how it's gone and
Has it met the expectations? Maybe you had going into it
As we sit here on March the seventh
It's a great question, Matt. I don't know that what's our record? What are we
What do we what do we have finished it up? Are we 24 and 7? Does that sound right?
Um, yeah
I don't know that before any games being played and having not seen Caleb Wilson take the floor that I had been all that upset with 24 and 7
Uh, I would say my biggest
Reaction to the season is we got to watch one of the most if not the most gifted freshman
to ever put the uniform on
Uh, I was so sad yesterday
When I heard about him being out or was that the day before or whatever that was
um
I really was looking forward to seeing him play one more time um
And it's so unfortunate that
I you know, I was thinking about Harrison who surprised us and I came back for a second year
Um, you think obviously guys like Tyler stayed for four years
And it's just such a shame that that era is completely over like the door is slammed shut
We never get to see him play in a jersey again for us
Which I just think it sucks um
But I think he was
As exciting a player as I has ever worn the jersey since I've been around
Uh, so that's that's the biggest takeaway. I'm not trying to say comments like the seasons over
We got plenty to play for but before he ever played
Yeah, I don't think he I don't think anybody thought he was going to be this good
And so before he played a minute if we said 24 and 7 and split with Duke
I think you probably would have taken it and and seen what would happen in the tournament. That's my honest opinion
Yeah, I don't necessarily disagree with you at all
I think he far exceeded what I expected and
the 24 and 7
12 and 6 in the conference
Forced in the ACC that needs to be higher
We'll see what it is in the NCAA tournament
Rob final thoughts here
You can take it wherever you want to go
Final thoughts final regular season post game podcasts right here
Well, I just I'll give my thoughts on this too
It's back in the fall
We were sort of laying out what we thought would be acceptable for this team
Of course, you can never account for injuries
I think the the fact that they have secured a single digit loss season
Which is harder to do now because there are so many games
Is a nice accomplishment the the wins and losses and the non-conference
were great
I know the metrics didn't agree with that
But they had a real strong non-conference. I was hoping I said
I thought to win the league and I was hoping they would contend for it. They needed to go
15 and 3 that was wrong because someone went 17 and 1
And I didn't I wasn't expecting to do to be as good as they have then
I thought 15 and 3 might be good enough. I would have said 12 and 6 was a disappointment
I do think the first five games of ACC play were a real setback
But but ever since then you since they got that win at UVA
Which they parlayed into the Duke win at home, you know on balance
I think
And they were tracking as a 4-5 seed in the big tournament
You know after the Duke game before Wilson's first injury
Then I think they're they were on target with extra credit for
beating really good teams
And also for way he held the guys together
During the absence
I don't know if Wilson but they saw her for some of that time
He's been hobbling some too
Into into handle business at home to finish undefeated at home
You know all those are nice feathers in his cap. I know tonight is a downer
And and Wilson being out is demoralizing to the fan base
But but on balance. I thought it was a pretty good
Regular season
With some things to play for we'll see how to define this team in the end. It's legacy
I don't think it was such an emphatic success that
Hubert probably bought himself a big cushion
You know could he withstand a downer next year because of this season? I don't think so
But I think that he will be
Invited back next year. I would I would yes
And I think I think he earned that you know, it wasn't it wasn't resounding
But I think the team did what it needed to do to show big improvement
And then next year I think the expectations will be even higher
So I have my eye Tommy. This is this is my final comment
As we are watching these next two weeks
Think about just in the back of your mind. Who do you want back
Because it's a little trickier question that it may sound because they have a lot of guards and wings kind of grouped together
And not all those guys are going to come back and they couldn't afford for them all to come back
So they've got some real tough decisions to make and so you have to think about
You know, not just talent level, but fit along these guys of you know
Dicks then for example being a freshman. I assume they have to get him back
But otherwise some real tough decisions and so I'm I'm watching and soling myself
I'm going to be watching with an eye toward the portal season which is immediately after the season and it's it's a seamless flow
So I'm I'm eager to see what this team can do and also
Try to think with a coaching staff because they don't have a lot of time this year or this portal season to make some very important calls
It is a
It's gonna be an interesting time. I think I think the seasons
Right down the middle um, so far, but tournament season as we've seen tournament time can certainly
Um change in narrative in a hurry. Do you got anything left or I'm getting this out of here my friend
That's what I got. Let's see if we can make it run somehow and um, and then we gotta we gotta get some dogs in the portal
Absolutely, that is Dewey Burke that is Rob Harrington. I'm Tommy actually it's Johnny t-shirt as always and Johnny t-shirt.com curl on a false to Duke
