Blue Jays Acquire Reliever Louis Varland

The Toronto Blue Jays just acquired 28-year-old right-handed reliever Louis Varland from the Minnesota

twins in a tray that sent prospects.

Alan Rodin and Kendri Rojas, the other way.

Varland, a 15th round pick in 2019, has one option year left and could stick around as

a Blue Jay through free agency after the 20-30 season.

Earlier with the twins, Varland debuted in the majors back in 2022 with five starts and

a 3.81 ERA.

He followed up in 2023 with 17 games, including 10 starts, at 4.63, but struggled in 2024

over.

16 appearances with a 7.61 mark.

Last season, he locked down a full-time bullpen row, appearing in 74 games with a solid

2.97 ERA and 22 holds.

He saw heavy playoff action too, pitching in 15 of 18 games with a 3.94 ERA over 16

innings, striking out 17, while managers trusted him in big spots.

Varland relies on a 98-mile per hour force seemer, thrown nearly half the time, mixed

with a knuckle curve and slider.

He ranks a lead in fastball speed, chase rate, strikeouts, ground balls and extension, though

he gives up some hard contact.

Fans have him in 67 games for 67 innings with a 3.38 ERA, making him a key arm for the

Jay's bullpen moving.
