The Toronto Blue Jays just signed veteran pitcher, Max Scherzer, to a 1-year $3 million

contract that includes up to $10 million in performance bonuses.

To clear a spot on their 40-man roster, they designated infielder Ben Calls for assignment,

and the Chicago Cubs claimed him off-wavours right, away.

During off-a-season where they fell, one win short of a World Series title, the Jays

are deep into spring training evaluations.

They lost long-time short-stop Boba Shet to the New York Mets in Free Agency, and brought

in Japanese slugger, Kazuma Okamoto, to help fill that gap.

Calls spent less than two weeks in the Jays camp as a potential utility option.

The 26-year-old has bounced around farm systems with the Yankees, Cubs, White Socks, and

now Blue Jays showing solid defense and speed across.

The infield was struggling at the plate in AAA last year, with a 235 batting average and

underwhelming power numbers.
